Ah, how did I mess that up - of course, Toronto is in Canada not the US *slaps forehead*

I would quite happily swap the chance to get new games months before they come out over here (if they indeed come out at all... *looks at Xenogears and scowls*) in return for you getting to see the new Dr Who series.

I don't know why I even continue to watch it - probably out of morbid fascination at how much more of my childhood memories they can destroy with the lamest writing I have ever seen... And to think - give it a more mature place in the scheduling, give it a half decent budget, and the possibilities of what they could do are endless.

Better yet - give it to us, and let us all write a mature Dr Who... Think of the possibilities time and space travel would bring if the Tardis was in our hands... *cackles and rubs hands together*

Hmm, actually, that's not a bad idea...

Thats a brilliant idea.

Doctor Eros!!

We could all do cameo aliens?

TonyWoods

Aliens, cave men (and women), robots, genetic experiments gone hideously wrong (or right - I mean after all, someone somewhere must have got some right... right??)

I don't think there isn't a scenario you couldn't come up with...

Perhaps the Time Lords (and Ladies) that survived the Time War are in desperate need of replenishing their race whilst keeping hidden from the multitude of enemies they have amassed over the aeons - flitting from century to century in search of the perfect breeding stock, finding themselves embroiled in all sorts of intrigue (sexy intrigue of course, or just plain nasty intrigue - depending on what you are looking for)

*waits to get into trouble for hijacking the thread entirely*

Heh heh..speaking as one who has already gotten reamed out once for hijacking the thread.. and for being part of the old Doctor Who game on here that went south.. heh heh.. interesting ideas on both fronts :D

TonyWoods

Hehe thats ok - I'll take my punishment like a man as and when it comes... Or go and sulk in a corner somewhere...

Eithers good!

Ah, see I thought I'd seen a Dr Who game on here way back when I used to be a regular poster on Elliquiy - knew it was too good an idea not to have been picked up on before!

And finally, in a vain attempt to get this thread even partially back on track, I'm looking forward to playing the new Madden 07 game when its out here for the 360. Been put back two weeks over all the other platforms (guess it failed certification or something, as personally I would have thought EA would want to get it out before the torrent of 360 games about to be released over here... *shrugs*)

Tony you should try out Arcanum, great game :)

Oh I have - played it quite a lot when it first came out, got quite a way into it (up to the elven city if I remember correctly) and then my hard drive died a rather loud and spectacular death, leaving me with no great will to play through the entire game again to get back to the point I was at!

I love Troika games - pity they went bust, especially after making VtM:Bloodlines (damn publishers pushing devs to put out games before they are ready...*shakes fist in the air*). I think the haunted house level on Bloodlines is to date the most atmospheric level I've ever played in a game - I literally had the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end while playing my way through, knife equipped randomly slashing at the air in an attempt to make myself feel less of a fool for jumping out of my skin!

Still - a lot of the Troika guys went to Obsidian (and Bioware I think) so that can only be a good thing!

You just written the same things i wanted to write, TonyWoods!
Oh, and in Arcanum i got a bit farther. I was in Caladon and assasinated the king, then gone to photograph a vywern.
In VtM, the haunted house was glorious, but not the only glorious thing in the game.

Lirliel

VtM was great and indeed the Haunted House had me *WAAAAH!* going infront of my computer. Goddamn!

I finished Arcanum last night, god that last boss fight is like insane!

*grins at Celestial Goblin* Sorry for getting there before you had a chance to write it, I hate it when that happens to me!

I think the hardest boss fight I've had in any game was the fight right at the end of Fallout 2 - although I've a feeling that was more to do with the ineptness of my AI, and letting the big mutant guy keep his chain gun.

I think he hit me more times than he did anyone else...

Jup Mister Frank Harrigan.. S.O.B. indeed. Although the Master in Fallout 1 didn't die easily (well if you didn't nuke the fucker :P)

Fallout 1 & 2.

What brilliant concepts for a game. I wish someone would try and revamp that game.

I love the thought the character can do anything. Even star in his own porn film or become boxing champ.

TonyWoods

Bethesda Softworks (the guys n gals who did Oblivion) have the licence for Fallout 3, having acquired it a while ago, and they had Fallout 3 posters at this years E3 - so its a good bet that Fallout 3 is coming, its just a matter of when.

