For the most of you who are likely unfamiliar with the game, Arcanum was a blend of steam punk and high fantasy where magic was pitted against technology. Gnomes forcibly breed orcs with humans to create halfbreed bodyguards and dwarves found themselves displaced by human steam technology.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura E3 2000 Trailer try not to have your mind blown by these graphics

I'm interested in telling an original story in this setting - the (mis)adventures of a band of unlikely heroes (felons, failed businessmen, crackpots, beggars, prostitutes, fools, aged heroes fallen from their fallen glory, etc).

The first story will be The Battle for Blackroot. Should there be enough interest, more chapters can follow, but this one will place the group at the heart of struggle for Blackroot's loyalties, presently wavering between Tarrant (large technology driven port city) and Cumbria (crumbling magical kingdom). The groups actions will also have an impact on good/evil and the prevalence of magic/technology.

For those of us who are in the original rounds of posts, we'll be starting in and around the Derholm pits - a wretched and violent underground prison in the Capitol of Cumbria. You can be a prisoner, bystander, or guard bored out of his skull.

I remember playing and enjoying it but I never got very far. I remember it being kinda hard.

lore

Yep well I am a nerd :P I loved the story so much I muscled through the game play. Who am i kidding? I even liked a lot of the game play. I might have also hard a crush on Virgil... but I was young!

Huge familiarity with the game isn't all that important - especially not if you're making a thug or idiot. A well educated individual might be more tricky, but I can write a laymen's intro/have a lot of what needs to be known integrated in to GM posts

Speaking of GMs, if there were any fellow Arcanum nerds out there, or just someone who happens to be interested in co-gming this me, I'd be interested in hearing from you too.

Joslyn

I like the concept for this game, though I'm not familiar with the setting except for what you mentioned and reading the wikipedia article on the computer game just now.

I have an idea for a character, an elven archer who is good with stealth and possibly knows a little magic (though I don't know what sort of spells exist in the setting). She was once a military officer for Qintarra but was exiled after an important civilian official was killed in her patrol territory. Since then she has wandered in human lands, working as a mercenary and selling her body to get by. If this concept sounds good I can make a character sheet and go into more detail. :)

lore

oh ho ho - I like!

This is a great resource for magick and all things arcanum : http://www.gamebanshee.com/arcanum/spellcolleges.php
And some info on races here http://www.terra-arcanum.com/index.php?section=library&content=general&id=races

I definitely recommend taking advantage of the natural magickal abilities that come with elf blood.

I will also be making a application template lickity split

Joslyn

Oh, also forgot to ask if this game is going to be freeform or if there is some system? I prefer freeform, though of course I'm fine with using the computer game to inform what sort of abilities my character would have.

lore

 Freeform.

I'll only step in if someone is performing feats of godly proportions.

I don't expect people to detail their inventories either. The equipment database is more so there for inspiration/information for those unfamiliar with the game.

If you want to have some super cool original artifacts, however, I'd appreciate it if you mentioned it in your app.

Name – Malista Gwethel
Race – Elf
Alignment – Good
Aptitude – Magic
Spells – Conveyance
Skills – Bow, Dodge, Prowling, Spot Trap, Heal
Weapons – Bow and Arrow, Sword, Buckler
Age – 108 (actual), ~16 (appearance)
Alliance – None

Physical Description

Mal is a strikingly beautiful and pale-skinned young woman. Her long, dark hair is usually worn up and she has brown, almond-shaped eyes. She is short and slender though physically fit. Normally she wears practical and unremarkable human clothing, though when selling her body she will either choose something more revealing or try to pass herself off as an innocent elven maiden.

Bio

Malista was born in the elven city of Qintarra to loving parents and a seemingly idyllic life. As the youngest of five there was no shortage of siblings to watch out for her. Mal was an intelligent and well-adjusted girl, and when she came of age she decided to join the military in order to protect her people. She proved to be brave and skillful in battle, and even by elven standards she had remarkable aptitude for the bow. She learned much of small unit, asymmetric tactics and how to use stealth and terrain to her advantage. The young soldier also studied Conveyance magic in order to keep foes at a distance, and was taught how to perform first aid on battlefield wounds.

