Serenity based game

 Okay yet another game idea from yours truly. A Firefly/Serenity based game, with the usual Elliquiy twist thrown in. Players could play either the canon characetrs or we could make up our own crew. I would plan on running the game freeform. However, if combat became a problem, I do have the Serenety rpg on PDf so we could go with a rules lite version of that if need be. what do ya'll think?

Cool I'll PM him and see if he wants to try and revive the game. The serenity/firefly verse is such a wonderful setting. I stil lcan't understand why the show got canned, after only half a season. Though I think if they showed the episodes in the order they were meant to be showed it would have helped.

Networks are NOTORIOUS for canning projects that the network head doesn't love himself.  The only exception to this rule is Fox every so often.  And Murdoch is also the only network head who has restarted a series after he made the decision to cut it, when sales of DVDs vastly overshot projections (Family Guy).

But, for instance, NBC and ABC didn't want 24 as they said it wouldn't work.  Um, yeah... great job guys.

I'd second this, but with the addition that it applies to main networks.  Cable networks are a bit looser, seeing as they don't have to worry about ratings too much.  Of course, this still doesn't explain why the SciFi channel kills/cancels any show that gets high end ratings (Farscape, Stargate, etc.)  *shrug*

Anywho . . . I'd definitely be interested in a non-canon game.

  I was in Japan when the show came out. I didn't even here about it until After I saw Serenity. I do agree with you about the show being character driven, which is one reason why i think they should have showed the episodes in order. Anyway as far as this game goes, if it goes down it looks like it wil lnot be with canon characters, which I prefer.

I liked Wash too, my fav after Jayne and Mal. I liked almost all of the characters, though Simon and Book could be boring at times, but far from all the time. Zoe could be a bit boring too, and River could be a bit much at times, but for the better part of the show I loved them all.

I think I'd be interested. I was in one on rpol that I made a female mechanic, not Kaylee at all, but fun to rp.  The game died of course, so it'd be fun to do that, but would like it to have some real guidance.

  Not sure exactly what you mean by real guidance. Are you talking as far as using a gaming system or just that the GM know where the game is headed, or something totaaly different? at any rate you'd be a welcome addition.

   Assuming I had to start from scratch I'm thinking it would work like this. I send anyone who needs it a copy of the rules by YaHoo or MSN messenger, and you make the characetrs as Greenhorn characters(beginning), offer any help and assitence needed along the way. Once the game starts the only time rolls would be needed would be if the outcome can't easily be freeformed. Example you decide to shoot Badger instead of listening to him insult you. For timeframe I read on a fansite that the Movie was supposedly about 2 years into the TV Show timeline. So I'm thinking to start the game after the last episode and move from there, building up to the events of the movie which may or may not happen the same depending on the how things go.

Also, Jayne was wearing a Blue Sun (the guys who ran the institute that was training River) t-shirt.  It is faded, but the logo is there.  Two others time the logo shows up and River has one of her, er, moments:  When she is ripping the labels off those food packs, and b)  When they sneak her into the hospital, as the diagnostic machine starts up, the symbol is part of the boot up symbol.

I'm not a huge fan of the Serenity system honestly having played it in Table top...  Still... Oh I do have another character that I made for another Serenity game... she was basically an early edition of River.  Not near so deadly.  Built more as a spy... think La Femme Nikita crossed with River.

Hm, had some ideas for the last campaign, but not so sure I can use them now, as they were dependent on a few of the characters.  But, think I can manage something.   The first adventure I had in mind was the PCs do a favor for a retiring ship captain, who signs the ship over as payment.  Probably would include some combat.  Ok, considering I got the idea from the Magnificent Seven, a lot.  Will have to think about that.

As for particulars.  I would be using the Serenity system, characters would be made on the Veteran heroic levels.  Sorry, but don't feel comfortable using a free form game.  The game would not be using members of the Serenity crew, but would allow characters from the series to be used, with permission.  The game would be set during the same time as the series, just not exactly sure when.   

Oh, I don't have the rules on PDF.  I can try and help out with any questions you may have, but can't send out the PDF.

