Velvety darkness greeted her from the other side of the door, beckoning for her to step inside. She hesitated on the threshold, grinding her teeth in a struggle with herself. As if of its own will one foot stepped over the idealistic line, and with that the will to fight ebbed. The inky blackness was pervaded by that scent, carrying her away on a familiar rush.

Despite coming from humble beginnings, he had his own duende, that certain draw that pulled people in. In a woman, it would have been called je ne sais quoi. In him, it was called pure animal magnetism. It was not from his clothes, which were well-worn and threadbare in places. Nor was it in the way he styled his hair, which was the most minimalist, common style at the time. No, it was in the way he moved, walked, talked, and looked at you. Really looked at you, as if he was uncovering some hidden treasure which no one else knew about. That was how he captured so many hearts on screen.

She had heard many stories about him, of how he had the ability to turn heads when he entered any room. He was described as being mysterious, intelligent and by some even devilishly handsome. She wondered if it was his duende that had got him this far. Tonight, she strived to find the answer to that.

She had picked a laced black dress for the occasion, her hair drawn into an elegant bun save for a loose strand of hair that fell on her bare shoulders, a deliberate choice on her part. Her heels clicked on the marble floor as she made her way to the gallery, heart racing and hands gripping her clutch bag tightly when she heard a voice call out behind her and she whipped around.

--

The doctors attributed his bilious appearance to addiction and had offered to place him into rehabilitation once he recovered and Tanya agreed. The past few weeks had been tough on the couple, with losing their jobs, home and recent talk of divorce. It was like a domino effect of bad things until they had begun to spiral out of control and she couldn't take it anymore.

She walked through the forest in the dead of night, the thick trees hiding any source of light that might be available to come through. She could see nothing, and as fearless as she considered herself it made every little noise seem ten times worse than it was. The sound of a twig snapping had never been so scary before. Each soft hand of hers reached out to the sides, dragging along the rough bark of the trees as she made her way through the soft forest floor. She thought that it would help guide her, but little did she know the trees had a mind of their own. Their deep roots shifted slowly, making no sound, helping them move across the ground swiftly but quietly as they led her to the hallowed grounds of the lake monster residing in the middle of the forest. It groaned, hungry for a sacrifice that would sate it for another day or two, lifting its head as the girl drew near. She heard the roar of the monster, breathed in the bilious smell of the swamp, stepped into the murky water that seemed to suck her under, and it happened so quickly that she had no chance to react. Before she knew it she was under the lake, suffocating in thick liquid, dead before the monster could even reach her, and then the forest went back to normal, waiting patiently for their next victim to arise.

He was always in a foul bilious mood when it came time to pay bills for the month. Once again, his wife had spent hundreds on her cheese addiction, his daughter had spent more than her allowance on model airplanes, and his son had exceeded what they had given him for dance lessons. The only one under budget was the new baby, and that was only because she had not pooped as much and used up as many diapers this time.

What was the threshold for an acquaintance becoming a friend? It was an odd effect of the modern age, where one could be friends even closer than family, when one didn't even know who the other person looked like. Penpals existed in the past, but with the speed of communications today, words feel closer than ever before, even though some of the personality in handwriting has been lost. How different would books read if we could see the original hand of the author through it?

Nixie paced up and down the branch, stopping now and then to flutter her wings in agitation. Deep in thought, she didn't notice the tight furrow between her brows, the stern bow of her lower lip, or the forceful grip of her hands clenching the air. All she knew was she would get even with those rascals if it was the last thing she did.

Pranks were one thing, but they had utterly destroyed all the hard work she had done laying each dew drop carefully in place upon old Widow Marm's web. So silently had she worked that not a string vibrated as the oldest one had slept, dreaming of lavish meals and the anticipation of the next plump, errant beetle to pass her way.

Nixie had scooted herself off to a nearby bole to watch the magic begin. The sun was moments away from breaking the nightspell, and glimmer her creation into a myriad sparkling globes. Marm would be pleased with how well she had learned her craft. The countless hours repeating the task until Nixie could complete her job with none the wiser of her visit.

It was that moment that her siblings had woken in a scuffle of twirling flutters and battering flight. They hurled through Marm's web without notice, or at least without notice until they found themselves hopelessly entangled, staring up into glaring multiple eyes, and unable to cover their ears as she chittered for a full time-span before cutting them loose.

That should have been enough punishment, and probably was for Marm. Nixie on the other hand had plans of her own. A devilish smirk crossed her features as she volplaned from the branch downward through the thicket, dodging her way through all the twists and turns she knew so well.

The cavern entrance was darker than a starless night, and many unsavory creatures dwelt within, but Nixie was on a mission. Time to call in that favor from Old Man Batz.

He was taught to volplane in case of emergencies, but even with the countless hours of training he had, nothing could prepare him for the terror that would grip him in actual reality. He took a deep breath and started correcting the angle downwards, hoping that the paper-thin material of his hang-glider would hold together through the meteor storm.