Over the course of several years Mal rose to the rank of Ranger-Captain, with her own unit to lead and portion of the forest to patrol. One day an arrogant young elf named Vandris Deledren, one of the civilian officials who oversaw the military, demanded an inspection and tour of Mal’s sector. He annoyed her so badly that she sent one of her lieutenant’s squads to escort him instead of doing so personally—this was not unheard of but was technically against the rules for such a high ranking official. This decision would be Mal’s undoing when Vandris and the squad were found killed by unknown invaders. The young soldier was held personally responsible for the deaths and sentenced to exile by a tribunal. Her immediate family and most of the soldiers in her unit wished to stand by her, but the elf did not want to cause any trouble for them and left without any protest.

Since her exile almost two years ago Mal has wandered throughout human lands, struggling with feelings of homesickness and resentment. She has done some mercenary work, but her insistence on only supporting causes she considers ethical means she has also been forced to turn to prostitution to survive.

Ditto, and the graphics weren't bad for when the game came out.  :P

Interested, but following for now.  See if I have room to pick up the game.

Zaer Darkwail

I played some distance in game but not through it but got familiar with mechanics (and how hard it is a life as full blown elf mage; needed always rent special cart in trains so I do not nuke train steam engine with my presence alone).

Anyways voice interest and note for Joslyn; I got mission where I had to escort a 90 old female elf to another city. She was teenager in sugar drunk state and hyper and quite bit childish (as responsible elf I refused let such inmature elf into hands of humans, into city which has even brothel which runs with elves). So I would advice increase the real age to somewhere past 100 but appearance being 16-18 in category visually speaking :).

Anyways thinked play a half-elf who is into tech stuff thanks his human sided parent; kind forsaking his elven roots and lean to magic but has interest in natural sciences (like biology) and like outdoor activity.

Weird, it seems like a lot of roleplaying games copy the idea from dungeons & dragons that elves don't reach maturity until they are like one hundred or something, despite it being the most absurd idea in all of d&d. Anyway, if lore decides to keep that setting detail in I'll change the sheet but I'm hoping not as it kills my suspension of disbelief. >.< lol

Zaer Darkwail

Well, the hundred year could be 'elf standard' but in Dark Elf trilogy it was mentioned drows, who are elves like surface cousins, mature lot quicker in mental department also but only because their brutal raising environment pushes it. So elf could reach full mental maturity in same time as body does if raised by humans I believe (when thinking DnD standards for elf maturity). Up to GM/ST decide do we keep it canon in this game the age.

AndyZ

Ironically, 4e did away with it, and elves reach adolescence at the same age as humans.

I'm interested as well. I managed to play and beat the game several times, enjoying it all along the way; I'm even such a geek that I went mucking around and creating my own backgrounds and the like.  8-)

I'd be interested in playing a technologist, if that's alright.

By the way, is their going to be an overarching storyline, something that unites and brings our characters together on a mission, or is it going to be more like a sandbox environment, where we just sort of wander around and do whatever?

Edit: I need to not let my enthusiasm blind me to what is mentioned in the opening post. Disregard my question, I will have a sheet up later tonight.

Zaer: Don't forget that Half-elves in game had a -1 penalty to their tech rolls. If I remember correctly, it's because they have a latent bit of magic in themselves, and tech doesn't like it.

Character sheet:
Name Johnathan Fitzpatrick

Race - Human
Alignment - Indifferent, leaning towards good
Aptitude - Technologist
Spells - N/A
Skills - Electric (Assistant), Gunsmithy (Engineer), Explosives (assistant), Mechanical (Assistant) Firearms (Expert)
Weapon(s)  Fine Revolver, 1 explosive grenade, 1 flash grenade
Age - 24
Physical Description Five foot nine inches tall, and weighing in at 200 pounds. He has brown hair with blond highlights, and a big, black, bushy beard that is well-maintained.
Alliance - Tarant
Bio Johnathan has always been a staunch lover of technology, ever since he was a wee lad accidentally shocking himself on things he did not fully understand. He is something of a natural when it comes to handling technology, understanding it on a very intuittive level. It is no shock, then, to anyone that knew him as a child, that he would become a technologist one day; it seemed a foregone conclusion.

He has always wanted to move to Tarant where he could find greater acceptance for his skills and intellect, and be amongst others like him; however, when the chance presents itself to turn his home into a haven of technological awesomeness, how could he possibly pass up the opportunity to further spread techunology, and all the wonderful things it can accomplish?

