Hey all. I was wondering if there was a site where you can get free books for your tablet or Kindle?

I'm not talking about illegally downloading anything. I know there are some sites that let you "borrow" books, much like an online library. I just can't seem to find any.

All the free books from the play store are samples, or just absolutely rubbish.

You might try some of the publishing house sites - and I think Amazon has free books for Kindles

Project Gutenberg has some as well:  http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Free_Kindle_Books

With Amazon, do you have so sign up for anything? Or pay a fee?

There's a 'prime membership' one, but I just added a link to their page about free collections without Prime.

Amazon has tons of free ebooks for Kindle.  Tons.  They also post links to sites that list free ebooks.

Subscribe to pixelofink.com and they will send you an email every day with 2-4 free books and others for $.99 to $3.99.

If you have a library membership check their site for books to borrow via ereaders and Kindle.

It's already been said, but it bears repeating -- check your local library.  Even if you're in a rural spot, your library may have hooked up with a larger urban one.

My library lets me check out 15 ebooks at a time, and I can keep them for up to 3 weeks.   They have a LOT of titles, enough that I can always find something I'm interested in reading within a few seconds of browsing.    I haven't been back to the physical library since I downloaded their app.  :)

And if I don't like it once I start reading, it's one click to return and remove.  It definitely makes me more willing to take a chance on reading things I normally wouldn't.

If you enjoy sci fi and fantasy, Baen Books have a free library on their website with a bunch of 1st and 2nd books in their series. When they publish new hardbacks, they also include a CD (sometimes) that has a ton of books on them, up to and including complete series. To my knowledge they're said these are free to share, and can be found here

http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

Each of those CDs will have 30-50 books on it. I'm rather partial to David Webers books myself.

If you need to convert the format to something you can read on your device, I use Calibre.

A lot of local libraries offer an e-book borrowing option now.

I cannot say for certain on Kindles specifically (though someone has, i think).  On my nook, Barnes & Noble has a specific section for free or dollar books.  You can get a lot of things whose copyright has run out for free as well as promotionals from authors hoping you will read the freebie and buy more.  All I had to do was type "free books" in the search field of my nook...

Check my A/A | O/O | Patience is begged. Momma to Rainbow Babies and teetering toward the goal of published author. Tentatively taking new stories.
