Hogwarts

Hey! Thank you for taking the opportunity to click this thread. Let me be the first person to say, we as a community of writers, would be thrilled to have you create a character for our story. I do understand joining what can be a "big game" can be intimidating but hopefully this thread will alleviate your fears and erase any reservations you might feel towards joining our small corner of E!

Who is this RP open to?

First, let's tackle that term: Big Game. Even though Hogwarts: A Future has its own forum, we are nothing more than a few handful of writers, dedicated to making the setting come to life. Hogwarts still acts very much like a boarding school. Everyone within this game is friendly and accepting of others. Diversity, whether if of race, religion, sexual orientation, or what have you, is not only encouraged but genuinely accepted within this game. All we really ask of a potential writer is to actively involve their characters within the story and respect their co-writers within the OOC. We prefer to leave all drama and chaos to our characters.

What is Hogwarts: A Future about anyway?

Hogwarts is a free-form sandbox type of story which takes place in rural Scotland; it is currently within the school year 2013-14. The story is centered around the characters’ day to day school life. Classes and other events (such as Halloween Costume Balls, the Christmas Yule Ball, and Twi-Wizard Events) are available for writers to participate in but they are not by any means mandatory. HAF is full of drama, humour, romance, and tension. Not only can students be occupied by daily school life but also their personal relationships with their peers and even their family can create many opportunities for interesting storylines and roleplay.

The world surrounding Hogwarts is not peaceful. Dementor sightings have occurred within the recent past while an actual attack happened at the previous World Quidditch Cup. Witches and Wizards are suspicious there is another threat hiding and growing within their midst.

That being said tensions are still high between purebloods and muggleborns despite the defeat of Voldemort

Types of characters you can play?

Uniquely, for this recruitment drive, writers have the opportunity to write not only Hogwarts characters but also Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students.

To fit the rules of Elliquiy, students do not start Hogwarts, Durmstrang, or Beauxbatons until they are 16 years of age. Before they attend one of the main three schools, the students learn theoretical lessons (meaning pure book learning rather than any usage of wands) in a primary school setting. For Hogwarts, their primary school is called Junior Wizarding Academy. For Durmstrang, their primary school is called Akademiya Iz Mladshiya Volshebnik (Academy of Junior Wizards) or AMV. For Beauxbatons, their primary school is called Institut de Magique Pour les Jeunes Magicien (Institute of Magic for Young Wizards). Students do not receive their wands until they graduate from their primary school and are ready to attend one of the “main three” schools as a first year.

  • What’s your character’s blood status?

    • If your character is a muggleborn, you have the easiest creation path. Hurrah!
    • If your character is half-blood, your character needs to have one half-blood or pureblood parent.
    • We have also created a new blood status called Magicborne! Magicbornes are the children of a muggleborn witch and wizard.
    • Mixed bloods and purebloods are NOT being accepted at this time.

  • Determine your character's age and house placement. Please reference the chart below to determine your character’s birthday.

Hometown: Taylor, Texas
Blood Status: Muggleborn

Appearance
Hair: Light Brown, kept short

Height: 5'10
Other Distinguishing Features (i.e. tattoos, piercings, scars, etc.): Marston is a fit young man with an athletic build. He has well defined shoulders and arms. His hands are rough and calloused from a lifetime of gripping reigns and doing chores back home. Marston moves with a leisurely sway to him (a mosey), adding in his natural confidence and a smile many ladies fawn over, its no surprise if he draws a little attention.  "Cattlebrand" H across his heart, Horseshoe around it, his father's name with the dob-dod inked inside of the horseshoe.
Located on his right arm and runs spreads to his pec and shoulder

A Little Deeper

Personality:

Adaptable - Growing up on the farm, Marston learned how adaptable a man had to be. If something broke you go on and fix it, if you don't know how to, well its time to learn how to. The guy at the hardware store was more than an occasional babysitter, he was a mentor of information when even his dad needed a few pointers on how to fix something. He may not be living on a ranch anymore, but Marston still holds onto the many values of his late father.

Versatile - Tied closely to his adaptability, Marston always found a
A wide variety of subjects interesting. He learned about farming, ranching, home repair and hunting. In school he loved playing all sports and enjoyed history.

Inconsistent - Marston finds lots of things interesting, unfortunately he is fickle and has been known to stop when he starts to lose interest. Marston falls into the "jack of all trades" category. The rodeo, guitar and singing are to hobbies he has stuck with over the years.

Enthusiastic - Eager to learn something new or try something out, Marston does not hesitate to set something aside to experience something he hasn't. When he was young he shuffled through sports every other season until he found a passion for baseball and football. This trait carried over into his school subjects, even if he prefers some more then others, autoshop always the top one.

Eloquent - There is a certain charm that many can't quite put their finger on. Marston is that boy you want to take to mama. He smiles, his Texan drawl and manners win over people easily, but he backs it up with a sharp wit (see below). It is no surprise that he always held vocal positions in sports, quarterback in football and pitcher in baseball. Marston is a charismatic young man and he uses it to his advantage.

Indecisive - Marston's inability to pick one thing over the other has resulted in a few setbacks. When he couldn't decide between Sally and Megan to take to the dance, he took both, but then both scorned ladies ditched him when he tried to kiss both. He lacks the ability to prioritize one thing over the other once in a while and he suffers the consequences because of it.

Witty - A little charm from his dad and a little wit from his mom makes for a deadly combination. The "aloofness" he carries himself in his stride, a little "false" obliviousness makes for fun surprises when Marston proves himself more than some "dumb cowboy/jock". Don't underestimate Marston, or you can if you want, he won't hold it against you.

Intellectual - Marston may never be a scholar, but he is eager to learn about new things. He will always favor the "hand's on" approach over "book learning", but he will give his full attention to each topic...until he finds something more interesting or a pretty girl flutters her eyelashes his way.

History:
Marston grew up in the small town of Taylor, Texas on a ranch. The only son of Abigail and Edgar (Sr.) Harlaw, the small family spent plenty of time tending the ranch and spending time together.

Edgar Sr. was the second-oldest of five siblings, (3 boys 2 girls - total) who inherited a dairy farm after their father retired to a comfortable living of ranching for fun, not for work. His mother grew up in England but left during the second wizard war. She was a muggle witch, a recent graduate from Hogwarts and she was afraid for her life. Being the only witch in her family, she found it easier to leave instead of endangering herself and her family.

Life was busy, but simple for Marston. He grew up around animals, loved to ride and followed his dad around the ranch like a duckling does its mama. Overtime, he learned a lot about ranch life, even when school was in the way. Life consisted of getting up early, doing chores, school and any activity or sport he was involved in. Saturdays were free time (after chores or any sporting event), it was the time he would go out with his friends or take a girl on a date. Sundays were for Sunday dinners at his grandparents house and time spent with all his cousins, or a roll in the hay with whatever girl was batting her eyelashes at him.

Over the course of his sophomore year (in High School), his father was diagnosed with a Brain Aneurysm after his constant migraines and dizzy spells got out of hand. Giving into his wife's pleading, he was checked out. Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the man (muggle nor magical). Edgar Sr suffered a stroke and his health deteriorated quickly in his final months. His family was there to support them, the man was loved greatly by all, but all they could do was comfort him as best they could before his passing. Marston's anguish manifested his powers the day of the wake, when he broke down and ran outside. All the windows on the side of the house shattered, but no one was there to see it happen nor really put thought into it, except his mother.

Despite the passing of his father, Marston managed to complete the (sophomore) year, even after being hit with more news. After the funeral and a few weeks before the summer break, he began receiving letters from owls, letters he initially ignored. His mother finally came to him and confessed what she was, the only other person to know (in the family) was her late husband.

