I would argue that the State-run news agencies in China (not unlike the North Korean news/propaganda machines) conduct their reporting out of necessity. If they speak poorly about their leader, they will be tortured and killed, along with their families. So their motivation is self-preservation. Fox News, on the other hand, reports on the Idiot in Chief out of profit, laziness, or sheer stupidity. The Fox news reporters/employees have the ability to educate themselves on the truth, but choose to follow their dictator blindly.

So Chicago police.. these wonderful brave people.. (sarcasm but I am sure there are plenty of good officers there, these in this story however, are NOT!)

So during a raid they handcuff an 8 (eight) year old child. Child is in handcuffs for over 30 minutes, long enough to leave bruises. And the justification. The official justification.

The officers didn't know his age and only when they determined he was a minor did they remove the cuffs.

Now if the child was... say 16 or 17 you know I would say.. yeah it can be hard to tell at a glance.

But 8.. fucking 8?! You have to be seriously brain damaged to think someone at the age of 8 can be anything but a minor. The poor thing now has serious problems sleeping etc.. you know.. trauma!

All because the cops thought there was an assault rifle in the home.. and their search that was thorough enough to make holes in the walls found no such weapon.

If we go with a descriptivist understanding of language, speech acts are fundamentally no different than other actions and are merely used in social situations to bring about certain effects. For example, in asking for a pair of shoes to be handed from a bin, we do not pick out a certain set of facts about the world. Rather, we only utter the words with the expectations that it will cause certain behavior in others. Learning what is and isn't a pair of shoes is more like learning the rules of a game than making declarations about what exists in the world, so what is or isn't a pair of shoes depends only on the success or failure of the word "shoes" in a social context, regardless of what actual physical properties a pair of sneakers has in common with flipflops.

In other words, language is use, nerds. :P

I remember seeing this awesome piece of tv news footage from North Korea last year where not only were their female soldiers in great form goose-stepping (NK soldiers always excel at this sport) but what's more, they were jutting their hips from side to side in rhythm between the goose-steps, and in a fast tempo (and smiling, too)!  :P Laughed so hard at that, it was from some massive parade, Kim's birthday or something.

The TL;DR in case you don't have time to click & read the articles--two conservative politicians have died. One is being treated for sure as a homicide. Linda Collins was from Arkansas & a former senator. Found dead and decomposing in her home purportedly. Neighbors said they heard gunshots.

Within a few days, another former Republican senator--Jonathan Nichols--died of a gunshot wound.

Will keep an eye on the news for updates for either case. I don't think they are immediately related cases, but at the same time, it's a bit eerie the news came out for them both within the same few days.

Youtube had a pretty rough week, as people were testing their algorithms and discovered it picks up on what videos contain children in little clothing, then recommends them to people that watch videos of minors in little clothing. That if content is sexual it will recommend younger and younger videos until leading to home movies of small children in bathing suits. Often the parents have no idea it is happening, as videos they uploaded with no subscribers suddenly get tens of thousands to millions of views. On top of this youtube has been facing heavy criticism due to Steven Crowder, a conspiracy thoerist and far right member with millions of subscribers, who has been harassing and targeting a gay journalist. This has been going on for over a year, and youtube faced such heavy backlash they finally made a statement that while his content was hateful and hurtful, they were letting it stay up because that isn't in violation of their TOS. Their TOS, explicitly says these things aren't allowed.

After having that pointed out many times, Youtube made a statement that they are going to rework their TOS. They eventually after more backlash demonetized Crowder. But then stated they'd reinstate him if he stopped linking to his "Socialism is for f*gs" shirt with the journalist's face on it in his videos. Ted Cruz has weighed in against youtube for "censoring" Crowder(Who hasn't been censored). Youtube decided to crack down on extremist videos, which included suspending a large portion of documentaries and groups that report on and document hate movements. Then came out interviews with gay people who work at google about the horrible oppressive conditions, and how alt-right google employees doxxed many queer people who work at google and google just left them adrift.
