This is all very vague, but I am posting this to see if there is enough support to consider starting a non-canon ST game.
I would prefer one based upon a Terran ship (though a handful of other races would be allowed as crew-members).
If this gets off the ground, I am also looking for one or two people who would be interested in GMing this with me, since I do not have the time to take on GM responsibilities by myself.
I see this as something more plot based (as opposed to pure smut), though crew members cannoodling in the privacy of their quarters will of course be allowed. :P
I am also curious to hear suggestions for a main plot line. I see this more as a scientific/discovery type vessel, not a war ship involved in some conflict.

Sounds like fun!

As for a main plot, you could simply leave it without one and lots of subplots. Otherwise, here are a few ideas:

1) You could snatch from the Star Trek series, like the lost in space idea. It opens up a lot of opportunity for side plots while allowing you to ignore the main plot without any real consequence.

2) You could have the crew searching for something that humanity, or someone else, desperately needs. This could be a cure for a strange disease, a device needed to kill an enemy, a missing ship, or even some other cliche.

3) You could have the crew being a plain vessel, that is slowly and unwittingly being influenced by an alien presence/device/etc. The reasons for which could be many...

I'm sure there are other ideas but that's all I've managed to come up with.

I have a hologram character already made up if I'd be allowed to reuse it.  (The game in which she was originally made died.)

Tisha - Hologram (Human appearance)

During one of the routine trades with the Ferengi, they offered over one of their holographic programs in order to sweeten a particular deal.  Some rumors circulated among the crew at the time that someone had met up with this particular girl and developed a bit of a crush, but that since her memory banks were wiped prior to the exchange, whatever affection had existed was never to be.

From what those who have researched her program have been able to piece together, she started out as a simple waitress hologram, but through extended use on a 24/7 holodeck, has developed enough sentience to understand her holographic nature, but not enough to start to question the existential matters that eventually form when holograms put serious consideration into their own existence.

She has a number of subroutines which might seem contradictory were they to run simultaneously within her program.  She has the capacity as an Emergency Medical Hologram, she can work as a bartender and counselor, and in a pinch, she possesses a Security subroutine to allow her to work as part of a security detail in an emergency.

She spends much of her time as the bartender upon the ship's lounge, but when needed in sickbay, a simple command is all that is necessary to have the computer instantly transport her and upload the Emergency Medical Hologram subroutines.

Between the extended use and multiple subroutines, a number of glitches have begun to make themselves known within her program.  For one, the original Ferengi program had followed the standard clothing practices of the species by removing all of her clothing.  Although this detail has been corrected, the occasional glitch causes her to become fully naked without warning.  Although rare, and apparently associated with deep searches within her memory banks, a significant number of the crew has already had the chance to see her.  Thankfully for her sake, her program rejected the modesty subroutines which would normally cause embarrassment.

Her personality also varies notably depending on which subroutine is currently active.  While working as a bartender, she appears more submissive, attentive and sometimes playfully flirtatious.  While acting as an Emergency Medical Hologram, sympathy shows strongly within her face, but her manner is much more professional, dedicating herself to aiding the injured.  When her Security subroutines are active, she's focused like a hawk, no-nonsense and aggressive.  Although her memories are unaffected, she does not recognize any inconsistencies within her personality unless they are specifically pointed out, which often causes some form of glitch.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

AndyZ, the suitability of your character depends upon the location of our game. If it's on a DS9 type space station, she could fit in. But she would not be suitable for an "Enterprise" type ship.

Sounds interesting, Ive never done a freeform star trek game.

As for plot I think it depends on the ships mission. It could just be an exploratory/research vessel on the rim of federation space and if thats the case the game could be run in more of an episodic feel. If that makes any sense.

Well take the various star trek shows. There was usually a long running plot, like with the original and next generation they were pretty much explorers, diplomats, and military personel protecting the federation. In voyager they got trapped in the gamma quadrant and had to make their way back.

During these long standing missions something would happen forming an episode. For example in next generation there were several episodes where the ship had to forge a peace between two races. First contacts were another kind of episode that happened a lot.

Does that make more sense?

Depends on the tech level.  If we're at the point where holograms can be generated throughout the ship, she can work.  If it's pre-holograms, then yeah, I'll have to think of something else.

I think it could be interesting to set the game post-DS9 and have the ship be an exploratory/science vessel exploring the Gamma Quadrant. With peace with the Dominion established our ship could go largely unmolested by hostile forces and go around with the blessing of the Gamma Quadrant's only superpower to do star mapping, examine anomalies, catalog phenomena unique to the Gamma Quadrant, encounter treknobabble one-off problems that muck with time and space that are solved by inverting mumble mumble tachyons mumble mumble deflector.

I think we would also have a fair bit of freedom in terms of what we would encounter and discover; it would be an almost entirely undiscovered sector of space for the Federation. There is also some plot fodder in the difficulty of the mission, owing to a lack of Federation presence in the Gamma Quadrant.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Actually, this brings about a good question, how strict is the game going to be with knowledge on Star Trek? Can anyone join or only those with a strong grasp of the setting?

Also, will there be a system of any sort?

Cold Heritage's suggestion for a setting appeals most to me.

So this roleplay will revolve about an exploratory ship on a mission of discovery and scientific research in the Gamma Quadrant.
Keep this in mind when you put together a CS. Use the template below.

I will allow non-human characters but I would prefer it if the majority of the crew was human.

Some suggestion for ranks/roles:

Commanding Officer
Executive Officer
Chief Engineering Officer
Chief Tactical Officer
Chief Science Officer
Chief Medical Officer
Chief Counselor
Civilian attached to the mission

Not all of these necessarily have to be filled, and if someone is more comfortable playing a subordinate to one of the above roles, that is fine too.

Rough draft, but I wanted to get something written up ASAP

Name: Angelo De Rica
Age: 24
Race: Human
Role/Rank: Sergent (enlisted), authority of Xenobiology and general medicine
Personality: Angelo is a very intelligent young man with an undying thrist for knowledge though hes a bit shy and has trouble getting close to people which often makes him struggle to find a place in any crew. Even though he has the drive and excellence to be an officer he takes pride in being a normal enlisted man, often noting that ships couldnt run without the everyday working soldier.
Background:Antonio was born and grew up in Florence, Italy. His parents were both doctors and part of an inter galactic study group specializing in disease research. Early on Angelo took an interest in medicine, when he read the studies that his parents often left lying around their villa and it drove him to learn as much as he possibly could from every source of information he could find.

It wasnt long before everyone that knew him realized he was much smarter then the average person and after some testing Angelo was certified as a true genius. He flew through early education, graduating from elementary schooling by age eight, then high school by age twelve, and by age 16 he already had a doctorate in medicine.

A year later one of his papers would be read by the scientific community and he was approached by a reknowned Andorian Xenobiologist to assist in some work. Their meeting sealed Angelo's true calling as his studies of strange organisms gave him far more intellectual pursuits to look forward to. However it was clear that staying on earth didnt provide the same opportunities that space did so he enlisted in Star fleet as a rank and file medic.

Antonio served on the Kitsune, a Maelstorm class fleet escort ship patrolling the edge of federation space. He might have served as a nurse aboard the ship, that is if they hadnt come across a damaged vessel with alien life forms aboard that the federation had never seen before. Unfortunately the creatures assumed the Kitsune had hostile intentions and attacked, boarding the ship and imprisoning the crew. However Antonio managed to escape along with the chief medical officer and captain. With Antonio's experience in Xenobiology they were able to force the aggressors off the ship by releasing a gas that caused a severe allergic reaction. Antonio quickly flew up the ranks on the ship, moving to the rank of Sergent in just three years after the incident (a feat that normally took 5-6).

However three months ago the Kitsune was damaged beyond repair during an evacuation mission and the crew reassigned to various ships around the fleet. Over his 7 years in star fleet Antonio had earned some of the greatest medals and enlisted man could. Everything about his file said he was an overachiever and a hero so he became a hot commodity around the fleet.

Starfleet appears more akin to a navy than other branches of armed service, so Petty Officer may be a more apt rank for Angelo. Maybe something to consider for the next draft, but ultimately a minor detail.

The ship also needs a name.

Race Human
Role/Rank Diplomatic Attache/ Consul, United Federation of Planets (acting Lieutenant)
Personality Calm, collected, mediator
Background
Gillian was born on the moon base to civilian parents and as she grew older made several trips to various Federation worlds with her replicator repairman father.  She picked up several federation languages and excelled in those studies but, to her fathe's disappointment, was never as skilled with the technical aspects.