Items: Weapons mentioned above, sixty bullets, shoes, suede jacket, charged ring (2x)

Very Nice. I'm a huge fan of the name too.

But what makes John unexceptional, or a bit of a misfit, or failure?

Does his zealousness for technology as he stutters to explain the wonders of his imagination give the impression of madness to magic-minded people? Did his gnome business partner steal the rights to his patents out from under him and make away with his fortunes? Did a rival inventor frame him for a power outrage that took out all of Tarant for a week?

This is awsome, i loved this game since i saw orcs flying bi-planes.  I would love to join if there is room.  I like the idea of an older war hero, who is now possibly a drunk.

Bio Sketch Born and bred in the Bolye. Abby wanted to be good, she truly did. Unfortunately a life of dashing heroism is hard to come by in Tarrant's crime-controlled slums. Of muddied blood and no means, the girl spent her youth as a messenger for underworld crime lords, eventually graduating to more dangerous and challenging tasks. Five years ago she went on the run, unable to kill a mark assigned her. There's been a generous bounty on her head ever since. With few legitimate skills and no friends or family to speak of, she became a drifter taking from those who could afford it and moving from town to town.

She will be getting arrested in my starting post.

And that's one of my favorite parts too!

Name Keldrik Ironfist

Race Dwarf
Alignment  Indifferent. Leans towards Evil (slightly selfish and a little maniac)
Aptitude Highly Technologic
Spells None at all
Skills Repair, Melee, Firearms
Weapon(s) Pyrotechnic Axe, Flamethrower, 3 Molotov Cocktails
Age - 52 years old. A young dwarf.
Physical Description Short - but tall for a dwarf. His beard is well oiled when he needs to meet someone, but otherwise that is possibly a very bad idea nearby Ironfist.
Alliance The Wheel Clan
Bio  Perk - Arsonist!

Keldrik Ironfist is the firstborn son of a rather respected family from the fabled Wheel Clan. However, ever since his youth the dwarf struggled to keep up with the interests of his siblings. He wanted and loved the forge, but not out of the things he could craft of it with toil and sweat... but of the heat. The warmth of the fire.

They laughed at him. Once he had finally perfected the Balanced Axe, as many before him that trailed the path of the smithy, a little blueprint caught his eyes. Long days locked alone brought him forth a mixed-up artefact - his desire to set things and foes on fire coupled with the art that dwarf smiths had perfected along the generations. It was called travesty and wickedness. Taking upon his glasses and belongings, Keldrik fled the Wheel Clan many years ago, fleeing to prevent his family from the same shame that Loghaire Thunder-Stone had brought to the royal family, many years ago...

Mourning.

I fixed the character sheet to reflect the age change, I'll just hope it never actually comes up in game. I don't think I could actually explain in-character why she accomplished nothing for all those decades.  :P "And then from age seventy to age eighty I, uh, wrote poems about trees. Here is online manual of Arcanum. It includes list of spells and techs and details about setting. Not all lore mind you but some of it.

Anyways interesting fact; tech fails against those strongly attuned to magic and magic fails against those strongly in tech side of things. So a dabbler mage attack spell is resisted by tech professor easily.

Anyways considering we lack a proper mage....I could be a half-elf mage then who tries approach practice of magic in more urban fashion than traditional sense. Like making magical print processing to rival the engineered version and such. Adapt magic to situations where tech has already been developed. I need ponder the failure or misfit part.

Name Alaric Athelas
Race Elf
Alignment - Good
Aptitude - Magic
Spells - White Necromantic
Skills – Heal and Persuasion
Weapon(s) Used - None
Age – Exact age unknown – looks relatively young for an elf, perhaps around 120.
Physical Description – Alaric carries himself as most of his kin do – with an air of grace and beauty.  Tall and lithe, his body is often draped in robes if he can manage it, not the biggest fan of the human's less than flowing style.  His hair is often left down, long cascades of silvery white, his emerald eyes startling enchanting that have left more than a few men and women lost in his gaze.  A gentle smile often graces his full and pouting lips, seeking to aid those that might be in need of it, or at the very least die trying.
Alliance - None

Bio Not much is known of Alaric's past, nor does he wish to explore it. Raised amongst a simple elven family as their own, the adopted elven boy found solace in their love and little desire to find out where he came from.  Identity is something that elves struggle with much less than humans, their prolonged lifespan and more naturalistic outlook likely the cause.  His childhood was surprisingly calm, his parents happy to let him pursue whatever training he might yearn for, surprised at his aversion to weaponry.  It certainly didn't hurt that he had little natural ability, but something about harming another, even in self-defense, seemed to hold him back.  He grew up focusing instead on ways to protect those and heal them, to try and prevent such means to even be necessary.

