Nadine had reached for the tendril of green, and had noted that it pulled away. Moving further from the two women as their conversation centered around it. Almost as if it knew, or maybe felt the vibe of examination. She had seen Hannah pull her space gun just in case, but Nadine didn't think it was needed. Naively, of course, she reached further still, nearly chasing the tendril. Fully expecting it to pull from the earth with a clod of dirt dangling from twisted and tangled roots, the sight that appeared was no less than a shock to her. The grass-like receptor didn't feel like grass at all. In fact, it felt alive for lack of a better word. The second that the creature was grabbed, a wail erupted. Like that of a high-pitched white noise. One that debilitated, and induced great confusion in the recipients of such a wave of sound.

Nadine's eyes grew wide when the head of the creature was exposed, and the dirt fell away from its features. In shock at what she held in her hand, she wasn't entirely sure what to do. The wail was painfully discomforting, and the longer she held the thing, the louder the volume and pain increased. Leather-like skin, deep chocolate brown in color with earthy tones everywhere else save for the vibrant green of its antennae. Even the creature's eyes weren't something they had ever seen before. Pitch black in totality, it lacked the ivory whites of a 'normal' earth eye. The scream continued to increase, and Nadine could barely hear the sound of Hannah's voice begging her to drop the creature. The noise caused a massive headache like sensation, and Nadine squinted her lids, recoiling her head back at the offensive sound waves.

It quickly accelerated  to the point that Nadine could take it no longer, and she abruptly dropped the creature. Releasing it's antennae with utter annoyance at the way it screeched so. Hands then went to either side of her head, cupping her ears in attempts to protect from whatever damage was ensued by such a high-voltage whine. Though, by now it was probably too late, if any damage had been done. Through all of this, Nadine hadn't seen, nor noticed David running toward them, and it was only once she dropped the alien that she turned away from it-- and only then noticed him dropped to the ground, covering his ears (eyes?). However, she couldn't make out anything that was being said. Everything was muffled at best.

"What is that!?!?"

She screamed, trying to hear herself. It felt as though her efforts to speak only amounted to the sound of a normal spoken person-- even when she screamed.. And to speak on the normal level, it felt as though a whisper... Or a thought in the head given no voice.

Backing away from the site that she had dropped the alien, she watched it burrow itself back into the ground, and steer away from them, but only a short distance before the receptacles  sunk into the earth, and disappeared as well, leaving no sign as to where it was, or where it had gone. A feeling of dread quickly hit the pit of her stomach. They had to survive not only a new planet, but possibly a new predator. They may be prey, and not even know it.

Garrus winced slightly at a noise. He could tell it was a lifeform of some sort. After awhile of the sound not disappearing, he stood and headed out to the exit/entrance of the ship, passing the doctor's quarters on the way. As he reached the door the sound disappeared. He heard Nadine's screamed question as he stumbled down the ramp to the ground outside.

"What did you lot do?" He asks simply of them as he stands there. He held his left hand against his head, trying to dispell the dizzyness that had occured on his walk. His blue eyes were wide as he scanned the small crowd. His right hand shifted to where he usually kept his own small firearm. It wasn't there of course. He had stored it on the ship for the duration of the trip. Mistake number one. He thought to himself as he stumbled over to them, taking in the look of fright and pain. "Can you hear me at all?" He asked them, mouthing the words as well. Hoping one of them was at least focused on him enough to realise what he was saying. Hopefully one of them at least is focused enough to tell us what happened.

As the creature was dropped and it skittered back beneath the ground, Hannah stood there and finally let go of her ears. The ringing in them wouldn't stop anytime soon and she could only hear the faint sounds of their voices speaking to her. She looked up at the research scientist and then over at the others. The drop of one man to his knees had her raising a slender shaped brow in question of just how serious this was. She called toward the craft for the doctor to come out. It was obvious they all had suffered something from that little critter's screams.

"Is the doctor there? Wash are you okay in there? Everyone else okay? Can you hear me?"

She wasn't sure if they had all gone deaf or if it was just her. She looked back to the scientist and then to the ground again. Her fingers plugged into her ear canal and then back out trying to undo what damage was done. The blonde superior officer, whose title really didn't matter all that much now, thought if she could get her ears to pop it might take off the pressure and help her to hear again. Though in the end, she had no clue what that was or how it did what it did to them.  There was no telling what else could be out there now. One thing was for certain, they weren't alone.