Star Fleet was never considered as a serious possibility as she never had a chance at passing the Engineering section of the academy entrance exam and so she took a two year job as a translator to a mining company working on Vulcan.  While there she met various diplomats and once the job ended she enrolled for training with the Federation Diplomatic Service.

She moved slowly up the ranks acting as an assistant or "person sat round the table #4" but managed to impress at each stage until she was eventually being trusted with work on her own.

She's been attached to the <shipname> as a diplomatic attche in order to ensure that any contact made is handled well.  As is standard she's been given a temporary Star Fleet rank in order to clarify her position in the chain of command but she's not a Star Fleet person.  She struggles to remember rank insignia, has never been trained with a phaser and doesn't have all the access permissions to the computer system her nominal rank would indicate.

Do we have some Idea the size of the vessel we will be serving on? In star trek the exploratory vessels are usually one of the largest class of vessels fielded by a fleet at a given time. Will we be having families live with us on the vessel like on the Galaxy class? Sorry to leave you with questions but the factor in to what I would like to play...The Idea seems solid. I cant say I have played many online freeform games. I have played freeform live though.

Cold Heritage

I think those are good questions. They are fairly important elements that have not yet been determined.

For my part, I would vote for an Intrepid class sized vessel (that's what the USS Voyager was). It's a decently sized ship, we'd have approximately 160 crew members which would not include families of the crew.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Hephaestus

Not include...Does that mean that any family members would add more to that total. Or does not include mean that it wasnt designed to bring family members? I didnt know that the intrepid class was designed to do deep space survery like larger exploratory vessels?
Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.
~Peter Drucker~

Cold Heritage

I think it was not designed to bring family members. It's half the size of the Galaxy class USS Enterprise. And I can't find anything to say what the Intrepid class was specifically designed for on the wiki I'm reading, but since Voyager managed to do seven years in the Delta quadrant completely cut off from Federation support, it must be able to manage.

My suggestion is to base the game on a ship of that size, not necessarily a ship of that specific class.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

Brandon

Someone more well versed in Star trek can elaborate on the actual size of these ships but from playing STO the deep space science vessels that I remember are Destiny, oracle, trident, and nimbus. The ships are made to be self sufficient because they're usually pretty far away from star bases. I imagine that means they have facilities to manufacture their own parts, recycle materials, and run on renewable energy resources (or have the most effective power to outputs per energy unit).

I may change Tisha's holographic programming design to be the Chief Counselor if no one else is taking the job.  Whether she takes up more than that would be heavily dependent upon whether the entire ship is wired for holographic capability or not.

Is this guy okay?  I'd consider him a fun challenge to RP.

Name:  Dafed Rondon
Age:  30
Race: Zaldan
Role/Rank:  Executive Officer
Personality:     Dafed Rondon abhors dishonesty.  What other races consider common courtesy strikes him on a fundamental level as potentially aggressive obfuscation.
In spite of this fact, Rondon is open-minded to the point of being a confessed xenopheliac.  Women of many species have felt his admiring glances.  He is not hesitant to tell a woman what he finds attractive about them.  Unfortunately, his sense of honestly compels him to be equally frank about their blemishes.
He is direct man, with an honest smile and a harsh scowl.  Though dedicated to Starfleet ideals of peace and discovery, he enjoys physical confrontation as much as intellectual challenges.  He will happily tackle a disruptor wielding Jem Hadar and use him as a living shield against his fellow’s fire.
What Rondon misses the most about his homeworld is the ocean.

Background:  Despite what other people’s consider the Zaldan’s aggressive personalities, their worlds islands have some of the most beautiful beaches in Federation space.  With most industry taking place on artificial islands or undersea domes, the Zaldan homeworld has a small but thriving tourist industry.
Dafed was born to a family who worked in this industry.  As a young man, he was exposed as much to other cultures as to his own.  His first love was a feline woman of the Regulan people, and his second was an Andorian.
By seventeen he knew that—if for no other reason than his own xenophelia—he was destined for Star Fleet.  Coming of age, he took his second name—Rondon—in honor of Captain Rondon of the Federation Starship Ja’tor.  (Captain Rondon has recently retired from active service and taken a full time position at Starfleet Academy.)
Though dedicated to his schooling, Dafid Rondon worked throughout his teens taking tourists diving and snorkeling.  An avid swimmer among his people, he was known for holding his breath for 20 minutes at a time with minimal strain.
Graduating from the academy on the command track at age 23, Rondon is particularly skilled at space science and Starfleet Self defense.  Even when facing such physically formidable opponents as Gorn and Klingons, he prefers unarmed combat to phasers.  Indeed, he is a passing marksman at best.
Rondon entered the dominion war as a Lieutenant.  His tactical knowledge, intellect, and physical abilities were pushed to their limits.  He claims particular admiration for the Klingons and the Breen as adversaries, the Gem Hedar he calls ‘skilled and persistent but predictable.”  Romulans, with their particular skill at obfuscation, give him a headache.

Zaldans:  Abrasive, direct, and honest to a fault with their allies, Zaldans are not well versed in diplomacy.  They actually hire vulans to represent them in most galactic affairs.
However, Zaldans are taller, thicker, and stronger than the human norm.  They are also substantially more resilient—particularly against toxins.  They can handle near freezing temperatures with minimal discomfort and survive the vacuum of space twice as long as a human.
Recognizable by their webbed fingers and toes and a subtle nictating membrane, Zaldans are quite comfortable in salt water.  Spending 15 minutes at a time is normal for modern Zaldan.  Fossil records suggest their primordial ancestors could stay under water as long as a Teran dolphin.

Unless you guys want to be completely accurate to the world, then type of ship doesn't matter.

On that point, the Gamma Quadrant is not the quadrant to be waltzing into on an exploration ship thanks to it being the homebase of the Dominion. I cannot imagine the Dominion would pass up a chance for a little revenge by nuking a lone Federation ship. Remember, the Dominion was only beaten in the Alpha Quadrant. The Federation and its allies barely won that; they did not in anyway shape or form even come close to defeating the Dominion on its home turf.

The Delta Quadrant is also not the place for exploration either. Home of the Borg. The Beta Quadrant is really the only option.

That or you guys go in with a heavily armed flotilla of Federation/Klingon/Romulan warships and hope not to get owned.

I'd also agree on  putting this after DS9 would be a bad idea. it creates a problem for anyone wanting to start a character form any of the races in The Alpha Quadrant like  Betazoidas.

Im not trying to beat a dead horse here but explorer class vessels are always the largest class vessels a fleet can field. I dont see any problem with taking a single vessel into any quadrant as long as the primary mission objective is not war. I dont think setting the game after the dominion war in any way inhibits someone from playing the core federation races...like Betazoids. I like the later time periods because its more likely to give you any number of race options.

They weren't beaten, really - the Dominion surrendered to the Federation after Odo cured the female Changeling.

The game premise could be justified by the notion that Odo manages to moderate the Changelings' position regarding solids and to broker the sort of uneasy peace between the Federation and the Dominion that exists between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

They wouldn't. But Betazed fell to the Dominion in late 2474, was liberated in early 2475, and the war itself ended in 2475.

How many years after the Dominion War the game starts has not been established. There's nothing, really, set in stone, and the only reason that has to stop you from playing a Betazoid is if you choose to let it.

This may have already been answered, or it may be an issue that comes up with the various ships.  I don't honestly know, and I don't have severe technical knowledge of the genre.

Would the ship have full holographic capabilities?  As in, could a hologram exist anywhere on the ship, or only in specific areas?

I'll probably retweak Tisha to fit this concept.  I'm thinking Chief Counselor, but she can have an emergency security subroutine for if the ship gets boarded or something like that.  Other subroutines could be thrown in if we need specific roles as well.

Would the ship have full holographic capabilities?

It's not likely, as many ships omit holodecks entirely. There was only one ship that I know of - the prototype USS Prometheus - to have holo-emitters installed on a ship-wide scale as a standard feature.

Developments in Voyager towards the rights of holograms as people makes it seem, in my opinion, unlikely that the Federation would pursue holographic replacements for flesh and blood crewmembers.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

I'm not aware of any of those being assault cruisers, Brandon.  They're exploratory vessels.

Not from what I read on memory alpha. Any ship can be called an exploratory vessel, even escort ships which are designed for heavy firepower and speed. Going by STO, which doesnt always manage to fit everything where it should be but does an overall good job of cannon, the Sovereign class falls under the assault cruiser type of ships along with the majestic, noble, and imperial class ships. Assault cruisers are pretty big, ranging around 700 crew at peak capacity but they arent really made for deep space exploration just because of their larger size

There are some exploration cruisers including the galaxy, celestial, and envoy classes but using them would mean having to return to base a lot to restock on stuff.

