The last one I saw was in the sixties.. is the next one out?

Sorry, I missed this at first Callie. No, the 2009 one is not out yet. It's scheduled for June this year. I only just managed to get my hands on 1960 and yeah...not happy.

Dude, it's E. A bit of non-con is hardly going to scare us ^^

Non-Con? Heck no. My Hyde stories head into the EX section. *nods*

*giggles* I'd love a Jekyll and Hyde fic, but I'm not sure I could ever find anyone to do him justice in my mind ^^

Comics have spawned many an inappropriate crush :P

I could always give it a shot. I have plenty of 'basic' plot bunnies involving the Jekyll/Hyde from the League movie. A few from the League comics. And one or two based on the actual book version. *winks*

Then again, my Hyde is more than just a brute. He's a monster.

Speaking of which...I did pick up a comic version of Jekyll/Hyde not long ago. The art was wonderful and the story was nice.

Sorry.. then might I suggestion: Atomic Robo (where you hear lines like 'Why do we even have the Square Cube Law?'), and Moriarty.

Cold Heritage

I saw Frank Miller's Holy Terror the other day. It was more disappointing than anything else. The art seemed amateurish and crude in a way that did not seem like an affectation. It was almost like seeing his Sin City style take an atavistic turn and Frank displayed some sort of proto-Sin City. The writing was less offensive than expected, as a lot of what I had read made it out to be something more bombastic than it was. In a lot of ways, it was just disappointing. A lot of people made it out to be Frank Miller's great big hateful propaganda piece . . . but it was just this half-made thing.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

The one with Jack the Ripper?
If yes, I really enjoyed that one. Hyde was really devious in it.
But also somewhat charming..

Sorry Civil War was the end of my reading mainline Marvel

LunarSage

Really?  I absolutely loved Civil War... such great storytelling in my opinion.  Captain America finally got some recognition of badassery.

Siege was pretty great, I thought.

I didn't really enjoy Civil War because I think that it ended up presenting both sides fairly poorly. The Registration side went from "hey maybe someone should be keeping track of these super powered vigilantes, 99% of whom have no more legal authority than the people in masks they beat up, and make sure they know how to use the highly destructive powers they command in a way that won't be slightly less destructive than the Hulk passing through" to mustache twirling villains who use killer clones of their friends and sent armed squads under cover of night to apprehend people. And then the other side was "how dare they try to make us accountable! It is our inalienable right to use our unfathomable power with no checks and balances, no oversight, and absolutely zero accountability to anyone!"

And then the mutants. Oh man the mutants. "Why should we care? This isn't a mutant problem. We're not getting involved. You people don't care about us mutants, why should we care about you?" Registration, much like Galactus coming to consume the Earth, was just something the mutants steered clear of while they sat in their little corner of the Marvel U, crying about how tough they have it that the world fears them for absolutely no reason at all.

I really disliked Siege.
It was so damn superficial, and I felt you could have cut the middle out and nothing would have been lost.
The "Big bad" was pretty pathetic in the end, and -nothing- was really given screen time that allowed us to get into the villain or heroes minds.
Most of it was meaningless, empty fluff.

Civil war? Now that was just bad... Tony Stark out of character, (sure, Tony Stark would use VILLAINS to hunt HEROES who don't want to conform) Cap out of character, and pretty weak in the end. All of Marvels latest "big events" have been empty and meaningless. The last one I liked was House of M.

I dunno about it being out of character for Tony.  Remember the "Armor Wars"?  Stark has never been as heroic as people think and he's always been willing to take unethical and drastic actions for what he believes is for the "greater good".  Stark has actually murdered several villains in his career as well.  Supporting the SRA with such a heavy hand was very much in character for him in my eyes.  He's more like Doctor Doom than he'd like to admit.

The thing was.. Tony did his own clean up in that one. I didn't like the way in the buildup with the Illumniati.. you had Xavier and Strange acting so far out of character it wasn't even funny.

No.. Armor wars was at least written like he was cleaning up his own mess.. Civil War was him going 'The Law is the total of the thing.. " Which in Armor Wars he even fought against.