Lets see if I am getting some of the character ideas down right.  RogueJedi-pilot.  CherriTart-someone like Zoe.  Goblinmoon-mechanic or reader.  MechanicalImpulses-crazy but innocent?  RubySlippers-Companion or something like that.  I know others expressed an interest, and are welcome to play, but not sure if they had a character idea yet.

Oh, one other thing.  Will be working this weekend, so doubt I will be able to get much done.  Three 12 hours days is a drag.

No the best one is in the pilot episode(I think) when Wash is flying the ship, without a yoke. Somehow it made into post production, and if most of us are like me I didn't even notice it until I watched it with commentary.

  It is a space opera with heavy western flavor. Unlike most of the otehr Sci-Fi shows there are no aliens, and hight tech lasers/blaster(well maybe a few but they are extremely rare) The main ship, Serenity doesn't even have any guns. I for one think that was part of what made ther show good, but what made it great were the characters. It is very character driven. I'd highly recomend at least renting Serenity, or even better pick up the DVD for Firefly. The show was much better than the movie, but that was to be expected I reckon.

I remember the system from before (more or less) and last time I had a hard time getting the time together to play.  Now, I am not in any RPs anywhere (yet) so should be good to go.

Not 100% on character yet, but am considering either a gunfighter or an ex-Alliance combat medic who saw one too many Unpleasantries in the war and turned her back on the Alliance (which would also give the  ship a much-needed healer type).

ME- Companion of status who got booted out of the Guild and used her money and influence to run whores in the outer regions of the galaxy so has many nice little whorehouses. The Guild is far away and in the wild outback of the galaxy their power is not at all great. Money and influence are earned! She just took her talents to put to use to survive. Why well lets just say the Alliance and a rather traitorous client got together with her help. Will be the daughter of a prominant Alliance family she has to put her family and the government first over a traitor. Its not so bad now she has many employees, influence in the frindges enough to check the Guild and one of the finest whore schools in the outer reaches of the galaxy. Ok they aren't companions but her madams and elite whores are the finest found and feed into her network of influence with each new member. It helps she has friends of status in key places from crime lords to the Alliance. Well that's the idea a sin trade magnate of sorts.

Meh that would turn the game is a porno, I prefer character driven plots and sex scenes could be a sign thing as character could fall in love. Also you also have to remember that interested people don't always make characters :P.

Uhm, part of that would depend on the Captain, now wouldn't it?  Am not saying he would object, but he does get a say in what happens on HIS ship.  Unless you happen to own the ship, of course.

Also, how much money do you think you have?  Even with Moneyed Individual, you would only start out with something like 2250 credits.  A Companion would typically charge about 450 a day.  Admitted, a whore would get a lot less than that, but don't see you starting with having enough money to have a bunch of girls working for you.  Later on, as you got more money and contacts, yes.  At start, no.

I'd be fine letting her keep one or two on her shuttle, as long as they didn't interfere with the day to day function of my crew, and has thr cash to pay for three fares instead of one. Din ma? Well I'm not that aquainted with the game the Last Unicorn system has a wealth merit where you CAN literally have command of a mega-corp, criminal empire or a small planet if its high enough. And in others like white wolf you can start out with LOTS of resources. How was I supposed to know?

So looks like a Companion then for me with an indentured servant perhaps that might be a nice role for a player.

While I have no experience with Last Unicorn, and have never been fond of White Wolf.  But GURPS is the same way, sink enough points into Wealth and you could have more money than Bill Gates, to use a modern example.

Anyway, lets see, can I get some character concepts here?  Again, I am not looking for fully stated characters, just a broad idea of what you are wanted.  Also, it might let me know who is in and who is not.

    Firefly's are medium transports. you could hire on as a bodyguard type like Jayne from the Movie/TV show, and maybe do some bounty hunting on the side. Plenty of smuggling to be had, as long as you got no qualms about not being a law abidin' citizen, in which case you won't be part of my crew. Don ma?

I ran a fairly similar character in our Serenity game. My character was an ex Browncoat. He dropped out of med school midway through to join up, became a medical corpsman, attached to a MASH unit. He was captured during the Serenity Valley offensive, about a week before it ended, when he refused to abandon a triage position with wounded still there.

