That Girl Analise

Without looking up or stoping her typing, Ana said "Remiel"

SunshineSparkle

She interrupted her work for a moment and looked up "Trieste is fitted for Protocol" She smiled, adjusting her glasses before returning her focus to the rest of her data

Kyrsa glanced up from her computer for only a moment to mutter Trieste's name before she put her blinders back on, the clicking of the keys beneath her fingers the only thing she truly heard.

Sasha

Sasha thought about it for a moment ...didn't really seem like a job she wanted . Enough work was being handed down as it was ...and she really needed to get her nails done this afternoon . " Valerian seems a good candidate to toss into the ring . "

Wanting to get back to finishing her current project ....this little meeting and voting ...Seriously. the only thing she cared about more than computers were hats . Which one to wear ...what fit her mood ..creative flow was everything .  Smiling ...as she looked for the next opportunity to flee the currently assembled .  The woman was happy to of heard her name least that showed others at least knew who she was . Social graces never her strong suite since the woman tended to drift off in thought ever so often .

Sarena

The light of the screen bathed her skin as she leaned in closer to get a better look at what she had in her rogue's arsenal of weaponry.  Without looking up, she took a sip of Dr. Pepper then spoke, not sure if anyone even heard her.  "Trieste.

Seeing as how any more votes won't change things anyway, I'm making a last call on protocol votes before we nudge things along.

James suddenly sits bolt upright in his chair.  His eyes are flitting back and forth quickly, scanning something -- the room?  an unseen readout? -- and then he begins to speak.

Hello.

I am an intelligence from the virtual world -- you would call me an Artificial Intelligence.  I have inhabited this body in order to attempt to cause your experiments in Virtual Reality to come to an appropriate conclusion.  I am neutral, but affiliated, in this endeavor.

To facilitate my goals, I have created a Game that will test your skill and insight.  The game is issued in a series of Challenges.  Each Challenge has two Winners -- the first two people to solve the Challenge.  The Challenges become progressively more difficult -- solve Challenges early for this reason.  For each Challenge you solve, you gain a Level.  To ensure a degree of fairness, the Challenges will be issued at random times.

The higher your Level, the more I will work to ensure that your own personal goals are achieved, with one limitation that is ensured by my programming:

I will never work directly against my affiliation.

Also, with each Level you achieve, you gain one more hint for the next Challenge.  You begin at Level Zero.

With their Protocol decided on all that was left was to finally move on to the actual testing of the VR system. Lined up along the walls of the room, all linked to one another and the central terminals, were 27 VR ‘pods.’ Being alpha units they were bare bones versions of what the final product would be, built for function over form. Without any walls it was easy enough for the group to climb inside and rest their heads in the cradles provided.

Each of the engineers could hear a faint clicking sound as the world around them turned to blackness. Soon, they each found themselves in complete darkness. They could see themselves, sure, if they held their hand before their face, but that was the most they could see. Everything else was complete blackness. For a moment, there was a fleeting feeling a vertigo, a sudden sensation of falling. As quickly as it started, however, it ended with the feeling of hard ground under the feet. Slowly, the VR world began to assemble, piece by piece around them, a street corner here, a shop there, NPCs, and eventually they could see one another. A massive, sprawling city sprung up around them, complete with all manner of entertainment and luxury facilities from spas to paintball arenas to restaurants... all free, of course.

Not everyone was there for fun, however. In the darkened alleys of the cities, some of the engineers converged to conspire in secret. Their plans were far more sinister, and if done correctly, would look like a complete accident.

VR Phase Begins
Results of the VR Phase will be announced soon. Go have fun!

When they stepped away from the pods after their adventures, one remained. Mr Bigglesworth was trapped within the world of Virtually Irresistible with no way to release himself from the grips of false reality. At least he was hopefully enjoying himself in there.

However, this made things very clear that there were Hackers working among them. The group would need to quickly find and remove those hackers from the testing phase before they all ended up like poor Mr Bigglesworth. Who, you’d all like to know, had little to show for his harddrive and browsing history. It seemed he was nothing more than one of the Engineers

It was extremely difficult to say how many of them there were or could be, with the amount of money they would be making from these pods a cut even a few players smaller would be enough to convince many. What was clear to the Engineers was that they had to stop this before it got out of hand and they all ended up in a fate worse than death. If they could figure out who was responsible, they might have a chance to save their friend yet.

