So this will be more of a 'wacky hijinx ensue' style game than a plot-driven game, since you're entering as a co-player rather than an NPC/GM?

I know several GMs who also play PCs and do so seamlessly.  I've written with Wargtass before and am not only super impressed with his literary work, but with his willingness to cooperate OOC to solve problems.  He's the bee's tonsils!

*off stage whisper*

What?  Knees?  Oh, crumb!

Blobbe

Actually, before I go any further towards character creation I'd like to know what section you're going to put the game in.

HangedMan, you're not going to be able to fit a Beagle Probe or an AMS into a Valkyrie unless you take something else out first (It's already got both Endo Steel structure and Ferro-Fiberous armour). With that being said, it's allready a fine scout as it it without adding anything to it.

I have no reason to doubt you or anything you've said, and I'm sure playing with Wargtass will be a great experience. I've just learned to expect different things from games where the creator of the game intends to be a full PC alongside the other PCs, rather than taking on a primarily NPC role, which helps me avoid getting my wires cross from expecting the other style of play.

Branwen

I realized after I posted that I could have come off sounding shrill.  Thank you very much for not taking it that way and approaching it with confidence and courtesy!  I apologize if I did not.

Is there anything I can do to help you make up your mind to play?  I confess I creeped on your profile for posts and I like how you write.  You're doing what I am working on doing better; writing less internally and more externally with description and gestures and physical flow instead of introspection and inner monologue.

Huh? I'm already planning on playing, I wanted the antique King Crab, remember? ;D

I just want to get a feel for what the game will be going in. I'm not turned away/off by either the character-driven, GM-less game, or the plot-driven, GM-directed game, just that playing one and expecting the other will spoil the experience.

Branwen

Oh, good!  That's so nice to hear.

Is there anything you think I could to to play something that would make your time better?

Whatever you think will be fun for you?

*litttttttle creeped out, but not in a bad way :D*

EDIT: Also, found yet one of the many reasons why Atlases are badass:

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

EDIT 2: Are we part of an elite, crack merc group, or a more hardscrabble outfit? It'll affect my mech variant choice primarily, but it'll look odd if we're the best of the best and my ride is an old, beat-up hunk of junk.

I always forget this. And I have always found that asking the people what they think will ultimately result in something good. That way I have plausible deniability the best players ever! :D

Very badass indeed. Like this:

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

I'm thinking that we are an elite group but perhaps not too well off. But you could also verify a King Crab by the prestige of age. Perhaps the unit is very proud of their ancient 'Mech and try to maintain it even though it is expensive.

I'm thinking that it will be a macro-plot on a micro-scale. While most of us seem to at least know the basics of the Clan Invasions, I think not many actually think about the plot on the micro-scale. Even in the novels it's remarkable people who influence the macro-scale. I'm thinking however that our group will be remarkable pilots without the influence. Ordinary warriors with balls of steel but without the fame. I guess I didn't answer it all too well, but that's because I'm still working with the plot-side.

Character

Pilot

Name: Yamina "Mina" Kazi
Sex: Female
BattleMech: LCT-1V Locust
Homeworld: Astrokaszy
Original Faction: The Independent Caliphates of Astrokazy, Khalifeh ül-Rasul Rub al-A’alimin Mehmed XXIV

Description: Yamina is short, not even five feet tall, and slender.  Her hair is so pale blonde it looks white and she has dark, expressive brown eyes.

Background: Astrokazy was ever a warrior's world, racked by brutality and sectarian violence.  Instead of banding together when invaded by the Marian Hegemony in 3025, the caliphates sought to curry favor with the invaders and continue their mindless violence against their neighbors.  As other Periphery governments came in, and finally a peace keeping force from House Marik, the civil war continued to rage, fueled often by covert support from House Kurita and House Davion.  Yamina was a young child-warrior cadet for one of the Sultans, and received her training due to unusual piloting aptitude which is sadly not mirrored in her gunnery.  Soon after actively joining the ranks of the Faithful, her city-state collapsed and she, along with others, had to find passage off world with what equipment they could in order to prevent being sent on to Paradise by their conquerors.  Mina escaped with a Locust and has found employ as a reconnaissance specialist with the unit.

Personality: Despite the background and opportunity, Mina is not a fanatic about her former home or her religion.  She observes the faith, but does not proselytize or hate the infidel.  She spends as much time building relationships with other members of the unit as some spend on their guns, Mechs or whiskey.  She has a soft spot for children.

Speciality Skills: It has not yet come up, but Mina is a very accomplished battlefield medic.

BattleMech Characteristics
Chassis: Bergan VII
Weight Class: Light
Callsign: Little Bit
Description: Mina's Locust is in fair condition, though there's a long crease across the left carapace where an autocannon round from a Hunchback glanced off.  There are no distinguishing unit markings and her paint schemes are always subdued and appropriate to the environment she expects to operate in.  The only adornment is a bit of Arabic script below the left side of her cockpit hatch.

Loadout: 2 Sperry-Browning machineguns, 1 Martell 5cm laser.

Modules: None

Upgrades: None

General Armor Values:
H 8
CT 10/2
R/L Torso 8/2
R/L Arm 4
R/L Leg 8

I'm happy for it to be in Light or Bondage, but not in NC or Extreme.

orderNchaos

I'll throw a Character up tomorrow, need to head to bed!  Cheers!