Marston tossed himself hard into the work around the ranch, his mother feared the young man had not properly mourned his father. Unknown to her, this was his way of honoring and celebrating the man who raised him. The letters from the owls ceased, but on a weekend morning after a round of early chores, he walked up to the ranch home and found they had company, his mother's parents (his grandparents). Marston visited them back home (if it was safe) once a year or so, but they rarely came out to the US. Over a two week stay, the convinced the young man to give the wizard world a chance. Marston reluctantly agreed and Abigail sent an owl back to the original sender and accepted their invitation to Hogwarts.

Marston had one huge problem, he was a few years of magical school behind everyone else. Most of his summer was spent studying and doing his best to catch up. He has OWLS to take at the end of his first year and it determines whether he advanced to year 2 or repeats year 1.

Family:
Edgar Harlaw Sr - Muggle, Rancher, Business Owner, 46 (at time of death).
Edgar was a great father and better husband. Alongside his other siblings, he ran the family business (dairy farm) they inherited from their parents. A law student who passed the bar but put his plans on hold to help with the family business (mostly in law related stuff), he had plans to be a judge but life was better on the ranch.

Abigail Harlaw - Muggleblood, Homemaker, 35
Great mom and better wife, Abigail took care of her husband in his last days dutifully and was heartbroken when he passed. Abigail was born and raised in England and attended Hogwarts. She graduated just as the second wizard war was picking up traction and decided to leave the country. She was working as a shop owner when she met and married Edgar Sr. Many claimed it was to fast and Abigail was only after his money but she quickly won over the rest of the Harlaw family.

Connections: None atm.

Likes: Being a cowboy, pretty girls, playing the guitar, singing, dancing (country, rock, line), camping, sports, wood carving, riding horses, skirts (on those pretty girls), long hair (on those pretty girls), cowboy boots, cowboy hats, Country Music, Rock and roll music, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, barbeque, pecan pie, lemonade, poker and billiards.
Dislikes:Darts, Very loud music and strobe lights (most clubs), Tight jeans ("Common fella, no one wants to see that.") Trance/Dubstep music, Hunting for sport, People who "mess with Texas" (Seriously don't do it), dramatic people, people who look down at others.
Fears:  Marston has been scared of scorpions since the day one crawled into his boot when he and his father were camping when he was nine years old, has been scared of them since then.
He is afraid of hospitals and the scent of them, disinfection and death.
Marson worries about his mother back home and feels bad for leaving her while he is at school (guilt).
Worst Memory(ies):Watching his dad in his final days, witness a tower of a man deteriorate as death sapped everything that made him who he was. Smoking, drinking, rogue bulls, hunting, none of that killed Edgar Harlaw. A brain aneurysm, some fluke medical condition claimed the man. Marston knew his dad was in pain, but the man was to damn proud to let his loved ones see it.
Best Memory(ies): Winning the senior division (Ages 14-18) in the Jr. Rodeo at age 14 in the bull riding. The youngest winner to date, shattering his dad's own record by two years. He was presented with a large bull belt buckle with his name, the first of many buckles he had won, but that was the best one because it was a record breaker. The family went out to steak that night and his dad let him have his first beer. It tasted horrible and the taste never interested him after that, but the night was unforgettable.
Favorite Animal(s)Horses, Lizards, Armadillos, Coyotes, Wolves, Bulls, Eagles and Falcons.
Favorite Color(s) Red, Black
O/O's:
Marston is young and at a point he is exploring what he likes sexually. Sex at his age is all good (for the most part). He has the two go to positions but has been playing around and knows he has a thing for legs wrapped around his waist to clutching his sides. Kissing, hugging, a little scratches on his back is always good. A knack for pulling hair and he does not think twice to swat a lady on the behind. Blowjobs are the tits and he will repay the favor, he gets handsy, grabs and squeezes sometimes a little to much, but can you blame him? Marston loves giving hickeys or leaving a bite mark on his lovers, as if it is a brand. He shows signs of being dominant (but at this point in life is it really all that "real"). He works hard, he plays hard and he won't dismount until both parties are sweating and panting for air.

He is not into guys, but would not shoot down a threesome with another guy. Most of his offs are still forming, if he doesn't like it, he will tell you. (besides the hard no's scat/toilet play)

A Little Deeper

Personality:

Ambitious, obsessive, intelligent, cold, delusional, commitment-phobe

Mischa is an ambitious young woman. She has grand plans when it comes to the state of the wizarding world and hopes to use her knowledge to make things better for witches and wizards everywhere. She sets lofty goals for herself but she works incredibly hard to achieve them. Failure is not an option. She tends to be a bit obsessive. When she wants something she will pursue it, not resting until she gets it. It consumes her thoughts, and even her dreams. She is extremely intelligent, some have even called her a genius. She has done extensive research and written papers (that she keeps to herself) on different forms of magic. Not to mention research into different magical weapons, drawing inspiration from some muggle weapons and their mechanics. Mischa can appear cruel to some but that is not the case. She would never describe herself as a cruel person, in fact she is the opposite. She cares deeply about the magical community, yes she may not be one to coddle people but she has their best interests in mind. She is very passionate about the things she cares about, which are few and far between. She’s a workaholic. She doesn't understand the whole idea of students partying or playing games. She is here to learn and as such will work hard on her studies and her personal research. Mischa makes it a point to never engage in serious relationships. They are simply an unwelcome distraction.

History:

Mischa had a harsh childhood. Her mother had been a useless drunk. A woman who would rather piss away her husband’s money then take care of her young daughter. Her father wasn't perfect either. No he was worse, but Mischa never saw him like that. She idolizes her father. To her he was a brilliant man, to be revered and respected. Her father worked for the Department of Mysteries. At home he did his own personal research performing dark and strange experiments all in the name of broadening his magical knowledge, to discover more about their craft. He taught his daughter everything he knew. Mischa’s father taught her everything he knew, fostering a love of research and dark magic in his daughter. At around the age of 7, Mischa began experimenting on small animals. Her father warned her to keep her experiments secret. Others in the magical world would not understand her brilliance and the motivations behind her research. Her mother was too drunk to realize that her daughter was being corrupted, brainwashed.

When Mischa was thirteen she got into an altercation with her mother. She came home to find her mother passed out drunk on the balcony. She threw cold water on her, telling her to get up and stop embarrassing herself. Her mother hit her. The two began to fight and Mischa pushed her off the balcony. Her father came home to find a clearly disturbed Mischa. The girl was roughed up and close to tears. Her father consoled her, telling her that it was okay. The death was an accident. He knew the truth but he never held it against her. The marriage had turned sour long ago. The only thing on his mind was that he protect his child. The authorities were told it was an accident and they believed him. How could a thirteen year old girl kill her own mother? Mischa was shaken, disturbed by her feelings of relief. She had cried not because of losing her mother, but because she feared that she had enjoyed it.

Another one of her idols growing up was Gellert Grindelwald. Mischa did extensive research on the man, trying her best to track down manifestos he had written. She could recite his entire history if she wanted to. Grindelwald was her biggest role model, the second being her father.

When Mischa was 15 her father was arrested and put in jail. It had been discovered that he had been doing twisted experiments. She remembered the day clearly. Hit wizards stormed the house. They made her stand in the corner of the living room watching her closely as they dragged her father away. She screamed, demanding to know what was happening, where were they taking him. Nothing, they ignored her. Later on a woman from the Ministry came to speak with her. Her father had arranged for someone to take care of her. Apparently he had known that something like this might happen and done the necessary preparations. The year before she went to Durmstrang was the most miserable of her life. She came home to an empty house every day, no one there but a caretaker. She wrote letters to her father almost every day. He had been given a life sentence. The news had been a blow to Mischa. She would never see her father again. She was inconsolable. Eventually she could get through the day without crying but still she felt that pain. The sadness soon turned to anger. She would get her revenge. One day she and her father would be reunited.

