Chartrain County (IC Thread)

"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer...

Then one of the slayers died, but was brought back to life again through CPR.  This resulted in two full-fledged slayers existing at the same time for the first time in history...

Then that slayer died again before being brought back to life through magic."

The date is September, 2001 and it's the start of a new school year.  After the death of Buffy Summers at the end of Season 5, a third slayer has been activated.  This game will take place in the fictional town of Croixville, a recently discovered hotspot for supernatural activity.  The events of the game will happen in parallel to Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 6 and Angel Season 3.

One of the things I thought was kind of strange was that, after Buffy sacrificed herself during the Season 5 finale, a third slayer didn't show up.  I've heard several arguments as to why this was the case, the most popular being that the Slayer Line of Succession has moved onto Faith.  The problem with that argument is that Buffy and several other characters have spoken before as though Buffy's death will activate a new slayer.  In the end, I've decided that this might be a good opportunity for an original cast of characters to have their own (similar) adventures that take place in the same universe as BTVS and Angel.

Information about Croixville, Chartrain County

Croixville is a fictional town of unrealistic size and geography and contains many elements of a large city, so... pretty much like any other fictional small town from a TV Show.  Founded in the late 19th century, this unincorporated town has a population of approximately 150,000, several high schools including Croixville High, a College Campus (Penemue College), a Wolfram & Hart branch office building, and an elected sheriff.  It is located within the fictional Chartrain County and is within driving distance of Chartrain City, a major metropolitan area.

Feel free to add any additional details you can come up with about this town in your character's back story.

Available Roles:
The Third Slayer (Faith was 17 when she was activated, so it's possible for the Third Slayer to be 18 years old at the start of the game)
-The Fourth Slayer (this could get really ridiculous, but it's possible that Faith had a cardiac arrest while she was in her coma between BTVS Seasons 3 and 4)
-The Slayer's Watcher
-Other Watcher(s) (may or may not be hiding the existence of the Third Slayer)
-Vampires (may or may not have a soul/chip/whatever; Spyke's journey and Wo-Pang's ability proves there's many ways to en-soul a vampire)
-Slaypires (vampires with slayer abilities; yes, they exist in canon)
-Potential Slayers (Many potential slayers have been found and trained by watchers before they have been activated)
-Witches
-Demons
-Half-Demons (born or created)
-Humans (with or without special abilities)
-Anything else you can think of

We will be using the Buffy Revised and Angel Core Rule Books, which can be found at Drivethrurpg.com
If you don't have any of the books, you may find the Introductory Demo Kit (which includes an explanation of the rules and ready-to-play characters) at edenstudios.net/support.html

You may also find below several pre-generated ready-to-play characters for you to either play as is or to modify to your liking.  Also, feel free to ask the more experienced players to help you with character creation.

Ask first either through reply or PM if you want to use the Champion or Hero type for character creation.  I will no longer be accepting any more Champion or Hero types for now.

Investigators and White Hats may exchange up to 5 Drama Points for XP at a rate of 2 XP per 1 Drama Point.  In other words, if you trade in 3 Drama Points, you gain 6 XP for the purposes of improving your character.  Improving your character through XP, however, is a little different.

Raising an attribute point by one will cost 5 x new Attribute score.  So if you want to raise your strength from 2 to 3, for example, it'll cost 15 experience points.  Raising a skill point by one will cost 2 x new Skill score.  Learning a new skill (as in, raising it from 0 to 1) will cost 5 points.  Qualities cost the same as they do in experience points, but unless it's during character creation, you also have to role-play it out.  If you role-play really well, you may get the Quality for free.

I was thinking it'd be all free-form where you decide amongst yourselves beforehand how combat will end.  If you can't decide on who would win in a one-on-one, roll a 1d2.  Either that use either a butchered version of NWOD or All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

I heard that there's an RPG of Buffy and Angel, though.  Maybe I should try and track that one down... >_>

Sessha

There is a Buffy/Angel RPG out there Deathnote. Last time I checked I think you can find them at Drivethrurpg.com.

Deathnote

Thanks for the link, Sessha!  ^_^

Just had a look through the revised core rulebook.  Looks just like All Flesh Must Be Eaten, which I'm already somewhat familiar with.  It didn't mention anything about Demon or Half-Demon characters, though, so I looked through the Angel core rulebook as well and found that quality in that book.

Still, do you think it's a good idea to use that system?  I don't want the players to feel obligated to buy all the books before getting to play. ~_^

RubySlippers

How about a sorceress allied to the powers of light, a ceremonial mage sort?

Deathnote

I'm probably missing something here, but... I don't see why not?  :p

kckolbe

I'm thinking of an unofficial watcher type.  Also, I generally prefer systems, especially for games like this, where danger is an ongoing theme.

I have pretty much all the books on PDF that can be looked through. There was something that I wanted to run by you if I joined this game Deathnote.

Deathnote

Well, I wasn't planning on running a system-based game, but... the more I read through the books, the more I want to try it out.  I even ended up making a Demon package based on a character I once made for a Free-form Buffy game.  :p

Say, think it'd be alright to distribute the PDFs to everyone who doesn't have one?  ~_^

Sessha

I suppose I could do that but I'll need someplace to upload them. Oddly enough one of the concepts I was thinking about doing is a combination of stuff from the Angel Book and Buffy book Slayer's Handbook I believe it was. Also if you'd like my recomendation on the matter I would use the Angel character creation system. It offers far more open abilities than the Buffy creation system and is a bit more forgiving of characters.

