There is plenty of time!  I'm only tentatively going to be doing the player selection by 7 Jan or so.
That's good to know, thank you. I'll keep this game in mind... and hopefully I'll be up to writing again before too long. Maybe I can come up with some character ideas in the meantime, too.

Do you know yet if this game will be better suited for characters who are attached to one city or area (assuming that where, exactly, is flexible), or characters who are more free to wander?

My mind is kinda going this direction for the Night Caste

Artifact playing cards, speciality in thrown :) I think that could work with Ebon Shadow style.

Personally I like more wandering or odyssey style adventures, and the opportunity to travel the world will be open to characters if they choose to take that path...sometimes this is contrary to nation-building sorts who might rather stay in one place and bolster it.

Ultimately it's up to the group of players--if I do end up with enough people to run two groups at once then we'll do what we can to put people together where they'll enjoy it the most  :)

I'll focus more on thinking up wanderer-style characters, then. Both can be fun, but I've found that characters focused on one place don't work so well in all games... and knowing what to expect makes it easier to come up with ideas, too.

Terian

Tried to give my character the potential to play in either.  The only thing she really won't do so well in is a social game.

HairyHeretic

Generally my characters would roam about at the start, though they may have some small established power base (depending on the concept). Most would probably think about empire building once they were more powerful.

#31
Concept: Gentleman Thief (Gambler, con man, etc)
Caste: Night
Supernal: Probably Thrown Larceny
Brief Background: Wei Xiaobao grew up aboard the Saikal's Maw, the ship of the infamous Pirate Queen Crimson Smile. The only male amongst a ship of women pirates, his upbringing was unusual to say the least. As he grew older, he caught strange glances and heard almost whispers of conversations about his birth, though none would ever speak directly of it.

At the age of ten, his mother took him ashore in Wu Jian, the first time he had ever been off a boat, and abandoned him there. Her only words to him were "I've fulfilled my oath, and the debt is paid. You tell him that, hear me?", and then left without a backward glance.

Wei fell in with a gang of street children, leaning the tricks of their trade, though it was in gambling he found his true calling. Over time he learned the ways of the rich and powerful ... after all, they had more to gamble with, and more to lose.

Wei drew his Second Breath at the end of a high stakes gambling bout, the final players being a Fire aspected Outcaste crimelord of Wu Jian, Wei himself and (so he claims) Plentimon, the God of Gamblers. Stories are still told of the night that mountains of jade were won and lost on the roll of a dice and toss of a card, the power of Emerald Eye Han and the Five-fold Lotus Brotherhood shattered, his closest lieutenants slaughtered and his fortress casino burned to the ground.

My pleasure!  I figured most people would be busy with the holidays but wanted to at least advertise it to get their creative juices churning in the meantime!

And now that half of the holidays are behind us, I'm back to the grindstone!

I'll collect my thoughts over the next couple of days regarding any character concepts submitted by then  ;D

Re Z L

I've updated the House Rules section of the world-building thread.  You'll also see I have "Stunts" listed but nothing explaining the change--I'm still mulling over what I want to do with them.

Cessali

Might I suggest my own implementation?  Stunting rewards have consolidated considerably in Ex3 -- you always get two dice, with varying levels of successes.  If you describe what you're doing IC, at all, you can consider yourself good for a level 1 stunt, with higher stunting rewards awarded (willpower and/or successes) after the fact by the ST if they like it enough.

Guancyto

You still taking people for this? I had a notion for a wandering half-demon troublemaker of an Eclipse...

HairyHeretic

A demonblooded Solar. That's going to lead to some very mixed feelings :)

Yes!  Still accepting applicants  :)

My cut-off was originally planned for 7 Jan.  Which I might push back a couple of days considering I'm still futzing around with a few setting things.

Name: Ayala, Purple Witch
Concept: Wandering halfie troublemaker
Caste: Eclipse
Supernal: Occult
Picture:
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Brief Background:
Born of a humble neomah on the Street of Golden Lanterns, no one particularly expected You There Brat to survive, much less to thrive, but with a ready intellect and boundless ambition she eventually fell into the claws of ever-stronger and scarier demons, finally ending as one of the servants of Deer-Footed Mara. Learning the secrets of sorcery from the Shadow-Eater and learning of a world outside the Brass City, she resolved to bargain and barter her way to freedom. On the fifth day of that freedom, the grains of silver sand fell away from her feet and she beheld for the first time a yellow sun. The sigil of the Eclipse lit upon her brow, declaring her one who would walk between worlds without fear.

She doesn't really... get Creation. But having been appointed by the Sun as an emissary and champion, she'd be remiss in not putting forth the effort.

Playing with various concepts and going to just ask: I'm thinking of trying out a crafter, but I have issues with the inordinate number of crafting skills that are now available.  Would you allow a house rule of just using the 2e method of focusing them by element?

My initial response is to say no, but I do recognize there is a bit of excess xp expenditures when it comes to Craft.  Personally I don't believe it is a huge drawback, though it does leave a sour taste in the mouth.

I will say this though:  I will very generously allow someone to utilize Arete-Shifting Prana to shift crafting dots between related fields.  In fact I would be pretty open to very broad crafting categories as well (ie. "Blacksmithing" instead of "Forge Weapons").

I'm also leery about requiring the Craft: Artifacts, Craft: Geomancy, and Craft: First-Age Artifice abilities, as they feel entirely superfluous to me (there's little difference between knowing how to craft a sword and knowing how to craft an artifact sword in the grand scheme of things).  You would still require the Lore and Occult dots, though.

How does that work for you?

Side Update:

I'll be going through the thread today and tomorrow and sorting out any questions I may have for anyone and coming up with other details as needed.  No one seemed (as I recall) terribly insistent on a location to start, my initial thoughts are to begin around the Dreaming Sea area--possibly Kamthahar.  But I'm also putting some other story hooks into the World Building thread, which may influence where some of you may want to begin as well.

CeruleanSerenity

I'll hopefully be submitted a character tonight... I was thinking an Eclipse who's a courtesan and member of a secret society of the same, likely a user of Dreaming Pearl Courtesan Style, though there are a lot of details I still haven't worked out. I was planning to leave some things a bit vague so I can fill them in to fit the game later, and so she could work in any starting location... but there are some things I still need to figure out. Mostly her motivations and current status in the organization, even if details about it might have to wait.

So I'd be fine with any starting area, but I've always liked the East and South, so the Dreaming Sea would be okay with me.

I'm glad I waited  to ask about location, since it would've had an impact on some of the backgrounds stuff I was going to ask when we were to show sheets. Now I just have the artifact related ones (mostly).

Blacksmithing was actually what I was hoping for ^_^

Now I just have to come up with an idea...

With only one day to go, I really don't think I'm going to make the deadline.  I hope everyone has fun, though.

I'm thinking I'm going to push the deadline back to Wednesday (11th) as there's still a couple other things I want to finish up first.