After the year she had, had she was more than thrilled to be going to Durmstrang, the very school Grindelwald had gone to. To walk through the same hallways as he had. During her first year she was able to track down some of the books he had read in the library. She cherished these volumes, her hands caressing the leather covers. She couldn’t believe she was touching the same books that his revered hands had touched. She was almost moved to tears.

Her greatest ambition, her greatest dream after freeing her father is to continue Grindelwald’s work, to follow in his footsteps and carry the mantle. Voldemort was a coward, an idiot. He had killed the beloved Grindelwald, robbed them of the greatest wizard of all time. His pureblood nonsense was a waste of time. Magicfolk; pureblood, haflblood, magicborn, muggleborn, they all needed to unite as a people, under one banner to become the rulers of this world, like they were destined.

  • Where does your student come from geographically?

    • Students usually hail from France. However, students of exceptional talent will be recruited from other European nations.

  • What House is your character in?

    • There are three houses in Beauxbatons: Modildi, Cixilo, and Isilo. Please view corresponding traits to determine which house best fits your character concept.
    • Modildi: The particular traits of students sorted into this house are resilient, clever, and adaptable. These students are not necessarily unsettled by the necessity of change. Instead, they embrace it. The emblematic animal is the stone marten, and its colors are grey and blue.
    • Cixilo: The particular traits of students sorted into this house are adventurous, cunning, and loyal. These students are usually energetic and prone to more mischief than others from time to time. They are also the type to hold grudges for long periods of time.
    • Isilo: The particular traits of students sorted into this house are peaceful, hospitable, and brave. These students are usually the first of the bunch to volunteer for potential dangerous ventures and consequently end up in  more than they barter for. Despite this, they are a cheerful bunch and are usually highly sociable. The emblematic animal is the Genette, and its colors are grey and green.

  • What program is your character in?

    • In addition to their general studies (Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, and such), students are required to choose a program in which they will learn more specialized skills and magic within the field.
    • Options include Music, Drama, Fine Arts, and etc. (Full list and details of each program are found here.)

A Little Deeper

Personality: Like all people Natalya has equally good and bad traits. She is arrogant, being told from a young age that she was special because of her vocal talents. Not only was she born with talent but also her beauty (commented on by all who met her from a young age) has given her an inflated ego. She is not malicious but she truly believes that she is God’s gift to the world.

Natalya can be sweet but often offends people with her misguided attempts at ‘helping them’. How was she to know that the girl had dressed like that on purpose?

Although she is a pureblood from an old and well-established family, Natalya has never had anything against muggleborns. In her opinion it might be more difficult for them to have actual magical talent without eons of magical blood coursing through their veins but there are always exceptions. She thinks it is tasteless to bully someone for being a muggleborn. This does not mean that Natalya is not a bully. She has been known to belittle those who she perceives to be either talentless or unintelligent. Her snide remarks and little jabs have caused quite a bit of heartache for some, with one girl even quitting the music program at Beauxbatons.

Natalya is hard worker. She spends hours honing her voice (voice claim: Magdalena Kožená) and always tries her best to get her homework out of the way so that she can focus on her music training. She recently broke up with her boyfriend due to this tendency of hers. He had complained to her that she was too focused on her music and so she cut him loose. How could he, he being a violinist? She had no respect or time for someone who thought so little of honing his craft.

Reason why chosen to come to TWT?

Natalya is a straight A student. She works very hard on her other classes and puts in hours of extra time on her vocal training. A very gifted singer she is well known in the music program, especially among the music program's faculty. Her vocal talents and her work ethic have permitted her to go to the Triwizard tournament.

History:

Natalya grew up in the Volkov Keep along with the rest of her family. That was they way they had always done things. Of course her family had their own section of the castle.

She is her parents’ first child. They were happy for her arrival despite the fact that she wasn’t a boy. Natalya and her cousin Aleksie are only a year apart. Growing up in the same household the two were inseparable, often playing pranks on the unsuspecting staff and house elves. Not long afterwards Nikolai and Tatiana joined the duo and the four were always together.

Natalya discovered her vocal capabilities at the young age of three. Her nanny was chasing her down and trying to put her to bed. Her mother was away dealing with some family issues (she didn’t know at the time that her mother was visiting her family in England dealing with the death of her brother and her sister in law) and Natalya refused to go to bed unless her mother read her a bedtime story. The nanny tried in vain to tell her that ‘mommy was away’. Cornered Natalya screamed at the top of her lungs. All the house lamps in the hallway broke, her scream shattering the glass. At that point her great-grandmother sent the nanny away, putting the child to bed herself.

It was then that they family discovered that Natalya had inherited her great-great-grandmother Anya’s vocal powers. And so her training begun. Originally a private tutor had taught Natalya along with her cousins but now she was separated from them and put in lessons of her own, ones that focused more on building her vocal range and power. As she got a bit older it was clear that Natalya was a born opera singer, a soprano. She was taught French, Italian and German so that she could understand the great operas, both magical and muggle. Her parents decided it would be best that she be sent to Beauxbatons like her great-great-grandmother instead of Durmstrang like the rest of her family members.

At age eleven Natalya was sent to France along with a caretaker. Sad to be separated from her homeland and the family she had grown up with, she threw herself into her studies. Her and her cousins kept in touch by writing letters and they always went back home for holidays.

She trained for her entire life so that she could become the best opera singer the world had ever known. Of course she also trained her voice for its magical abilities.

While she was away her cousin Galya was born. Everyone said that she was a spitting image of Natalya. As Galya got older she began to look more and more like the pictures of Natalya from her childhood years. Natalya loved her little Galya and often called her, her little twin. She was deeply saddened by Galya’s sudden death a cried for weeks. Her cousin Nikolai took it the hardest, feeling personally responsible for her death. Natalya worries for her cousin, who is still shaken by his young sister’s death.

Academic Strengths: Music, Charms, Equestrian Studies, Transfiguration
Academic Weakness: Horticultural and medicinal magic, DADA
Fears: Vocal cord nodules/polyps (“they sit on your windpipe and they crush your dreams”), the dark, failure, not achieving her lifelong dream of being a professional opera singer

Build A Wand!

There are three easy steps to creating a wand: Choose a Length, Pick a Wood, and Choose a Core.

Choose a Length

Many wandmakers simply match the wand length to the size of the witch or wizard who will use it, but this is a crude measure, and fails to take into account many other, important considerations. In my experience, longer wands might suit taller wizards, but they tend to be drawn to bigger personalities, and those of a more spacious and dramatic style of magic. Neater wands favour more elegant and refined spell-casting. However, no single aspect of wand composition should be considered in isolation of all the others, and the type of wood, the core and the flexibility may either counterbalance or enhance the attributes of the wand’s length.

Most wands will be in the range of between nine and fourteen inches. While I have sold extremely short wands (eight inches and under) and very long wands (over fifteen inches), these are exceptionally rare. In the latter case, a physical peculiarity demanded the excessive wand length. However, abnormally short wands usually select those in whose character something is lacking, rather than because they are physically undersized (many small witches and wizards are chosen by longer wands).

Wand flexibility or rigidity denotes the degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair - although, again, this factor ought not to be considered separately from the wand wood, core and length, nor of the owner’s life experience and style of magic, all of which will combine to make the wand in question unique.

Pick a Wood!