Deathnote

Thanks, Sessha!  ^_^

I'm actually going to allow both Angel and Buffy books for this game.  I'll take your advice, though, and follow the Angel Character Creation System.  I haven't read through the whole thing for either books, so I didn't know there were any significant differences (besides the starting points for Character Types, but even then it says to give Buffy Character Types 5 extra Drama points so it'd still work out).

Sessha

The biggest difference between the two is in the tone. Buffy is definetly set for a much younger audience where as just like the show Angel is geared more towards Adults than teens. So the added character points and stat points reflect this overall gorwth. I also find most of the stuff in the angel book to be far more expansive than the Buffy book. Also having played the Angel system you can blow through five drama point pretty easily.

Looks like you lot need a rules refresher:

I don't mind buying the pdfs, personally.  I suppose if the majority of us own the rules, we can guide the rest through char creation.

Well there goes that idea DN. I'm not about to cross the Mods here. I enjoy my play time here too much to do that.

Well, crap.  I could've sworn I saw an exception for GMs distributing PDFs to their players on one of the online store's website.  Guess I remembered wrong.

Ooh!  I know!  Pre-generated characters!  I can recreate the ready-to-play characters and provide cliff-notes version of character creation in the Character Sheet Code I'll provide.  :p

They won't know exactly what each Quality, Drawback, or Skill does, but picking a choosing based on the names may give them the character that they have in mind.

So... we're down to only two people then?  Unless... Sessha, you're still interested, right?  Until we get more people, we could try a prequel of sorts and have it take place during the summer, before the intended game start.

Sessha

I am still interested yes. Though I'm debating how to build my character. I also had a couple of questions for you Deathnote namely just gm rulings. The Demon hunter package from the Angel book says that it can come with the drawback of all supernaturals are evil. Now everyone that I've played with has waved this drawback and I wanted to know if you were ok with that. Second off I wanted to ask if you had a problem with allow personally created drawbacks into the game? The last thing I wanted to ask you was if you could decide which character generation system you wanna go with. I can tell you from experence in both running the game and playing it, there is a difference in power level between Buffy and Angel.

Deathnote

I've mostly been looking at the Angel books, so I'm going to say that we'll be using the character generation system based on that book.  You can still use the Buffy books for their qualities and drawbacks, though (we're eventually going to need a Slayer, after all).  Also, I'm going to keep the option of making a White Hat open.  If what you say about the different in power level is true, then most players are going to choose the Investigator character type over White Hat, anyway.  Besides, to turn a White Hat into an Investigator, all you have to do is deduct 5 drama points and add 10 skill points.  If this is happening during the game, we'll just say that the character went through a Rocky-style training montage.  :p

If you want to create your own drawback, just clear it with me first (preferably via PM so it doesn't get lost in the posts).  I'll compare it to the official qualities and drawbacks before making my decision.  While not required, it'd also help if you could point out the official drawback that your custom one is most similar to.

Finally, I had a look at the Demon Hunter Quality and it looks like the drawback you're talking about is a part of the training package.  Honestly, a Mild Delusion about the Supernatural really doesn't seem all that bad.  The character's still playable and can still work in a cast full of witches and good demons.  Also, role-play opportunities!  ^_^  Still, I'm going to rule in the option of getting rid of the drawback by raising the Demon Hunter Quality by 1 point.  Most Demon Hunters (AKA NPCs) will have hang-ups about the supernatural.  That extra point cost will reflect your character's ability to keep an open mind in spite of what they've seen.

Btw, I'm not all that familiar with the rules yet, but I'm guessing that the drawbacks you get from Training Packages don't count towards your limit of 10 drawbacks during character creation?  Makes sense to me, anyway.  ~_^

Question for you, Sessha, since you've played this system before.  Are both Champion and Investigator types supposed to be allowed or is the GM supposed to limit the cast to only one type?  Have you played in a game that mixes both?  How did those games go?

Sessha

Thank you for the clarification on that one DN. As for your your question it's Champion and Vetran are playble characters. The different starting packages are a guideline for the power level of the game. I've always played using the Champion set-up. I find it offers a wide range of abilities for characters to play with and makes for more balanced characters. Also it may not seem like it but that difference in skill points makes a HUGE difference. I'll get that PM to you though soonest.

The way I saw it is that there would be a Champion or two and the rest would be White Hats/Investigators.  In Buffy, both Buffy and Spike would have been Champions.

I like the ruling for Demon Hunter.  The 1 point drawback is there largely for balance, so getting rid of it should raise the cost of the package.

Are Drama Points really that worthless?  Hmm... I'm considering allowing the option of both Champion and Hero types (Hero types get 5 extra Drama Points) alongside Investigators and White Hats.  Just to keep character options open.  ~_^

Ooh!  I know!  Hero types (+5 Drama Points) and Investigators!  Would that work?  Hero types have more Attribute and Quality Points, but Investigators have more Skill Points.  It would basically be as though Cordelia from Angel Season 1 went back in time and teamed up with Season 1 Buffy.  That's an accurate analogy, right?  :p

Edit: Scratch that.  It just occurred to me that a Hero Type could just grab Qualities that grant Skill Points to bring themselves up to an equivalent of 25 Skill Points.
