Anyone else notice you cannot copy paste pictures anymore? I have been trying to figure it out. I went looking on Google for some pictures for my rps. and I cannot copy/paste anymore?

Super odd.  Like when you right click on the image there is no "copy image address" option?

What browser do you use?

I did some research on it. Apparently Google just did an agreement with Getty Images and we can no longer just copy an image and use it like we used to. I even tried on Bing, and it is the same thing. So much for all the picture threads! I am convinced it is some Conservative idea to stop porn!! (that was totally a joke!)

SO enjoy the pictures you have now and forget about posting more.

One way around this, I have found when that happens, is to screencap or snip the image, save to your HD and then collect in the wiki. More work, yes but for those pics you just can't do without...

Depending on what browser you use, I'd suggest looking for an add-on.  I'm betting there are already extensions that will help with that -- there are several for Chrome, and if you use Pinterest, using the Pin-it extension can help you save pics on Pinterest pretty easily.

I'm not having an issue doing it from chrome or IE.

King Serperior

I'm not having any issues.  Then again, I find most of my images almost exclusively through Tumblr.  A number of tests with different images shows I can still do so.

Still, that's very strange.

Like KS I'm mostly a tumblr user and have had no issues with google and chrome so far, but a quick search brought me this:

Quote from: From ArticleFor users who want to stick with Google, the image previews you see are actually hot-linked images, so right clicking and choosing "open image in new tab" (or whatever your equivalent browser option is) will still get you a direct image link. There is also already an open source browser extension called "Make Google Image Search Great Again" that will restore the "View Image" button. But if you're looking to dump Google over this change, Bing and DuckDuckGo continue to offer "View Image" buttons.

Article about Google Getty lawsuit and deal

So it's annoying, but it looks like there are some viable options like a different way of browsing or those Gypsy suggested.  Hope it works out for you Verasaille!

That's very strange, indeed. I have no trouble with pictures, regardless the source.

Is it just a Getty Image thing?  I know that a while back Flickr did something similar.  I had a ton of images saved in my Flickr account, but when they stopped allowing you to hotlink them, all of the pics I had linked via Flickr no longer worked.  :/

Sounds as if Getty Images has done something similar.

QuoteFor users who want to stick with Google, the image previews you see are actually hot-linked images, so right clicking and choosing "open image in new tab" (or whatever your equivalent browser option is) will still get you a direct image link.

I've found that for me this mostly doesn't work, as a huge proportion of the images Google presents are hosted on Google or Pinterest, and the links offered to those images are never to the picture itself but to the folder in which it is hosted (and the description comes from the first picture in the folder, not the one searched for).  Clicking on the image does the same thing.

[This is part of the reason that Google images is no longer a useful tool for identifying pictures (that and the fact that people on Pinterest and Google tend to identify by picture characteristics (like red hair) rather than by photographer or model.]

It might be possible to take the url for the hotlinked image to TinEye and get to the full-res image that way.

So I went to go check this out using my usual method of right clicking and then viewing the image in a new tab (mind you, I'm using Chrome, but I think it works on a few other browsers as well) and it worked fine for me. However, if you just click on the picture of if click the scroll wheel (equivalent to CTRL+LEFT CLICK), then it doesn't give you an actual URL. Might be just one way to get around this.

On Firefox, although the 'view' button has been replaced with a 'save' button, right-clicking on the image preview and choosing 'open link in new tab' will take you to the page the image is hosted. From there, it's one more click to the image itself and its url, which is still copiable. It's a tad fiddlier, but nothing to ditch Google over.

I have essentially always used the "View Image - Copy Link"-method. I have never really copy-pasted images. Perhaps that is why this all seems very odd to me? Either way, I don't think it's going to pose much of a problem for our visual media threads. Most of them seem to still be trucking along nicely.

I do believe it has also been recommended for pictures to be saved and then reuploaded to the E-wiki? That would definitely also be a fairly easy workaround for any such issues, although bulk-posts might get a tad frustrating.

I might not have gotten the topic of this thread right though, but I hope that it helps?

Edit: To add some context, I've been using modified Firefox browsers for ages. Some options may not be available in other browsers - I wouldn't know.

If you are using Edge then yes it is a problem. Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the 'copy image address' functionality. You can get round it by either; right click -> Inspect Element -> look for the image tag in the HTML -> Edit as HTML -> cut & paste URL or right click -> Ask Bing about this picture -> See full size image -> copy URL from address bar.

It depends on the source site, I just typed dog and clicked on a random image, and while the view image button isn't there anymore, the options to open the image on a new tab, and copy the image's url, and even download image were there. It's a matter of copyright, so it will be different for every web site.

This is hitting the news, looks like something big did happen. I also find it very annoying.

The add-on mentioned in the article has been added to the Firefox extensions list.