Woods
Every single wand is unique and will depend for its character on the particular tree and magical creature from which it derives its materials. Moreover, each wand, from the moment it finds its ideal owner, will begin to learn from and teach its human partner. Therefore, the following must be seen as general notes on each of the wood types I like to work with best, and ought not to be taken to describe any individual wand.

Only a minority of trees can produce wand quality wood (just as a minority of humans can produce magic). It takes years of experience to tell which ones have the gift, although the job is made easier if Bowtruckles are found nesting in the leaves, as they never inhabit mundane trees. The following notes on various wand woods should be regarded very much as a starting point, for this is the study of a lifetime, and I continue to learn with every wand I make and match.

Acacia

A very unusual wand wood, which I have found creates tricky wands that often refuse to produce magic for any but their owner, and also withhold their best effects from all but those most gifted. This sensitivity renders them difficult to place, and I keep only a small stock for those witches or wizards of sufficient subtlety, for acacia is not suited to what is commonly known as ‘bangs-and-smells’ magic. When well-matched, an acacia wand matches any for power, though it is often underrated due to the peculiarity of its temperament.

Alder

Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable. Whereas most wand woods seek similarity in the characters of those they will best serve, alder is unusual in that it seems to desire a nature that is, if not precisely opposite to its own, then certainly of a markedly different type. When an alder wand is happily placed, it becomes a magnificent, loyal helpmate. Of all wand types, alder is best suited to non-verbal spell work, whence comes its reputation for being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards.

Apple

Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood.

Ash

The ash wand cleaves to its one true master and ought not to be passed on or gifted from the original owner, because it will lose power and skill. This tendency is extreme if the core is of unicorn. Old superstitions regarding wands rarely bear close examination, but I find that the old rhyme regarding rowan, chestnut, ash and hazel wands (rowan gossips, chestnut drones, ash is stubborn, hazel moans) contains a small nugget of truth. Those witches and wizards best suited to ash wands are not, in my experience, lightly swayed from their beliefs or purposes. However, the brash or over-confident witch or wizard, who often insists on trying wands of this prestigious wood, will be disappointed by its effects. The ideal owner may be stubborn, and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant.

Aspen

Wand-quality aspen wood is white and fine-grained, and highly prized by all wand-makers for its stylish resemblance to ivory and its usually outstanding charmwork. The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. An infamous and secretive eighteenth-century duelling club, which called itself The Silver Spears, was reputed to admit only those who owned aspen wands. In my experience, aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders; this is a wand for revolutionaries.

Beech

The true match for a beech wand will be, if young, wise beyond his or her years, and if full-grown, rich in understanding and experience. Beech wands perform very weakly for the narrow-minded and intolerant. Such wizards and witches, having obtained a beech wand without having been suitably matched (yet coveting this most desirable, richly hued and highly prized wand wood), have often presented themselves at the homes of learned wandmakers such as myself, demanding to know the reason for their handsome wand’s lack of power. When properly matched, the beech wand is capable of a subtlety and artistry rarely seen in any other wood, hence its lustrous reputation.

Blackthorn

Blackthorn, which is a very unusual wand wood, has the reputation, in my view well-merited, of being best suited to a warrior. This does not necessarily mean that its owner practises the Dark Arts (although it is undeniable that those who do so will enjoy the blackthorn wand’s prodigious power); one finds blackthorn wands among the Aurors as well as among the denizens of Azkaban. It is a curious feature of the blackthorn bush, which sports wicked thorns, that it produces its sweetest berries after the hardest frosts, and the wands made from this wood appear to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand will become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.

Black Walnut

Less common than the standard walnut wand, that of black walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight. Black walnut is a very handsome wood, but not the easiest to master. It has one pronounced quirk, which is that it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict, and loses power dramatically if its possessor practises any form of self-deception. If the witch or wizard is unable or unwilling to be honest with themselves or others, the wand often fails to perform adequately and must be matched with a new owner if it is to regain its former prowess. Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, however, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all, with a particular flair in all kinds of charmwork.

Cedar

Whenever I meet one who carries a cedar wand, I find strength of character and unusual loyalty. My father, Gervaise Ollivander, used always to say, ‘you will never fool the cedar carrier,’ and I agree: the cedar wand finds its perfect home where there is perspicacity and perception. I would go further than my father, however, in saying that I have never yet met the owner of a cedar wand whom I would care to cross, especially if harm is done to those of whom they are fond. The witch or wizard who is well-matched with cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them.

Cherry

This very rare wand wood creates a wand of strange power, most highly prized by the wizarding students of the school of Mahoutokoro in Japan, where those who own cherry wands have special prestige. The Western wand-purchaser should dispel from their minds any notion that the pink blossom of the living tree makes for a frivolous or merely ornamental wand, for cherry wood often makes a wand that possesses truly lethal power, whatever the core, but if teamed with dragon heartstring, the wand ought never to be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind.

Chestnut

This is a most curious, multi-faceted wood, which varies greatly in its character depending on the wand core, and takes a great deal of colour from the personality that possesses it. The wand of chestnut is attracted to witches and wizards who are skilled tamers of magical beasts, those who possess great gifts in Herbology, and those who are natural fliers. However, when paired with dragon heartstring, it may find its best match among those who are overfond of luxury and material things, and less scrupulous than they should be about how they are obtained. Conversely, three successive heads of the Wizengamot have possessed chestnut and unicorn wands, for this combination shows a predilection for those concerned with all manner of justice.

Cypress

Cypress wands are associated with nobility. The great medieval wandmaker, Geraint Ollivander, wrote that he was always honoured to match a cypress wand, for he knew he was meeting a witch or wizard who would die a heroic death. Fortunately, in these less blood-thirsty times, the possessors of cypress wands are rarely called upon to lay down their lives, though doubtless many of them would do so if required. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures.

Dogwood

Dogwood is one of my own personal favourites, and I have found that matching a dogwood wand with its ideal owner is always entertaining. Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy.

Ebony

This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider, ebony wand owners have been found both among the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and among the Death Eaters. In my experience the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.

Elder

The rarest wand wood of all, and reputed to be deeply unlucky, the elder wand is trickier to master than any other. It contains powerful magic, but scorns to remain with any owner who is not the superior of his or her company; it takes a remarkable wizard to keep the elder wand for any length of time. The old superstition, ‘wand of elder, never prosper,’ has its basis in this fear of the wand, but in fact, the superstition is baseless, and those foolish wandmakers who refuse to work with elder do so more because they doubt they will be able to sell their products than from fear of working with this wood. The truth is that only a highly unusual person will find their perfect match in elder, and on the rare occasion when such a pairing occurs, I take it as certain that the witch or wizard in question is marked out for a special destiny. An additional fact that I have unearthed during my long years of study is that the owners of elder wands almost always feel a powerful affinity with those chosen by rowan.

Elm

The unfounded belief that only pure-bloods can produce magic from elm wands was undoubtedly started by some elm wand owner seeking to prove his own blood credentials, for I have known perfect matches of elm wands who are Muggle-borns. The truth is that elm wands prefer owners with presence, magical dexterity and a certain native dignity. Of all wand woods, elm, in my experience, produces the fewest accidents, the least foolish errors, and the most elegant charms and spells; these are sophisticated wands, capable of highly advanced magic in the right hands (which, again, makes it highly desirable to those who espouse the pure-blood philosophy).