Parliament was having their usual argy-bargy again while the ex-prime minister had tea in a quaint cafe, relaxing far away from all the arguments. He felt like he was having a well-deserved break and even waited in the cafe for the fresh scones to be ready. He had cleared out the rest of his schedule for the rest of the week so that he could destress after his long term in office. But could a prime minister's job ever be done? He heard a scream from an alley across the street and sighed before standing up and hurrying to a secluded car park nearby. He tore open his shirt and became "The Gunwielder", crushing enemies in his biceps of fury.

'Perspicuous is the word of today.'
'What?'
'Perspicuous. Tinted with irony.' He grinned.
'You've gotta stop making these words up, Doctor.'
'It's in the dictionary!'
'Yeah? Well you swallowed one at some point!'
'Nonsense, you're just lacking grasp on the English language!'
'You what?!'
'Now, now. Don't you be starting an argy-bargy with me.' He grinned again.

She'd had enough. Within moments, she had stormed out of the TARDIS, leaving him stood alone at the console.

She sighed softly as he held her in his arms. She had never felt so happy, so safe, so comfortable, yet there was something holding her back. With the tight hold her ex boyfriend, who was abusive, had on her mind, she wasn't sure if she'd ever be able to fully give herself to her new lover. Without warning, she burst into tears and buried her face in his chest. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, never questioning her for he already knew the troubles that plagued her mind. After a while, when the tears subsided, he took her chin in his hand and lifted it up so that he was looking into her red, tired eyes. "He doesn't own you, do you understand? Your body belongs to me now. If you let him control you, you're choosing him over me.. and we can't have that now can we?" She nodded submissively, his words perspicuous. He made it seem effortless, as if everything was going to be okay and nothing bad in the world would ever come to her. "Yes, daddy." She whispered, a promise that she would never put anyone before him again.

In all his twenty three year young days Varz had never been so terrified as the moment he found himself clinging to his brother Larz. Both of them, eyes slightly teary knowing death might come at any moment as they stared upward into the many faceted eyes of Widow Marm were regretting whatever sparked their tussle. How could they have been so careless as to let their rumpus go unchecked. Each a scapegrace in their own right; when paired together anything could happen, and did.

Varz tried to answer her chittering, but found his voice was stuck behind the large lump that seemed to expand in his throat, his mouth going dry as a summer devilwind. There was barely room to nod every now and then, though to be frank he wasn't sure what she was saying.

A shrill squeak finally broke past Larz's lips as her fangs drew close to his neck. To his utter relief she began slicing away at the strands of mangled webbing. Had she planned to devour them surely he an his brother would be spinning into a tightly wound dinner bowl by now. Instead they found themselves soon released after what seemed hours of terror.

Old Widow Marm, had barely begun her scramble back into her nest, repairing bits along the way when...

"Whatever, it was totally your fault!"

"No way, you started it with that belly grumbling." Larz stepped on the back of Varz's shoe popping it off his brother's heel.

"Hey, stop it or I'll show you a real fight." Varz elbowed his brother.

The argy-bargy continued as they wandered off into the dank of the forest.

The professor presented the concepts with a perspicuous explanation, such that even a ten-year-old could understand it. In fact, he proudly declared, he had tested it out on his nephew the week before, and was only satisfied when the little boy understood it. The old man then went on to boastfully say that his nephew could now ace the test next week. This was how we ended up locating the little boy on facebook and trying to bribe him with pizza and cake. Alas, the boy had much more refined taste than us and demanded a big jar of caviar. We decided studying would be easier.

He was born a scapegrace and would die a scapegrace, even after marriage. That was what he had always maintained. And yet, as the years went by, his wife convinced him to sell his motorbike for a large van, his guns for books, and his moonshine operation for a craft brew kit. The more he looked at himself in the mirror, the more he felt he was a stranger unto himself. And yet, he still could not contain the urge to run naked through his backyard and yowl at the moon.

Lyla cautiously entered the empty warehouse, her footsteps echoing in the darkness that made her shudder. He had asked to meet here, told her that he would explain everything. Why he did what he did.

She couldn't understand why he had to pick a place as lamentable as this. It smelled of mildew, rotten eggs and dank wood that made her nauseous and regretful. Semi shattered windows smeared with uneven paint or what she thought was paint watched her as she walked on, the dim light from the outside tracing cross hatched patterns on her face.

She gave a shout to announce her arrival then, that she was ready to hear him out. When he stepped out of the corner, his expression a tristful mess of sorrow and eyes vacant she felt herself shiver even more.

"This was where she was murdered and I'm here to tell you why". She nodded and waved her small notebook at him, "let's hear it" and clicked her pen.

Her face was tristful as she looked down at the grave. Her baby had gone too soon, but there was nothing to be done about it. She lifted her shovel and started digging. Each mound of dirt unearthed was cathartic and she knew her baby would come home soon.

Old Widow Marm sighed in a tristful manner. The youth of today had no respect for the old ways. Some day, likely not to far off from now, they would wish they had paid attention to their elders. Pulling her thoughts back to matters at hand she began weaving her web anew with great alacrity of spirit.

Meanwhile, some distance away Nixie crossed the threshold into the lair of Old Man Batz...