Wash threw down the com. system to plug his ears. When he tried to reach the Captain all he got back was static then this earsplitting scream, that shook him to his very core, but the noise stopped just as fast as is started.

What in the hell was that?? he thought, Just what i needed, a headache for my headache... Slowly his ears stopped ringing, and he picked up to com. just in time to hear the captain finally responding.

"Is the doctor there? Wash are you okay in there? Everyone else okay? Can you hear me?"

Yes Captain, I'm here, reading you clear, not really loud after that obnoxious sound. What was that, never mind you can tell me when you're safe and back on board. You say you need the doctor, I'm going to assume the atmosphere is safe and send her out

Wash fiddled with the dials to communicate with the ship rather than the space suit mics. Hoping that the Captain was alright.

I wouldn't know what to do without the Captain...Not that I'm going
to start telling her that
he smiled to himself before going back to finding the doctor.

Hey Doc, looks like you're needed planet side; I don't know exactly what for, but after what I just heard, bring some headache pills..

With that all taken care of, Wash (finally) began inspecting the system to begin repair work.

It was like an eruption of awareness; that silent breath of calm before the storm when all seemed like just a dream. When everything was pregnant with wary anticipation. She had made a move to recover the man slumped to the ground; perhaps he had been effected moreso than she. At the current time, she only experienced a resounding deafness. Comparable to being trapped in water, and only able to hear the decibels that matched the wavelength unaffected by the wretched ear-peircing. Coupled with a dull cranial pain, similar to being unable to pop ones eardrums after descending some high height at great speed.

Bending beside the man, she proffered her hand in assistance, fully expecting him to receive the help. It was then that she noticed Garrus emerging from the bridge of the ship; his hands pressed desperately to the sides of his head in attempts to do what they all had done: Reduce the resounding wave of sound. He mouthed something, but she couldn't quiet hear it, or make out exactly what he was saying. Muffled muse at best, she cocked brows and squinted.

What? What was that?

She asked, unable to quite make out what his mouth was trying to articulate. Orbs drifted to Hannah as if she could perhaps give her some clue as to what he was saying, but to no avail, she returned her attentions to Garrus. (Assuming that David accepted her hand) Though, she moved, helping David up with a heaving grunt before responding.

I can't hear you clearly, say that again.

After the screaming finally ended, David tried to stand up but to no avail. His balance had taken quite the heavy hit after that attack on his ears.

''Damn it. My balance feels like i am standing on a boat in the middle of a storm, rocking the ship like crazy. The hell was that critter anyway?''

David then noticed Nadine walking to him and kneeling down, offering her hand. Nodding, he took her hand as she then helped him so he could stand up, holding him under his arm. He did feel a bit awkward though, as he wasn't used to being this close with a woman.

''Thanks.'' David said, as his hearing started to recover, bit by bit.

It appeared that the doctor had fiddled with some kind of device in the back of the ship. No one had seen it or knew it was there and suddenly, the Doctor was gone. Disappeared without a trace. It was unclear what had truly happened to her but nevertheless the crew and passengers could do nothing about it. It was almost as if there were a tear in time and space and she was sucked in and gone from their ranks forever (or at least until such a time she found a way back to them.)

Hannah still didn't hear the pilot very well and she sighed some and shook her head. She didn't understand anything coming from the communicator. She heard something faint coming from Nadine who was fairly close to her and she looked to the young woman and tilted her head slightly. It appeared they all were having some difficulty hearing. Whatever that creature had done it had impaired those around it to make it easier prey likely or to scare them off. The blonde captain looked at David as he spoke and tried to read his lips. She had only caught the last part of his words however.

"....rocking the ship like crazy. The hell was that critter anyway? Thanks."

She looked to the scientist and then back to David again. Her voice raised loud to compensate for her own lack of hearing more than trying to help them hear her. It was more of a default reaction that most people had. Her fingers pushed her hair back behind each ear and she leaned in some as well.

"A LOCAL ANIMAL LIFE APPARENTLY! I DON'T RECALL SEEING ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE! HAVE YOU?! THIS IS CRAZY. WHERE IS THAT FREAKING DOCTOR!??"