I just think if were going to be focused on science and exploration a deep space science vessel would be more appropriate

Not sure if we have a mission yet, but if not, I want to throw in these objectives:

  • To explore strange new worlds

  • To seek out new life and new civilizations

  • To boldly go where no one has gone before

I may rephrase that last one a little as a split infinitive...

So this roleplay will revolve about an exploratory ship on a mission of discovery and scientific research in the Gamma Quadrant.

Thats about as much as we know for the ships mission so far. Its also why I suggested a deep space science vessel. If were going to focus on exploring and doing scientific research why not just go the full 9 yards and be a science ship designed for long range and lack of a starbase to constantly return to

We can still do that with a custom ship though

This being a Non Cannon, we really should flex our imaginative muscles a bit. So within the terms of what we agree upon, we define the ship, it's capabilities, even it's primary mission. For example, in the wake of the Dominion war, one of the things that could be suggested is that maybe Star Fleet wasn't just looking for  new civilizations. But perhaps people who were significantly advanced enough there could be an exchange of technology. There would also be ways to encourage commerce and trading, and so on. Being that Star Fleet has a duel role, both scientific and military. I wouldn't mind having the thread revolve around more military type missions.

Name: Mayleen Alenis

Age: 25

Race: half human-half Bajorin

Role/Rank: Star Fleet Intelligence/Operations Lieutenant Junior Grade

Personality: Mayleen is very serious about her work, doing it with preciseness and passion leading to perfect results all the time. Outside the work environment she's flirty and always shows her naughty side at leisure. Being the cousin of her boss didn't affect the way she works cause they were constant competitors since childhood. Always competing to determine which of them is the best.

Background: Born on the planet of Bajor she spent her childhood almost as an outsider because of her totally human form, lacking the distinctive characteristics of the Bajorin race led her to pair with the other human children, mainly whose parents worked for Starfleet. She first met her cousin Fuliar in a family reunion when she was 10, being fascinated with the boy they soon developed a friendship that turned into a competitive race as they both shared the same interest in school and the same ambition to work in Starfleet and be on a ship exploring the universe.

Name: Empola Largran
Age: 29
Race: Betaziod
Role/Rank: Specialist Empathic / Telepathic (perhaps negotiator aid?)
Personality:

Primarily Observant to the point of being deemed distant, this empath was chosen specifically due to her personality having an ability to disarm others typical tension relating to psychics or telepathics working along side others which dont share the ability.

The top of her class, Empola is naturally gifted even by Betaziod standards, this however seemed a curse initially as all felt that secret thoughts or personal thoughts would be something those of her talents could easily use to manipulate others subtlety or openly.

As it turned out Empola's ability to be able to be so tuned with her talents was her ability to be able to synchronize her personality to be inline with those she is near. Thus secret thoughts accessed to her typically only can be possible if she herself shares the same values or views on a topic. This also does take time, and deep readings something she has sworn not to perform unless at the Captains command.

When without an intention Empola is quiet literally "intentionless" and can be found standing still  or sitting still for hours on end without moving, typically staring at the stars. Times she is asked to explain what she is doing is never a surprise for she can "feel" new perspectives or awareness on her, and would often reply with something like

"Strange that meditation and traces give you knowledge of feelings over thoughts, seems that everything is feelings made manifest not reasons .. "

Background:

Empola is a star pupil of a new type of Psychics specifically designed to take up membership in positions of Starfleet.  She has been told the ship is apparently equipped with a protoype "PSY Fields module"  that apparently may be able to permit her to be able to be used as a component of a long range "feeling/thought" scanner, or a perhaps as part of a ship-wide shield defense against entities that may assault the ship with psychic means.

These new "PSY fields Modules' are very new, and high brass don't hold much faith in them working (none really do) Still the ship being the first to have one installed. And even if none hold confidence that they will work. Empola does hope she will be useful regardless for many a
negotiation has been aided by a Betaziods' suggestion to their captain.

I'm interested in this RP and here's a few ideas..personally I'd like to RP something that is post DS9 so as not to limit the advance of science and technology to what was utilized on the episodes. I think if the ship had DS9 as its home base/port and carried out exploratory missions in the undiscovered regions of the Gamma Quadrant then 'the sky is the limit' on what species and technology the crew discovers. The Dominion didn't rule over the entire Gamma Quadrant so there is plenty of space to explore and in doing so help the Federation gain a foothold in the Gamma Quadrant.

The Mission: I agree with the premise of an exploratory mission because it opens up all sorts of opportunities. What if the ship (and the crew by proxy) is tasked with a three year mission to explore the unknown reaches of the Gamma Quadrant? That leaves plenty of room for different plots while still staying on task.

The Ship: I like the idea of an Intrepid Class vessel. Plenty of room for families and crew. It can land on a planet. It's not necessarily a warship but it can defend itself well. And it has all the amenities a crew could wish for plus it could be upgraded fairly easily. Installing holo-projectors in the ship would be no problem at all for any Starfleet engineer worth his salt. The Voyager crew upgraded their ship as better technology became available, so we could do the same. As for a name, how about USS Endeavour. It would be named after the NASA space shuttle and the British HMS Endeavour, "the ship which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery (1768–1771). This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, rather than the American English."

As for my character, I'll get a bio knocked out either today or tomorrow and post it. I wouldn't mind being CO but I can RP Chief Security Officer just as easily.

Just a note to others so the "New generation" theme of the betaziod = negotiator theme is not imposed unduely

Please note:

Empola Largran = Telepathic/Empath (psychic) = NatalieB character
Gillian Loeb = Diplomat / Mediator = my character

I didn't expect to conflict but mainly act in unison.

The diplomat has much more thorough understanding of what actions have political consequences in the long run
the telepathy (my character) has good "feel" for consequences that occur with short term actions, my character
would know without much background on what strangers value (generally) want (now), threatened state, confidence etc.

The diplomat would be more strategic (long term = her char ) over tactical (short term = my character) also her character
outranks mine (mine is a consultant beckoned at the wim of true ranked characters) in spades so it would be likely the diplomat would request my characters services or just use them and not explain her findings to my character (where my character by rank would need to explain her findings to Neebs)

Both I read have a very different lean and I hope others don't see a role-overlapping.
It is likely for the "all things unknown" my character is more useful but when more and more things are known, the diplomat becomes more relevant all other things beings being equal.

So intial contact my character could be at the bridge (Diana troy-like) but not really needed for strategy or war counsils (ie dealing with many people with an intention and cabability that is known)

Love the idea of the ship being a first attempt at having a "psychic" defense or "sensors" (not attacking) and it being poor / confusing or mainly useless in its reliability but useful for plot sake - more to give it a go than to rely on it (thus new type of ship / different shape / engineering etc) and deep space / exploration focus.

If the ship we in have these "psy extender field modules" i dont expect my char to be controlling their output or what they do only be in a trance that is connected to it as a component ( Ie a seat that has her effectively sleeping while the field thing is used - and her other abilities are N/A, and she is not aware of its findings / what happens / no recall after its use (ie she can't use the "field module" to apply her will in anything as doing so makes her a user - and she cant be that if she also has to be a component for it working in the first place.

I was thinking it would be more interstign if it was mainly useful as "sensors" for super deep space. Places that has too much "traffic" just overwhelms readouts, its only good when one is truely in VERY very deep space as it can "hear echos" of a kind that can reach so far, which other activity sources of civilization wouldn't stand out at such a distance.

Perhaps the ship has to be otherwise turned off or everyone else in a drug induced sleep or something for anything to work = ie still experimental / too particular in its conditions to work for it to be really that powerful or only really useful in novelty times.

Anyway dont really care about the field modules having to be part of the ship or not, just loved the idea of this character being a significally more powerful by dreamy/new age/ star hippy version of Diana troy.

What if we got a hold of some of the same technology they used on voyager. If my timeline is correct, Voyager showed up sometime after the end of the Dominion war. A couple of years at least. And Star Fleet was experimenting with a couple of different vessels that could at least give the EMH's a wider range of mobility. I personally think we have a bit to play around with here, but that's just me.

AndyZ,

Concerning Trish as a holographic character.

I dont think anyone is fully against a holographic character existing, but if she has a "ferengi" lean as far as her capabilities go, it wouldn't make sense for her to be a protagonist. She may exist within memory but why ?

