The question mark on my guy isn't needed I'll play a ranger and be one of our strikers.  :-)

Hikari

I'll play a second Defender, then.  Umm, you said no PHB3, right?  That leaves Fighter or Paladin, then.  I suppose since Swordmages are good at sticky-marking and vs. ranged I might want to try a Fighter for more of a melee defense specialist...

Sethala

There's also wardens in PHB2.  Might be anothee defender there, can't remember offhand.

Hikari

Just Warden.  So, uh...  Fighter or Paladin?

Revelation

Without divine power, I feel paladins are fairly weak. Wardens and Fighters are fairly strong defenders with their respective book though.

Black Howling

Sethala is Correct. The Warden is the only Defender in the PHB2. I happen to like it. But I agree Hikari, we could use some melee defense.

The thread is getting very disorganized on where the information needed is placed. I'll have the OOC and Character Sheet threads up soon to fix this, and organize everything to where it is easily found.

Apologies or not already having it done, but I spazzed when paying my bills and apparently decided Electricity wasn't needed. So I was unable to do anything this morning. As soon as I've caught up my things RL, I'll manage the threads.

I'll also be letting in the powers books, as I went on a spending spree on PDF's last night.  ::)

It's like any class, you just need to know how to use it. I for one can't use the fighter, and my chosen role is typically defender. Though give me the Paladin, and I rock even with just the PHB1

Revelation

With all power books, any defender would do, i'd say play what ya want!

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I love paladins :D My character in a monday 4e game is a paladin who rocks the house. There aren't really any weak classes in 4e either. But now, we have 2 defenders, 2 strikers, 1 leader, 1 controller, right? or am I miscounting?

Sethala

That would be correct.

Hikari, with two defenders in the group, I think it might be best if one of us focuses mostly on defense while the other takes up a more "offensive defense" (i.e. a fighter dual-wielding or 2-hander, instead of the classic sword and board).  I'll let you pick which you'd rather do, I can do either with swordmage.

Luna, I think the ranger can fill the role of trap-stopper, if that's what you're worried about...

And really, you'll buy all those PDFs but not pay your electric bill? :P

Revelation

If you are going assault swordmage, its best if the other defender goes more defender/'Passive' defense, though fighters by nature can do a godo chunk of damage. When I ran 4e, The groups shielding swordmage cockblocked a good chunk of my harder hitting enemies, so they can be great at the pure defender role.

What can I say? It just didn't seem that important when compared to Gaming until I realized the electricity was needed for it. >.>

Here is the OOC, and here is the Character Creation thread. Have at it. ;)

ZameRagues

As for handling the traps, I'm always the rogue in any 3.5 campaign I play in. I don't like the rogues in 4e so I play as a Ranger, however I still like being the handyman like the 3.5 rogues, so my ranger is more of a well armed rogue. Meaning I can take care of the traps, locks, and devices.

@Ershin: I think any background story is fine, as long as you don't try to use it to get extra bonuses (i.e. you still start at level 1 with 100g like the rest of us, your military training doesn't give you anything extra).  Coming up with a reason of why you left the army might be a good idea (were you just a mercenary they decided to not pay any more?  Was your term of service over?  Or were you disgraced and discharged for some reason?)

Why would I attempt to use a background to get bonuses (apart from the backgrounds in PHB2 and the Forgotten Realms books that give bonuses, but I've never really been comfortable using those, so...)? I was simply considering a reason as to why the character would join the party, in this case it would be a prior attachment to the cause at hand, particularly (if not part of the military) if she were to be part of the town's regular guards heeding the call to go forth and protect her people.

Mechanically, I'm still mulling between Bard and Warlord, slightly leaning towards the Bardic route.

{Fake Edit: Links to the character creation thread seem to have been posted while I was typing. Perhaps this is no longer the place for this post?}

Yes, OOC has been posted. Please resume discussion there.

Also, I might add before we carry over the conversation to the OOC that the only dumb question is the one that is not asked. I knew what you meant Ershin, and background bonuses arise strictly from the regional benefits in FR. :)