He wouldn't use guns, though I did give him a pretty high martial arts score. I said it was Aikido, so he was willing to defend himself .. just not really willing to attack anyone.

He ended up getting shot in the head by the captain. He'd been wounded, and was undergoing surgery when reavers turned up. The captain decided to give him a mercy killing and shot him while he was unconsious.

Ok, now, here is website that has some basics of character generation.  Take a look, and see if anything strikes your fancy.  Instead of the 54 points for attributes, you get 48, and 68 skill points (instead of the 72).

You know the gentleman with the liking of pain and a long revenge streak. Would give her an interesting background and could play with interesting traits. Memorable of course and guild companion to start...I can think of some neat approaches.

BACKSTORY:

Not much to say was born the legitimate daughter one of four children the others older and boys to the crime lord Adelei Niska and his wife Marie Niska, who was brutally killed by her father after she tried to leave him for another man. Always a devoted daughter he pulled many strings to get her into the new academy in the border worlds first she reminds him so much of the mother and second she never had a taste for the business like her borthers- That and after seeing men beat the crap out of in a mugging when younger and refusing to hurt them back he figured out she meant her beliefs- in a way her father respected that after all her mother was a most gentle creature in her way. Not that he ever admited this to her he was always a bit cold not in a bad way just kept her care for her to himself.

Adelei Niska Jr. (eldest as as cruel and brilliant), Nathan Niska and Nikolae Niska the youngest. Its not bad she is no coward just non-violent and with great promise as one of the new breed of Companions. She did well in the shortened training program and learned the basics just not near one of the elite ones from the core worlds. But with only half the time to train corners had to be cut. Belongs to the new Companion House Horizon made up of new Companions but from the border region so they have regional knowledge and connections. Deemed by inferior upstarts by the grand houses of the verse' and poorly trained she has no respect from most of the old guard- not that she cares. One thing that sets her apart from the grand ladies is business she understands sex is a source of power, of connections and is less picky than her core world counterparts like her teacher Inara. A weapon her kind intend to wield with precise talent.

Notes: I figure an undertrained new Companion from the sticks would have less respect from her peers of the proper Guild members like Inara. She will know what happened to her mother and although not like it figure it was expected and not faulting her father. She has three sadistic crime minded older brothers she is the apple of the fathers eye and a loyal daughter save for religious grounds is utterly non-violent. I gave her a generally broad education but none really specialized as she just graduated. Among her advantages she is very beautiful and has that special something if in the core systems to a fine family might have gone to a top Companion School like Inara. Has her fathers name isn't HERS so is a minor asset but in the border areas a crime bosses name does carry value at his level. Has contacts all over. Drawbacks is she will not fight and has no interest in it, is memorable, is loyal to her Guild and father so might have some interesting plot developments and has as a "border" trained Companion is rather disrespected by proper Companions that went to the very long traditional schools. Her dislike for them and their methods are also there she respects The Guild not the haughty ladies that look down on her kind. Her father will know of her tendencies to be non-violent after he saw her take a beating rather than fight back pretty much convinced him she's not a coward just different from him. Like her gentle mother. But an example if a Reaver was going to kill a friend she likely would throw herself in the way so is firm in her beliefs. But Companions have other weapons and value after all than fighting.  ;)

RubySlippers:  Several things, just to think about.  One, maybe a D2 in Linguistics?  I think Niska can speak something (not sure what) in addition to English and Chinese?  You don't have to, just tossing out an idea.  Two, I do seem to recall Niska saying that he was getting an earful from his wife at dinner about torturing one of her cousins.  I could be wrong about that, will have to go back and watch.  Maybe he remarried?  Three, At this point in time, Inara is not teaching, she is still on the Serenity.  The campaign will be taking place at the same time as the Firefly series.

shadowoftheheart:  Would say Surgery.  Looked at Simon, and that was one he had.  Maybe General Practice.  Does either of those work?

1)  What did your character do during the War?  Which side was he or she on, if any?  Was it voluntary, or were they drafted?  Did you lose anyone you cared about?
Mostly she slept in suspended animation as her colony ship  made it's way through the solar system.  She did have a nice dream at one point about robots and saving the world (earth).

