The squinny squirrel narrowed his eyes, causing them to look almost closed, as he stared at the almond that had rolled into the crevice of the woman's butt. Unwilling to relent, he reached between and hung on to her jeans as she started yelling and jumping up and down. Finally, he pulled the nut out and ran off.

They looked at the finished tower and grimaced, parts of it were jutting out while some others were hanging loose. Jason frowned at the incoherence of their project and pushed his glasses up as he turned around to face Aliya. “We need to take it apart and redo it. I just don’t think this will get us an A”
Aliya slumped back in the chair at that, she wasn’t in the mood for a redo but he was right and they did need to make it perfect. With a light smile, she got up and crossed over to his side, bending a little as she surveyed their masterpiece. “I think I know where the problem is”

---

The man had a penchant for all things valuable as was obvious from the collections he kept in his office. There was a jade vase on the center of the table encased in a glass box by the window and an entire wall lined with ancient manuscripts from all over the world. Nothing however compared to what was inside the velvet cloth hidden deep inside the bottom drawers of his desk, where it rattled uncontrollably.

Sandra saw that the child had squinny eyes just like her father as she turned around from the stove to pour the porridge in the little girl’s lop sided bowl. The child perked up at the sight of the bowl and picked up the wooden spoon sitting next to it, immediately dipping it inside and swirling it around. She giggled at her antics and her grandmother chided her for it “Ah Maia, no playing with food, child” Maia looked up at her and smiled widely,“Grandma, this is good” she bobbled in her chair before happily returning to her bowl.

He led an ascetic life, subsisting only on rice and fish, so as to become the next sushi master. From morning to night, he would make harvest rice, catch fish, cook rice, slice fish, and fry vegetables. He became a lean, mean, sushi machine.

His penchant for daredevil stunts oftentimes led him into trouble. The doctors and nurses at the emergency ward knew him by name. The grim reaper visited him many times and they became fast friends. That was how he gained trust, and upon his death, became a grim reaper. Now he could do all the stunts he liked while chasing people for their owed debts, without dying himself.

His acrid words engendered feelings of animosity from his wife, until he was left to die alone on his deathbed. Only his son turned up for his funeral, and no friends. His son swore to lead a better life and so he did what he couldn't do for his son in death.

The heat was oppressive, despite the sun having long since set. Even the moon seemed to radiate an unwanted warmth with it's sullen glow. The unpleasant atmosphere engendered a surly disposition in their small band. The barren landscape was littered with the jagged remains of city that had died in a prior age. Skeletal fingers of twisted metal reached toward the sky and the ground glittered with countless shards of glass. The giant grave was shunned by most, yet they could think of no more fitting place to test out the summoning rituals. Doubtlessly some of them would perish in the attempt, but those that lived would be granted entrance into the Grand Spire.

And that prize was worth the risk.

First it was a day, only an apple and a sandwich had gone missing and he brushed it off as a harmless prank by the other kids in the classroom. Being the new kid in town always meant that something like this would happen. It always did for the first day and then things would go back to normal, but then it happened again and again until he got sick of it. The boy stopped bringing in his lunch and his demeanor towards his fellow classmates began to change. It engendered feelings of bitterness and lack of trust in others that carried on through the term.

Her moue was her money-maker. One pout from her and the man she was on a date with would open his wallet and order anything off the menu or any bag she wished. She had perfected it over the years, especially with her father.

The little boy inherited his loquacious ways from his salesman father. There was never a quiet moment with him and he kept talking about everything he saw and thought about. His mother quickly enrolled him in a drama class to get some of his energy spent there.

The yips had him in a grip. His hold on his bat felt slippery, but there was no time to think about it. He swung, and there was no satisfying crack. He had missed the ball again, and with it, the chance to play in tomorrow's game.

She thumped the machine one more time, but it was no use, the software upgrade had made the computer go haywire, meaning an entire day's work on mind numbing spreadsheets was lost for ever...

She bit her lip fighting the urge to swear, another day like this and she would go haywire herself...

(you'd almost think this was autobiographical wouldn't you?)

What was supposed to be a happy day had gone haywire. The aged brandy she had ordered from Jupiter had gone missing. The cured meats from Mars had disappeared as well. Even the cake from Venus had mysteriously vanished. If she didn't have armed guards who swore they saw no one enter the kitchen, she would have thought someone was out to sabotage her.

No amount of goodwill garnered by the politician could erase away the fact that he had been caught feeding the dogs at the shelter with human remains, even if they helped cut cost for the town budget.

The animus he felt towards cats could not be overcome even with the soft mewling of the kitten. His intense loathing stemmed from a long history with his mother's pet cat who would scratch his ankles every time he was at the top of the stairs.

Everything was in chaos, no one could have predicted the cataclysmic seismic activity that shut down the subterranean supply corridors.  Everyone had sought sanctuary inside the city, but with no more shipments coming from the underground farms it wasn't a sustainable situation. So they were shunted out of the city in small teams to garner what supplies they could. Many didn't return, but that just meant less mouths to feed. What remained of the governing officials saw it as a win-win situation.