She looked around as if waiting for the doctor to make an appearance or at least for the pilot to come out. It looked like their numbers were dwindling and she began to fear for their livelihood with so many unknowns around them. Hannah wasn't sure when the moon or moons might rise and darkness might come upon them or how soon it happened. Was it like on earth? Did it all come suddenly or did it give you a bit of time to adjust? She knew they'd all have to stay inside the ship for the night for safety and maybe venture out early the following morning to explore the planet a bit more.

God Dammit! Wash yelled, looking at the lifeless console. Nothing was working except the emergency power they immediately turned on when they "landed"

Worthless piece of... sigh he slumped back in his chair, then realized he hadn't gotten a response from anyone, not a word. That's when he began to worry, nothing from the passengers, the doctor, or even Captain, and she almost always responds...

Well, better get out there he thought, got up and went to get his suit on, just in case there wasn't as much oxygen as they were expecting, or some other horrible, death inducing phenomenon was awaiting him.

But he mustered  up some courage as he got ready to go outside Don't worry Hannah he whispered, despite his own worries, I'm coming

Garrus winced and covered his ears at the inhumane yelling and screaming the two were performing. "Calm down! It's over! If you keep yelling everyone could go deaf!" He didn't yell it exactly. Only walked right over to them and said it rather loudly in one ear. He then glared at them, arms crossed as he waited for them all to calm down.

The Sgt. noticed the navigator coming out of the ship in full suit and grinned. At least the man had taken the care to take precautions. He had just run out here to see what was happening. Not the smartest thing he had ever done. He had noticed the creature being thrown away, but decided to keep that part of the story for the two who had caused it to scream the way it did. He hadn't seen any bleeding ears from those outside when it happened, but he was also pretty sure that there would be at least some damage to their hearing for the rest of their time here. Even longer if Earth had not discovered some sort of repairing methods for humans upon their return. If we ever return. He thought before he could stop himself.

''Thanks.''

Nadine nodded her acknowledgement, catching David's lip's movement as she supported him and wrapped his arm around her shoulder so she could catch his wrist with her other hand.  At least, that's what she thought he said. She could hear it just barely. Instead of clouded deafness was now this innate ringing. Typical for the return of hearing.

"A LOCAL ANIMAL LIFE APPARENTLY! I DON'T RECALL SEEING ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE! HAVE YOU?! THIS IS CRAZY. WHERE IS THAT FREAKING DOCTOR!??"

Hannah responded, yelling in order to compensate for the lacking ability to hear, but Nadine suddenly perceived what she had said far clearer than she had in moments just past. She recoiled, wanting to cup a hand to her ear closest to Hannah, but having David on her arm prevented any such movement.

"I don't know, but I can hear you loud and clear!"

Garrus seemed to agree when he winced at the yelling, and approached determinedly to reproach them for yelling. Or not being calm.. Or maybe both. Nadine shot him a glare right back, now that she could hear what he was saying. One that was more annoyed than anything.

"I AM calm!"

She paused, recollecting herself. Right. Not the way to portray the picture of what you just claimed to be. Though, it was when she had turned to Garrus that she noticed the warm glow of a moon just peeking over the horizon behind him. The sun.. Or what they thought to be the sun was matching in descent. A new sense of haste made itself aware when she looked up, and noted another moon in full rise over their heads. Two moons? Where were they?

"Regardless, we need to gather wood, and get back to the ship. We don't know what's out there, and we'll need to stay protected."

Nadine glanced over to Hannah, reassuringly. Yes. that's what they needed to do. And they needed to act fast. She took mental note of everyone there, counting the heads. It was then that the pilot decided to make his debut in full suit, and Nadine's brows knitted. The doctor hadn't come out yet. Where was she? Hadn't she heard the noise? Were they already starting to dwindle, and they had only just arrived? She waved the pilot over.

It would seem that the screeching noise only debilitated the victim for a temporary amount of time. Just enough for the creature to escape harm's grasp in the very least. Internally, Nadine was noting everything. The way the noise had certain effects on some, and not on others.. The creature's features, and the amount of time it had taken for hearing to return. If even barely. Nadine looked at the watch strapped to her wrist. Twenty minutes. Twenty minutes felt like an eternity when faced with the unknown.

As they spoke, Davids hearing returned, if only slightly. Though, most of the conversation was missed.

