I think running actual combat would be good for the game. Rather then it just taking place in boot camp. I vote for extreme exotic, not just for the possible combat but also given the situation and back story.

Well I expect it to start out like Full metal jacket, with a boot camp section and a combat section. They would probably be separate threads.

Alright that sounds like fun. I can't wait! I do have one last question though. Will the aliens be more like bugs from Starship Troopers or Xenomorphs from the Alien series, or just some random hostile species?

It's a surprise!

AKunoichi

Okay I was gonna post the IC, BUT HOLY FUCK THERE'S A PROBE LANDING ON MARS RIGHT NOW!

Dammit! I've just discovered this game, which sounds great (even though I despised the Starship Troopers movie I loved the novel and the 'Roughnecks' animated series, and the 1990s TV series 'Space Above and Beyond' which sounds like it could fit in quite nicely with this setting) - and then I find out that it's already full!  *sigh*

Can I at least go on the short list in case a vacancy crops up?

AKunoichi

Yes feel free.

As for the Starship Troopers movie, I am conflicted on it. It's a very fun movie, but it was written as a direct insult to the book. Im also torn over ALIENS. It's a fun movie, but it tries to hard to be a heavy handed Vietnam allegory that dosn't really work. (if the VC were xenomorphs we would have been able to just bomb Vietnam into dust and win the war) The plot goes out of it's way to make the humans stupid just to so Aliens can win.

Although to be fair, the only Vietnam allegory that actually felt like Nam was the Forever war.

ANYWAYS, rant over. What kind of character would you make were there room?

Well there are a couple of characters whom I've used as base templates for characters in several different roleplaying genres.

One idea I had for this game was a former gang survivor who had gotten his act together and joined up when the news about the 51 Pegasei incident hit the media, hoping his toughness and MMA/shootfighting experience would be enough to get him into the Marines to help him make a break with his old life and get a clean start. Unfortunately Kobrakid and Irish Wolf already had male CQC specialists written up, so I bopped this idea on the head and dumped it by the roadside.

The idea I wound up going with was a guy whose family have been US Marines for generations, so there's the expectation that he'll join the Corps and serve as well, and he's wanted to do so fromn a young age. On the other hand his dad, who runs a construction business utilising his experience as a US Marine combat engineer, doesn't want him to join up in case he comes home in a body bag. However my character still wants to join up, especially after word of the 51 Pegasei incident hits the news. He's quite fit and he's got a fair idea of what things were like in the USMC from family stories and chatting with their service buddies, but he'd still be in for a shock when he finally goes through basic training. I'm not trying to make my character a Marty Stu or anything, but you mentioned in the OOC thread that doing things too well in Basic was as bad as screwing up - I was thinking of having my character do that. Something like the following...

DI: Davis, you completed the obstacle course with no major problems. Congratulations!
Character: (smugly) Sir, thank you sir!
DI: But the rest of your squad had trouble. Now, what's the main lesson that one of you maggots who wants to be a Marine needs to learn? I'll tell you, maggot! It's TEAMWORK! And as a member of their squad, you need to show teamwork by showing them how it's done!
Character: <hesitantly> ..Sir?
DI: And they've been having so much trouble with this simple obstacle course you need to show each one of them individually how it's done properly! Pick one, take them around the course showing them how it's done properly, and finish here. Then pick another one and do it again until you've shown them all ho it's done properly. There are eight others in your squad, since you are a maggot rather than a human and therefore can't count, so that will be another eight laps around the obstacle course! Understood, Davis?
Character: Sir, yes sir!  <thinks to himself> Oh fuck...

And here's the character sheet...

Name: Davis, Russell Kevin
Appearance: Russell stands six foot even in height with a lean but surprisingly well-defined build. His hair is dark brown and wavy, his eyes are normally deep blue but pale to an icy shade when he is truly angry, and his clean-shaven features are quite handsome.
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Age: 18
Nationality: American
Aptitude: Leadership. You have a natural charisma and can take change in stressful situations. This makes you a prime candidate for promotion to squad leader, but will also attract unwanted attention from your superiors.

Chaeronea, if you are still interested, you can join, Just assume your character was there the whole time.
As for people who are in but have been lagging behind, I'm assuming you are still there but have managed to stay out of trouble.
Also there are a bunch of implied but unseen characters. It's a Platoon of about 30 ish people roughly evenly divided between men and women.

If new people want to join after this. Same rules follow, read the backlogs and submit a character to me, If I agree, you can pretend you were there the whole time.

For specialities, I'll prefer people at this stage be generalists, or use a speciality that hasn't been taken yet. This will change if somebody drops out. A Chaplin* or lucky person would be cool.

*A Chaplin does not have to be a prude, this is the future of the 70s, the sexual revolution never ended, modern medicine cured aids before it could take hold, and the conservative movement is dead in the water. Most religions have become more liberal and neopagan/new age religions are more common.