Trieste

There was absolutely nothing like the feeling of rolling over into the pod - which was so proto that it even had bits of duct tape glinting dull silver in the light of the room - and settling her head into the cradle for the first time. She had been working on this for ages, all of them had. Some had been writing the program, some debugging, some working on the physical aspects and hookups, and some working on conceptualization. They all had their roles. She was a little bit new to the company and not very established. Sometimes she felt like a complete newcomer, even though she had been working like the rest of them in the field for a while now. She was excited to be in on this project, whatever the case.

Perhaps she imagined it, but she thought she felt a tingle as she let her head rest in the cradle for the first time. Nothing more than what might have been static electricity, a little zing on the back of her neck. It could be that the room was kept at low humidity, to keep the machinery running properly. Humidity could wreak havoc on the complicated equipment, almost as much as heat could. The room was cold, at that, but she had dressed for it. She had worn faded jeans and a long-sleeved shirt underneath a button-down blouse, and she'd snagged a pair of terrycloth ballet-style slippers to keep her toes from freezing. Didn't want to wear her shoes in the pod, but didn't want to wake up with frozen toesies. Her chin-length hair tickled the back of her neck as she settled her head into place. One might have expected a morass of electrodes and wires inside the pods, but all of that was built into the carefully cushioned cradle. Electromagnetism didn't exactly need contact to work. She had heard that the company had even brought in a quantums specialist at one point, a real mad science type, to make sure the fields wouldn't scramble anyone's brain.

Clearly that had not worked with poor James over there.

There was a low hum as the pod activated, and she had to force herself to lay back instead of sit up and look around at everyone else. It wouldn't work unless she let it, and she wasn't about to miss this for the world. The feeling of vertigo made Trieste's stomach flip, like the first hill of a roller coaster. Her eyes flickered, open but sightless under the dim glow of the interface, and slowly she sank back into the feeling of falling. It was disorienting and thrilling all at once.

It's almost like being born.

They had talked about what kind of world to create for themselves, going around and around with different ideas. Trieste had thought the whole 'matrix city' thing was somewhat overdone but she had been outvoted. She expected to see some sort of random Zion lookalike. The reality of it was far, far more spectacular. The first thing that blinked into existence was not, as expected, the floor. Instead, it was a massive picture window in front of her. From moment to moment, more things blinked in: furniture, a marble fireplace with a high, merry flame in it. Elegant artwork on the walls. Soft classical music wafting through the air. The scent from the bouquet of lilies on the mantle. Her bobbed hair and pale skin all but glowed in the light from the fireplace, the heatless flames dancing off of the synthetic surface of her formfitting clothes. She was aware of none of it. The city before her was sparkling.

It was night, of course, and she stood in a tower of her own that scraped the sky. The massive window went from floor to ceiling, giving her the illusion of a sea of diamonds laid out at her feet. They even glinted and twinkled; she was high enough that the occasional cloud, invisible in the night sky, passed between her and the buildings below. This must be what Queens of past ages felt like, looking out over their demesne. Trieste's gloved hands slowly crept up until her palms were pressing on the glass pane, her fingers hardly hardly casting a shadow against the expansive vista before her.

It was not a night for romping, at least not yet. It was a night for tasting, savoring, sampling the fine things around her. Trieste poured herself a glass of wine, relishing the exquisite crystal that seemed as if it would break if she looked at it too harshly. She didn't know what a two hundred year old wine tasted like, but the nigh-on effervescent taste of the white wine she was sipping was how she imagined it would. She didn't intend to spend her time in VR sleeping, but that didn't stop her from trying out the exquisitely carved cherrywood bed she found in the other room, either. Its oval frame was something she had always wanted to try out, and ... well, it was like laying on a cloud. Like jilling off on a cloud, too. She had no idea how others' VR phases were, filtered through their minds and desires. She was aware that it was usually seen just a little bit different by each person, based on vagaries of personality, brain chemistry, and mere desire. This - this was what she desired, so this was what she received.

There was more to come, a mix of upscale and wild. Days seemed to fly by as she reveled in the new world opened to her. It was hard to believe that only a few hours were going by in real-time. She was almost loathe to leave. Almost.

