Shadows of the Sword Coast

I'm planning on running a favorite campaign I've made in the Forgotten Realms, heavy on roleplaying and both character development and character interaction. Ultimately, I want interesting characters with hopes, dreams, fears, flaws, and if you want, even a fetish or two (you can feel free to use the Book of Erotic Fantasy or the Book of Unlawful Carnal Knowledge for inspiration). That will keep the game fresh and alive and keep us coming back for more.

As for the details of the game:

Where? Waterdeep, the largest port city on the Sword Coast. We won't stay there permanently, and the characters will have the ability and necessity (at times) to visit other cities, but we will start in Waterdeep.

When? 1368 DR, ten years after the Time of Troubles, in the Year of the Banner, so your character will remember the Time of Troubles.

Playable Races? Human, half elf, gold elf, moon elf, tiefling, and aasimar.

Character Ages? Bear in mind the time it takes to become level 9 (or ECL 9) and to gain that amount of experience. Humans should be in their early 20s at minimum, and other races should be at equivalent ages. If your character is Middle Aged or older, don't forget to alter their stats accordingly. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/description.htm#tableAgingEffects

Sourcebooks allowed? PHB, DMG, Heroes of Horror, Libris Mortis, and any Forgotten Realms 3.5 sourcebook. Anything else, run it by me first and as long as it's reasonable and not game-breaking, I'll probably allow it. Any build is subject to veto at DM's discretion, but I'd only do that for powergaming or something game-breaking.

Sourcebooks not allowed? Unearthed Arcana (except for Cloistered Clerics and flaws).

Starting level? 9th level (or an ECL of 9 if your race needs an ECL adjustment). That would put your characters at far enough advanced to have become comfortable in your skillsets, but just beginning to appear on important people's radar.

Ability Scores? We'll be using the point buy system with 34 points, as well as the extra point you get at level 4 and the one at level 8.

Hit Points? You get full hit points + CON for first level and then half of your hit dice + 1 + CON bonus for each level after that.

Starting gold? 36,000gp. Spend it wisely, with no more than half of it (18,000gp) on any one item.

Alignments? Any non-evil alignment is allowed. You guys are the good guys. It's possible to have someone of evil alignment fighting on the side of the good guys, but I would need extremely good reasons to allow an evil character for this.

Psionics? At the moment, no. Sorry if you really like them.

House Rules? Read them! They may be important for how you design your character build.
"Find them here."
1. When resting overnight, you recover (1+Con modifier)hp per level or 1hp per level, whichever is larger, if you have been damaged, up to your full hp. (Normally, the DnD 3.5 rules say that you get 1hp per night, or 2 for a full day's bed rest, but that penalizes those with high Constitution scores since they have more hitpoints to heal to get to their maximum. Those with higher Constitution scores should be faster healers, not slower healers. I think this makes things more fair, especially at lower levels when healing magic may be hard to come by.)

2. Short swords deal slashing damage or piercing, whichever is necessary to overcome the opponent's damage reduction. This is because the sword is light and easily maneuverable and able to be stabbed outward for piercing damage like a rapier or swung like a longsword for slashing damage.

3. Characters that are capable of turning undead may choose the effect they want to use, whether it is to repel them or to damage them, and may use either the rules from the Player's Handbook or Complete Divine, respectively, depending on which effect they would like to have. They may choose either effect each time they attempt to turn undead.

4. A natural 20 on an Attack Roll is a critical hit. There's no need for a critical threat roll on a natural 20. If the weapon has a larger range, such as 19-20, any d20 roll less than 20 does require a critical threat roll.

5. Some piercing or slashing weapons may be used to deal bludgeoning damage when used with a different technique than the conventional one, but at a -4 penalty on the Attack Roll (as an improvised weapon, since the weapon was not designed with inflicting that type of damage as its primary function). The damage of a slashing or piercing weapon used to inflict bashing damage (such as when a fighter uses the pommel of his longsword to bash in the skull of a zombie) is equivalent to a club of one size category smaller than the weapon used (so a longsword's pommel would deal the same damage as a small club, 1d4).

