How does the game work?

The game is a strategy and sneaking game, not a role play. Though plenty of 'role playing' is done in the 'flavor text', the primary point of the game is to discover the Vampires or to get rid of the Estate Residents, depending on your alignment. The players are each assigned a role before the game begins, with Estate Residents and Vampires. The goal for either side is to eliminate the opposite. Feel free to make descriptions of what you are doing, have fun with it, etc, but these will not affect the game-play, only the voting truly affects the game.

After receiving roles, the game begins by electing an Estate Keeper to be the 'law' of the Estate The Keeper will make deciding votes if there is a tie in a lynch vote. If the voting for the Keepr is tied, the GM will roll dice to decide who will become Keeper.

Night will fall after the Keeper is elected. The Vampires will learn who their colleagues are, and they will decide on one Resident to kill during the night. Some of the special roles can stop a Resident from dying (see the Roles below). All roles that work at night will have their abilities used or left for another night before morning comes. When morning comes, a post will be made outlining what had happened during the night (if someone died, or if they didn't).

When a person dies, by assassination or by lynching, their role is revealed. When there are killing roles other than the Vampires, no distinction to why someone died during the night will be made.

When day comes, the Residents will gather and vote on someone to lynch, someone who they think must pay for the deaths of the Residents. Everyone will vote, and eventually the person with the most votes will be taken away to their death. Some of the special roles can save others from lynching, or force lynching to occur on a different person than selected (see the Roles below). Night will fall, and the cycle of night-day will repeat.

How do you win?
>>The goal of the Residents is to try and find out who the Vampires are and to eliminate them before they kill more innocents. The Residents win when the last Vampire is eliminated.
>>The goal of the Vampires is to kill the innocents before their identities are discovered. The Vampires win when their numbers equal or outweigh the numbers of the Residents.

Notes
-Once the game has started, no new players can join unless requested by the GM to replace a member who had to leave.
-You must have access to PMs to play this game. I'm sorry unapproved members.
-The game decides your alignment, not your friendships.
-Your role will be PMd to you before the game begins. Approximately 1/4 of the players will have Vampire roles.
-The Vampires are made aware of who the other Vampires are, after the Keeper is chosen.
-You are required to vote. You may not vote for yourself. If you do not vote for several rounds, the GM may take you out of the game to keep it running smoothly.
-Campaigning for votes (for Keeper) is not necessary.
-Vampires may not attack other Vampires.
-If someone is attacked and kept alive by a special role, they must be a Resident. (Use this to your advantage specials - you know those people are on your side. Speak to them!)
-The game is a game of lies and deception. Lying about your role, motivation, and what others have said/done in private is encouraged.
-Villagers are encouraged to talk amongst each other in private. Please use forum PMs, and add Saffron to any messages sent.
-Remember that everything you hear could be a lie... who can you really trust?

*Thanks to Xillen for the outline, and for starting the ideas of these games.

Rules for the Forum Games

Dead characters don't talk. If/When you die, you should not post in the active game thread until the game has ended. Do not discuss the game with anyone of the living players, and do not discuss the game where living players can see it. This applies especially to the OOC threads. You can always chat with your fellow ghosties, and with the GM, but make sure no one living can read it.

There's no copy machine. You cannot directly quote/copy anything game related that was told to you anywhere other than in the active game. For example, you can tell others what role you received (and lie about it), but you cannot actually quote the text stating your role. Likewise, you can tell others what people told you (and make stuff up), but you can't actually quote what they said to you. You can of course quote anything said in the game thread, since everyone can read it. For clarification, copying someone's text without using the board quote tags is still quoting and still against the rules.

Monitor the game, not the players.b Do not go check the Who's Online often to see what players are doing. Do not go check when each player was last online right after a certain action occured. Base your opinions on what players are saying, not on outside elements!

The game decides the team. If you're a bad guy, and your best buddy is not, then so be it. You are still supposed to kill each other. Do not tell anyone your role, just because they're a friend of you.

Games are for fun. This is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. Keep this in mind when playing, and don't try to think anything bad about the other players. See them as enemies or suspects in the game, but friends outside the game!

Keep the GM entertained. Whenever you send another player a PM regarding the game, send it to me as well. I'd like to read up on the discussion between players :)

Rules for Voting

Voting is mandatory. You cannot abstain from voting. After all, a major part of the game is based on deducting the voting pattern of other players. Preferably, everyone should vote as fast as possible, but of course people also have other things on their mind, so it's impractical to force people to vote within a certain time limit. However, if you have time to reply to the thread, you also have time to post your vote. (Your first post should contain a vote, when applicable).

