It's been a while since we had a game here! I've been inspired to run a forum based edition of the Towns of Salem flash game. (It's super fun! We've played it on the past few game nights. ^^)

Now, ToS has 29 roles. But there's no way we'll be using all of them. Some of them would make the game WAY too complicated. The maximum to a game is 15, but I'd feel lucky just to get 10. :-)

This will also be a little different from other mafia games in the fact that everyone will receive a different role. There are 3 different categories; town, mafia, and neutral. Obviously, the townies are the good guys. The mafia are the bad guys, and neutral is neutral.

*The rules for the roles will be different than what you're used to as well, so please take note.*

Roles

Good Guys
Bodyguard - (Ignores Night Immunity) Protect one person from death each night. Can protect the same person multiple nights in a row. Can protect themselves once. If the person the bodyguard is protecting is attacked during the night, then both the bodyguard and the attacker are killed in the process.

Doctor - Chooses one person to heal each night. Can choose the same target to heal each night. Can heal themselves once. This role will be played differently than you are used to. The Doctor must choose a person each night, without any knowledge on whether they will be attacked or not. Before, this role was more specific (the doctor knew who was going to be attacked, and was presented with the option to heal them or not), and had limited uses. Now, the role has unlimited uses, but the downfall is that they no longer know who will be attacked until after the fact. If the Doctor chooses a target to heal and that target is attacked during the night, then the doctor will be messaged with a notification that their target was attacked.

Investigator - Investigates one person each night for a clue as to their role. Ignores Detection Immune roles. You will receive a notification with the clue. They are as follows:

Not all roles listed here will be used in the game
Bodyguard, Jailor, or Lookout - Your target is a protector.
Transporter or Arsonist - Your target smells of gas.
Doctor or Serial Killer - Your target works with knives.
Consort or Escort - Your target is a manipulative beauty.
Investigator or Consigliere - Your target gathers information.
Godfather or Mayor - Your target is a leader among men.
Sheriff, Retributionist, or Executioner - Your target seeks justice.
Spy or Blackmailer - Your target works with secret information.
Veteran, Vigilante or Mafioso - Your target works with weapons.
Disguiser or Jester - Your target enjoys tricking people.
Janitor or Medium - Your target works with dead bodies.
Framer* - Your target is good with documents.
Amnesiac - Your target does not remember their role.
Survivor or Witch - Your target is a loner.

*Framed targets will appear as the Framer role.

Retributionist - (Unique Role) Revives one person from death. Can only be used once. Can only be used on townies, which includes the Amnesiac if they choose to assume a townie role. This role can be of great benefit to the townies if the Retributionist lives long enough to revive an important role. The townies can win the game if this role plays their cards right.

Vigilante - Chooses to take justice into their own hands, and shoot someone during the night. Cannot shoot anyone the first night. Only has 3 bullets. Your attack does not ignore night immunity (Godfather, Bodyguard with vest on, Doctor healing themselves). If the Vigilante shoots an innocent person, they put their gun away and commit suicide. You can be killed by the bodyguard.

Mafia
Framer - Choose one person to frame each night. Investigators will see framed targets as the Framer. If there are no Mafia killing roles left, you become the Mafioso.

Godfather - (Night Immunity, Detection Immunity, Unique Role) Order the Mafioso to kill your target. You cannot be killed at night.

Mafioso - (Unique Role) Vote on someone to kill each night. If the Godfather orders you to kill a different target, you must kill that target. If the Godfather does not order you to kill a target, you may kill anyone you wish.

Neutral
Amnesiac - Does not have a role. May select a role from one of the deceased players, and assume that role for the rest of the game. You may not select a unique role; Godfather, Mafioso, Retributionist.

Executioner - (Night Immunity) Get your target lynched by any means necessary. Your target will always be a townie. If your target dies during the night phase, you become a Jester.
Jester - Trick the town into lynching you. After you are lynched, you may kill someone who voted for you that night. This ability ignores Night Immunity, so it allows you to kill the Godfather if you know who it is. This person commits suicide over guilt for lynching you.

Night Immunity - Roles with this notation must be killed during the lynching phase. The only exception is if the Godfather attacks someone who is protected by the Bodyguard.

Detection Immunity - Roles that appear innocent when investigated. The Investigator role ignores Detection Immunity.

How does this game work?

The game is a strategy and sneaking game, not a role play. Though plenty of 'role playing' is done in the 'flavor text' (voting), the primary point of the game is to discover the mafia, or kill off the townies depending on your alignment. The players are assigned a role before the game begins with townies, mafia and neutral roles. Feel free to make descriptions of what you are doing, have fun with it, etc, but these will not affect the game-play.

How do you win?

~Townies win when all the mafia are eliminated.
~Mafia wins when all the townies are eliminated.
~Executioner wins when they get their target lynched, no matter if the mafia or the townies prevail.
~Jester wins by getting himself lynched, no matter if the mafia or townies prevail.

Notes

~Once the game has started, no new players can join unless requested by the GM to replace a member who had to leave.
~You must have access to PMs to play this game. I'm sorry unapproved members.
~The game decides your alignment, not your friendships.
~Your roles will be PM'ed to you before the game starts.
~The mafia are made aware of who other mafia are after the GM has made the opening post.
~You are required to post/vote. Anyone who has not voted for three rounds is likely to be removed by the GM to keep the game running smoothly.
~Mafia cannot attack other mafia.
~Night phases are when the mafia pick a target to eliminate. Day phases are when people publicly vote against who they think the mafia are.
~If someone is kept alive by a special role, you know that person is innocent. (Use this to your advantage, special roles! These people are on your side! Talk to them!)
~The game is a game of lies and deception. Lying about your role, motivation and what others have said/done in private is encouraged.
~Players are encouraged to talk among themselves, form alliances, and etc. Please add persephone325 to any game related PMs!
~Remember that everything you hear could be a lie... who can you really trust?