Waistressing etc ... there really isnt much need with replicators other than novel / antique effect.

Pleasure-girl ? I don't think there is anythign wrong with anyone using the holo-deck for sex, but I just can't see it being a protagonist. If the captain thought "hmm sort of need a holographic character being more versatile" I don't thin they would start with "lets choose the sexiest one and slowly up her subroutines to cater for medical stuff. They would choose a medical expert one (that has a perspective that is focused on an intention (keep all alive) and increase their capabilities to be able to be non-localised (ie can someone ELSE bring some portable generator if they are needed on away missions.

If the ship primarily is "luxury cruise for the super rich + exploration as a secondary thing ... yes I can see Trish being feasibly. If however its "we are going into danger / need to be prepared for anything ... the prime holo-characters just would be different.

I dont think anyone cares if someone plays some sexy character that everyone wants to bed (say someone that ran the mess hall etc), I just can't see that character being the holographic one - as a protagonist.

I may be wrong but i think that is where your getting your resistance.

Name: Angelo De Rica – played by Brandon
Age: 24

Over his 7 years in star fleet Antonio had earned some of the greatest medals an enlisted man could. Everything about his file said he was an overachiever and a hero so he became a hot commodity around the fleet.

Name:  Dafed Rondon – played by Muse

Name: Kate Greylin – played by Scribbles
Age: 24
Race: Human
Role/Rank: Chief Security Officer/Lieutenant Commander
Personality:
Kate is a creature of whim, driven by a dangerous blend of passion, self-indulgence and curiosity rather than any understanding of rank or cause and effect. It’s a persona that would normally have her kicked off most ships but one which she hides under a practiced façade, a guise which exudes control and a willingness to listen even if the exact opposite is true.
Background:
Kate’s file is littered with suspect but glowing recommendations, all from highly respected officers, as well as an admirable history which details her hand-to-hand expertise, skill with a rifle and her long line of serving family members. What her file omits however is the peculiar string of intermittent reassignments as well as the “Psychology Report” which normally adorns each personnel document. Those who question Kate on the missing bits and pieces usually meet a brick wall as the lieutenant commander finds little pride in divulging the extent of her father’s meddling, an admiral within Starfleet.

Greylin’s latest posting was as an instructor in the Starfleet Academy where she taught a variety of martial arts from the physical, such as Tai Kwon Do, to the healing arts, such as yoga. This training was meant to assist officers with hand-to-hand, arrests, etc, as well as help them achieve a sense of balance and calm while under duress. Unfortunately, Kate’s disregard for protocol, lack of respect for other instructors and several instances of misconduct inevitably resulted in her dismissal from the academy. Since then Kate has been transferred aboard her first vessel.

Background: Lana was born and raised in San Francisco. Her father was a doctor, her mother was in the military. She took an interest in both of her parents trades, but dreams of exploring the galaxy made her sign up for Starfleet. After serving on a Starfleet Heavy Cruiser during the Dominion Wars, she applied for the position of Chief Tactical Officer on the mission into the Gamma Quadrant. Thanks to her experience in the wars, she was considered for and eventually awarded with the commission.

AndyZ, I don't see a problem with your original idea. Like CAO said, if the timeline falls after Voyager returns then Starfleet will have the tech that allows your character to move freely on the ship and off. Voyager's EMH had a portable holo-projector where he could even go on away team missions, sort of like EDI from ME3.

In fact, if you're up for it I could see your character playing a role similar to EDI's where she is an avatar of the ship's computer and thus can move about the ship at will providing assistance where it's needed or can work within the ship's mainframe and security as an AI. This role would have quite a bit more freedom than the EMH.

Otherwise, the EMH role or that of a hostess would be possible. The bigger class of ships always have a lounge (Ten Forward) where the crew can relax and the newer ships always have an EMH. Personally I like the background story you created, I think it would lead to some interesting interaction between the crew.

RedEve

The one "issue" I had with that concept was the question if Starfleet would outfit one of their ships with an AI/Hologram that was procured someplace else as opposed to custom made for the vessel...

That I don't know. Probably not. But what if it was done by a programmer without Starfleet's knowledge? Some of the tech aboard the ships are designed by civilian teams, like the warp drive. What if one or a couple of these people were less than scrupulous and decided to use an existing holograph rather than create a new program? It could be something that the crew discovers later on when the hologram suddenly 'loses her clothes' during a crucial event.

CAO

It could always be a combination of programs, at least in cannon Star Trek no one has ever adequately explained how these holograms gain their sentience. Even Moriarty from the next generation has not been explained in an adequate manner. It supposedly all came down to a few choice wordings, well if that's the case you could do that for any Hologram and give them a kind of life.

AndyZ

If we're okay with my char having a mobile emitter, I can fix everything else up pretty easily.  Her original program will be an Auxillary Security Hologram, basically a redshirt that can follow on an away mission instead of sending a living person who may be killed.  Holograms would be much easier to retrieve safely.  From there, someone tinkered with her program on the holodeck during private hours.

I'll write it up within a day or two.

Love everything so far.

As far as the trish character gores ? Happy to role play with her with one condtiion
her MAIN reason to exist in the first place was for something non "sex focused"
ie her prime picture / skills are what an officer that is in "oh serious fuck mode" I need help

... would (drum roll) want to hope help from (ie non-luxury)

If "ferengi" subroutines start being releavent later = that is ok  ... dont mind (stranger things happens right ?)

If you have a pic and write her up as "X = non-sex = primary releance" = Good.
Secondary stuff ... happens.

It always does.

The first 'too human' hologram was Minuet(sp?).  The Binars designed her to distract Riker.  When the computer was reasinged to devote less RAM to her matrix, she reverted to a normal hologram.
When the computer was given the directive to create an opponent 'able to defeat Data', it rerouted RAM from the entire ship to do so.  Later, his matrix was transfered to a dedicated server with enough processing power to emulate a life time's worth of galaxy.
The Doctor from Voyager almost lost his personality when he expanded beyond the processing power dedicated to his matrix.
The common thread seems to be that a 'too human' hologram requires substantially more processing capacity than a normal hologram.
May I suggest that someone on the senior staff--I'll volunteer myself though it's not necessary--decided that Andy's hollogram was too human to be permitted to remain as property, acquired her dedicated server from the Ferangi, and then offered her a emancipation under the same legislation that grants Data control of his own destiny?
Having her actually be a suitcase sized dedicated server rather than a free floating data matrix might limit her to rolls like ten forwards waitress and medical volunteer, but it means she can detach from this ships holographic enviorments and be transfered to another environment able to accommodate her.

That seems more sensible.

Hologram that is very real / independant etc existing as something that another on the ship smuggled aboard for novelty sake somehow - to me is ok (may have to check with red about it tho)

Hephaestus

I have finally came up with a concept...I would like to play a Waste Reclamation/Replicator Specialist named Jacob Carpenter.

Name: Jacob Carpenter
Age: 28
Height: 6'0
Weight: 180lbs
Ship Role(Occupation): Waste Reclamation/Replicator Specialist
Appearance: Attractive in a very comfortable way. Good Smile.
Personality: Jacob is a team player. Level headed and friendly.
Sexual Preference: Homosexual. I would prefer a steamy kiss and then fade to black, but romance would be nice if it happens.

Background: He grew up on a large civilian freighter where his single mother served as a nurse. He enlisted in federation service as a technical specialist when he was 18 and has served on two ships before his current posting. He is rated to be on a fairly diverse spectrum of repair/maintenance task but his true talent lies in waste management and replication.

Roleplaying Notes: I dont know how technician ranks in enlisted personnel work but he has naturally moved out of the green status over the last ten years and has more responsibility and respect. He does good work even if its not the most glamorous position. Some of the concepts I have heard presented are a bit over the top...I wanted to play someone a little bit more down to earth and dependable if its all the same to you guys.
Hes been in battle scenarios before but he doesnt have more then basic proficiency and a level head. Feel free to throw him out of his comfort zone.
Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work.

Welcome and just a thought but I think he'd still fall under the engineering or Opps segment of the ship's personnel.

Muse

Well, the dedicated server isn't a holloprojector in and of itself.  When it's on the ship, she can project into any holo-capable portion of the ship, but her ability to go other places would be limited by transmission speed.

Say, her server is sits in 10 forward behind the bar.  It ties into the ships computer wireless--without taking up any meaningful amount of the ship's RAM.  Then the ship projects her where she wants to go.  (So long as she's authorized, and there's holoprojectors.)