English Oak

A wand for good times and bad, this is a friend as loyal as the wizard who deserves it. Wands of English oak demand partners of strength, courage and fidelity. Less well-known is the propensity for owners of English oak wands to have powerful intuition, and, often, an affinity with the magic of the natural world, with the creatures and plants that are necessary to wizardkind for both magic and pleasure. The oak tree is called King of the Forest from the winter solstice up until the summer solstice, and its wood should only be collected during that time (holly becomes King as the days begin to shorten again, and so holly should only be gathered as the year wanes. This divide is believed to be the origin of the old superstition, “when his wand’s oak and hers is holly, then to marry would be folly,” a superstition that I have found baseless). It is said that Merlin’s wand was of English oak (though his grave has never been found, so this cannot be proven).

Fir

My august grandfather, Gerbold Octavius Ollivander, always called wands of this wood ‘the survivor’s wand,’ because he had sold it to three wizards who subsequently passed through mortal peril unscathed. There is no doubt that this wood, coming as it does from the most resilient of trees, produces wands that demand staying power and strength of purpose in their true owners, and that they are poor tools in the hands of the changeable and indecisive. Fir wands are particularly suited to Transfiguration, and favour owners of focused, strong-minded and, occasionally, intimidating demeanour.

Hawthorn

The wandmaker Gregorovitch wrote that hawthorn ‘makes a strange, contradictory wand, as full of paradoxes as the tree that gave it birth, whose leaves and blossoms heal, and yet whose cut branches smell of death.’ While I disagree with many of Gregorovitch’s conclusions, we concur about hawthorn wands, which are complex and intriguing in their natures, just like the owners who best suit them. Hawthorn wands may be particularly suited to healing magic, but they are also adept at curses, and I have generally observed that the hawthorn wand seems most at home with a conflicted nature, or with a witch or wizard passing through a period of turmoil. Hawthorn is not easy to master, however, and I would only ever consider placing a hawthorn wand in the hands of a witch or wizard of proven talent, or the consequences might be dangerous. Hawthorn wands have a notable peculiarity: their spells can, when badly handled, backfire.

Hazel

A sensitive wand, hazel often reflects its owner’s emotional state, and works best for a master who understands and can manage their own feelings. Others should be very careful handling a hazel wand if its owner has recently lost their temper, or suffered a serious disappointment, because the wand will absorb such energy and discharge it unpredictably. The positive aspect of a hazel wand more than makes up for such minor discomforts, however, for it is capable of outstanding magic in the hands of the skillful, and is so devoted to its owner that it often ‘wilts’ (which is to say, it expels all its magic and refuses to perform, often necessitating the extraction of the core and its insertion into another casing, if the wand is still required) at the end of its master’s life (if the core is unicorn hair, however, there is no hope; the wand will almost certainly have ‘died’). Hazel wands also have the unique ability to detect water underground, and will emit silvery, tear-shaped puffs of smoke if passing over concealed springs and wells.

Holly

Holly is one of the rarer kinds of wand woods; traditionally considered protective, it works most happily for those who may need help overcoming a tendency to anger and impetuosity. At the same time, holly wands often choose owners who are engaged in some dangerous and often spiritual quest. Holly is one of those woods that varies most dramatically in performance depending on the wand core, and it is a notoriously difficult wood to team with phoenix feather, as the wood’s volatility conflicts strangely with the phoenix’s detachment. In the unusual event of such a pairing finding its ideal match, however, nothing and nobody should stand in their way.

Hornbeam

My own wand is made of hornbeam, and so it is with all due modesty that I state that hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term ‘vision’), which will almost always be realised. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, and will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts - whether for good or ill - that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand.

Larch

Strong, durable and warm in colour, larch has long been valued as an attractive and powerful wand wood. Its reputation for instilling courage and confidence in the user has ensured that demand has always outstripped supply. This much sought-after wand is, however, hard to please in the matter of ideal owners, and trickier to handle than many imagine. I find that it always creates wands of hidden talents and unexpected effects, which likewise describes the master who deserves it. It is often the case that the witch or wizard who belongs to the larch wand may never realise the full extent of their considerable talents until paired with it, but that they will then make an exceptional match.

Laurel

It is said that a laurel wand cannot perform a dishonourable act, although in the quest for glory (a not uncommon goal for those best suited to these wands), I have known laurel wands perform powerful and sometimes lethal magic. Laurel wands are sometimes called fickle, but this is unfair. The laurel wand seems unable to tolerate laziness in a possessor, and it is in such conditions that it is most easily and willingly won away. Otherwise, it will cleave happily to its first match forever, and indeed has the unusual and engaging attribute of issuing a spontaneous lightning strike if another witch or wizard attempts to steal it.

Maple

I have often found that those chosen by maple wands are by nature travellers and explorers; they are not stay-at-home wands, and prefer ambition in their witch or wizard, otherwise their magic grows heavy and lacklustre. Fresh challenges and regular changes of scene cause this wand to literally shine, burnishing itself as it grows, with its partner, in ability and status. This is a beautiful and desirable wood, and wand quality maple has been among the most costly for centuries. Possession of a maple wand has long been a mark of status, because of its reputation as the wand of high achievers.

Pear

This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use.

Pine

The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoy being used creatively, and unlike some others, will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells. Many wandmakers insist that pine wands are able to detect, and perform best for, owners who are destined for long lives, and I can confirm this in as much as I have never personally known the master of a pine wand to die young. The pine wand is one of those that is most sensitive to non-verbal magic.

Poplar

“If you seek integrity, search first among the poplars,” was a great maxim of my grandfather, Gerbold Ollivander, and my own experience of poplar wands and their owners tallies exactly with his. Here is a wand to rely upon, of consistency, strength and uniform power, always happiest when working with a witch or wizard of clear moral vision. There is a tired old joke among lesser wandmakers that no poplar wand has ever chosen a politician, but here they show their lamentable ignorance: two of the Ministry’s most accomplished Ministers for Magic, Eldritch Diggory and Evangeline Orpington, were the possessors of fine, Ollivander-made poplar wands.

Red Oak

You will often hear the ignorant say that red oak is an infallible sign of its owner’s hot temper. In fact, the true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Less common than English oak, I have found that its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, often the creator of distinctive, trademark spells, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight. Red oak wands are, in my opinion, among the most handsome.

Redwood

Wand-quality redwood is in short supply, yet constant demand, due to its reputation for bringing good fortune to its owner. As is usually the case with wandlore, the general populace have the truth back to front: redwood wands are not themselves lucky, but are strongly attracted to witches and wizards who already possess the admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, to snatch advantage from catastrophe. The combination of such a witch or wizard with a redwood wand is always intriguing, and I generally expect to hear of exciting exploits when I send this special pairing out from my workshop.

Rowan

Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no Dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone - these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels.

Silver lime

This unusual and highly attractive wand wood was greatly in vogue in the nineteenth century. Demand outstripped supply, and unscrupulous wandmakers dyed substandard woods in an effort to fool purchasers into believing that they had purchased silver lime. The reasons for these wands’ desirability lay not only in their unusually handsome appearance, but also because they had a reputation for performing best for Seers and those skilled in Legilimency, mysterious arts both, which consequently gave the possessor of a silver lime wand considerable status. When demand was at its height, wandmaker Arturo Cephalopos claimed that the association between silver lime and clairvoyance was ‘a falsehood circulated by merchants like Gerbold Ollivander (my own grandfather), who have overstocked their workshops with silver lime and hope to shift their surplus.’ But Cephalopos was a slipshod wandmaker and an ignoramus, and nobody, Seer or not, was surprised when he went out of business.

Spruce

Unskilled wandmakers call spruce a difficult wood, but in doing so they reveal their own ineptitude. It is quite true that it requires particular deftness to work with spruce, which produces wands that are ill-matched with cautious or nervous natures, and become positively dangerous in fumbling fingers. The spruce wand requires a firm hand, because it often appears to have its own ideas about what magic it ought to be called upon to produce. However, when a spruce wand meets its match - which, in my experience, is a bold spell-caster with a good sense of humour - it becomes a superb helper, intensely loyal to their owners and capable of producing particularly flamboyant and dramatic effects.