He currently has taken to traveling through the various lands offering his services to those that might need them, no exchange of payment necessary.  The Capitol of Cumbria is one such place, a place he currently resides within – so many to help, even down in the prison below, his kind hand hoping to make sure even those that are sentenced to life are not forced to live it out in pain.

Allan Brassbridge
Race - Human
Alignment - Indifferent
Aptitude - Magic
Spells - Force and Earth colleges
Skills - Melee, Bow, Dodge, Gambling, Haggle
Weapon(s) Used - Sword of air, and a Bow
Age - 42
Physical Description - An average height male at 6 foot even.  His body is still toned and strong despite many years out of the army.  His salt pepper hair hangs long and unkempt now and his face is covered with a mess of facial hair of the same color that has fallen into disarray.  He still carries him self in a manner that would suggest military training (at least when he is not drunk).
Alliance - Other (currently to the bottle)
Bio Allan Brassbridge grew up in the city of Cumbria (this being some 40 years ago, it was largely during the time before it stated its decline).  There he was schooled and was allowed to study the art of magick, hoping it would open many doors for him later in life.  When he was 17 he was drafted into the Cumbrian military to fight in a war, in this he had very little choice.

He served in the military for many years and experience many horrors of both magick and technology.  He became a fine warrior, and his most notable feat was was saving his squad, of about 50 men, from and enemy ambush.  In a blaze of steel and magick he struck down 100 foes that day.  For this he was awarded a medal and became a local hero to some of the men.  At the end of the war Allan found himself with no purpose left in life and haunted by the many whom he had slain.  In time he turned to alcohol to help him forget, and he spent years in bars and gutters, a far cry from the hero he had once been.

Elizabeth Dowering
Race Halfelf
Alignment Evil
Aptitude Magic
Spells - Mental, Necromantic Black, Conveyance
Skills - Persuasion (master)
Weapon(s) dagger
Age - 45, looks 29
Physical Description Elizabeth is nothing short of stunning. She manages to pass for human when the need be, but there is an undeniable ethereal beauty etched into her creamy flesh. A dark, captivating power lingers behind her near black gaze. She moves with predatory feline grace, but is more then capable of donning the persona and presence of any character her calculating mind can concoct. When not in disguise, she is donning the latest Tarant fashions: extravagant gowns and exquisitely designed feathered hats.
Alliance - Herself and/or the highest bidder
Bio All her life, Elizabeth has been underestimated. This has been her greatest blessing. No one could have imagined the small, unimpressive little half-breed from the kitchens would blossom into a breath-taking beauty, or that she would charm her way into the heart of her formerly sadistic and abusive employer. He was the first of many husbands to meet an untimely end, and to each and everyone of them Elizabeth was little more then something exotic to dangle from their arms and warm their beds.

By the age of 35, Elizabeth had had four husbands and had become the wealthiest woman in Tarant - in possession of shares in skyrocketing industries. It was only when suspicion about her latest husband's death reached feverish levels that she fled her estates with fortune in tow. She has been on the run working as a con artist ever since. Her lifestyle demands a constant flow of substantial funds

Weapon(s) Used - balanced sword (often coated with strong poison), throwing daggers
Age - Young
Alliance - No one expect himself, but was born in Tarant
Bio Jamien was born in Tarant to a prostitute who worked in Madame Lil's establishment. So far facts are known considering his heritage his father was a elf man who's name her mother did not learn as said male elf only preferred called 'Master' in their session where he went with master and slave foreplay. Jamien was grown to urban high tech city and considering his heritage and mother he early on mastered arts of persuasion (and seduction) and he became quite popular with local girls thanks his handsome looks. He dated even some rich women who took him as their full time pet which they pampered around and he became rich by receiving and also 'taking' some their gifts in their houses. Discreet fashion of course.