Branwen

Wargtass, can you give us a brief idea of the weight classes of the lance(s)?  I don't know if I should be looking at an Assault 'Mech to play with the Highlanders and King Crabs and Marauders, or if we need some light scout 'Mechs.  Any input or just choose what feels shiny?

Wargtass

I'd like to have a pretty well balanced pair of lances. With a Highlander and King Crab I think we might have filled up the Assaults pretty well. I guess I could allow an extra here or there If you really like to have something.
O/O

Branwen

That's good.  So look for something for a scout role.  Any objections to a SDR-5V Spider or a FLC-4N Falcon?

TheGlyphstone

Wait, aren't we working for Steiner? Our scout should also be an Assault mech. ;D

Branwen

There's a reason they have a mailed fist as a sigil.   8-)

TheHangedOne

Tweaked the mech a bit. Removed AMS and BAP.  Still no clue for a homeworld, something to figure out tomorrow, though.

Are you from the Lyran Commonwealth?  If so, I have a few suggestions.  If not, tell me what Great House and I'll find something.

Yes, the Lyran Commonwealth.

May I suggest:

World Name: Hesperus II

Hesperus II has been characterized as having about as much physical appeal as an 80-year old lady of easy virtue.  Approaching the planet, the visitor immediately notices the innumerable mountain ranges and canyons crisscrossing the four major continents like wrinkles or the grids of some warped game board. And a game board it has been, for Hesperus, with its huge BattleMech factory in the Myoo Mountains, is the crux of the Commonwealth’s military strength. It has been attacked 14 times by enemy Houses, but all attempts to destroy the factory have so far failed. The terrain of Hesperus is unforgiving and has proven to be as much an obstacle to foreign attackers as have the planet’s defenders. Not much can grow on Hesperus II, except in the Melrose Valleys or in the terraced mountains just outside of Maria’s Elegy, the largest city on Hesperus II. Due to the planet’s lack of arable land, the population has always been small, consisting mainly of employees at the ‘Mech factory.

Or

World Name: Alexandria

Alexandria is one of the most war ravaged planets in the Federation. When not the target of an all-out invasion, Alexandria suffers almost constant raiding by House Kurita. The result is that this once idyllic world of pastoral beauties and rich resources has become a virtual sea of mud churned up by the weight of marching ‘Mechs. There was a time during the Good Years when Alexandria was a cultural center whose art collections were famous throughout the Inner Sphere. Hints of that more graceful era still exist in the far flung cities of Lam Pole or Cherbourg, which have no military importance and so were relatively untouched by war. There have been efforts recently to rebuild Alexandria’s shattered cities and torn lands. So accustomed to war, the planet’s people stoically wonder to what good use they can put the remains of the new buildings after the next battle reduces them to rubble.

TheHangedOne

Thanks, Branwen! Alexandria it is. Character sheet modified appropriately.

Pilot

Name: Alroy Fletcher Yoshikawa
Sex: Male
BattleMech: King Crab
Homeworld: Solaris VII (Xolaras Suburbs)
Original Faction: Marik

Description: In his mid-to-late 40's, short (5'5"), with a barrel-chested wrestler's build. Black hair kept trimmed back to a close shave, dark eyes. Wound scars laced across his torso and right arm - his left arm is unscarred, but he favors his right for anything needing manual dexterity.

Background:
Born to a pair of Free Worlds League ex-patriates, grew up in Solaris City watching Mechwarrior duels and working in scrap and salvage yards. Lacking the patronage to become a professional duelist, he signed on with a mercenary regiment and shipped off-planet. His career from that point was long and varied, but unexceptional, serving in campaigns for every major House and across a good portion of the Inner Sphere.

His luck changed - somewhat - when he saved the life of a minor nobleman of House Kurita, the elderly and childless warrior adopted him and gifted him with the antique but functional King Crab KGC-000 battlemech that had been his own 'Mech for decades. This upset the Kurita nobleman's extended family to see such a valuable machine go outside their own bloodline, forcing Alroy to flee outside their reach with his prize. Since then, he has continued to drift from contract to contract, serving with mercenary groups for as long as they can afford the upkeep of his Crab that he calls 'Tanya' for an unexplained reason.

Personality: Jovial and friendly, but reserved. He has a tendency towards introspection, making cryptic comments and perfectly content to sit staring into space and reliving old memories for long stretches of time. Fending off a smattering of bargain-budget but commendably enthusiastic assassins over the years courtesy of his 'adoptive family' have left him with a lingering distrust of anyone visibly of Kurita heritage, though he tries to hide it.

Speciality Skills: Skilled mechanic, accomplished personal hand-to-hand combatant, writes poetry.

BattleMech Characteristics

Chassis: King Crab KGC-000
Weight Class: Assault
Callsign: Vice
Description: Visibly extremely old with a hodgepodge of newer replacement components, under a desert camo patterning.

Loadout:
(2x) Deathgiver AC/20
Bulldog Large Laser
Coventry Starfire LRM-15

Modules:
CASE

Upgrades:
Ferro-Fibrous Armor

General Armor Values: Heavy Armor