Sycamore

The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become ‘bored,’ and many witches and wizards, settling down into middle age, are disconcerted to find their trusty wand bursting into flame in their hand as they ask it, one more time, to fetch their slippers. As may be deduced, the sycamore’s ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world’s most highly-prized wand woods.

Vine

The druids considered anything with a woody stem as a tree, and vine makes wands of such a special nature that I have been happy to continue their ancient tradition. Vine wands are among the less common types, and I have been intrigued to notice that their owners are nearly always those witches or wizards who seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best. Vine wands seem strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and I have found them more sensitive than any other when it comes to instantly detecting a prospective match. Reliable sources claim that these wands can emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner, and I have twice observed the phenomenon in my own shop.

Walnut

Highly intelligent witches and wizards ought to be offered a walnut wand for trial first, because in nine cases out of ten, the two will find in each other their ideal mate. Walnut wands are often found in the hands of magical innovators and inventors; this is a handsome wood possessed of unusual versatility and adaptability. A note of caution, however: while some woods are difficult to dominate, and may resist the performance of spells that are foreign to their natures, the walnut wand will, once subjugated, perform any task its owner desires, provided that the user is of sufficient brilliance. This makes for a truly lethal weapon in the hands of a witch or wizard of no conscience, for the wand and the wizard may feed from each other in a particularly unhealthy manner.

Willow

Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow.

Choose a Core!

Cores

  • Demiguise Hair – Only the best for Transfiguration.
  • Hippogriff Talon – Excellent for Charm Work.
  • Runespoor Fang – Best for those who deal with Dark Magic.
  • Chimaera Scale – Very rare, yet very powerful.
  • Ashwinder Ash – Casts the best protection charms.
  • Dragon - As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.
  • Billywig Stinger- Exceptionally good when working levitation charms. The only drawback to this core is that it is somewhat unstable, given the volatile nature of the insect that provides it. Also useful when dealing with emotional healing.
  • Chimaera Hair (from mane)- Hair from a Chimaera's Mane is a good core for spells that involve fire. This core may choose someone who is adventurous, noble, and/or a parselmouth.
  • Cockatrice feather- This core works well with spells related to the fire element, due to the fact that the cockatrice is a cross between a roster and a dragon. It's also good for most charm work.
  • Crup Hair- This core is good for counter curses, and spells to speed something up. The core "Crup Hairs" prefers someone who is constantly in motion, someone who is strong, and/or someone who never gives up easily.
  • Demiguise hair- The hair of a demiguise is long and silky, and good at charms involving invisibility, and transfiguration. It is very dependable and long lasting, and can heal very well.
  • Diricawl feather- A very queer core, feather of the diricawl (muggle 'dodo') is sometimes very powerful but sometimes very feeble and ineffective. It's most persistently powerful in stunning and petrifying. Diricawl feathers are rarely used as wand cores, and attracted to unusual people.
  • Golem dust- Remnants of a real live (well, sort of) golem reputed to have been fashioned by Rabbi Yaakov of Prague in the 13th century. Exceptionally good for use in charms worked on inanimate objects.
  • Hippocampus scale- Good with water-related spells, and can perform spells to destroy evil underwater creatures. It makes a good wand for care of animals and gardening work, as it is harmonious with almost all un-human creatures.
  • Hippogriff feather- Hippogriff feathers make powerful wand cores and can perform almost all kinds of magic well. They excel in transfiguration and levitation especially, and are very common in European wands.
  • Jarvey feather- A valuable wand core, the Jarvey feather is good at all simple spells and many advanced ones. It is most effective when used to bewitch an object or an animal, but is also used to organize things and to clean dishes.
  • Jobberknoll feather- Jobberknoll feathers are good wand cores for charms, advancing along with its owner through time. It is also used in simple cooking spells and transfiguration.
  • Manticore hair- A core that is used for producing a protection (a shield to protect someone/something from any spells or charms, except the Killing Curse) is Manticore hair. Any wand that has this core may choose someone who is brave, loyal, strong, and fierce.
  • Phoenix feather- The phoenix feather represents power and strength in a wizard, which is why her wand is one of the most powerful of all. It improves the effectiveness of spells with time and practice, and can be used to do great things, good or evil.
  • Pogrebin hair- Pogrebin hairs carry lots of power and are good for work with transfiguration and work with the earth element. They are effective in most advanced spells, but are best when in used in the dark arts.
  • Puffskein fur- The fur of a puffskein is a good wand core for love spells and spells related to music, as the puffskein itself is known for making pleasant noises.
  • Selkie whisker- particularly useful when working with the element of water in any form. Given the selkie's gift of transfiguration this wand core is favoured by animagi.
  • Unicorn- Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

The Wonderful World of Purebloods

If you are taking on the task of creating a pureblood character then your character must have an extensive family background. This can be made much easier by connecting your character to already established pureblood family trees. You will find these trees below including their countries of origin and the writers that created them. We ask that you please PM the writers for permission before connecting your character to these family trees.

If you would like to make a pureblood family tree of your own they must be from a country that has yet to be represented. You can check for the list below for reference.

Guidelines for Making Your Own Family Tree

Now if you decide to make your family tree here are a few rules that you need to follow.

  • As stated above they must be from a country that has yet to be represented.
  • The tree has to go back four generations on both the maternal and paternal side of your character (i.e. the tree has to go back to your character’s maternal and paternal great-great-grandparents)
  • Connecting your tree with other active trees is both allowed and encouraged but please make sure to PM the writer responsible for that tree for permission and to establish the correct links
  • You must use the coding below when presenting your pureblood family
  • When complete please PM both Emjay and Dancing Flower with your finished product
  • If you have any questions at all or are having difficulty with the process please PM both Emjay and Dancing Flower

Frequently Asked Questions about General Stuff

  • What time is it in game? We are currently writing in the month of October 2013.
  • How does time work within the game? We usually spend about two OOC months on one IC month. If needed or requested, we will spend a longer period of time on the month in-game.
  • I'm still not really sure how time works... You have an entire month at your disposal. If you only feel comfortable writing one scene at time time, only write one scene. If you feel like you can handle more, there is no limit on how many scenes your character can be in. It is up to you not to time paradox yourself (for example: If your character makes a discovery on April 20, they should not reference it in their scene on April 16.
  • Is writing in classes and events required? Nope! This is just an added flavor to the game. We want you to have options and more to write about than day to day occurrences. :)
  • How often are we expected to post? Post when you feel like it. Seriously, you can post as often as you like. Just do whatever feels comfortable for you. We have people that post really quickly and others take weeks/months.
  • Need more help with purebloods? Emjay broke it down really nicely in this post.
  • May I have a character that is new to magic entirely? Like they did not attend the magical primary school? No, we would prefer if all new characters attended the primary school. This is for your benefit so it can be easier for them to have and make connections with other characters.
  • Where is the code for post tag headers? Click here.