6. The damage from multiple sources of the celestial brilliance spell do not stack.

Flaws and Traits? You may take a maximum of 2 flaws and a maximum of 1 trait, and they must affect your character and be roleplayed accordingly.

Regional/Background Bonus Feats? You may take ONE regional or background bonus feat in addition to any other feats you have.

Character Backgrounds? They need to be somewhat consistent with your character class. For instance, a cleric or paladin should have a background that includes his or her training in the religious rituals and the church of his or her deity. A wizard should have a background that includes who taught him, where he learned the Art, and how he felt about studying ancient tomes for weeks on end. A rogue could have a background as a tavern-dancer (clothed or unclothed), cut-purse, lady-of-the-evening, or any of the myriad tasks a rogue can perform for money. I think we all get the point. Furthermore, at 9th level, your character has had some adventures, may have run with a guild related to their profession (which may not necessarily be their character class; you could easily have a fighter who worked as a bouncer, plumber, mason, carpenter, a shipwright, or a city guard when he needed a steady income or a wizard who worked as a librarian, bookbinder, historian, herbalist, magic item store clerk, etc.), may have run with an adventuring party (with potential plot hooks, romantic liasons between adventurers with potential torches carried for former lovers or romantic liasons that resulted in relationships that are still alive and may have led to your character starting a family!), or may have lived and worked at a temple for their entire lives (and would have made friendships, enemies, and perhaps romantic liasons among the others at the temple or frequent visitors.). Your backstory should take into consideration that you're making a level 9 (or ECL 9) character with a lot of experience.

Sexual Backgrounds/Preferences? You don't have to share it on the character sheet if you don't want to, but at least let me know via PM what your character's sexual orientation or preference is (It's DnD, so race as well as gender preference; does he like female elves? Does she have a thing for dwarves? Etc.), whether they have been intimate with another person in the past (your character would interact differently in some situations depending on whether he or she is a virgin, moderately sexually experienced, or very sexually experienced), any fetishes they may have (the Book of Erotic Fantasy and Book of Unlawful Carnal Knowledge have some decent ideas), and anything else you think may be relevant, especially if it is relevant to how your character would act around NPCs (Example: Your male elf ranger has a thing for large breasted, brunette, human females and is revived after a hunt turned deadly by a large breasted, brunette, human female druid). Does your character have a regular romantic partner or partners? Has your character ever had children, and with whom? If your character is female, does she use nararoot (a form of herbal female birth control that lasts between 1 and 2 weeks per dose, with one dose costing about 2sp)? If your character is male, does he use cassil (a form of male herbal birth control that makes a man infertile, though not impotent, for about a week per dose, but is more expensive than nararoot at 1gp per dose)? Does he or she use magical forms of birth control, such as a spell that renders someone infertile for a specific period of time (there are some in BoEF and BoUCK) and if so, how does he or she have access to this magic? Does your character have other sexual kinks? Is he or she an exhibitionist or a voyeur?

Deities? In the Forgotten Realms, the gods exist and there's no doubt about it. They can exert control over the elements, weather, biology, luck, and virtually every aspect of mortal or immortal life if properly encouraged. Nearly every character will have a patron deity that they feel either drawn to or feel that they can relate to the most. Clerics and paladins would feel this even more intensely, having been personally "called" by a deity into service, almost always at a young age. It's moderately well-known that those with no patron deities will be plastered into Kelemvor's Wall of the Faithless when their soul reaches his city after death, and that the only way to avoid this is to have a patron deity that the individual remains on reasonably good terms with. Consider the type of deity your character would follow, and his or her deity may have varying levels of influence on the backstory of the character. Consider how the same spells granted by different deities may appear different stylistically (a magic missile granted to a cleric of Bane may appear as a glowing, gauntleted fist hurtling toward your enemies, while the same spell granted to a cleric of Tymora may look like large, golden coins pelting the target, and the same spell granted to a cleric of Nobanion may appear as lions' heads hurtling toward the enemy and biting down when they strike. The damage wouldn't change, but there's no reason the flavor text can't make things more interesting.