Because she has a bigger dedicated server than she needs just to be an entertainment holo, she's able to add things to her program like the database necessary to be an EMH or what have you.  That probably took some time and programmer effort originally.  :)

She could also be invited to project to the top of someone's table--though those holograms are just visual.

Not to shift from the subject of holograms but I wanted to share an idea...

I was wondering if the Chiefs could be placed in charge of their relevant NPCs. It might help make the RP a little more autonomous, add a bit more function to the position of Chief as well as add a touch of individuality/depth to the ship as a whole.

In other words, the Chief Medical Officer is responsible for RP'ing/describing their own nurses, assistants, etc, while the Tactical Officer controls any away-mission/boarding-crew NPCs.

Also, the Captain can fill in for any NPC bridge crew or if a Chief disappears then the Captain can temporarily control the needed area, or the Second in Command if the Captain is gone. And if both the Captain and Second-in-Command are gone, then the GM can take over.

Scribbles, I like that idea. Most of the Star Trek RPs I have written on have used that method and it works really well. In fact, maybe at some point each of the chiefs can make a small list with the NPCs in their department and their functions. That way we could establish continuity by referencing some of the same NPCs in our posts. I just know I'm going to have to create a standing NPC for CONN (Chief Helm), no one ever wants to write that position.

For those of you who have chosen job specific positions for your characters, you may want to rethink your choice because by making them job specific you're limiting your character to certain situations. For instance, I can't remember any away team ever having a replicator specialist, but there might have been an engineer on the team whose speciality was working with replicators. I guess what I'm saying is choose a position that gives your character plenty of flexability, so you won't get bored.

AndyZ

I'll start with a simplified version so that adjustments can be made.  People have already posted all kinds of stuff about this and I'm behind.

Name: Tisha
Age: 8 months
Race: Hologram
Role/Rank: Auxillary Security Hologram
Personality: Focused and driven, cool and logical but with a somewhat serene sense about her that is difficult to define.
Background:

Tisha was originally designed as an Auxillary Security Hologram.  After Voyager returned and the mobile emitter was codified, the Federation would be able to stop the flagrant loss of life by anyone wearing a red shirt through the simple process of sending a hologram instead.  Such holograms' phasers would by default only work at the Stun setting, but a command from a superior officer would allow them to switch to Full Effect.  The only true way to disable the A.S.H. is to destroy the mobile emitter, and the ship's computer retains all information about the hologram.  More emitters can always be made, even if human life is not so easily replaced.

Not everyone liked the models, but one woman, an Admiral Hackinsworth, developed a passing fondness for her bodyguard.  During her spare time in the holodeck, she wrote up a number of additions to the program, naming her Tisha and spending a lot of time at the beach.  Although her high rank did not allow her many friends or lovers, her own companion made the tedium of Starfleet more bearable.

Although life and self-awareness are still tricky posits even in the 24th century, Tisha's "awakening" seemed to occur during Admiral Hackinsworth's assassination.  Mistaking Tisha's shock and panic for a malfunction, she was shut down until Starfleet could take a better look to see what had occurred, and they pieced together the Admiral's secret.

Tisha has since been accorded the status of a sentient lifeform, and has expressed interest in continuing her aid to Starfleet.  She has no interest in questions about the soul and similar metaphysical concepts, believing that she's not qualified of solving them and that they're a waste of processing power.  A notable portion of her cognizance is often placed upon Admiral Hackinsworth, though it has never distracted her in her duties and she rarely takes on any acts similar to human mourning.  Much of her capacity still seems to be growing, sending her on a route of self-discovery which may lead her anywhere.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

I don't have netflix :( but i would be interested in doing some homework to learn about it. though...it may not be in time to play the game. I am looking for a fun game but playign a character in startrek would be fun because everyone in it seems so reasonable and human.

AndyZ

Well, humans would be easiest, for obvious reasons.  Children aren't allowed since the minimum age is 16 (since a lot of the games on E will end up sexual at some point, and can't have minors for that).

One of the listed suggested roles is a civilian attached to the mission.  That means that your knowledge of space and Starfleet could be lacking, but your character could have lots of knowledge about some other subject, which you as a player would be able to fake.

Playing a human from the 20th or 21st century who got displaced in time and ended up put down on the ship would be a bit cliche but possible, if you really don't feel confident doing anything else.

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Portal:Main has an inordinate amount of information, although it's very apt to contain spoilers with little warning.

I hope that helps some, so you can think a bit and maybe have an idea what you'd like to play.

it would also be conceivable to play some one from the time but who came from one end of the dedication spectrum. IE, maybe a nerd who researched so hard into her favorite subject that she forsook all knowledge of anything else useful. Sort of how sheldon in big bang theory is. I could picture a book worm so wrapped up in some vague piece of science that she didn't learn much about starfleet, and space in general... or she's so much of a savant that less important matters escape her notice (easy to roleplay in that i can read up on one aspect of the setting and learn more as i become more "normal").

easy option 2, some one who was so un-dedicated that she just slacked through life! maybe she's the daughter of some super important political figure or officer some where else. This figure put their foot down and said "you're joining starfleet" and did some political wrangling to make it happen. Now she's got no choice but to try to do a good job instead of slacking! This character also didn't learn much about star fleet. maybe even goes through the motions of knowing but is kind of gliding on parental esteem and bluffing ability. Maybe she cheated her way through the screening process and is supposed to be a literal genius at her chosen field (chosen because it sounded easy) and has to deal with either shaping up, or making an ever more convoluted string of lies :)

all that being said, I can understand if you don't want a star trek novice mucking up your game too! that would be okay since I'm all new anyway!

AndyZ

I'm not actually running this, so I'll pause here and let one of the people who is step in and answer.  It sounds like you have the start of an idea, though.

Star trek 101

THe federation

Star fleet is a space-naval and police force for the "Federation" => A collaboration of rules / ettique / trade that many worlds join and generally act as a policing force where possible and take the high horse ethical position historically (Thus an incentive for others to join the "federation"). One of star fleets main roles is to represent / ambassador "the federation" to new cultures, try and get them to join if possible, if not exchange of culture, if not trade .. if all those our out of the question peace agreements.

technologically

Star trek ships shoot things with "Photon torpedos (missiles)" and lasers (that make a sound in space ... really weird). They have "transporters" that beam people to different locations - disappear and appear in a flash of light (not many have this technology). They have holograms that are effectively real - hard etc - for plaes that are configured for it. "Replicators" exist for non-super large stuff. If you want a coffee you to to the replicator and say "Short black" and it "teleports" one.. when your done with it you put it back there and it recycles the energy (flash of light its gone). No cleaning bots needed => Makes bedrooms minimalistic. You have tables, chairs bedrooms, covers .. any anything else you replicate as u deem fit.

An "away team" is a group of people typically 6 or less that "teleports" / beams to a place outside the ship. Typical equipment would be a "tri-quarter" that is a device about the size of two apple iphones hinged at their top, that effectively is an "all things scanner and scensor in one" - what you can work out with one is effectively the limits of your imagination of what the future may have in say 100 yrs (how stable things are tectonically, health of plants, people, quality of air .. you name it)

"Phasors" are ray guns the size of pistols that have many settings typically two settings "stun and kill". Any starfleet wearing a uniform also has a "com bage" that is a gold shield like broach that when pressed can let you communicate with anyone else that has one within the distance of perhaps a solar system. Touch one then say "Captain we are in trouble permission to run like ... "
Captain hears it from their com-bage then presses it and says "No chance you sacrificial lambs, always hated you all ... go to hell and die" (or whatever)

Times a teleporter doesnt work for whatever reason they have shuttles or "run-abouts" (effectively life-pods on speed.

All ships other than super unique exotic stuff travels faster than light using something claled "warp engines". Warp 1 is "slow warp" (still super fast). Warp 10 is the theoretical maximum warp technology can push something. So hearing "we are going at "warp 9 Captain" means likely the ship is moving as fast as possible.

Power typically is due to antimatter-matter engines (I think). Most ships (all of star fleet) have "shields and deflectors" these are like invisible bubbles that wrap the ship and cover the ship in a protective layer of something. That takes a lot of punishment before being breached.

They also have "force field technology" so a space may be covered in something invisible that prevents things moving through it. Star-bases / moonbases exist and are pretty impressive in their own regard, have their own shields, defenses etc. "Universal Translator" software for com badges effectively makes everything speak Engish. The ships computer can be conacted by com badges or just being on board, one talks to it as a person "computer do this you lazy fk" ...