Frequently Asked Questions about Beauxbatons

  • What type of familiars are Beauxbatons students allowed to have? Kestrels, Cat (no more than 10 pounds) and Fish (no more than (10 cm) or Bunny (no more than 6 pounds).
  • How do programs work within Beauxbatons? From the moment students enter the equal of Institute of Magic for Young Wizards (from 11-15 years of age), students are tested to discover where their interest might lie. If a student displays more interest or has already developed a skill within a particular area, they help hone their ability. When they graduate from the equal of Junior Wizarding Academy, they are allowed to test into a program. And if they pass, they are allowed to further their learning within the program. Anyone who is not admitted entrance may test again at the beginning of each year. When transitioning into their university years, students within the program take another test (think of it as a bar examination) to see if their knowledge is up to par. If they fail, they will not be allowed to enter the university level.
  • What happens to Beauxbatons' students after the tournament? Beauxbatons students will only be available for play during the Tri-Wizard tournament. They will be at Hogwarts for the entire school year; the school year lasted approximately about two years of real life time. There will be an option to have these students (fourth year and above) transfer to Hogwarts after the tournament's completion.
  • What's the difference between foreign students and Hogwarts students? Culture and upbringing. Also, their schools might have different perceptions of what they consider to be acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Also, foreign students cannot earn house points. However, they can still participate in all events, classes, and etc.

Frequently Asked Questions about Durmstrang

  • Are there familiars allowed at Durmstrang and can they bring them to Hogwarts? Yes there are but they differ from the animals allowed at Hogwarts. At Durmstrang students are allowed to have foxes or birds of prey. There are limitations depending on the student's rank and also the breed of fox or bird they are bringing. Cadets are not allowed to bring pets to Durmstrang, that privilege is only for students in Squads 1, 2, and 3. Also only Squad 1 students are allowed to bring their familiars to Hogwarts for the TWT, if they so wish. Students must remember that Durmstrang is located in nothern Norway where the winters can be very harsh. There are warm summers but for most of the year it is a cold. We ask that people keep this in mind when choosing their familiars. For example a Fennec foxes would simply be unable to survive in such a climate. As for the birds students can have Hawks, Falcons, Kites, Accipiters, and of course Owls but all birds must be either small to medium (largest being 18–25 inches in length, with a wingspan from 40–50 in.) Their are smaller breeds of course, if people would like to the research and choose one of those.
  • How long are the students IDs and do we get to pick them? Yes you can pick the student IDs. We ask that you please check other character sheets once they are posted to make sure your number does not conflict with someone else's. The students IDs are 3 to 4 digits long.
  • Do they have a JWA/What is the name of their JWA? Their JWA is located in Moscow, Russia inside the Russian Ministry of Magic. It is called the Akademiya Iz Mladshiya Volshebnik (Academy of Junior Wizards) or AMV.
  • What is the situation with haircuts? Students in Squads 1, 2, and 3 are allowed to have normal haircuts. Cadets must have either buzz cuts (males) or just below the ears (girls). On a similar note there will only be a few Cadets coming for the TWT (to do the grunt work), most of the students that are going are in Squads 1, 2, and 3. The reasoning behind this is because Durmstrang wants to bring their best and brightest to compete.
  • What happens to Durmstrang' students after the tournament? Durmstrang students will only be available for play during the Tri-Wizard tournament.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hogwarts

  • May my student come from a foreign country or be a transfer student? We would prefer if your student came from the listed areas where students are usually accepted (England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland).

Professor and Staff Character Sheet

So you want to make a Professor or Staff Member?

This is what you need to know...

Headmaster Tseric

  • What’s your character’s blood status?

    • If your character is a muggleborn, you have the easiest creation path. Hurrah!
    • If your character is half-blood, your character needs to have one half-blood or pureblood parent.
    • If your character comes from a pureblood family (you brave soul), your character needs to have an extensive family background. Not to worry! We have it covered for you. There are families already made by other writers and you can attach your newly created character to their family tree. You will need to pm the creator of the family to determine where your character will fit within the grand scheme of their family. New pureblood families will not be accepted unless they come from a region of the world where none have been already made.
    • We have also created a new blood status called Magicborne! Magicbornes are the children of a muggleborn witch and wizard.

  • Determine your character's age and education.

    • Assuming your character went to school before the change in wizarding education, they will have graduated at 17 years of age from any of the wizarding schools. If they graduated recently, they will have done so in the new system and therefore at 22 years of age.
    • Grades that need accounting for are OWLs and NEWTs for anyone who graduated school before the third wizard war (before 1999). WOMBATs for those who graduated after the year 2003.
      • OWLs: Transfiguration, Defence Against Dark Arts (DADA), Charms, Herbology, Astronomy, Potions, History of Magic (HoM), Care Of Magical Creatures (CoMC), Divination, Ancient Runes
      • Grades: (from best to worst)Outstandig - Exceeds Expectations - Acceptable | Poor - Dreadful - Troll
    • A character who graduated in the old system (before 2003) could take NEWT classes for any subject they passed their OWLs on. Generally around 6 subjects should do it.
    • A character who graduated in the new system (after 2003) could take as many NEWT classes as fit their schedule. Required classes are Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Herbology, Astronomy, Potions. Elective classes are Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Divination, DragonLore (if you graduated after 2006) and Care of Magical Creatures.
    • Professors and Staff can have graduated from any wizarding school in the HP world. Grade guide is universal.

  • Check the Face Claims list to make sure the visual representation of your character is not already in use by another writer. If you are having trouble finding an available face, just ask and we will send you some potential options.

Please send completed character sheets to both Emjay and Dancing Flower. Also forward any questions pertaining to character creation to both Emjay and Dancing Flower.

A Little Deeper

Personality:

Ikenna is a restless soul. He has been this way since he was a child. He never gets too comfortable in a new place because his mind is always looking forward to the next location. Although he would hate to admit it, deep down Ikenna knows that he is selfish. He had left his family behind, despite their wishes otherwise, to pursue his own interests. And while that was natural, it had been his time to leave the nest, he had pursued a field of study that had caused problems for his parents. He had not come to visit, he had barely written letters. He had immersed himself in his research with no thought of how they felt, how worried they were. Despite this Ikenna is a kind man. He is a good friend and a good listener. He works extremely hard as a scholar and also as an educator. Most will find Ikenna to be very approachable, ready with a smile and a firm handshake for those he meets. He is playful and sweet and that can sometimes be mistaken for naivety or weakness. Although he is kind and cares about those around him he isn’t a fool. If someone tries to take advantage of his kindness and mistake it for weakness he will not hesitate to put them in their place. The same goes for his students. He expects the best from them. One of things he hates most is to see a student with potential waste it away because they are not willing to put in the time and effort into their school work. He encourages his students to come and speak to him if they are struggling in class. He is willing to do whatever it takes to help a student but they have to want the help. They need to have the drive to try. Ikenna is intelligent and has devoted his entire life to scholarly pursuits. He truly believes that education is the strongest tool we possess. Due to his restless nature and a lifetime of constant travel Ikenna shies away from commitment. He makes friends easily but never fully opens up with people because in his mind, the relationship is only temporary.

History:

Ikenna was born and raised in the city of Wolverhampton in central England. He was an only child. Both his parents worked and didn’t spend much time at home so Ikenna spent most of his time reading, particularly historical books on older forms of magic. He especially enjoyed those that spoke of ancient forms of magic in different cultures. He would look through these books and imagine himself travelling to these places. It was his dream to explore the world and learn as much as he possibly could. Life so far was dull and stagnant. He craved the constant change and excitement of travel.

Ikenna’s childhood wasn’t all books and daydreaming. He grew up during a very turbulent time in English wizarding history, the First Wizarding War. In a family of mixed magical heritage the threat was very real. His father was a muggleborn wizard and because of this there days when Ikenna worried if his father would return home safely. Both his parents worked in the Ministry of Magic, a place that had been targeted on several occasions during the war.

His time at Hogwarts was uneventful. Of course there were the usual shenanigans and teenage milestones but other than that nothing special. Ikenna worked extremely hard on his schooling. He actually enjoyed most of his classes, wanting to learn as much as he could about magic and the world around him.