Personally, whilst I know I'll no doubt end up buying it, I'm very aprehensive as to how the game is going to turn out - as I've a feeling they will use the Oblivion engine and end up turning it into a very console-esque first person shooter/rpg cross rather than keeping true to its roots.

Not that a first person shooter/rpg cross can't be good - just take a look at Deus Ex 1 for example. But a first person shooter/rpg cross can also be bad when they 'dumb it down' - just take a look at Deus Ex 2 for example...

I might be alone in my thoughts though - personally I didn't like Oblivion at all, so that may very well be colouring my view of them having the licence!

one first person shooter/rpg/mmo cross is Planetside and the makers of pulled it off really well. But i will say there are not alot of FPS's that also have RPG elements.

Jester

System Shock 2 was the original and very very good at the time.

King_Furby

I don't really play tons of games anymore as life keeps you busy and it's so hard to find good ones.

Halo PC is probably one of the most joyful games i have ever played. It's amasing how some games are made it's like wow these people are really good. I also love some of the custom content players will make just because they love the game that much. They create their own vehicles, maps, guns you name it someone out there can do it. Some people really do have a talent for games..some of these players create things that you could swear it was done by a professional developer. Who would have thought a FPS could be so popular when you look back at games like DOOM and Duke Nukem that there was only a certain audience of people that were buying them. Now FPS games have really hit home..and there are alot of games that are good that just never hit the spotlite.

I get mad when there is all this hype about a game and you know you want to buy it. They release videos and only do you find out a few months later the game was cancled. They did that to Stargate Alliance which was going to the first FPS based on the stargate series that used to star Richard Dean Anderson. That game would have sold like hotcakes but the damn thing was shutdown due to some idiot somewhere up the command line. Thats the worst thing about FPS games alot of them get cancled for all sorts of reasons.

kasen03

My biggest grumble was about the game BC.  That game looked to be awesome..was so looking forward to it..and it was cancelled.

Fable was one of my bigger disappointments.  If it was released without the hype it would have been a decent enough RPG.. but when they were touting it as the RPG to end all RPG's.. you know when you have games like Morrowind which is TRUELY open ended and expansive..having all these little winding footpaths was such a disappointment.

King_Furby

The problem with alot of RPG's is they get dull and boreing after awhile. I have yet to see a true RPG that does not get dull after about a month of play. You need a game that is open ended but yet gives you direction of what to do next. I hate games where you have to kill the same creature over and over 1000 times just to gain a level. Some monster killing is okay but some games don't let you level up fast enough.

Take the Grandia games now those were the best crafted RPG's i have even seen. The games were a little playful not all about oh we got to kill this boss then that boss and save the world. Of course most RPG's you do save the world at the end just these games are a little different. The monsters are fun to fight, and best of all the first two were funny. Many RPG's lack humor and this game had plently of that.

This takes me back to Zelda on the super nintendo and how enjoyable that was. Nothing like wacking a chicken so many times it calls for help and then you die by a chicken gangbang lol. I had to have done that so many times with the volume all the way up that i could hear those clucks in my sleep.

If you can stomach ASCII(letter-based) graphics, you'll get just what you're asking from 'roguelike' games.
They're not interactive fiction games, no 'take sword, kill goblin' kind of commands. It's more like playing old Ultima's or Wasteland, but with a different world every time you begin.
I'd recommend ADOM(www.adom.de) to start with, but there are many worthy ones.

If you'll get put off by the graphics and interface of those games, keep in mind that in roguelikes you can...

...not discover half of the game's secrets in a year of playing, yet stil be suprised in every game.
...get polymorphed into monsters, drugged, die of hunger, kill a goblin and eat it.
...make iron rations out of the goblin
...make the goblin your undead servant
...build bridges
...summon daemons
...find artifacts that can destroy a whole race of monsters at once
...get mutated
...cut down a tree and use it as an improvised super-heavy club
...tame medusa, make her turn somebody into stone and use him as an improvised super-heavy club

And those games are also very hard:)

I am now currently just playing TA: Spring for the PC, and Disgaea 2 for the PS2.  I can still.. acquire any particular game that isnt massively multiplayer, if one would so desire my presence..

I looove ADOM. Is the one I started with even though Nethack and a couple of the other roguelike games seem to be more popular. But glad to see another fan :) Don't forget you can smash those statues to find wands.

King_Furby

Ever notice how popular stick figures are..especially in flash games. Well I found a new game i have been playing where you can play as a stick and really stick it to others in multiplayer.
