A new law was signed by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and went into effect on Thursday that has abortion advocates up in arms. The new law, titled Women’s Health and Safety Act deems a woman pregnant 2 weeks before conception.

Ok so not literally...but according to the new Arizona Law, listed above, Pregnancy apparently starts 2 weeks before conception. It was put in place as an Anti-Abortion law, but whether you are against abortion or for it, it still sounds insane.

I mean really...pregnancy starts two weeks before conception? How does that even work? @_@

A normal pregnancy is dated based on a 40 week calendar used by a physician to determine length of pregnancy and the age of the embryo/fetus. This calendar is calculated based on the first day of the last menstrual period, not on the day of conception. For example, if a woman is 6 weeks into a pregnancy, the embryo was conceived during week 2, not week 0.

However, the calendar was never meant to be used as a basis for the law that was signed by Gov. Brewer.

Arizona has set a limit of 18 weeks, I think it is, beyond which time it's considered a late-term abortion and therefore next to impossible to get done legally.  Adding in the extra two weeks that this law gives them, that means it's really sixteen weeks before it becomes late-term, for all practical purposes.  Some women may not even realize they're pregnant by then, or at least they won't have known about it for long, so it really just comes down to another way of limiting options.

So since women in Arizona are now all considered pregnant, do they get all the same benefits too? More money from tax returns, easier access to health insurance, guaranteed welfare benefits like food stamps and cash aid, and Drs have to accept them as new patients too? In fact I’m pretty sure pregnant women can get completely free health insurance if they can’t afford it. This could possibly be a good thing for poor women in Arizona. Women need to figure out how to use this new law against the state to benefit themselves. Being constantly pregnant could work out for them if they go about it correctly.