"Hull breach" means that the ships external hull has got a whole. "Bulkhead" is a section between pars of the ship that can seal off an entire section. "Gefforys tube" is crawl ducts between sections within a ship.

Races and culture

There are some telepathic races (they are rare). Vulcans and Romuns looked like pointy eared lithe elvish people both really smart. Vulcans epitomize logic above emotions, Romuans believe in passion => Insights and incentive. Romans and Vulcans used to be close now "passive war" (hate each other). Vulcans are part of Star fleet, Romuans are their own empire. Klingons are a war-ready race very proud, love fighting. Not as advanced as star fleet but impressive in their own right.

Cardassians are like klingons. Vulcans and Humans make up the bulk of the Federation, the former being technically, and mentally and (well most regards) superier to the humans. The Vulcans have their own fleet / interests (humans dont). The vulcans are not expansionist (mainly spiritual). They often say good bye to each other by holding their hands out openly in a "V pattern" saying "live long and prosper". If the Vulcans leaved the federation or turned against them that would probably the worst news the federation could hear of.

Ferengi are small dudes with large ears that are obsessed with sex with different races and profit. They are traders, and will sell their mother for a profit in a heart beat. Theyare not evil, just very selfish. Currency has been eliminated from the federation. Think of communism that works (ie ideal communism). This is one of the core reasons the Ferengi and the Federation dont have much to do with each other. The federation does organise trade internally and externally, its not for profit of any inidividuals though - typically is organising "luxury item from X distributed to All, X gets what they want that they dont have". So sometimes Federation will trade with the ferengi, but on bulk as a race (not to individuals typically, doing so prevents corruption etc).

The borg (cybernetically enchanged group) is more a machine consciousness that is distrubited among many cyborgs. They have enormous ships of simple geometrical shapes. They can "adapt" very quickly .. so if you start shooting one with X ... after u kill Y of them they next flood are suddently immune. They go around saying "Prepare to be assimulated - Resistance is futile. Your distinctinveness will be added to our own." this is effectively their way of saying "We have these nano-machines that exist in these extendable tubes that come out of our hands which if injected into anything organic makes htem start sprouting machine parts internalyl and externally and turns you into one of us. Doing that is the only thing we are interested in... accept this or we will blow you up." Its their way of saying "hi/Bye/Welcome/Fuckyou/Thinkingofyou/Dontcare/Heretokillyou/Change you" all at the same time (their only real comment they are interested in saying). as a "Collective. which is what they call their "culture"). They are enormously powerful. Everything they are and learn of they give numerical names to only called "designations". But some entities like "the Q" (a dying race of Godlike beings), "Species XZ3109"(A borg "designation" ?? An exotic species that is insane, they live if fluidic space (parallels to normal space), and have ships that are organic and about as good as anything every seen and more some. Borg entered fluidic space and started to piss them off, they returned the favour in spades before the "fluidic space / normal space" portal (which the borg made) was destroyed. It was the only time the Borg had a decisive loss. The only time in history that they negotiated with another race in terms other than "Be assimulated by us or die" (ie to save their buts from certain destruction only) None know much about them. None likely will.) things more powerful than the borg exist ... just thankfully more rare. But the borg increase in power and capabilities at a rate faster than anything else (which scares the hell out of everyone).

Klingon and Vulcan ships have cloaking devices (making them invisible) Star fleet refuses to use the technology on principal, and in war-peace-agreement practice  (but may experiment with forbidden tech in secret).

Betaziods (empaths), Bajorians (used to be a slave race to the Cardassians) and many other minor races exist but still may be exotically powerful in their own regard ( one of them can make ships that can have technology that manipulates time etc ... this is something the federation are not happy about AT all.).

Although many cross-racial love affairs exist, children produced from such couplings are unheard of. You never see a "Klingon Vulcan" or a "Human-kingon". Even though they are called different "races" all are in practice different species (figures)

Unique "Creatures" also exist "Data" being one of a few androids.

Space in general

New races are discovered all the time.

Races are not evenly distrubuted throughout the galaxy. IF you can imagine the galaxy as a cartwheel sliced up as a pie would be each "Quater" is a quadrant". Alpha quadrant (where humanity / earth is + Vulcans, romulans, kingons ... I think a few othes. Beta, Delta and Gamma.

Only the Alpha quadrant is really known plus some snippets of the Delta Quadrant (due to a freak occurrence where a ship called the voyager was flung). Bajorians, Cardassians and others exist in the Delta quadrant. Starfleet has one or two star bases in the Delta quadrant but its presense is very very minimalistic.

Behavior and Attire

All star fleet wear skin tight jump suits. Black bottoms / boots. Different colored tops mean different things. Yellow is engineering ... Blue is medical .. red security etc ... they always get killed). Im not sure of the colours but others would.

Any time you are warned your about to go to a hostile planet (raining firely rocks) it is an unspoken rule that you CANT ask to wear armor or bring more equipment before you do down there. Why ? it results in an instant court-marshal It just doesn't look sexy, They dont like carrying stuff nor like robots or jeeps that do (prefer to beam stuff from the ship on a per need basis). Only time I have ever seen them wear anything over their uniform is if they are walking on the outside of a ship (in space) for whatever reason.

Now your an expert :)

Actually although I used swear words above,
I can't recall ANYONE EVER saying a swear word OR shouting.

Not

There is one thing I want to correct, and that is the the statment that said

QuoteVulcans and Humans make up the bulk of the Federation,

While on television and movies, for the sake of ease and appearance, all aleians are "humanoid" in appearance. You know, basics, two hands, two eyes, two hands with five fingers (usually), two legs. Almost all are mammal, in that they have hair and presumably give birth to live young. So in the scenes the most common characters are usually humans and Vulcan, but sometimes you get others too. I think that ends up leading to the misconception that Humans and Vulcans make up the most of the Federation and Star Fleet.

To extrapolate from a real life example, Star Fleet could look a bit like NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), now there are some significant differences but there would be one important similarity.  With over 150 worlds or more in the federation, and with hundreds of thousands of sentient species, humans would in reality make up a small portion of the Federation and Star Fleet. But basicly each country has a region or area that they patrol and look out for in the common defense of the NATO members. In addition to this, while there are military exchange programs, even on those ships or bases. The primary people on them and that serve in the military are those people of the country the base is built in. The only exception being specifically American Military bases in other countries.

Depending upon the region of the federation a ship served in, in one area you might see more Andorians or Denobulans, and in another area you might see more Trill, with a smaller assortment of various species also serving on those ships. The majority species on a ship would really be due to region, and the percentage of that population that chooses a life of military service. Also Star Fleet Academy would not be the only military school that one trains at, though it's like West Point in the United States. It's the flagship school of Star Fleet. There would be an assortment of other military schools on other planets.

I say this for two reasons, number one, we should let our imaginations flow and number two. Even for me, I find sometimes I can get stuck in what we get shown on television. I personally just think the actual reality of such a place and culture would in some ways reflect a more currently modern approach.

Just a few short notes.

Starfleet - all one word folks.
Photon torpedos are old news, all ships have quantum torpedoes now.
Tricorder - a Fleeter's multi-purpose instrument for scanning any number of things.
Phasers - personal hand-held weapons and also ship weapons.
Commbadge - the Starfleet version is the insignia on the front left side of their uniform. It serves a dual purpose as a communication device and a translation device.
'Red Shirts' - Cannon fodder. In TOS the extras with the red uniforms (security) always bought the farm. In the newer series red is synonymus with Command and Helm. Security, like Engineering, is yellow. Teal/Blue is Medical and Science. Tactical can be red or gold depending on the CO's preference.

I think it needs to be stressed that this was supposed to be a non-canon game. i realize a lot of people really get into the star trek info but if the game goes down that road Im going to get really turned off from it.

Dont fear, as far as i know it is a non-cannon game (my summary was not for the thread just a one page recall of all things star trek that I recall) , that summary stuff was for terminology only.

Its interesting enough for any fraction to be relevant.

Alright, its just that Ive seen fans start to snipe eachother because of lack of knowledge in something entirely vague and meaningless like Andorian dinner ettiquette. It just made the game completely unfun and I want to avoid that at all costs

It's a great capsule, Kate, easy to read and insightful.  The big thing you missed:

Cross species kids actually do happen.  Mr. Spock from the original series was half human, half vulcan.
In The Next Generation, Mr. Worf: a klingon raised by humans, had a love interest who was half kingon, half human, and they had a basically Klingon child, Alexander.
Another Half Human, Half Klingon shows up in Voyager: Be'elana Tores.
A Klingon planet occupied by Romulans was cut off from the Romulan empire for a generation or two, and a whole generation of hybrids resulted.  There's also at least one Cardasian/Bajoran hybrid resulting of from the Cardasian occupation of Bajor.