Please do not hold back your vote until there are more votes in. If everyone starts thinking like that, then eventually nobody would vote anymore. Just bring out a random vote, and change your vote at a later time, if you found a more suitable target.

Votes can always be changed. Until a "Final Lynch Vote" tally is posted, you may change your vote as many times and as often as you like.

Please do not consider the person that votes first a 'bad guy', simply for the reason that they voted first. That person just happens to be the person to check the thread first, and if everyone always accuses the person first to vote, then nobody will vote first anymore, meaning nobody will vote anymore.

Do not vote based on game experience. Just because LadySky plays in every game, or Saffron is the GM in most games, that doesn't make them a target. The point of the game is to play well, and I will not accept votes based on "Well they're a strong player... we should take them out first." (This applies to lynching and assassinations).

Vote in bold. Whenever you cast a vote on someone, be sure to put the name in [ b ]bold[ /b ], so I can easily check who is being voted on.

You cannot vote on yourself (for both the sheriff election and the lynch). You can only vote on others. Of course, two villagers can make a deal to vote on each other.

No need to run for election. You can be elected to Keeper against your will, if you happen to receive the most votes.

Do not edit your posts. If you change your opinion, make a new post with your new vote. Everything that's said in the thread should be visible at all times.

Estate Residents

Suite Owners
  • Suite Owners form the core of the community. They do not possess special powers, and only have the power of their own vote in the democratic system.
  • Usually, around half of the players are Suite Owners.
  • Note, if the Childe is scried upon by the Vampire Hunter or killed, they will appear as a Suite Owner.

Soulmates
  • Soulmates are just like Suite Owners, lacking any special powers. However, they have one advantage, which is complete trust in their fellow Soulmate.
  • Soulmates always come in pairs of two. At the start of the game, when the Soulmates receive their role, they are also informed about which player is the other Soulmate.
  • Soulmates have no special connection to each other. If one Soulmate dies, the other Soulmate can still live on.
  • In addition, a Soulmate could be turned into a Vampire by the Sire, without the other Soulmate noticing.

Vampire Hunter
  • The Vampire Hunter can summon visions about other villagers.
  • Every night, the Vampire Hunter chooses one player other than themselves (sent in by PM), and in the morning, they will learn what alignment the chosen player has (unless they die or are bitten by the Sire).
  • They will see the result as "(Name) is an Innocent" or "(Name) is a Vampire"
  • The Vampire Hunter is in all other regards like a Suite Owner. There is only a single Vampire Hunter.

Angel
  • The Angel can visit other players in an apparition form. The player will not know the Angel has visited them during the night.
  • On every other night (starting from the first time the ability is used), the Angel can learn the specific role of one player other than themselves. The roll of 1d20 will determine if they succeed or fail at learning the other player's role (1-10 fail, 11-20 success).
  • The Childe will be seen as a Suite Owner. The Innocent Sibling will be seen as a Suite Owner. The Vampire Sibling will be seen as a Vampire.
  • The Angel is in all other regards like a Suite Owner. There is only one Angel.

Bodyguard
  • The Bodyguard defends the fellow Residents against the Vampires.
  • Every night, the BodyGuard chooses one player (sent in by PM), who is defended against the Vampires, the Sire and the Mad Scientist.
  • The BodyGuard can choose to defend themselves.
  • The BodyGuard cannot defend one person during two consecutive nights. They must choose a different player than the player they guarded during the last night, though they can guard players again that were guarded during earlier nights.
  • If the Vampires attack the guarded villager, their attack fails. There will be no deaths due to the Vampires that night. If the Doctor still has their special ability, they will learn that they cannot find any victims, which should inform them that the Bodyguard did a good job.
  • If the Sire decides to bite the guarded villager, the conversion fails, wasting the Sire's ability.
  • The chosen player will not be informed that he is guarded. If the chosen player is attacked, he will not be informed.
  • If the guardian successfully guards someone against an attack, he will not be informed about this incident.
  • The guardian is in all other regards like a peasant. There is only a single guardian.
  • The guardian cannot save someone from being lynched or dying to sibling connection.

Doctor
  • The Doctor has the power to save one villager from the brink of death.
  • As long as the Doctor has not used thei special power, they will receive a PM every night, with information about who was attacked during that night. Whomever is attacked is obviously an innocent, and can be trusted.
  • The Doctor can choose to save the person, or save their ability for a later night.
  • If the Doctor saves the person, that person will not be informed about being attacked or healed. Likewise, the rest of the villagers won't be informed about the incident (though they probably discover that there are no deaths in the morning).
  • The Doctor is in all other regards like a peasant. There is only a single Doctor.
  • The Doctor may heal themselves if the vampires decide to attack the Doctor.
  • The Doctor cannot save someone from being lynched, being poisoned by the Mad Scientist, being turned into a vampire by the Sire, or dying to sibling connection.