Rules for the Forum Games

Dead characters don't talk. If/When you die, you should not post in the active game thread until the game has ended. Do not discuss the game with anyone of the living players, and do not discuss the game where living players can see it. This applies especially to the OOC threads. You can always chat with your fellow ghosts, and with the GM, but make sure no one living can read it.
*The only exception to this rule is when the Retributionist revives you.

There's no copy machine. You cannot directly quote/copy anything game related that was told to you anywhere other than in the active game. For example, you can tell others what role you received (and lie about it), but you cannot actually quote the text stating your role. Likewise, you can tell others what people told you (and make stuff up), but you can't actually quote what they said to you. You can of course quote anything said in the game thread, since everyone can read it. For clarification, copying someone's text without using the board quote tags is still quoting and still against the rules.

Monitor the game, not the players. Do not go check the Who's Online often to see what players are doing. Do not go check when each player was last online right after a certain action occurred. Base your opinions on what players are saying, not on outside elements!

The game decides the team. If you're a bad guy, and your best buddy is not, then so be it. You are still supposed to kill each other. Do not tell anyone your role, just because they're a friend of you.

Games are for fun. This is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. Keep this in mind when playing, and don't try to think anything bad about the other players. See them as enemies or suspects in the game, but friends outside the game!

Keep the GM entertained. Whenever you send another player a PM regarding the game, send it to me as well. I'd like to read up on the discussion between players :)

Rules for Voting

Voting is mandatory. You cannot abstain from voting. After all, a major part of the game is based on deducting the voting pattern of other players. Preferably, everyone should vote as fast as possible, but of course people also have other things on their mind, so it's impractical to force people to vote within a certain time limit. However, if you have time to reply to the thread, you also have time to post your vote. (Your first post should contain a vote, when applicable).

Please do not hold back your vote until there are more votes in. If everyone starts thinking like that, then eventually nobody would vote anymore. Just bring out a random vote, and change your vote at a later time, if you found a more suitable target.

Votes can always be changed. Until a "Final Lynch Vote" tally is posted, you may change your vote as many times and as often as you like.

Please do not consider the person that votes first a 'bad guy', simply for the reason that they voted first. That person just happens to be the person to check the thread first, and if everyone always accuses the person first to vote, then nobody will vote first anymore, meaning nobody will vote anymore.

Do not vote based on game experience. Just because Valerian plays in every game, or Saffron is the GM in most games, that doesn't make them a target. The point of the game is to play well, and I will not accept votes based on "Well they're a strong player... we should take them out first." (This applies to lynching and assassinations).

Vote in bold. Whenever you cast a vote on someone, be sure to put the name in [ b ]bold[ /b ], so I can easily check who is being voted on.

You cannot vote on yourself for the lynch. You can only vote on others.

Do not edit your posts. If you change your opinion, make a new post with your new vote. Everything that's said in the thread should be visible at all times.

I'm definitely open for suggestions on roles you'd like to see in place of others, or ones you'd rather not see. ^^

Please only reply if you are going to join the game! Thank you.

We don't need 15 players. That's the maximum for a regular ToS game.

I'd love to join.

I know the rules say you can't abstain from voting but in the actual ToS game you can so will this be an option here? Or maybe something like No vote.

Blythe

Never played the flash game, but I wouldn't mind jumping in on another forum mafia game. :-)

Ah! That is something I forgot about.

Before I make a decision, I'd like to see how people feel about having the Executioner/Jester included. The Jester's ability relies on votes, so I want to know how everyone feels about it before I make a ruling.

Also if a role like the Medium is used how would that work since the dead can't talk is one of the rules listed?

The Medium isn't included, which is why that rule is still in effect. The above roles are the ones I picked, to see how running a game with them might work. Though if someone has an aversion to any of them, then I don't mind see what they suggest in its place.

If it's alright with everyone, I will not be adding the following roles:

Escort
Medium
Spy
Transporter
Veteran

Blackmailer
Consort
Disguiser

Arsonist
Serial Killer
Witch

These roles tend to make the game a bit more confusing. Especially if anyone playing this time hasn't played a ToS game before. If all goes well and people enjoy it, I may run it again with some of these roles included.

Fine with me. Will there be more roles than the ones you have up in case there are more people than the number of roles? If not will there be people that will have the same role?

I just noticed on your list of roles you aren't including, you have the Framer listed... but it's one of the available roles in the role section... Did you mean something else there, sweetie?

I would very much like to play!  And I am very sorry I couldn't make it to your last game, Remiel -- your invitation came during a hectic time during which I all but vanished.  From the world.

No worries.  It happens to the best of us. :)

Elina

Okay, I'm in, and I'm trying to get Aislinn and Marikir to be in too.

Elina

Thanks, yugi!  I've only done a game like this once before (Saffy's Romeo and Juliet), but hopefully, this will go for me like that one did and not like the game night version, where I almost always am killed the first night.   ::)

yugi006

Well as you know this one is a little different with everyone having a different role so who knows. Well lucky for you I'm the one that tends to be targeted the first night whenever we play here.

Blythe

*waves hi to Elina!*

Yay, more players! <3