2)  What are you hobbies?  How do you pass the time away?
Since she was a child she always had a knack for gadgets.  She loves to tinker.  That and practice Tai chi.

3)  What kind of first impression do you think you make?
At first glance she appears to be a skinny girl.  She has only very basic understanding of the 'verse and the past few hundred years.  While technically she is several hundred years old she's only just turned thirty both physically and mentally.

4)  Where were you born?  How did you wind up on Persephone?
She was born on Earth!  Anchorage, Alaska to be exact.  When she graduated from school, with her technological aptitude she was a shoe-in at MIT where she began a course of robotics engineering.  After two years she heard about a colony expedition.  She applied and was accepted considering she was at her prime and was passing her classes with flying colours.
On the ship personal cargo was limited.  She took family pictures and some texts specially made on plastic pages for longevity.  The destination a sun called HD 28185.  While it hasn't technically got an earth-like planet it does have a planet with an earth-like moon.  The planet itself was a water-based jovian planet.
Due to the distance of the planet the colony ship was part cryogenic and part generational.  The plan was to have several crews that would take turns in suspended animation that would also bear children.  However there was a problem.
It is uncertain how it happend but the first crew was lost, leaving the ship with only it's computer guidance and no way to repair any problems.  When it was next found it was several hundred years later.  Most of the people, colonists and crew alike, did not make the trip.  It had been sucked into a desintigrating orbit around an uninhabitable planet with no value.  It was only found by chance by a Unified Reclamation contract, salvage ship.
The ship saved who they could and salvaged what they could and brought it to UR.  While she was being brought up to date.  While being brought to speed she began playing around with things she found.  Taking apart and putting back together anything she found.  After finding some of the things she had tinkered with and finding some of them working better than before she was dumped into the UR research devision and basicly blackmailed into working for them.
After working for them for several years she devised a plan to escape.  Once she got out her small size allowed her to stow away on various ships until she was caught.
Deciding she was far enough away from UR and the allience she decided to let the ships know that she was there and join as a crew.

5)  Describe your quarters?  Are there pictures or other mementos on the walls, desk, whatever?  If so, what?  Also, where do you hide any valuables or illegal pieces of equipment from prying eyes.
At first her room looks like chaos.  Every surface, including her cot, is covered in gadgets, tools and doodads.  However on closer inspection the floor is completely bare leaving room on the floor to do things.  She has a few pictures in her room.  Pictures of her family and her closest friend all

Other stuff
While she's been in present day Kara's realised that things tend to have a chinese flavour.  To atleast appear to fit in she's taken on the family name Yuen.  It was the first chinese name that came to her mind.  In reality she's only ever learned english and a few words here and there of other languages.  People from UR and on her colony ship are the only people who would know her real name of Henderson.
Dispite being thirty her petite physique makes her look younger.  It also lets her hide in tight places which is how she stowed away.  Her clothes are mostly too large and all she owns are the few pictures, an MP3 player and some CDs with some of her texts (probably the last of such things outside a museum).  The hardcopy texts were ones relevent to setting up and maintaining the colony and were lost when they ship burned up.
She has plain brown hair, which she keeps back out of her face with a pair of polerizing goggles she normally keeps on her forhead but can wear to protect her eyes while welding or from bright sun or anything else.  Her boots are big and clompy and she doesn't bother lacing them since they're several sizes too large anyway.  Her shirt is green and she keeps the sleeves rolled up around her elbows.  Her pants she keeps tied with a bit of cord for a belt since they're too big and keeps the hems rolled up as well.
She's rather sensitive about her stature and isn't too sure about her age.  She hopes to find and liberate her co-colonists but doesn't know how exactly to go about doing it and is still a little paranoid about admiting who she is to anyone.  To get on the ship she gave only the smallest amount of information she had to.

Has 1023 songs and has been adapted to use more modern power cells.  Warenty expired several hundred years ago.

Kept in the same container as the photos.  They contain advanced mechanical and electronic engineering texts and some personal videos.  Not compatible with modern data disks

She is never, ever without her goggles.  They tint depending on the light level, the brighter the light the darker the tint.  They're mostly for welding but they work well in bright sunlight as well.  She some times wears them around her neck or on her forehead.