Over time, Jamien became fascinated by magic and also technology. Using his savings he went to local tech colleges and studied magic by few who resided in city. He seeked to somehow 'harmony' between two extreme forces which worked in Arcanum. He became adept in both fields but it resulted that his spells did not always work nor his inventions fully worked as intended. He was considered a 'failure' by both his mentors. His money ran dry and he went desperate and he using a ancient schema what he stole from his tech mentor along with ancient spell ritual scroll from magic mentor combined he builded device what he called Eldrict Engine. He then activated it......and result was massive explosion of steam, gears and magic and chaotic energies of ruptured dimension of warehouse he used build the device which caused all tech and all magic shutdown in Tarant for whole week! Not to mention his device somehow beckoned extra terrestrial entities (ghosts, demons and the like) and so he ran from Tarant and covered his tracks.

He then became a charming vagabond; a bandit who harassed travelers on road with mixing magic and tech for combat advantage. However in one fight his sword suddenly broke and left him unarmed expect for his throwing knives which he used in expert skill but then he was taken out by battle mage who was guarding the supply cargo going to Cumbria and so he was caught for long term banditry, murders, theft, burglary and numerous other crimes and cons what he had completed in past six years. He was solo operative with nickname 'Swiftblade' because thanks his varied combination of tech and magic his combat style was very swift and he killed with speed alone (and bit magic slow everyone down around him while he boosted his own speed). Now likely hanging, execution or other such awaits him and he has one chance to try break to escape from his predictatment......

lore

Very nice background I like how you integrated lils  ;D

So are you taking a Jack-of-all-trades master-of-none approach?

I get a combat rogue feeling from him. Is that right?

Zaer Darkwail

Yeah, jack-of-all trades and master of none approach and he is combat rogue (he was bandit after all). He can be quite good in throwing stuff at people as main offense but he can sneak on them and do nasty poisoned blade attack with well made tech sword. His magic overall gives slight edge and advantages. While tech mostly gives buffs. So his main failure was in trying combine magic and tech together in Eldrict Engine (feel free throw plot related to his mad experiment).

He was not skilled mage nor skilled technician pull off his ambittions which then backfired seriously which led him depart from Tarant as he became wanted man. So he became bandit who lived on road and charmed wenches in taverns in small communities where he sold loot and got supplies from and harassed in both sides of the war their supply caravans and using his wits and clever traps and ambushes win the day. Expect he ran out of luck as his sword broke because of his slightly higher magical nature and he was resorted to throwing attacks but got then knocked out by a far more skilled mage whom his resist magic did not work. So he will be in the pit waiting for his trial. But he plans bust out with some daring do tactic.

lore

Gotcha. Just to add some balance, lets say that Zaer's tech skills don't quite hold up against Johnathan's or Keldric's, and the same goes for his magic vs. Alaric or anyone who has chosen a purist route. Magic and tech tend to fizzle each-other out after all.

If you're happy with that, then welcome aboard.

Zaer Darkwail

I am fine with that my tech or magic skills do not match up against purist types. He knows just wide variety of tricks and comparing the two the magic works more reliably but does not work much at all in any heavy tech setting but in tech setting he would use his tech skills more. But his innate minor magical natura makes tech stuff not work 100% power.

Thadeus Darkgate
Race: Human
Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Aptitude: Technical
Skills: Mechanical, Fire arms and explosives
Weapons: fine revolver, mechanized rifle, three fragmentation Stick bombas and two stun grenades
Equipment: Mechanical face mask with artificial eyes

Drawback: Broken mind, prone to violent outbursts. Striving to build the perfect machine of war, as an act of devotion to the machine he is obsessed with crafting the perfect gun. He hopes it will be so powerful a single man would become an army.

Having served in the army for many years, Thadeus' life came to a crashing halt from a grievous injury. During a great battle he was hit in the face by a fire bolt, nearly killing him. The wound took his eyes and left his face a waxen parody. The professors of the mechanical college crafted a mask for him with a build in pair of eyes. It required to be bolted to his face and connected to his nerves. Since then it has been a constant reminder of the day that changed his life, warping him from a gallant man to a cold and bitter one. The deans at the science academies deemed him to unstable to continue education on school ground, banished for his near blasphemous worship of machines and the level of destruction his creations caused. Shunned by the Army for what he has become, he has began to wander, selling his knowledge and battle prowess to those who can pay for his service.

Let me know what you thing and if anything needs to be changed.
