Does anyone have any thoughts?

PHPBB3 lacks some rather key features SMF has, especially some coming in SMF 2.0. The main ones that come to mind are SSI (not terribly important but made writing the current dieroller easier), Karma (a strike against SMF really, the way it's turned out here), a mod handler (SMF 2 is supposed to have hooks also, I think), RSS (Like we use that).

At the same time, it is easier to integrate with Joomla (which would let me set up shopping carts, blogs, and so on), and has some features even SMF 2 won't have (Jabber integration - get IMed when someone posts in a notified topic).

I haven't completely checked out PHPBB3's source yet, but since it's a complete rewrite, I would expect it to be better written than PHPBB2 (hopefully much better), with better template handling. I'm obviously not terribly concerned about ease of use on my end although conveniences are nice...

Rumor has it it's also faster and less server intensive, which would be a plus for us.

Does anyone have any opinions?