Divine Healing? I am a lover of flavor text to make otherwise routine actions more interesting for the other players. When making a character capable of divine healing, how might they go about that differently for the different gods and goddesses? A priest or druid of Chauntea might provide divine healing by rubbing soil on the wound as well as praying and casting the spell. A priestess of Loviatar may ask for her goddess to heal someone's wounds by whipping a willing volunteer (nonlethal damage) and then healing the equivalent amount of damage that the volunteer received. A priestess of Sharess may heal through or during sex acts. The healing a priest of Mystra provides may look like engulfing the wound in harmless blue fire which dissipates, leaving the wound healed once it's gone. Be creative with your flavor text, and if you'd like a suggestion for potential flavor text for your character or you think your idea may be going overboard, ask me! I'd be happy to make suggestions. (Of course, those don't apply to divine healing during a battle, which would be done quickly, but the flavor text there could be written after the battle, when the cleric could perform the sacrament that he or she uses to thank the deity for the magic that he or she was granted for healing.)

Moral Shortcomings? Although there are no stats for these, unless your character is entirely selfless they will have a limit to their moral uprightness, assuming they are Good rather than Neutral. Consider (and let me know via PM!) what your character would be willing to do to achieve their goals, protect their loved ones, gain more power, etc. What vices do they have (gambling, booze, prostitutes, etc.)? What would tempt them to turn their back on their party, on their families, or on their deity? For many of those, your character may never be tempted to those depths, but let your answer reflect (among other things), your character's personality and alignment. This will help to make your character feel more real and much more interesting.

Hopes, Dreams, Wishes, and Fears? Via a PM (not publicly), tell me what your character's hopes, dreams, wishes, and their fears are, and what YOUR hopes, dreams, and wishes for your character are, since they may not be the same. Concerning fears, take into consideration any family they may have, potential loneliness of the adventuring life (is your character afraid they'll never find a soul mate?), and any traumatic experiences they may have had that still haunt their nightmares.

A Skillpoint Variant You May Want To Use: At character creation, the player may select up to two cross-class skills from his or her original class (the character class before multiclassing) and make them class-skills, as long as he or she selects the same number of class-skills from the original class to make cross-class skills. Essentially, if you want to change the flavor of your class, you can take two skills that would be cross-class and make them class (for the purposes of spending skill points) as long as you turn two class skills into cross-class. The only penalty is that those skills that you made cross-class cannot be made class skills again unless you multiclass into a class where they are cross-class. Make sure you mention this in your character sheet to prevent confusion.

Should I Choose A Class That's Already Been Chosen? Absolutely! Nobody has 'dibs' on any class, first of all, and I'd be happy to have a party with more than one character of the same class! I want quality characters above all else. If someone else has chosen the class you wanted to use, use it anyway. You won't be bumping them out of their spot in the party or making me choose between you. If you are having fun with the character class you wanted to use, then you are more likely to stay and continue to have fun here and less likely to get burned out.

Clerics and Paladins: Remember that gods and goddesses have specific times of the day when they expect their clerics to pray for their spells. I'll let you know when your deity expects you to pray depending on which deity you choose to follow. Some also include rituals and religious holidays that you are expected to know and participate in as a cleric, and I'll let you know about those as well, or if you have Faiths and Pantheons, you can read about them yourself.