That's probably a bit much information for a capsule introduction.  It does seem relatively easy to for hybrid children to happen, and be fertile themselves.

That said, contraception in Star Trek is a monthly shot.  It's 100% effective if both parties have it, less so if only one.

Genevieve, welcome to Elliquiy.  New games are cropping up all the time, a lot of them free form and based on a fandom.  If you'd like to apply to this one, Red Eve hasn't cut off the applications yet.  : )  She does have a big list of those she's received (accepted?) back a page or so.

Aribeth, the only medical character we have is Brandon's genius.  I don't know how someone who was a doctor at 16 managed to join the fleet as a medical technician instead of a doctor, but we don't have a chief medical officer.

Personally it doesn't matter to me if people don't know how to write a Star Trek character, I'd rather see people write a character in a Star Trek setting and have fun than knowing all the minutiae of the series. Having said that one would expect people to have some general knowledge of Star Trek and be open to learning more if participating in a Star Trek RP.

And if one's intent is to use an idea or object that is already established, then out of respect for the creators, one should at least spell the invention/idea correctly and be familiar with its general purpose. This has nothing to do with it being canon or non-canon, however it has everything to do with becomg a better writer.

CAO

Agreed on the last point entirely. The things we do take from the series should be role played for their intended purposes. Even as a Non-Canon thread, it'll provide continuity to the subject matter. Has anyone been working on any kind of a plot?

can i pick / post a few that just look cool ? and you choose red ?

what may be sensbile is

a) Battleship less efficent but it has redundancy, ie if you loose your engines, you have another set and dont have to wait yrs for help if others cant get there). Ie good choose for space that is resource rich.
b) explorer class may be sensible as it has everything to be set to be super efficent (in case your in places resources for repairs are few and far between). Ie good choice for space that is resource poor.

But Im not a treky enough to know specific ship models, also you could make one up if its set in the future of any series.

CAO

I've been thinking about this for a while, and one of the things that occurred to me is that in the series they never used any "air craft carrier" type space ships in the fleet. In Voyager one of the characters created something called the Delta Flyer which was akin to modern fighter jets, what if we a ship, that was for Startleet experimental in design, but going back to the idea of Aire Craft carriers and had a crew of fighter pilots on board.

AribethAmkiir

Would that blur the lines too much with Battlestar, though?

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a picture of a female Trill that wasn't Jadzia or Ezrie.  I was told there was a sight, once upon a time, where you could add the spots to pictures.  Anyone know of that?

CAO

I personally don't think it would, the idea is that they would just be re developing or reusing an old idea and fitting it for space. At it's core, it's still inherently Star Trek.

That wouldn't really fit into the theme of exploration, imho. A ship like that would fit more naturally into a story set during a war.

Angel Fire

Hi there!  I just found this yesterday and i was wondering if there was a spot for a Counselor?  I have a Counselor character that I tried to play out here on E (once again...reasons behind that I will explain later) but unfortunately the story died for many reasons.

Anyhew, as far as a ship suggestion, I would say that it depends on how far out after DS9 everyone wishes for this to be set.  If it is around the "ST: Nemesis" era, than I would say a Sovereign class would be perfect... if you are looking way out in the future (say 25th Century), than an Odyssey class (depicted in "Star Trek Online") would work.

Well that's kind of the irony of  Star Trek, it's a blend of both military and exploration. I don't see why It can't be both. But at this point I would say we need to start shaping consensus on an actual direction. The best way is probably to decide our mission first, then choose a ship, then whatever else needs to be decided to start the thread.

AndyZ

As a suggestion, perhaps we were a military vessel originally with orders to explore if we end up too far away from Federation space, and we got knocked into a wormhole by some sort of experimental new weapon on the other side?

Starfleet ships ARE military vessels no matter what.... which is why all of the crew has military ranks.  Think of Starfleet ships as the Navy but in Outer Space.

I am thinking that Exploration is their primary mission anyways but if a battle comes, than they are under orders to help out in the fight.  The Borg battles and the Dominion War are very good prime examples of what I am talking about.

Ok,

The problem is that ships are romantic and facinating so many have strong views.

Red - you can't go wrong, any ship is fine.

I think choose one that looks cool, the captain was assigned it by star fleet
(only one they thought suitable for the task, high brass was tight lipped on why saying
"Only you will find out later when the time comes, well we hope you will", leaving an air of mystery if you want it.)

I think guys the BEST way we can help Red get us all going, please the trekies and those just wanting to role play anything vaguely like this... is you post a few links to pics she chooses what "feels right" looks right "right feel" by shape alone ... call the ship a new type of class (even though it has some simularities to previous designs), say its experimental, and something about the ship being assigned to the task was secret, even above what the captain knows (which annoys the captain no end, as she feel all may be used for something that doesnt feel right, ie not all is rosy as we leave, the departing celebrations hushed / non-existant, the selection process stranger than other ships.).

Well thats my view. But red just choose one many of the trekies can link you pics, they all look amazing.

Here are some ... but there are many many many more.

CAO, the Akira Class ship has a whole deck dedicated as a flight deck with fighters and the whole shebang. It's the closest thing Star Trek has to an aircraft carrier.

I'm happy with any class of ship as long as it's not the Prometheus Class or its variant, the Haphaestus Class. Those ships have MVAM which split them into three sections. It's such a pain to write and keep everyone on the same page during Multi-Vector Assault Mode.

Angel Fire, RedEve requested that people PM her their character's bio. :)

AndyZ

There is one thing that I want to suggest for the ship.

One thing that I often notice in science fiction stuff like Star Trek is that the sickbay will invariably end up having problems, where something needs to be quarantined and contained.  That never goes right, and it ends up getting on the ship.

Would it be possible to have the sickbay set up as one big airlock, possibly with multiple sickbays across the ship so that one can be jettisoned if such an event actually does happen?

As per Red's permission:

Name: Azadi Telzan
Age: 29
Race: Trill (not joined)
Role/Rank: Chief Medical Officer

Appearance: Azadia is an extremely attractive woman of a tall (5'8") and athletic build.  Her warm, compassionate, blue-grey eyes are inviting and often her most complemented feature.  Dark sandy brown hair frames her face,is  often tucked behind her ears, and wrapped neatly into a bun at the nape of her neck.  Dimples form upon her cheeks when she smiles and her voice has a gentle, soothing tone that is most beneficial in her line of work.  When not in the blue Starfleet medical uniform, Azadia prefers loose, comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict her movement.

Personality: Azadia is confident, calm, compassionate, and intelligent.  She is easily approachable, has a great bedside manner, and puts her patients first.  Many of her patients have claimed that she has a very calming presence about her.  During down time, Azadia enjoys socializing with her crewmates and friends, appreciates receiving attention, and would like a romantic relationship if she ever had time.  She is content to not be a host to a symbiont, and has never shown any ambition to apply for the program.  She is dedicated to Starfleet and her current assignment.

Background: Born on Trill, Azadia always showed a compassionate, kind nature that often led her to go out of her way to help people and animals.  She is the youngest daughter to an older couple and enjoyed a fairly carefree childhood.  At a young age she began to show interest in holistic healing.  From that interest quickly followed a deeper fascination with medicine.

She received a standard education for her species and upon graduation, promptly applied and was accepted into Starfleet.  She attended the Starfleet Medical Academy.  There Azadia took advantage of every opportunity she had, and enrolled in engineering extension courses to supplement her medical training.  Ultimately, Azadia graduated as co-valedictorian of her class, a burr that still smarts.

Since her graduation from Star Fleet, Azadia has served on four different vessels, a research facility and a space station.

Pilots ?

Meh.

The ship knows what to do ..

AribethAmkiir

In TNG doesn't Data and Jordy (sp?) typical take the pilot seats, and aren't they technically "Science" officers?  What I'm getting at is couldn't you have some of the PCs fill those positions unless they're off the bridge for a reason?

Kate

your right, it probably is a good idea to have someone stearing the thing during sensitive times.

but they dont have to always be there, i think that several would know how
(ie dont have to a a super specialist to be able to get the thing to move)

TyKing

IN the early TNG episodes Geordi would take the CONN(Helm) and Data was Chief Operations officer so he would be at the Operations console which was situated beside the Helm console at the front of the bridge. After Geordi's role became specifically engineer then they would have others at Helm, Ro Laren and Wesley Crusher to name a few. Helm is one of the most boring departments to write though, unless your character can get into flight in a big way.