After he graduated the first thing Ikenna did was visit the land of his ancestors, Nigeria. While he was there he became immersed in the world of voodoo. He had read books on the topic before but to actually be in the place of its birth where it was still openly practised, was a completely different experience. He ended up staying in West Africa for several years and took extensive notes on his findings. He stayed in some of the villages and worked with the local shamen. He returned to England a more worldly and more mature man.

It was while he was back in England that he got the idea to write a book series on voodoo. The ancient form of magic had spread to different parts of the world taking on aspects from other cultures and morphing into their own unique practises. He began to make plans to travel to the Caribbean and the United States. His parents were not thrilled. They wanted him to settle down and get a steady job. Ikenna would have none of it. He was intent on leaving Wolverhampton behind again. Luckily for him he had a trust that his grandmother had set up for him. The trip would be expensive and most likely drain the money his grandmother had put aside for him but for Ikenna it was more than worth it. For the second time he left and at the young age of 23 Ikenna set off for the Americas. He spent the next 15 years there researching and collecting information for his books. He wrote as he traveled and published the first installment (mostly on the religion of Vodun, its cosmology and how it was tied to West African voodoo). The book was well received among the scholarly community and helped fund some of his trip, his trust money was running low. During his 5 years in New Orleans he taught History of Magic at the Junior Wizarding Institute while doing research on Louisiana Voodoo.

His second book focused on the influx of African slaves in the Americas who brought their beliefs to the New World. Although he spent an extensive amount of time in these places he was not able to finish his series of books. After 15 years in the Americas he was called home. While he was in New Orleans he had received a letter stating that his father was gravely ill. Although he had been avoiding to go to England for the past 15 years he had no choice but to go back home. Things were certainly different. His mother looked so much older and his father looked like a completely different person. He was so painfully thin, the skin around his face tight and gaunt. He was weak, unable to stand for very long and needed to be helped to the bathroom. He couldn’t even wash himself. He was angry with his mother. Why hadn’t she told him earlier? Apparently the illness had been sudden. They hadn’t seen it coming and by the time he had started showing symptoms it was already too late. The healers had told his mother to call him home, to say goodbye.

It was clear his mother felt resentment at his absence. Yes, maybe he had avoided seeing them again, avoided their questions, their queries into why he hadn’t gotten married, why he didn’t just settle down somewhere instead of roaming around the world. What was he running from? Even he didn’t know. He had always felt like he had been searching for something. A restlessness consumed him and as he indulged his nomadic nature his relationship with his family had suffered. Now here he was, his father on his deathbed and he hadn’t seen him for 15 years. There were so many things he wanted to say, that he wanted to apologize for but he didn’t get the chance. His father died a few weeks after he got home. It hit Ikenna hard. He felt guilt at not being there to support his mother and not being there to spend time with his father. The guilt drove him to abandon his travels, at least for a while. Instead he got an apartment in Wolverhampton and wrote another book, using the research he had collected. He was at home for three years, spending time with his mother, writing, and doing freelance editing work before he received a letter. It was from Varius Tseric, an old friend from his days travelling in West Africa. Varius had been studying dragons. It had been nice to see a fellow British wizard so far away from home and the two got along well. That being said he hadn’t heard from the man in 20 plus years. What the letter contained surprised him. He had heard that Tseric had become Headmaster of their alma mater. Varius was now offering him a job to teach Voodoo at Hogwarts. Teach Voodoo at Hogwarts? It was unheard of. Varius had some plans to reform the education at Hogwarts, to broaden the spectrum of the students’ education. This was a chance to teach a whole new generation to appreciate a highly stigmatized art. Ikenna himself had experienced the stigma of devoting his life to such a taboo form of magic. People immediately assumed that he was a dark wizard. He had been investigated once by the Ministry. Eventually they deemed him safe but he was sure they were ready to pounce if given the slightest chance.. Taking this job could be potentially dangerous. He could already imagine the backlash from parents but he couldn’t pass it up. To teach the subject he had devoted his life to at his alma mater, it was an honour. He had taught before and knew he had a knack for it. He wrote back accepting the position.

He was a bit worried about his mother. They had grown close in his three years in Wolverhampton. It had been a second chance to make up for the neglect he had shown her in the past. She was proud of him working at Hogwarts. This was what she wanted for her son. She wanted him to find a nice, stable job in the UK. She wanted him to be close to home so that she could see him more often. With his mother’s blessing Ikenna made his way to Hogwarts. The year would surely prove to be interesting, to say the least.

Family:

Mother

Elissa Obekwe (née Zabini) - Halfblood, Retired (Improper Use of Magic Office), 68
Hogwarts House - Gryffindor
Class of 1962

His mother is a Zabini, a pureblood family of English and Nigerian descent. She herself is a halfblood but her father had been a pureblood. She doesn’t have much contact with her father’s side of the family. Their values and beliefs differ so Elissa prefers to separate herself from their ‘negative energy’ as she puts it.

Father

Kayode Obekwe (1942-2010) - Muggleborn, Retired (International Magical Trading Standards Body)
Hogwarts House - Ravenclaw
Class of 1956

Born to Nigerian immigrants his father was the first in his family to have magical powers. There had been legends of family members with powers but most had simply thought of them as just that, old family myths. So when strange things started to happen and Kayode eventually got his letter of admission to Hogwarts, the family was shocked to find that the old family myths had some truth to them. He named his only child, Ikenna, after his own father.

Likes: Reading, writing, travel, indigenous artwork, history of magic, music
Dislikes: Cocky people or braggers, clingy people, wasted potential, idiots, ignorance, bigots, staying in one place for too long
Fears: The Ministry, disappointing his mother, cockroaches (there were some disgustingly large ones in Africa and the Caribbean)
Worst Memory(ies): His father dying before he had a chance to tell him how he felt. It's his biggest regret.
Best Memory(ies): Traveling for the first time and going to West Africa. Seeing the land of his ancestors, seeing something so different, something so unlike he had ever seen before. It was an amazing experience to actually visit the places he had seen in pictures as a child. He had been worried that he might never achieve that dream but to actually be there. It was surreal.
Favorite Animal(s): Elephant, lion, sphinx, phoenix, tiger
Favorite Color(s): Dark blue, white, black, red

I was in HaF back when it first started with my little number girl Lavender. I've always been sad that I had to leave the game due to offline personal issues.

I probably can't reuse Lavender, can I? I really liked her. She was quirky and wasn't involved in much before I had to leave.

What was that blue box all about? D:

=) It was an extra BBCode command that kind of made the whole thing freak out by putting a big, blue box up for some reason. That stuff works in mysterious ways.

You can most definitely reuse Lavender. No one has her face claim to my awareness. I have to do some digging to find her character sheet. Shouldn't take too long.

Also, for anyone who has played in the game in the past, you are more than welcome to return! If your face claim has been taken...sorry...but there are plenty of other faces to pick from. xD

Jag

No need to dig it up. I keep all my character sheets in a file. I have her. ^__^

Just going to make a few adjustments to her. I was originally planning on having a big reveal that she was a lesbian, but I think I'll have her already aware of her sexuality instead of it being some big surprise for her. Instead, make it more a part of her personality for why she is the way she is (maybe even her dead grandparents that she loved having known and kept her secret for her while they were alive).

Yes!

That sounds reasonable to me since a year has passed by. That reminds me that we need to make a list of things you guys characters would know about. Not to worry, there are only a few key events and changes around the actually in-game stuff. Also, I think we have a few lady characters in game that are not purely heterosexual so she won't be boxed into a corner.  :-)

Jag

I shall make my minor adjustments and send her off to you all then. ^^

Since she'll be 17, would she have obtained her Apparition License yet or is that something she'll have to do during the course of the game? I'm fine with either.