Now, what do you need to know about the story to make characters? I don't want to give too much away, obviously, but I can tell you that your characters need to be proficient in battling the undead, both corporeal and incorporeal, but also in battling living opponents as well. Additionally, they will be hired by the City Watch (as sort of private contractors), so it would help if they have had positive interactions with someone on the City Watch so that their skills make them the ideal choices for the job the City Watch has for them. Additionally, your character can be from virtually anywhere in Faerun as long as they have a reason for being in Waterdeep and have been there before to establish a reputation there for themselves.

What's happened in the story so far? This game has played for several months (before its hiatus) and the adventures have taken the party from finding and dispatching with a storage room full of wights in the sewers of Waterdeep to doing battle with a vampiress on the rooftops of the city while a nearby inn burned, and finally it culminated in a brief "battle" between one party member and a sorceress of some sort who then escaped. Your character will meet up with them in a tavern after this battle and join their party. At the moment, there are a few remaining party members, which are balanced pretty well between magic and combat, so you can create any type of character you'd like.

If I've forgotten anything, please feel free to ask about it. So is anyone interested?

Wren cocked a hip and rested ahand onit, a roguish smile curling her lush lips as she gives everyone a little wave, "Hi there boys... and girls... Like the nice lady once said... what would you little perverts like to do first?

Don't worry, I'll protect you and make sure that the big, bad dead things don't hurt you... too much... then, she sighs contentedly and with a gleam in her dark blue eyes, "Now, where is that overgrown boy-scout that keeps trying to get into my pants... Sure, but we'll need to come up with a reason why Voloke went missing for a while.

Actually, that would be pretty easy. They got paid to check out the sewers, and they did, right? Maybe then he just got word of some orcs up around Neverwinter and felt the urge to go hunting?

Wasn't Val on the roof with the vampire? Everyone but 2 of us disappeared after the vampire fight, the whole bunch just stopped at one time... *shrugs* But, we're back, and atleast the swashbuckling rogue is here... so the rogue and swashing thing is covered. ;)

Would love to get in on this, but I don't have the time to commit to another game right now. Good luck with it though! :)

If you're still accepting people for this I would be interested. What kinds of characters are in the party right now? I have an idea for a ranger, a bard/or rogue, or a wizard. I tend to try to pick my characters to fill a role that's needed in the party.

Blinkin

As I'm not sure who all is returning, when things stopped, there was still a swashbuckler/rogue and a wizard. There may, or maynot be a mage or a paladin involved, I can only be certain of the swashbuckler/rogue.

I would really like to give group games another go, would it be possible for Sim to return? I apologize for bowing out, was dealing with a bit of mild depression and frustration.

What would be the reason for her absence since she was right there in the bath house when everything started.

Nicolae

@Countdown0: Sure, go ahead and level him up.

@Paladin101: Any of those would work, though we already have a rogue/swashbuckler, so your best bet would probably be either ranger or wizard.

@EroticFantasyAuthor: Sure, Sim can certainly return. We can say she was focused more on helping the Watch extinguish the building than chasing after the people who set it on fire.

This looks like an excellent game. I'm definitely throwing my hat in.

How do you feel about various subsystems? Psionics is mentioned as out, but what about Tome of Battle Martial Adepts, the various classes from the Tome of Magic (Binder/Shadowcaster/Truenamer), Incarnum? It's been a long time since I got to play a Binder, and they're a very versatile class to cover missing 'roles' in an existing band of heroes.
(WoTC article on adapting Binders to FR here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070718. Just a few modified vestiges and one new FR-specific one.)

I'd like to take the Magical Training feat as my Regional bonus, but I also want to be from Thay - despite how much sense they would make together, Magical Training doesn't have Humans (Thay) listed as an option. Can I grab it anyways?

other way round, I'm thinking. The basic idea is to have been a human peasant/freeman's child in Thay, who exhibited arcane potential and was conscripted for apprenticeship under a Red Wizard. He struggled to learn anything more complex than cantrips, though, a bad apprentice who earned lots of beatings and punishments. Somehow, he got his hands on an old Narfellan tome about binding - cleaning his master's basement or something, probably, started studying it, and eventually ran away with the help of his first and newly bound vestige. Since then, he's travelled Faerun hunting down arcane lore about vestiges and binding - in particular, chasing any hint of knowledge about the vestige Chupoclops.