LunarSage

Well we may have to agree to disagree on that one.  :-)

I am curious though if you also thought Reed Richards was acting out of character during Civil War.

Personally, I had a geekgasm when Thor just -owned- Iron Man after he came back from the dead.  Awesome stuff.  ;D

Cold Heritage

I remember this one time Thor gave Tony a magic gemstone because Tony was like "hey Thor, Asgardian stuff is pretty great, bet I could use it to help humanity!" and Thor was like "yea, verily, I doth trust thee with yon magic gem, and I trust thine intentions to be pure!" to which Tony replied, "oh, yeah, totally. I'm gonna use it to make like clean, renewable energy so that we can stop using fossil fuels and other environmentally damaging energy sources."

And then, later on, Thor went to this Eastern European country where the tyrannical regime was about to commit genocide on an ethnic minority. And you know what Thor did? He stopped that. He stood there with his hammer and told these dudes with tanks and guns who wanted to perform a massacre and ethnic cleansing, "I say to thee nay."

Then! Then! Tony Stark rolls on up in his Iron Man armor and is like "look, Thor, you can't get involved here. I'm here at the request of the US state department, and we want you to back off."

And Thor replied to the effect of "trollop, art thou serious? Thou demandst the god of thunder stand by and knowingly allow innocents to come to harm?"

Tony doesn't answer except to say, "okay man, this is me asking nice. I only do it once. You had your shot." And then he flies off.

To meet Dr. Doom!

And Doom is like "yo dawg remember that one time I stole the Silver Surfer's powers and used them against him? That was some tight mad science supervillainy, fo rizzle!"

And Tony was like, "yeah, that was pretty tight!" And goes back to Stark Industries. While he's at Stark Industries, he builds himself a new set of armour! A THORBUSTER set of armour, designed only to take out Thor!

(for those watching at home, Thor is a super hero who has fought - to his own detriment - to save the Earth numerous times and genuine believes Tony Stark is his friend)

Now, this armour has two notable features: inspired by Dr. Doom! it steals Thor's own powers and redirects it at Thor, and it uses a magic gemstone from Asgard as a power source.

Why, yes, gentle reader, it is the very same magic gemstone Thor gave Tony with the explicit understanding that Tony was going to make clean energy for all of Midgard.

Oh, and you better believe they fight. Tony gets the better of Thor for a while, since Thor is holding back and doesn't want to hurt his friend (remember, Thor + Tony = Friends is what Thor Actually Believes). Eventually Captain America shows up and intervenes so they stop fighting, and Dr. Doom! marches in his troops to annex the territory. The US state department orders Tony and Cap out, so they go.

But not before they both say to Thor, "we're very disappointed in you, man. What did you think you were doing, protecting this innocent ethnic minority from being slaughtered?!" to which Thor looks at them with sad, uncomprehending puppy dog eyes. He genuinely does not understand why these two great heroes are browbeating them. It ends with Cap and Tony going "we're not friends anymore, Thor. We don't even know you anymore."

This is during a storyline where Thor would go on to rule Earth. In this storyline Thor managed to eliminate poverty, disease, racism, sexism, classism, religious conflict, and 99% of political conflict. In this entire storyline Thor is depicted as being the villain. Thor's utopia was bad because humans were too lazy under Thor's idyllic rule to watch their kids (Thiafli, one of Thor's friends, is convinced that Thor has done wrong because a boy drowns because his mother was too drunken to properly supervise the boy, and because there was just so much food some of it was left to rot on the vine because there were people who were just too lazy to harvest it - this comes after Thiafli [Thiafli through time travel sheenanigans went from like 2000AD to like three hundred years later] is shown like a dozen people who, in pre-Thor rulership days, would have been unable to become the master pianists, mathematicians, and scientists they worked hard to become because they would not have had the financial means under the status quo that existed before Thor).

