It's a methane-oxygen rocket engine being developed for NASA, for use on the CEV to bring it back from the moon.  Interactions between the supersonic exhaust and the air create the 'shock diamonds'.

That's a beautiful ray-gun. It's pleasant how hard work of sciencests can produce results that turn out to be suprisingly nice also from the aestethic point of view.

I think I saw a story during the week that they'd successfully tested a mach 10 scram jet in Oz. Also pretty neat.
