I don't think I used a strategy guide for any Final Fantasy to beat it - I bought one for X-2, embarrassingly, but never used it except to see what else there was when I had finished the game.
I did use the internet after beating the ones I'd beaten to see what else I could do, though.

Edit:  I'm a big fat liar.  It took me ten years to beat seven, I had seen more than enough information to spoil the game in the interim.

You keep a tally sheet to figure out how close you are to uncursing that blasted shield, and have no issues about taking it into boss battles while you're waiting.

It is indeed 6.  I've been unintentionally using the Tower of the Fanatics as a leveling device.