If I get in and the game progresses long enough, I plan to prestige into Knight of the Sacred Seal at 11th level with Chupoclops as my patron; but I can't bind said vestige until level 11 anyways, so I might as well make it a character goal to discover such knowledge.

Nicolae

Alright, that works, and it's pretty interesting. It makes me wonder what he'd do for forbidden knowledge like that, and what pacts he'd have to make with devils for more knowledge.
O/O   Ideas

TheGlyphstone

More lost than forbidden, but yeah, he's definitely going to be Neutral. Preferably, his knowledge can come from written tomes - Narfellan, Old Imaskari, or anything else - but if a devil (or an angel, he's not picky) was offering a piece of binding lore or information on where to find it, he'd be willing to do a lot.

BrokenMirror

So are we supposed to post a character sheet and background to get it okayed?  I know I would like to play a female moon elf druid neutral good alignment named Saevain.

Zaer Darkwail

Yeah, charsheet, bit background and even IC sexual preferences if you so wish. Below is example of my char;

Name:Adrian Scarlet
Gender:Male (but looks slim female to most)
Race:Human (Thayan)
Class:Focused Conjurer 3/Master Specialist 6
Age:25
Birthday:1343 DR, Year of the Boot, Flamerule 21th
Height:5'5"
Weight:170 lbs
Skin:Pale
Hair:Black
Eyes:One eye blue and other crimson red
Style:Prefers wearing bright red gold lined loose scholar clothes and sandals with satin socks.
Background
Adrian Scarlet was born in Thay twenty years ago, more specifically at Bezantur, city of thousand temples. His half-elf mother is a priestess of Isis and thanks for that he was early on indoctrinated to Mulhorandi native religion and get curiosity to magic which his mother encouraged. His human father was simple sailor who owned a fishing boat and which daily his mother prayed for good weather and safe return. Because of his half-elf mother influence he took quite femine appearance early on and her naturally pale skin color but kept his dark hair but his eyes were curiosity and she took it as sign that he will be powerful mage someday. Also in general was belief women were better casters and so his femine appearance was a blessing from Isis.

Now, his life got changed forever when one day his father was ambushed by sahuaging in the ocean and mother from shore moved aid him...and follow him as he was pulled under the waves by sahuaging and with magic moved to help him. But neither returned. He was then send in tender age of eight to his uncle who was a red wizard, a man whom mother had much disliked but which young Adrian did not understand why.

His gift of magic was quickly discovered and he was put on traditional Thayan schooling for magic, which was brutal affair and highly competitive with fellow apprentices and he was bullied because his non-mulan appearances (despite he is actually mulan but mother's latent elven blood tainted traditional mulan features away). Then one day Adrian fled from Thay and moved all way to Sword Coast to become a adventurer for hire, hiding his tattoos from his head by growing hair and becoming a renown wizard. He does not use his real family name and uses merely Scarlet, after his favorite color and for his one scarlet eye. He has been in great aid in Baldur's Gate organization known as Flaming Fist by helping their patrols and helping clear goblin bandits off the trade roads with his summoned minions and battlefield control which fools goblins or even ogres and giants. He favors evil outsiders because according him it feels less bad hurt them when sending fight summoned minions fight goblins. Besides that he has worked as scribe and even spend time in Candlekeep itself and made friends there among archivers.

