Arr, mateys!  The Good Fortune will soon be settin' sail, so prepare yourselves.  Go ahead and chatter away amongst yourselves here, but remember the Pirate's Code!  Don't give away any secrets.  ;)

About the name: The Good Fortune was an 18-gun brigantine captained by the pirate Bartholomew Roberts, aka Black Bart, who in a brief four year career captured hundreds of vessels.  The ship was once victim of a mutiny -- a crewman named Thomas Anstis was given charge of her, and struck out on his own while en route to Africa, with the blessings of the other crew members.  And perhaps the Good Fortune will change hands again...

Learn to talk like a pirate!

  • Aft – Towards the stern
  • Avast - "Avast Ye!" from the Dutch term for 'hold fast' and means "Stop and pay attention."
  • Bilge – The bilge is the compartment at the bottom of the hull of a ship or boat where water collects so that it may be pumped out of the vessel at a later time.
  • Black Spot - a death threat among pirates made of a black spot or mark on a scrap of paper; used to vote to remove troublemakers.
  • Bow - the front portion of the ship
  • Cat o' nine tails – A short nine-tailed whip kept by the bosun's mate to flog sailors. When not in use, the cat was kept in a baize bag, hence the term "cat out of the bag"
  • Crow's nest (also Masthead) – Specifically a masthead constructed with sides and sometimes a roof to shelter the lookouts from the weather
  • Dance the Hempen Jig - To hang
  • Davy Jones's Locker - the imaginary place at the ocean bottom that holds dead sailors and pirates...a reference to death. Davy Jones was said to be an evil spirit lurking at sea, waiting to escort dead sailors or pirates to his place or locker at the bottom of the waters.
-To be in Davy's Grip: To be close to death, or frightened.
-To see you to Davy Jones: To threaten to kill some one
  • Drivelswigger - one who reads about nautical terms too much
  • Fore, foreward – Towards the bow
  • Gangplank – A movable bridge used in boarding or leaving a ship at a pier
  • Hempen Halter- The hangman's noose
  • Hogshead- a large barrel or cask holding 63 to 140 gallons, usually referring to alcohol
  • Hornswaggle - To cheat or defraud, often of money or belongings
  • Jack Tar (or simply Tar) - generic nickname for a sailor
  • Jacob's Ladder - the rope ladder used to climb aboard the ship
  • Keelhauling – Maritime punishment: to punish by dragging under the keel of a ship
  • Kissing the gunner's daughter – bend over the barrel of a gun for lashing with a cane or cat
  • Landlubber - 'lubber' was an old English word for a big, slow, clumsy person, a person not very skilled or at ease with ship life
  • Mess – An eating place aboard ship
  • Monkey - A small cannon
  • Powder Monkey - a gunner's assistant
  • Port (also Larboard)- left
  • Sextant – Navagational instrument used to measure a ship's latitude and longitude
  • Shiver me timbers! - akin to "Blow me down!", an expression of shock or disbelief
  • Starboard (also Steerboard)- right
  • Stern - the rear part of the ship
  • Swinging the lead –
      1. Measuring the depth of water beneath a ship using a lead-weighted sounding line. Regarded as a relatively easy job, thus:
      2. Feigning illness etc to avoid a hard job.
  • Yard – The horizontal spar from which a square sail is suspended

Pirate Captain (1) (elected)
Ability: In the event of a tie during votes, the captain chooses who will walk the plank.  Arrr!

Mutineers (3)
Ability: Can choose to remove one (1) crew member each night.
Goal: To kill the remaining crew and take over the ship.

Surgeon (1)
Ability: Can choose to save one (1) crew member each night. If the chosen crew member was also voted to be killed by the mutineers, that pirate will not die.  The Surgeon can protect him or herself once each game.
Goal: To kill all the mutineers and survive.

Cook (1)
Ability: Can choose to have one (1) crew member's role revealed privately to him/her each night, from the god of pirates (Valerian).
Goal: To kill all the mutineers and survive.

Pirate Crew
Pirates who do not have a specific goal are simply the pirate crew, the backbone of the ship. Their goal is to kill all the mutineers via the lottery and survive.

Note: Please do not vote to lynch yourself.

Just as in the usual game of Mafia, any player can lie, deceive, or mislead as much as they think they can get away with, all in the name of having fun.  Please don't quote anything directly from any PMs you might send or receive regarding the game; but any information you might get that way can be repeated in your own words as much as you like.

The traditional day/night cycle will remain.  The first night, of course, the captain is killed at the hands of the Mutineers.  The next day, the players will vote first on a new Captain; and second on a character to be removed, and will discover if their choice was a wise one.  That night, the Mutineers will claim another life, unless the Ship's Surgeon happens to intervene.

Any rules questions can be posted in OOC or sent to me via PM.

Just to clarify: is one person killed each night, or two (one from lynching and one from the mutineers)?

Statistics are like a bikini; what they reveal is significant, but what they conceal is even more important.

Kip

Two people per day/night cycle -

One during the day through a lynching...  that hempen halter is a killer! (see what I did there?)

and

One during the night from the mutineers.

Saku is on the list!

Sorry for the delay -- I thought I might have an eleventh player, but it seems not.  A new thread will be up for the game itself soonish, followed closely by PMs to everyone giving their roles.  :)

It's starting now.  :)  Everyone should have gotten a PM with their role; so post away!  If anyone has questions, post them here or PM them to me, and enjoy.   ;D

I realize that pirate captains probably did have a short average life expentancy... but this is ridiculous!  Heh.

xD Well, they make easier targets, I think... the mutineers probably want to get one of their own into that spot to be an effective tiebreaker.

A terrible loss to the pirate crew!  Sorry, guys.   :-(

Also, I haven't forgotten the Roman game.  Since there's a three-day weekend coming up, both in the States and in Canada, I'll wait until after that to start it up, but I'll probably get it going on Tuesday the eighth, assuming enough players.  :)

The last time it seemed to be heading towards a tie -- I think it was for sheriff in the Salem witches game -- I was all set for a runoff election with the top two finishers.  But that won't work here, not with so few people left.

What do you think -- try a round of lynch voting without a captain at all, and see what happens?  That seems like the best option at this point...

I'm picturing these last four pirates glaring at each other, brandishing daggers, and refusing to close their eyes to sleep.  Heh.

We may have to call it a draw, unfortunately, but I'm open to other suggestions if anyone has 'em.

Aiden, I'm not sure you're allowed to survive until the end on these games.  ;)

Did you want to try another vote for captain, then?  We can give that a shot if you'd like...

Oh my god! I love these kinds of games! Valerian, any chance of a round II?

Valerian

I probably will start up another round of some Mafia-style game, yes, though the setting isn't decided yet.  If you're approved, send me a PM -- though these games are non-adult, unapproved members can't join, since you do need PM access to play (for super-secret plotting and scheming).  But thanks for the interest.  :)