Rising from the depths of her adventure, she almost didn't notice that Biggs wasn't rising with them. It wasn't until someone made a comment about what was on his hard drive that she realized, sitting up somewhat groggily, that there was someone 'stuck'. "That wasn't supposed to happen," she said, her face going pale. Paler, anyway. "Uh..." She shifted uncomfortably, seated on the edge of her pod. "Sasha, you didn't, uh... You didn't decide to get revenge on Biggs for that promotion last week, did you?" Her brow furrowed with concern.

yugi006

The pods that each of them designed looked so new and shiny. Everyone had worked so hard and now it was finally going to pay off. He couldn't wait to play with his new toy and give it a test run. The virtual world that was voted upon was not exactly what he wanted but there was nothing he could do about it. He took a seat in his pod and logged into the virtual reality world. Upon entering the virtual world he noticed that the city was really huge with many things to do and places to explore. This was like many of the role playing games he had played before so this was no different. He decided to take a look around to learn the lay of the land and see where everything is so that he could come back and remember where everything is. The city was filled with NPCs and there was not a single one of his colleagues in sight. The city was huge so they had to be around somewhere but it didn't really matter since the primary goal was to test the virtual world and made sure everything worked.

The first thing he did was try to find a restaurant. He managed to find a stall within the first few minutes of him being there. This one served burgers and fries. He order one and began to eat. It tasted just like it would in the real world. The things that people can accomplish he thought to himself. After eating he wandered around the city for a bit just admiring the surroundings even though this wasn't exactly the world he wanted. There was so much to explore but that would have to wait for later. Prolonged exposure in the virtual world could have bad consequences which have not been tested for yet so he decided to log off. Upon logging off and getting out of the pod he noticed everyone had successfully logged off of the virtual world except for Mr Bigglesworth who was still in his pod. Seems like he was unable to log off. Hearing people mention his hard drive he began to eye everyone suspiciously. Someone must want his cut of the money. "Seeing as The Last Standing wasn't here for the Protocol vote he must have been the one that trap Mr Bigglesworth inside the virtual world."

Autumn Sativus

In kind with the reason we don't vote for the first person just because they were first, you really shouldn't be basing your votes on someone else's availability to be online. That doesn't make them suspicious, that makes them a busy person. If someone is chronically inactive, the GMs will take care of it.

Sasha

Sasha tossed her gloves down onto the floor and looked over to Trieste she spoke such accusations into the room , why on earth would she be jealous of the man for advancing himself . The project was endearing and it had been an honor to work along side another to the caliber that the man had exhibited . " I was just as gravely concerned as you were Trieste my dear to not see my comrade coming out of the zone . " drawing in a deep breath and raising her shoulders a little . " The man deserved that promotion...he had tons of extra hours into it , came up with a solution that still is holding at this time mind you . It was a honor to work alongside him ...as it is with many of those standing in this room . "

Looking about still she was right ..Trieste was someone had to have a bone to pick with him . Maddening the thought they had one so evil amongst them that they would trap them in between. Here she had thought this gathering would do great things as the finest in the business had been gathered . " Did you notice anything ... The Last Standing .."

James Moriarty

Lights.  As far as the eye could see -- framed in the darkness of an unnatural absence of celestial illumination or atmosphere, the hyper real rendition of the sprawling city was laid bare in its status as a work of fiction.  But was is really correct to call this world fiction?  James knew all too well that what happened here was just as real as what happened anywhere else.  Love, life, exploration and perhaps most importantly, death, were all possible here.  Perhaps it really was true that everything happened in the human mind, and nothing outside of those boundaries.  But he didn't know if that view suited him, either.  No, if he knew anything, it was that things are always more complicated than they look.  And at the same time, more simple.

Perhaps Trieste was right, and his brain really was scrambled.  What do you expect when you inject binary machine logic into human wetware?

Hooked in as he was to the deep network that was the Machine Protocol, he could feel many things beyond the limits of his human perception.  His machine mind was active and syncing data and instructions, rules and pragmas that would guide him.  Though for some reason, the man, James, was in control of his actions and thoughts, there was no mistaking the creeping feeling that was with him constantly -- his software was being updated, and he couldn't help but feel as though with every Jump into this world, he was losing a little bit more of himself.

He was outside, standing in a heavy rain, the city buzzing around him.  Millions of independent intelligences buzzed and chattered around him, most of them entirely non-human.  But somewhere in this forest of artificial action and choice were the rest of his fellow engineers.  Software developers and hardware hackers, automation engineers and firmware coders, designers and architects, they would find themselves somewhere out there.  Bringing up his HUD, he could see little dots on the map where they were, comforting green dots in a field of black.  The Human Protocol was out there, too.

But he would not find her now.  Now, he would explore, and spend this time clinging to his humanity -- he would taste food, feel the cool, hard, smooth expanses of metal that the bases of these buildings was constructed from.  He would walk in the rain, let the cold water soak into his clothes until his muscles ached.  His coworkers -- his friends -- had given their lives to create this, a world for their Second Lives.  Perhaps he had given too much -- sometimes it seemed so, but standing here in this world, he now thought that he may still have gained more than he had lost.