But I think Muse meant fighter/shuttle pilots which the Akira Class would have due to the flight deck. I think a Flight Wing would be a great edition for character interaction. I'm onboard with the Akira Class.

Anyone have any ideas about a name?

:)  Seems Rondok would support the name Calypso.  (He's a diver, after all.)

From Wikipedia's article on the historical Calypso (originally a mine sweeper):

Jacques-Yves Cousteau's Calypso (1950–1997)

The Irish millionaire and former MP, Thomas "Loel" Guinness bought Calypso in 1950 and leased it to Cousteau for a symbolic one franc a year. He had two conditions, that Cousteau never ask him for money and that he never reveal his identity, which only came out after Cousteau's death. Cousteau restructured and transformed it into an expedition vessel and support base for diving, filming and oceanographic research.
Calypso carried advanced equipment, including one- and two-man mini submarines developed by Cousteau, diving saucers, and underwater scooters. The ship was also fitted with a see-through "nose", an observation chamber three meters below the waterline, and was modified to house scientific equipment and a helicopter pad. The Calypso underwater camera is named after this ship.

I'm fairly indifferent.  To me a name right now isn't as important as it will be after we've begun to create the story that surrounds the ship.

Calypso sounds pretty though.

CAO

I'm still on board with the USS Red River, but looks like opinion is against me on this one.. As for the suggestion of runabouts, they would not make good fighter craft. A fighter craft has to be agile and moble, quick and stealthy. Some principals will likely always remain the same, my suggestion is that they be a spin off of the delta flyer that Tom Paris built in Voyager. A second or third generation delta flyer I don't think would be out of the question. I am on board with the names though, sounds good.

A Delta Flyer is too large to be used as a fighter. Delta Flyers are faster, more heavily armored shuttles. I think we could have one of them but for a flight wing we'd need something smaller. There's two or three choices for Star Trek fighters on the web. Here's a Raven Class fighter.

Specs:
Type: Long Range Interceptor
Overall Length: 16.75 meters
Overall Beam: 10.75 meters
Overall Draft: 3.9 meters
Crew: 1 Pilot

Propulsion
Engagement Speeds: .75c
Atmospheric Cruise: Mach 7
Atmospheric Max: Mach 14
Normal Warp Cruise: Warp 4
Maximum Warp: Warp 8

Defensive Systems
Phasers: 2 Type X (1 arc, aft, fore)
Pulse Phaser Cannons: 2
Micro torpedo launcher: 1

Shields and Armor
Armor: Ablative, Crystalline Hybrid Hull
Primary Shielding; Multiadaptive Shields
Special: Interphase Cloaking System

CAO

I'm sorry I thought the delta flyers were smaller than that and more agile. But if the raven will do a better job, I'm all for it. I still advocate for like a next generation type of craft. Perhaps something that allows maneuverability at better speeds, or even the adaption of cloaking technology for the element of surprise.

Kate

OK

ship name ? => Don't care. As long as it isnt the USS Enterprise, all good in my book

With the fighters vs shutters / which fighters ... guys really ? She did choose that is a "pseduo"
carrier of sorts ie has room for a few, is it ok if that is resolved in OOC later ?
(doesnt really have to be resoled before IC starts right ? we not starting IN the middle of a battle I hope :) )

Remember I am not even sure if the ship has the "psychic module" my character thinks the ship may have
(She could have been lied to / it may not be working. I have no idea of details about it. We can cross those bridges later I feel.)

I agree Im eager to get started. The assault shuttles or whatever they are can be figured out later, if they need to be figured out at all. I dont think we have a pilot for them so I dont think it matters either

Yeah that may be easiest, so your into thread can be minimalistic, a brief summary of the mission particulars, anything we have stumbled upon or experienced so far..

TyKing

CAO

I would agree with that, if they were on a 5 or 7 year mission and about 1 to 3 years into it, I think that is acceptable. It allows our characters to be a bit more flexible but we'll have to agree on some common events that occurred in the past. If we have the ship start off by leaving DS9 and enter into the Gamma Quadrant, then it leaves us less flexible, but the same result is ahcived, they've all had the same experience in terms of ship wide events.

@ Kate: Part of my char's profile is that he doubles as an intelligence officer. Perhaps it could be his job to oversee the construction and implementation of these emitters and to study how they'd react. Of course Star Fleet would also be interested in possible other uses and we'd have to wrestle with the ethical dilemmas of those choices. Because basically, they could be used improperly in terms of mind and even social control. If one could imagine having your thoughts scanned for "undesirable material"

Kate

CAO,

happy to have your character more aware of these experimental sensor arrays that use a strong empath / telepath as a component
(could be one main charge your captain gave you.) You need to confirm with Red though for that to be ok, (seems fine for me,
reasons for us to all talk to each other is better than us all going in different places in the ship having heaps of unrelated sub-plots).

Perhaps some weird highly fragile experimental probes the carrier deck can launch to extend these "sensor fields" or put up a "psi-shield" is something
your entrusted to take care of. Certainly warrants an intel officer on board.

I started the OOC and IC threads, since you were all so eager to get started.

The IC intro post is pretty basic.

Are you still accepting new members? I would be very interested in playing a young changeling Starfleet graduate that is very good at changing into humanoid forms, but doesn't know how to change into anything else. Would love to serve as the Anthropology and Archeology Officer. On the bridge I can sit at one of the science terminals and I can join away teams to help them understand new cultures. Would be an expert on cultural development and practices.

Let me know if this is acceptable and I will come up with a fairly badass character.

By the way I am assuming this is set just after the ending of Deep Space 9.

may need a captain ... (my candidate character)

Name: Vanessa Grhlesh
Age: 104 (?)
Race: Romulan
Role/Rank: Captain
Personality:

Unlike Vulcans Romulans accept passion as an inspirational ally and although vulcans and romulans can look very simular this difference in idiology makes them everything but.

Hot-heated to even human standards, the Romulan mind is neverthe-less refined in the matters
of logic. Vanessa is one that doesn't enjoy tangents and prefers to get the job done, herself
promoted and those that served the cause well, and with captain titles of their own.

Vanessa cares little for romance but does believe the romulan empire will do best if association with the Federation is stronger tan what it is and beleives an example could help tip elders in the Romulan
empire to rethink their proud stance. The idea of a cloaking device not being on board the ship frustrates this Captain no end, as like most romulans beleives any technological edge not used, its an ace wasted to further weaknesses.

Neverthe-less she is silently impressed with what the current ship can do (although she will
not tell others), especially due to the flexibility its increased flight deck offers.

She is abrupt, to the point and almost always is found at the bridge going through war plans
with commanding officers.

The is not well liked among the officers and staff alike due to how many evaculation and war drills
at akward hours she imposes on the crew. still all know it makes them good, and due to such a stance she has lost left lives under her command than others which has seen as much war as she.

Her most notable achievement was overseeing a brillinantly executed withdrawal and evacuation of two planets in the front line of a borg offence, done without planning or warning. All those serving with her in previous missions have returned with promotions beyond their expectation.  As hard as she may be to deal with personally, her reports on others she feeds to admirality are glowing, all know this which is why most bite their tounge during her emotional bursts and yet another drill.

Candidate Captain

Name: Vicky Lansdil
Age: 37
Role/Rank: Captain

Personality

Calm, and more politically balanced than impressive tactically, Vicky has excelled in being able to inspire her crew to perform beyond expectations. More lenient than most Captains, Vicky has a natural knack of being able to guess despite having little or no information on some subjects.

"Lucky Vicky" became a coin termed by high brass when her previous ship, an explorer vessel  had a run-in with a Horogin hunting gang. Ship Records of her vessel weaving through the atmosphere of an unstable gas giants while two horrogin ships chased them is something most officers have seen personally  or at least heard of.

So much electric discharges made sensors more or less ineffective and seemingly insane requests from her to her pilot to enter this gas cloud then another managed to find the horrogin ships struck by lightning enough times for their sensors to be offline long enough for her ship the "USS Elon" to make it back into a secret Federation Spaceport without being tracked or followed.

The horrogin are extremely advanced race of hunters, none believed the ship's stories until its black box was shown to those curious enough to check.

She has been on leave for about a year due to family issues

I've received a CS from both Scribbles and Kate now.
In the interest of moving along the thread, I won't delay my decision too long. With that, I award the command to Kate. :)

Thanks for the effort you put into your own CS, Scribbles.
