There is an amazing film about this that gives so much better an impression of the sheer, overwhelming presence of the place than still photos, but I can't remember the name of it right now. It was on the History Channel several years back.

Theres a place in Rome that is very similiar. Its part of a church-complex near the center of Rome. Its two stories up, but below the floor of the church. Three or four rooms full of bone-ornaments. Also has the bodies of the Monks (the bones are from poor people) still with their skin etc (100+ years old) standing or laying around. Not allowed to take photos but i did get postcards. The SO thought it was the creepiest thing ever. I thought it was pretty cool.
