The Governor of California imposed mandatory restrictions on residents to cut back on water usage by 25%. This is because of a drought that has been in effect since 2002.

Aside from upgrades in water treatment technology this is one of the few things California can do. I also manage a stock portfolio so perhaps I should pick up a water stock some time.

I just did that today too.  I went with Consolidated Water (CWCO), I think it's undervalued at the moment.

I'll PM you about water stocks soon. ^^

Back on topic, I just learned that the nation of Brazil is also going through a huge drought with reservoirs at 10-17% capacity (apparently infrastructure really is terrible there). As a result, Brazillans are being forced to curb their 12 showers a week addiction.

This popped up in the news here. A Russian trawler has sunk, with many casualties. There were some people that were saved, but a lot of them had hypothermia because of the cold. The captain is confirmed to be dead.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32157040

At the time I read the story, the search for 15 missing people from the vessel was ongoing. I hope that the survivors will have swift recoveries. And my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of those that were confirmed to have died in the cold waters.  :-\

If this is real, I will laugh so hard. It couldn't happen to a better bunch of low life scum. It is sad that it's affecting others, but ISIS deserves every bit of pain and suffering they make.

For those of us in the U.S., today is an election day.  Since it's an 'off' election, the kind with notoriously low turnout (they're predicting about 20% turnout around here, for instance), it's an election where extreme groups like to try to push controversial amendments and laws through.  Around here, they're trying something that even the New York Times is talking about.  Anyone who's interested in their local / state politics should research what's on the ballot in their area and head out to vote!  :)

Greece has asked Germany for war reparations.  It's a bit old but I found myself remembering this Daily Mash article.

Election day today? o.O  *checks*  Uum.. Not here in Idaho at least. The local and state and federal elections here all tend to be in November. Unless it's for an emergency election to replace someone. Or it's a primary, but other than that, the only elections or voting that is done here at this time is something like school levies and such. Any other voting/elections are done at the end of the year.

Valerian

No?  Most states seem to have something going, like spring primaries, etc.  We've got some school board elections aside from the supreme court elections and the referendum.  There's a state by state list here: http://elections.mytimetovote.com/dates/default.html

Our last day to register before the primary isn't until the 20th.  I saw 6 states with active elections today:  Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.  It's the first day that someone can vote by absentee ballot in Indiana, the last day that one can file an application for an absentee ballot in Arkansas, and New Jersey county clerks just published the notification of mail-in ballot availability.

Ah, it's registrations that happen this month. There are a few elections in May, but none in April.

Valerian

Hm, I guess we're a little early, then.  I always thought spring elections happened very close together, with a lot of them on the same day, but hey, I've learned my new fact for the day.   ::)  And it's still usually a low turnout election, unfortunately, regardless of exactly when it happens...

A woman up here in Canada was convicted of pouring superglue into her seven-week old nephew's ears. The motive was jealously because she didn't have any sons herself.

Super glue Into the babie's ears..... which required surgery to remove......That mother is handling it better than I ever would have, Id end up in jail for seeking my own brand of justice against.

And reading the article the father claimed he found a needle in the babies carseat.... They would need an army to stop me from getting to her.  >:(

I realize how immensely irate the mother must have been against the convicted woman in this case, however I'm appreciative that she let the court system handle justice in this case. If she had wounded or even killed the abuser, then like you said she would have gone to jail. It's not that I have any pity for the convicted woman in this case, but that child will need his mother more than ever to cope in this world, and she couldn't provide for him from prison.

Polish parliament finally tries to tackle the issue of in-vitro fertilization:

http://www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/202939,Parliament-to-debate-IVF-bill

One of the bill projects, created by the Law and Justice party, proposes that the doctors conducting IVF should be punished with prison time... L&J actually tried to amend their project and change the penalty to "just" revoking the doctors' licenses, but that didn't happen due to formal complications.

China is proposing to build a railway link through/beneath the Himalayas, from Lhasa to Katmandu, where it would connect with the railway network of India. The project would likely involve a huge tunnel under the Mount Everest massive. Due to the beyond difficult terrain and the amounts of snow even at lower altitudes, train speed would be limited to about 120 km per hour/75 mph.

If the project happens it would begin somewhere in the 2020s, by which time both China and India will have populations of around 1½ billion people.

Signatures for a recall election are being collected for a judge in Orange County, California. Marc Kelly gave a 19-year old man convicted of sodomizing his three-year sister a 10-year sentence when the minimum mandatory statute is 25-years. Kelly was moved by the mother's plea that her son accepted responsibility and is "sexually frustrated". The judge also expressed concerns that the sentence would be deemed as "cruel and unusual punishment" as dictated by the eighth amendent. The prosecution is trying to get an appeal for what they argue is an illegal sentence.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/09/us/california-judge-sentencing-child-sodomy-recall-effort/index.html

Thoughts? I don't feel the judge has his individual right to dictate what he deems to be appropriate sentences, especially when they don't match the statutes, otherwise for example, judges could sentence those guilty of manslaughter to death. Regardless of the state of the defendant or what the judge deemed the severity of the crime to be, doing things like this to kids causes both permenant mental and physical damage. As for the mother, was it known that her son had these problems before being left with her toddler-age daughter. If so then why was the little girl put in a vulnerable situation?

Yeah, that guy should have, at the least, gotten the minimum 25 year sentence. Raping a 3 year old girl is is only a 10 year sentence? WTF judge?! Judges do not, or should not, have the ability to reduce any sentence below the state/federally mandated minimum limit.  This 19 year old needs to be behind bars for a damned long time. Sexually frustrated is NOT an excuse to rape anyone for any reason.

I know it's 'old' news but a few things...

1. Send that cop to prison for the rest of his life.
2. Give the guy who filmed it a pullitzer price.
3. Why is the police still covering for each other on this? Why can't they just say, the officer was wrong and we'll fire him on the spot. People do get fired for a lot less.

4. With all these police shootings going on in the US, I don't find it all that strange that people might run away from the police. If the only authority you have an officer is your weapon, you should find another job.

I hope the government of the US, whichever, finally makes a stand on this, power hungry, nazi police force. I for one, will not go to America for a while when I am at risk of being shot by some gestapo member and I will not advice any of my clients to go either. In India you get raped, in the US you get shot.

Best stay in Europe really. Might be bankrupt, at least you don't get shot or raped.  ::)

Not that all America police are bad, most are good. But there's still enough bad, or trigger happy, I think, that's scarey.

Follow-up on this one:  the cop has been fired, and his lawyer has dropped the case.

http://reverbpress.com/justice/slager-charged-murder-lawyer-dumps-case/

QuoteCharleston attorney David Aylor told The Daily Beast that he took on Slager as a client on Saturday, the day of the shooting, and removed himself as counsel on Tuesday afternoon.