''....dless, ther wood... ack to the ship. Need to stay...", was all David could hear. As he struggled to hear the words being said, so he struggled to stand up.

''I really hope this condition of mine is only temporary..'' David thought to himself as he looked back and forth between Garrus and Nadine, trying to read their lips as they talked. which wasn't that succesful.

''I am sorry, but could you repeat that? A bit louder.'' David said, a bit louder this time. He noticed that he could hear a bit better now, as he could hear the sound of muffled footsteps, although barely. His balance was getting back to normal slowly. Turning his head to look at Garrus while he talked, David hesitated a bit before saying:

''I think I will be unable to be a historian for a little while. As I am unsure what damage that creature did to me, or if it is temporary or permament, I would like to do something that might be more useful. Right now I think our primary concern is survival. I might be exaggerating, but we hardly know anything at all about this planet. Besides, I can always write down these events later, thanks to this memory of mine.'' David finished with a tap to the forehead.

Wash finally headed towards the ship's outer hatch, stupid suit wouldn't go on but never the less, he got it on and ran outside. Looking around he noticed a few people, but honestly it didn't matter how many people were there, all he could think about was the captain, not that he would let her know that... Regardless he ran to the group to see what was wrong, and why no one was answering any of his communications. He did notice one person grinning at him for some reason, no idea why they all looked terrible but at least that was better than the alternative. Plus they all seemed to be at least recovering from whatever had happened.
Probably something to do with that.. thing earlier, whatever that was

As he approached he opened his helmet Clearly I didn't need this he said indicating to the suit, Is everyone alright, I couldn't get a hold of anyone, also no sign of the doctor

He looked worriedly over to Hannah but quickly hid it Any idea what happened?

With the shrieking sound still ringing in her ears, she sees Wash coming near her and gets up slowly, Damn, my head!, she says while covering her ears and trying to regain balance, What the hell was that sound....I can still hear it in my head! she speaks loud due to the sound covering her own voice. She sits on the ground, her right hand shaking, but she clenches her fist and hides the trembling immediately and tries to calm down.

Slowly her hearing had recovered enough to hear the others with more volume now. She sighed and shook her head some to clear out the remaining cobwebs inside. Hannah didn't hear David at all at first and as her hearing did improve she heard the pilot. Her eyes moved to him and she noted the worried look and smiled at him. A nod was given and she looked back to Nadine and the others again.

"Firewood for in the morning should be gathered and then we'll hole up in the ship for the night. Tomorrow hopes to be a better day. I think we're all okay otherwise. Good landing flyboy.  It could have been worse."

She gave the pilot a smile again and then looked toward the woman on the ground holding her ears. She sighed some and looked to Nadine and David then to Wash.

"Wash you try to calm her please.. Nadine you and David can go find some wood right? I'll watch camp and make sure everyone else is okay."

Hannah doled out orders as if it were second nature for her to do so. She was used to taking them more than giving them but it was all part and parcel to being the Captain on this vessel. She did what she had to do.

Pushing her hand back through her blonde locks she tugged them into the ponytail a bit tighter and sighed some. She really didn't know what they would do or how they'd get home now. It was almost hopeless but she'd not give up. Not until she found out for certain they were stuck on this planet. This New Earth so to speak. It could be worse however. The other passengers could have been worse looking or in worse shape otherwise. There were positives to this situation and she was going to focus on those the hardest.

Not waiting for confirmation on her orders, Hannah walked back to the ship, leaving the girl on the ground for Wash to deal with. Hannah's head ached and she didn't want to deal with hysterics when she was so very close to her own. Her eyes welled up with tears as she got further from the others and she took in a slow deep breath then stepped up into the ship.

Captain wasn't doing to good, and Wash knew it but he would have to deal with her and the ship later. Right now he would listen to her orders, not that she had to, he would have done it anyway.

Some people call it pig headed, but Wash was a gentleman and it bothered him greatly to see women in pain and or crying. He didn't like anyone upset around him, but it just wasn't the same feeling with men. He took off the helmet and calmly walked to the woman sitting on the ground.

Hey there, just give it a few seconds, it should go away. I'm Wash, pilot as well as other things he grinned broadly You're Ms. Blake, correct?