Priest
  • The Priest has a vial of holy water, that is able to discern a Vampire from a regular Resident.
  • One time during the game, when a Resident is about to get lynched, the Priest can test that villager, by pouring the holy water over them.
  • If the Resident happens to be a Vampire or the Sire, the water will prove them guilty, and they will still be lynched.
  • Otherwise, the Resident's innocence is proved, and nobody will be lynched that day.
  • The Priest is in all other regards like a Suite Owner. There is only a single Priest.
  • The Priest can use the water on themselves, to prove their own innocence.
  • Note that both the Childe and the Resident lover of a Vampire appear innocent when tested by the Priest.
  • The Priest cannot save someone from being killed by Vampires, being poisoned by the Mad Scientist, being bitten by the Sire, or dying to sibling connection.

Mad Scientist
  • The Mad Scientist, with his poisonous concoctions, has the ability to take out one of the Vampires during the night.
  • During a single night, except for the first night, the Mad Scientist can choose one other player.
  • The chosen player dies (regardless of their role), unless defended by the Bodyguard.
  • If the Mad Scientist chooses the player defended by the Bodyguard or attacked by the Vampires, the ability is wasted.
  • Nobody will be informed about the incident, other than the additional death in the morning.
  • Players will not be informed if someone dies to a Vampire attack or the Mad Scientist's poison.
  • The Mad Scientist is in all other regards like a Suite Owner. There is only a single Mad Scientist.

Innocent Sibling
  • There are two siblings, one is an innocent, the other is a Vampire. They are aware of each other's existance.
  • The Siblings must work together, and can fully trust each other.
  • If one sibling dies, the other dies as well, due to their sibling connection. If the siblings die during the night, the other players will not be informed why the other sibling has died, or that they were siblings.
  • The goal of the Siblings in to kill all other players and be the last two standing.
  • The Vampire Hunter nor Angel cannot see if someone is a sibling.

Vampire Roles

Vampires
  • Vampires are Residents cursed with Porphyria.
  • Vampires know who their fellow vampires are after the Estate Keeper is chosen.
  • Every night, the vampires must together choose a single player to eat.
  • Vampires cannot decide to eat other vampires.
  • The chosen player dies, unless defended by the Bodyguard or saved by the Doctor.
  • During the day, Vampires pose themselves as Suite Owners, hiding among the other Estate Residents. Since no one knows yet that they are Vampires, they get to vote just like the other Residents.
  • Usually, around a quarter of the players are Vampires, unless the Childe or Sire are included.

Childe
  • The Childe is a Vampire that has enough human blood in their veins to pass on as a normal human.
  • The Childe appears as a Suite Owner, when scried upon by the Vampire Hunter or Angel, or when killed.
  • The Childe appears as innocent, when tested by the Priest.
  • The Childe is in all other regards like a Vampire. There is only a single Childe.
  • The Childe knows the Vampires after the Estate Keeper is elected, and gets to vote along with them.

Sire
  • The Sire is the original Vampire that has the power to curse another human with Porphyria.
  • During a single night, the Sire can choose one other player.
  • The chosen player will be turned into a Vampire, unless defended by the Bodyguard or killed during the night.
  • If the Sire chooses the player defended by the Bodyguard or killed during the night, the ability is wasted.
  • When the chosen player is turned into a Vampire, they will lose their old role. If they were the Vampire Hunter or the Angel, they do not learn the role of the target for this night.
  • The chosen player will learn who the other Vampires are. The other Vampires will learn who the new Vampire is.
  • The Sire is in all other regards like a Vampire. There is only a single Sire.
  • The Sire knows the Vampires after the Estate Keeper is elected, and gets to vote along with them.
  • If the Sire is the last remaining Vampire, they cannot bite one player and kill another player during the same night.

Vampire Sibling
  • There are two siblings, one is an innocent, the other is a Vampire. They are aware of each other's existance.
  • The Siblings must work together, and can fully trust each other.
  • If one sibling dies, the other dies as well, due to their sibling connection. If the siblings die during the night, the other players will not be informed why the other sibling has died, or that they were siblings.
  • The goal of the Siblings in to kill all other players and be the last two standing.
  • The Vampire Hunter nor Angel cannot see if someone is a sibling.

Other roles

Thief

  • The Thief has the ability to steal the role of any other player before the game begins.
  • They choose the player to steal the role from, and are not aware of what the role is.
  • Alternately they may choose the extra role card.
  • If they should steal a players role, the player will become whatever the extra role card is.
  • The Thief must choose either the extra role card or to steal a player's role.
