A weird plastic smell came from my laptop, and then I saw smoke coming out of it and then it turned off. Is it gone for good? I can't afford a new one right now and I have so many files I don't want to lose...
This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck.
It always ends in a fight.
You pulled me from the river. Why?
I don't know.

If the thing actually started smoking, then im positive theres been some kind of damage, which would explain the shutoff. That, or it had an overheat failsafe. Either way, smoke is very bad. You can visit places that can transfer your files from its hdd to another machine.

Smoke is a real bad sign and it's highly unlikely the laptop itself can be salvaged, however, you can probably still get all your information off of it when you do get a replacement.  If you're unfamiliar with how to remove the hard drive and hook it up to an enclosure to pull the info off yourself, take the laptop to a specialist (basically any computer repair shop should be able to do this easily) and ask them to recover the information.  They'll charge you for it, though, so whether you want to do that or not depends on how important that information is to you.
