Avatar: Academy of the Four Elements (Interest Check)

Hello ladies and gentlemen of Elliquiy, I am Vaulera, and this is an interest check for my idea set in the universe of Avatar the Last Airbender. As fans may have surmised from the title of this thread, it will be set in a location where all four of the bending techniques are taught, which means post war canon. The time period will be in the very start of Republic City, in a very much unsteady time. The four nations (Air having been annihalated,) will have come together only very recently, and tensions between the various nations run high. In an effort to unify the future populace of the still growing Republic City, the council has announced the founding of the Academy. The purpose of The Academy is to create a future for Republic City where the four nations and elements are joined together. Their way of doing this is to teach both bending and conventional studies in one great establishment, inhabited by thousands of students ranging from the elementary ages all the way to a collegiate education. Everything said before is theoretically how it is supposed to operate.

The roleplay will center around the students of the establishment, of three countries. I would generally like to adhere to Canon, so tragically there will be no air-bending, nor an avatar involved in the story. Occasionally, the students will go outside of the city on one of their given free times, where they are given a weekend to travel about the city. There will be roleplaying of certain classes, as well as the spaces between them. Interactions between characters should be given the most attention to anything. Although it isn't planned from the get go, if there is a great deal of interest, then there might be openings for some students. This being said! This is an interest check and an interest check only!

Absolutely. Blood bending would probably be frowned upon however. Even some special inherited bending traits, like the special blood-bending featured in Legend of Korra! This would be with discussion, of course.

As far as potential characters, I have no problem or preference as to what nation they are from because I can't choose a favorite.

Okay, I think we have plenty of people to start deciding on specifics. This is lots of interest. From what I see, we have maybe four firebenders, two earthbenders and some water benders. Although I'm eternally a fan of firebending, I could also do earthbending if it needs to happen. Right now, I think everyone would want the advanced subsets of bending, like metal. Since there are a lot of firebenders, they can't all be bending lightning willy-nilly. As for blood-bending, I think it might never come up, but I would allow very, very small numbers for that. Now, as far as the actual roleplay is concerned, how much conflict do you desire? I can make it almost entirely between the players and their factions, or almost entirely based on outside influences in the early and developing stages of republic city.

If a character doesn't opt for one of the element specialisation (such as Lightning, Metal bending, etc...) will they have any other options (pehaps even creation of new specialisation, which for some reason or other won't see the light of day in canon)?

for the conflict maybe we could have like a power struggle in the school, each group (all one faction or multiple factions together) tries to get the upper hand and "rule the school" kind of like each group is a 'gang'

Aw, sad... no Airbending. I always tried to find a logical way around the lack of canon characters - mainly because Aang even said they were nomadic people, so it could be possible there were Airbenders outside the temples.

Anyway... I suppose I could play a water bender - particularly since I studied Tai Chi a bit.

I agree outside conflict is always welcome. At the same time, I'm sure some internal conflict will happen almost naturally.

Yes, the setting does lend itself particularly well to different factions within bending schools of thought, that's for sure. Now, in regards to special bending talents not featured within the canon, I could do it. You would have to be immensely convincing, however. I'll need to make up some sort of character sheet soon, as interest has picked up.

Generally speaking everything I do is freeform, unless specified. If I have a co-Gm who suggest a system, and I think it will benefit the rp, I'll use a system.

Okay, something that I have been wondering. Would you guys like if we accelerate the timetable from Korra, instead of placing it within Aang's lifetime? It would open up the possibility of airbending and the avatar without hurting the current canon.

I'm for pushing the timeline forward, though it would be interesting to work on the foundation of Republic city, the end of Book 2 in the Legend of Korra also opens quite a few possibilities.

Okay, so it seems that basically the timeline is going to be jumped from the foundation of Republic City in Aangs lifetime to well past it. This leaves us room for airbending. PM me your character ideas! I will compile a list of the different benders with a brief summary of each. Airbending is available, but if you want something super special, then you have to be approved by me first.

I would definitely like to move to an airbender.  However, I'm wondering how far after the events of Korra we'll be.  Would an airbender be, say, a child or grandchild to one of Aang's grandchildren?  Or would it be later still?

I would prefer later still, because I like to dodge any sort of canonical involvement, but if necessary, grandchildren at ages 16-25.

Okay, with the weekend I've been given some breathing room, and I can resume a more active startup. It will fall under light, or NC if our ons and offs go to a more extreme level. Generally, I expect the vast majority of sex to be consensual, if not all of it. If anyone hasn't sent me an idea for a character, please do so. Also, I apologize for being inactive, but during the week I find it a little challenging!

Seconded, if there's room!  I can be flexible, but my first idea's a Firebender...who has reasons to hang with people who aren't.   :-)  Earthbender and Waterbender after that with equal weight.