I also remember a time when Tony got bodyswapped with one of his Soviet counterpart enemies. I think it was one of the Red Dynamos. While in the guy's body, Tony committed acts of treason against the USSR and maimed a guy. Seriously, Tony ripped a dude's hands off. The guy had black comic book blood coming from his stumps. It's not explicitly mentioned in that issue what happens to the guy Tony swapped bodies with - the issue ends with Tony and him switching back and the Dynamo guy getting arrested by Russian authorities. But honestly, the guy who lost his hands probably bled out and died and the Red Dynamo guy probably got death or the rest of his life in a gulag in Siberia.

I can forgive him for his Illuminati stuff. It's always laudable to try and get rid of the Hulk.
Thank you, fellow Elliquiyan, and have a wonderful day.

That was about the time the Ultimates went all wonky too. The invasion of the US to 'save' the US from their government, and such.

There was a lot of 'Bush is bad' in the comics around that time.

Civil War was horrible.

So they finally catch Capt. America and this Sally woman interrogates him, and trying to prove that he's out of touch with the American public.  And to do so the oh so wonderful writers use pop culture!  That's what America is all about people!  Not freedom, not democracy, it's all about YouTube, and Kim Kardashian and all that superior stuff!  No, we don't need the Civil Rights!  We have... TELEVISION!  THE INTERNETS!  That is what America is all about people!  Yeah!

I wish I could find the blog that was following Civil War, one of the posts had a fellow blogger use the same panels but gave a MUCH better rebuttal as to what America or rather what Captain America should have been about.  Wish I could find it.

It was at that point that I realized that it was over.  Marvel had lost touch with what it wanted to do with it's stories.  Civil War killed my love of Marvel.

The point I figured that Marvel had jumped the shark was when Joe Quesada said on TV that Cap was 'irrelevant' to modern america. IE.. He had nothing to offer to us or represent for us. As a service man, that was downright insulting. And EVERY branch of the military was pissed off by that statement. Cap reflects our core values, be it.. Semper Fi or Honor, Commitment, and Courage, or anything else. You read our oaths of enlistment.. Cap lives them.

This may be what you are seeking, Chris.
Not the original page, but yes.  That's the rebuttal I was looking for.  It's writing like that which made me sigh and shake my head.  And the sad part of it is, there are little flashes of inspiration like my favourite quote that I've pulled out waaaay to many times this year already, which I'll do right now, again:

http://captain-america.us/articles/civil-war.htm

This is what Cap is about.  THIS is what Civil War should have used as the ending.  Instead we have that idiotic tirade from Sally Floyd (who I think shoots Captain America as well later on?)

Gah.

And I am with you Callie.  I'm CANADIAN, and I've never served in the Forces.  However, like you, I see Captain America as a symbol, a symbol of what should be right in the world.  Or at least in our little corner of it.  He's timeless, he's an ideal, he's something which all good men should aspire to be in a world full of excuses and shortcuts.

That's why I hate Civil War, the excuses and shortcuts and cheats WON.  That's not why I read fiction.  If I wanted to see them winning, I'd go outside and read the newspapers, or the celebrity gossip.

It was Sharon Carter and Crossbones who shot Cap.

The problem I have with Civil War is that Pro-Reg shouldn't've been "excuses and shortcuts and cheats."

I was also impressed with this one scene.. the Punisher guns down some bad guys..and Cap unwinds on him.. but Frank doesn't fight back. Cap is the one guy he's respected his whole life. It was, in it's way, an impressive scene.

I'm gonna tell you what I see from this little recap here from a purely analytical point of view. I've never read the Avengers or Ultimates or whatever the fuck this Marvel stuff is (I'm a DC girl long time!), so if I'm wrong about any details, that's why.

This is clearly a story that has put Thor as the UN/socialists and Tony Stark and the US as the Republicans and the US. Thor is the European 'other' that the US sees as trying to control their actions and dictate their laws on the world. From the comment on Thor's "bad" and "lazy" ruling, you see criticisms of European nations. In the criticism of higher education you see the words of Rick Santorum and other equivalent extreme Republicans. Basically, the message I'm seeing from this one is 'only America is allowed to interfere in other countries.'

Interesting for a comic book to be so blatantly Conservative in message...

As for Captain America, I think he embodies all the qualities we should all try to have in life in general. Honor, Commitment and Courage should be used be everyone. I think people have just forgotten that.