Wash knew better than to flirt but sometimes he just couldn't help himself, Besides he thought We're going to be here a while, why not be friendly with people... he dismissed any further thoughts and turned his attention back to the woman.

Do you think you can stand or would you like me to carry you? he grinned agian

"Ugh my head..." Beck mumbled while looking at the man in front of her, "Call me Beck, pleasantries don't work" she says, "Yes, I can stand on my own, thank you" Beck smiled at Wash and stands up, though dizzy, cleaning her jacket and pants of dust. "I think I'm going to go searching for wood" she says going in the wasteland, searching for something that resembles wood "God damn ship" she mumbled to herself "All that money dumped in that wreck" she says and throws a rock towards the ship.

"I need to calm down" she thought. She continues searching for wood, carefully not to stumble in some of those 'plants' that screamed not just 20 minutes ago.

As the conversation went on, Davids hearing started to get better and better. The sound of footsteps wasn't as muffled anymore and he could hear the conversations for the most part, as long as they speaked loud enough. A bit higher than the average tone. He was still dependent on Nadine to keep his balance in check though.

''Looks like I will have to depend on you for a little while more. Sorry.'' David said turning, feeling somewhat awkward once more. He always feel awkward when he talks to women like this. He always feels out of place somehow.

Seeing Wash coming out in a space suit made David raise his left eyebrow along with a slight grin on his face.

''A huge step for america. A small step for humanity.'' David said with a slight hint of irony.

David prattled on about something that Nadine caught bits and pieces of, but didn't really pay close attention to. Her attention was on the dire need to get moving, and here she was with a grown man hanging onto her for support. The irony was astoundingly hilarious. How she; a tom-boyish nature, who was balls-to-the-wall do-it-myself kind of girl who wasn't afraid of getting her hands dirty.. someone who rarely, if ever, asked for help from anyone.. she was with the vertigo'd historian. Gritting her teeth, she suffered through it regardless, albeit not exactly thrilled. This trip was proving to teach her far more than she had intended.. And not on the life of planets, but her own life. Herself.

A woman that Nadine hadn't noticed before struggled to stand nearby, and Nadine's gaze flickered to her with an arch of her slender brow. Who is she? The thought was interrupted as soon as it begun when Hannah's voice pierced the  slowly receding silence.

"…Nadine, you and David can go find some wood, right?…"

The pilot closed the distance, then, and Nadine gave him a nod of her head in acknowledgement. David's voice murmured something else, and she looked over at him, hands still gripped beneath his shoulders, her body weighted to the side that supported him.

"A huge step for america. A small step for humanity."

Nadine chuckled. Yeah…

Sighing, Nadine nodded. Turning her chin to look at the man she still held, though she had now released a great deal of her support and he was standing largely on his own, she thrust her chin in the direction of the line of forestry. "I think we'll find something over there.. What do you say? Can you walk on your own?" She let him steady himself for a moment, spotting her hands around his shoulders until she was sure he was somewhat confident before she started for the trees. Knowing he would follow, she kept her pace slow just in case he was still a bit wobbly, and wanted to keep up.

"I think we'll find something over there.. What do you say? Can you walk on your own?"

Davids hearing had fully recovered by the time she had finished her sentence. Sighing a sigh of relief, as the damage didn't turn out to be permament. As she started to walk, so did he, albeit at a slightly slower pace. He was a bit hesitant about walking without Nadine's support, but it turned out he could handle himself pretty well as his balance had returned along with his hearing. While they walked into the forest, David took the time to savor the moment. Listening to the sound of footsteps, the whistling of the wind and the soft whisper of the tree branches. It struck to him that the world had been untouched by the parasite known as human. Nothing manmade could be seen anywhere. Not yet at the very least.

As they walked into the forest, David looked around for a suitable tree and perhaps anything that might be edible. It never hurts to stock up on food after all, a lesson he had to learn in Vietnam. The hard way. The trees here were somewhat odd, their branches entwining eachother like spirals, reaching out into the sky, the leaves covering the branches, making it look as if it was the sky instead, small sunrays slipping past the thick mass of leaves.

''This is...quite the scenery, don't you agree?'' David looked around, his voice nearly cracking in excitement, his face grinning like that of a childs. He had to calm down as he had no idea what dangers there were out there, he would rather not meet a creature like that again.