Then pair years ago he moved to Waterdeep along trade caravan and he had stayed since offering his services. He keeps polite distance to Blackstaff Tower, by his excuse that in general seven sisters and other chosen of Mystra do not like Thayan spellcasters but Adrian does make regular visits and donations to temple of Mystra in the city, to give respects to the goddess of magic.
Sexual Preferences
Besides my ons/offs here comes Adrian specific special kinks; aasimars/tieflings hold strongest appeal besides elves and half-elves as these women are exotic by Thayan standards and so are intriguing. His mother example was not native of thayan but had came to faith of Isis through being adopted to Mulhorandi parents. He is drawn to women of intellect or those who have something interesting flair or other exotic physical traits; like elf woman with unusual large bust, tattoos, piercings and so on. In general he has little interest on humans or other races in sexual interest. But if someone is human half-dragon he would immediately be attracted to person with such unique lineage.

Not that I'm aware of, 2 adrians, that is. Mr. Scarlett, the pretend red wizard with the attitude. Ah, okay. I was also talking about Adrian - after Calrond thought my character was going to be a Red Wizard, seeing an actual (?) Red Wizard (re)submitted amused me.

And have so much in common as we both studied to become red wizard, difference in that I actually graduated as actual wizard and know how cast arcane spells where as other thayan focuses on binding magic and knows only cantrips.

But yeah, Adrian has got lots of mistrust from others because his thayan origin and that he dresses in red and is a mage -_- . Plus his cat is tressym as note and the familiar is perhaps more badass than him. But I have got my other moments where I had been useful and I soloed long while vs necromancer until I made tactical error not keeping familiar stalking necromancer and staying in location where necromancer hided (and others were coming towards to).

A question; do we get 9th level gold added to our chars which were part of original team? I mean the difference of 8th and 9th level starting gold to spend?

Blinkin

Remember that there are several trying out for a limited number of slots... we have 4 or 5 of the originals coming back (Shocked the hell out of me)...

Good question about the gold though... Wren has plans for the 4,500 GP coming to her for finishing the job, but if we get more.. Goodie! Big shopping trip! lol

Ayup. No guarantees there will be two Thayans, but the coincidence was entertaining. I just need to murder the other applicants write the best character...

@Adrian: Good question, interesting answer - I didn't change the wealth by level for the new characters in the new advertisement thread. Apparently 36000gp is the Wealth By Level for 9th level characters, and I mistakenly put it up for you guys previously for 8th level characters that you all created. (Which may explain why you guys have been doing so well thus far...)

Calrond told me I should slap in a description and picture of my fellah in here, so here it is.

Character Sheet
Name: Anton Ramondu
Race: Human
Class: Bard 6/Master of Masks 3
Age: 26
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue

This picture is for his general looks. He doesn't use a spear, but the hat, and the rest of his attire is how I see this guy in his standard clothing, though he changes frequently to various clothes to fit his personas.

Background:
Anton was born the son of a storyteller and a musician, and his future seemed foretold. His father was a great bear of a man, with a thick, rumbling baritone voice that could fill a room and inspire an audience. His mother was a gifted player of the lute, and would weave subtle chords through her husband’s stories, lifting a triumphant moment higher, or playing to make angels cry when tragedy struck. Together they made a good living, and Anton grew up in good inns. By the time Anton was eight his father and mother had been invited to work at a new venture in Waterdeep, a playhouse called “The Halls of Discovery”. The next three years were a blur of pleasure for Anton, moving around backstage, meeting other performers, watching them practice and rehearse their bits. His favorites soon came to be the actors. His father found a troupe of them and started to work with them, converting his stories into plays, with his rich baritone narrating the tale as the actors strutted and postured on stage in their finery. By the time he was 14 he his first role in a play, tramping around the stage in the guise of a goblin. That tiny taste had him addicted. He continued to act and learn from his parents and the actors until he was 18, and a wanderlust came over him. He was tired of playing out other men’s tales. He wanted to make his own! But he didn’t want his to be imaginary and fiction, he wanted to LIVE the tales, he wanted to BE the hero, and then act and narrate roles in his own life story!

