It really seems like late summer has been a real dry-spell as for tittles of worthy worthiness. All the games I want have been pushed up or planned for autumn. I was hoping to tide myself with Dead Rising 2 but it's been delayed.

Anyone else feeling the strain of no game?

That's kind of hard to say, but I would have liked a new, non-Japanese (In style not nationality. Dead Rising is Japanese but God do they know how to pander to us Westerners) RPG I think.

Wolfy, I was thinking more along the lines of Fallout: New Vegas and Fable 3 being my Autumn picks. Both Halo and MMOs have really no appeal to me.

Nope, I'm not buying into Blizzard's new apparent taste for greed. I'm not paying 180 dollars and tax to play each single-player campaign of Star Craft 2 and Multiplayer is not an option because A. I can support it and B. I'm never going to beat South Korea.

EDIT: There is another reason. I'm kind of not liking PC anymore. It's becoming an obviously inferior platform to game on from a financial point of view but I had a lot of angst against Blizzard.

If you have not played it, and are looking for a decent RPG with a relatively low price since it has been out a few months, I might suggest picking up Dragon Age.    I picked it up pretty cheap, and really enjoyed it.    If you are looking for a sc-fi style, and agian haven't played it and cost is an option, I would go for Mass Effect and/or Mass Effect 2.     All of these are good, and available for ALL platforms.

I doubt I would enjoy it. I'm not a big enough Star Craft fan buy a new sixty dollar game for every campaign. I just don't think they can give a single campaign of an RTS enough single-player content to justify it. I think it boils down to:

60 dollar game
30 dollar expansion
30 dollar expansion

equals 120 dollars over the 180 they get if they do what they do now.

Typically, when I'm between games (not likely to happen any time soon, but that's due to time constraints on my end), I'll take an old game and try crazy shit like speed runs, or no-upgrade runs, or single-character runs.

That kind of has limited appeal for me. I rarely get any reward for doing it and then some South Korean ten-year-old does it in half the time or with one less necessary upgrade.

I like Transformers but I hear it's really multiplayer focused and I'm kind of looking for stuff on the cheap and Transformers just hit shelves... though I do have a birthday this month. I'm saving up my money for the Fall, Christmas, and Spring blitzkrieg. Plus I'm working on getting a HD TV so I can finally get rid of my CRT thing from like 98.

I can't download it. Making the campaign longer doesn't mean it's going to get better. RTS's are kind of limited in what you can do per mission. It's just the nature. A lot of RTS is just the strategy of using units and structures. Challenges don't really add that much for me either because they're usually a result of boredom with the rest of the game.

Plus even if I like it I'd still have to shuffle off to buy 120 dollars in non-refundable/trade software.

Honestly it's kind of petty of me but I hope Blizzard gets a karma potato in the tailpipe.

That may or may not be the case, I think it's more of the fact that Blizzard had it sitting in development so long that they had a ton of ideas to use and saw dollar signs and again Blizzard didn't seem to have a problem selling out so... back on topic... now. :D

If you can ever download anything, check out Alien Swarm. Its free on Steam, and its a fun little game. Hopefully once the community has its hands on it for a little longer, some good user-made campaigns will start floating around.

Edge: They look kind of like a series and that's a lot of money to put forward to play it chronologically.
I also despise Kingdom Hearts with venom. I'm kind of burned out on Pokemon too. The problem is they're all the same game. Play one you've pretty much played 'em all.

Just about anything from the Total War series? It's strategy, but it's awesome in that it's turn-based on the campaign, but the battles are in real time. Then again, I'm a histori-junkie.

Craz: I'm not a big fan of Total War. The battles take so long to position and breaching the larger structures like forts and castles takes as long as a real siege would. Plus I would like to stay away from PC. I've said it before it's just not a superior platform as far as finances are concerned. I'm not a big sports fan either. Thanks for trying though.

As far as I'm aware you don't have a PS3 so these are 360 suggestions (some are available on PC as well):

Deadly Premonition (budget game, can get it for under 20 used), Miner Dig Deep (Indie game on XBL for 80 points or 1$), Shadow Complex (XBLA title from last year, I loved it), if you're looking for a Western RPG type feel, I think the Borderlands DLC is on sale this week, you could pick up a copy and check that out.  It's a bit Western RPGish (like a shooter-heavy version of Fallout, I think, still very fun).  Operation Darkness, a very quaint SRPG that is actually pretty fun and different.

Alpha Protocol.  Yeah, everyone panned it because it took so long to come out, and it wasn't as good as Mass Effect 2 (what is?), but that shouldn't deter you from getting what really is a great game.  What Mass Effect claims to do with its conversations that change the course of the game, Alpha Protocol actually does with its more complex but just as intuitive take on it; there is no good guy/bad guy path, there are just different paths.  I've been having an absolute ball with it.

Have you given Alan Wake a try? The animations aren't all that great but the story is really good and the game play is fun....if a bit difficult.

I have to disagree with Mannik partly:  the story of Alan Wake is good, but the gameplay is terrible in my opinion.  Feels really dated; standard go from one location to another and kill things with a lack of progress (zero RPG elements).  It's fun for a quick playthrough on a rental if you can stand the repetitive combat and environments however, but don't expect replay value.

And I'd argue that Alpha Protocol is better than Mass Effect 2 to a certain kind of gamer:  the kind who likes hardcore RPGs ala Fallout 1 & 2 (but not 3 so much).  It's a much more behind-the-scenes dice-heavy game.  Mass Effect 2 was basically a Third-Person Shooter with heavy RPG story elements but light RPG gameplay elements.

Actually I found Mass Effect 2 a lot deeper if you played it on the higher difficulty. When all the enemies start getting extra shields and armor and whatnot. You start paying very close attention to the construction of multiple teams.

I enjoyed Alan Wake and also thought the gameplay much deeper and challenging on the harder levels of difficulty.

I can't stand Alpha Protocol. I rented it and just thought the protagonist was so insipid and the gameplay so basically clunky that it became a chore to muscle through. Change the game or not. Developer's need to learn that if you're going to go ahead and keep a game. It's got to be better than what your originally scoped for it.

Okay so I've decided to make a list of criteria:

1. XBOX 360 and DS. That's what I've got.
2. No PC. just in case. I want to be able to get some money back if it turns out I don't like it.
3. No JRPGs. They're becoming like plain yogurt for my video gaming tastes.
4. In and around $20 American.

I don't think so, That one's first-party game from SCEA. They don't let those go often. I played and beat 1 and 2.

I know they released the two as one for PS3 but I don't think they did for Xbox.