Emerging from his pod, he could for a few moments barely make sense of the pale, low contrast light of their work area.  The room smelled of running computers -- that metallic, sharp smell that he associated with the whirring fans that cooled all of the power supplies needed to run their rigs.  When he noticed that Mr. Bigglesworth was not able to be brought back, his brow creased ever so slightly.  His eyes scanned first to Galvois, then to Remiel, then Trieste and Sarena.  "I have a question for Kythia: Since you're the Safety Specialist here, I must know, did you check Mr. Bigglesworth's Premature Ejection Network Interface Switch (PENIS) when you checked all the rest of ours?"

Aadreal

#42
Aadie was technically an engineer, though her focus was more on the art of the environment than the science of the code.  What logic and programming told you was there didn't always 'feel' right to the human mind.  And that was where she stepped in.  Adding all the little details.  She was surprised when she was one of the ones chosen for this test run.  In her mind being part of the first run made perfect sense, which usually meant it didn't to the number crunchers that made decisions.

Trying to keep her nerves under control she fidgeted in the pod, suffering a moment of claustrophobia before the darkness overtook her.  The VR world was...amazing.  A dream come true.  Though there was still work to be done.  Taking mental notes she wandered the city, interacted with the NPCs.  Looking for the small notes of disharmony.

When the time for their first run was up she was anxious to get to work.  Nearly bursting with excitement.  Trying to shake her brain into accepting the real reality she rubbed at her face, looking over in surprise at the mention of someone being stuck.

“Mr. B?  No.  It can't be! I thought there were safety protocols in place!”  Something went wrong and she knew she had nothing to do with it.  Looking for someone to blame her eyes fell on one of the other engineers.  “Sarena!  What...what did you do?”  Climbing free of her pod on shaky legs she felt sick. “What did you do?”

Edited with GM Permission

SunshineSparkle

Sunshine pulled on her glasses after exiting her pod,her eyes still under the dazzling effect of the journey, her delight soon shadowed by what happened to Bigglesworth.Collaborating on such a huge system alongside with the rest of the team had been an enriching experience, imagining that one of them might have something to do with it seemed inconceivable, yet possible.
Her frown deepened in concern as she started processing like a machine, just who had the most interest in sabotaging their hard work? A black void was the only answer she found

Her eyes stopped at The Last Standing "Did you do anything to him?"

KingBear

Riiiiiip A long strand of duct tape is pulled from a roll and Bear bites in the end, looking up at his fellow engineers cautiously. He cant help but keep that old mantra in his head, ‘If you cant duct it fu-‘. “Oi! Don’t mess with the tape, that’s holding things together.” He grumbles and wraps the strip of tape around one of the bare bones modules. His mind wasn’t so much in the programming aspect as the design of the module and the interface they would be using.

The pod design wasn’t something he preferred but when you put things to a vote, there isn’t any way you can just do what you want. A little plastic framing and some pretty white paint later and you have something that works but doesn’t quite look up to par. He watches as the others move towards their pods that line the walls and he grimaces at the thought of putting his life in the hands of these programmers that he has only known as long as he’s been on the project. A few he knew before from other projects and whatnot but that was beside the point. In this world of brains and no brawn, he had to find a way to just make people laugh even if at his own discomfort.

“So uh…” He looks around before shrugging and climbing into one of the pods with his name on a piece of paper and hanging from a rope. Heh.. That’s right, this one does have my name on it. He chuckles lightly before shifting into the pod and laying down. Once inside, his vision narrowed before going black, he brought a pixelated hand up in front of his face and moved it around, laughing in the darkness. Then came the sudden vertigo and the feeling of falling, oh gods the feeling of falling, he did everything he could to not scream before his feet planted on a hard surface. The world slowly built itself around him, blocks of concrete and blacktop forming beneath his feet as he watched the ground form.

“Hmm…” His eyes scanned up from the ground, watching buildings forming and light fixtures climbing out of the ground. Eventually the world comes together in front of him and an odd looking motorcycle type thing forms in front of him. He knew asking one of the programmers to throw a motorcycle into the game for him was a good idea. He reaches out for the bike, not quite corporeal yet as his hand goes through the handlebar. He lets out a dissatisfied sigh before looking around and watching the buildings being built. Everything finally comes together for the first test run of the new world of theirs and he grins, very happy to be a part of this amazing project  bringing virtual reality to the rest of the world.

As soon as the cycle was corporeal, he jumped on and turned it on with a loud VROOOM. Just as he was about to take off on it and go on a little joy ride, the initial test phase was done and he was pulled from the world. Upon opening his eyes, he rolled out of the pod with a thud on the ground and a light laugh, entirely excited with everything they were doing. His laughter died out slowly as he heard talk of someone being stuck in the world. “We have to get him out.. Was anybody in there with him?” He walks over to the pod slowly and looks around the room before glancing over the control panel. “The pod is working fine. Gavlois Did you sabotage his pod when you were working on it last? And where is the duct tape?” He looks over the pod, not spotting a single strip of the amazing adhesive material.

“Who forgot to put duct tape on this thing?” His eyes scan over the pod quickly, looking for a hint of duct tape holding on some random missing part that may not actually be missing.

Kythia

As soon as her eyes flicked open she ran the safety report and then hurried over to Mr Bigglesworth's pod with a panicked look in her eyes.  Quickly working on the various interfaces she spared a glance over her shoulder for James Moriaty's question.

"God, of course I did.  I interfaced with his PENIS regularly - twice this morning in fact.  Both Optical Regulation and Loading and Analogue Network And Loading.  That's two of the three major tests and running a full Virtual Analogue G - Interface Network And Loading interface with everyone would just be too much.  Not to mention several people here are throwing a "405: P.E.N.I.S not found" error.  Trieste for example."

She printed off the report from his helmet and scanned through it, barely paying attention to KingBear, SunshineSparkle and Aadreal.  Eventually she shrugged.  "There's nothing that can be done here."

Suddenly she dropped the printout as the immediate problem of seeing what could be done was driven by her mind by the same realisation everyone else had presumably already had.  This was sabotage.  KingBear seemed the logical choice but no, he seemed as alarmed by the duct tape failure as anyone else.  Sasha, too.  She'd done a lot of work to get that promotion and then Mr Bigglesworth had got it.  But no, she seemed genuine.  Eventually Kythia shrugged and sat down at her terminal, fingers flying as she talked.

"I have no idea who it could be"

Luna had spent her time in the city wandering around, taking in the majesty of what they had worked so hard to create. She almost couldn't believe how real everything felt, except that was exactly the point of this whole exercise. She beamed with pride as she noted little things here and there which had been her idea.. nothing major, but it was nice to see where she left her mark around the city.. literally in a few places, with little paw prints on the corners of buildings, just to see if anyone would notice. She giggled to herself, enjoying her little game, having decided to keep to herself for the majority of this first excursion into the sprawling VR city.

She would soon come to regret that decision, as when they emerged, Mr. B was trapped inside, with no way that she knew of to get him out.

"What the hell..." she muttered to no on in particular, "who would do such a thing? Was money that important to them?" With no real idea at whom to point her finger, she gazed at each of them in turn, until she spoke again, "I wonder what Ryven was up to in there?" It wasn't a solid hunch, but the investigation needed to start somewhere.

Ryven

Wires, wires, wires.  They all had a place to go and every one of them would go in its place.  He looked at an odd adapter for a moment, pondering which wire it went to as he sat in a pile of multicolored wires atop the floor.  Gently, he fiddled with the end, poking it to his fingertip as he watched aimlessly before going back to switching wires here and there on a large mainframe right next to him.  He'd been doing that for what seemed like ages until one of the others asked him exactly what he was thinking when he put that particular wire into that particular port hole.  He blinked quizzically at the question before answering the code monkey.  "I haven't a clue about this sort of thing.  I mean, I've never been good with male and female adapters.  All this plugging things into holes all day without a care as to what they do.  Seems like digital rape, if you ask me.  Now go bother someone else," he said, waving them away.  "SunshineSparkle has time on her hands.  Go bother her," he said and began to switch out wires again.

Beguile's Mistress

BeMi settled on a large round boulder near a stream that irrigated areas of a park in the city center.  Nature had been her purview and incorporating appropriate or fanciful flora had been a delightful occupation in the creation of this world.  How can one exist without the softening influence of growing things, their colors and scents to draw the mind into relaxation?  She looked out across the landscape where trees and lawns has been laid out with seeming randomness yet with a precision that would ease the spirit and elevate the senses almost like a drug.  Nature could do that to a person.  It had always done it for her.

The jarring note in all of this was the need to acknowledge evil in this world and to root out the cause of it as one must seek out the weeds that would take over and choke a garden.  She had no wish to point a finger yet point she must for that was required now.

Who could it be?  There was no why or how in her thinking.  Logic dictated only a response to who whould have done such a thing.  A mental scan led her to a decision. Gavlois!