So he set out, armed with a lute and a rapier he stole from the prop room, and sought fame and fortune. He lucked into a band of adventurers on the road outside of Waterdeep, they called themselves the “Sapphire Blade”. Their leader, a paladin by the name of Sir Alric Tilmoth, bore their namesake, a blade of sapphire that glowed with holy power. The other members of the party were a tiefling cleric of Kossuth named Grenar Flamewright, an elven wizardess by the name of Turiela Moonshade, and a Halfling rogue with the talents of sorcery called Johnny Stumbleduck. The Blade was a righteous party, determined to do good as they pursued their goals. Stumbleduck dreamed of opening his own traveling business selling rare and valuable goods. Turiela wished to amass enough power to earn a place in a wizarding guild and advance her arts. Grenar wished to spread the glory of Kossuth, primarily by purifying evil with a handy bonfire. And Alric sought to found an order of knighthood. So the party traveled the Western Heartlands in search of evil, with Anton recording their adventures and aiding where he could. His attraction to Turiela was instant and obvious, and luckily for him she returned the affection. The pair soon became a thing, snuggling into a single sleeping bag a bit separated from the party, where their giggles and moans wouldn’t disturb their slumber. He soon discovered his skills as an artist made him a master infiltrator, making use of magic and his skills with makeup to pass himself as whatever they were investigating.

His moment of glory came when the party was watching a coven of the Cult of the Dragon. They had seen wagons coming in, bearing the bones of some great beast into the cavern, but none knew how many were inside, or what was happening. Anton volunteered to infiltrate, and did so with gusto, garbing himself as a member of the Cult, after days of observing them talking and moving about outside their cavern he had their walk down, their mannerisms, and many of the methods of their bows and some prayers. He walked into the cavern with the next load of bones, moving as though he belonged there, and none questioned it. He moved through the halls, noting the numbers of  their foes, finding exits, where the armory was, and even the chapel. In the chapel, the largest cavern of them all, he found them assembling the bones upon the altar, with a high priest of the Cult overseeing the act. In his hand was a large gemstone crusted chest, with what looked like a crystal window on the side. Within swirled a sparking mass of energy, and Anton knew instinctively it was the soul of a dragon awaiting the formation of a body he could take possession of. He slid out quickly, pausing only long enough to sabotage the door to the armory, hoping to deprive some of the cultists of their weapons. When he returned and told the party of what transpired inside the cavern, they wasted no time, and charged. The fight was fierce and bloody, but luckily only half the cultists were able to arm themselves from a second armory Anton had missed. They fought their way to the main chapel, and faced off with the high priest, and the freshly awakened dracolich. The battle wrote the bloody end to their career as they charged in with fury and righteousness in their eyes. Grenar and Alric faced off with the dragon, their holy powers giving them an edge with the freshly awakened dracolich. Turiela and Stumbleduck moving to attack the high priest, with Anton furiously playing his songs, weaving inspiring music around them, and letting out blasts of magic whenever he was able to get a clear shot at either foe. By the end of the battle, Grenar had given his life to become a living inferno, his God granting a death prayer and transforming his devout cleric into an elemental of fire, if just for a short time. Alric lost his left arm to the draco lich, but in echange was able to shear the head off, and kill the beast. Stumbleduck had a kneecap blown off by a blast from the priest, crippling him and forcing him to use a cane for the rest of his life. Only Turiela and Anton came out relatively intact, though both had their share of wounds as well. Luckily, the Cultists had brought the dragon’s horde with the shipments of bones, and the part agreed it was time to end it, to each go their separate ways once more and perhaps meet once a year in Waterdeep to relive old glories. Anton announced his intention to return to Waterdeep, to take up a role as an actor and playwright, and immortalize their adventures in song and tale.

And so he did. For the past two years he has strutted from stage to stage he has strutted, performing his art to the adulation of the crowds. Turiela and he had a tearful farewell, but Anton understood. It had been a moment in time, a temporary spurt of lust and love in the long life of an elf, and he didn’t hold it against her. Whenever she came back to town they would often hook up for another night of passion, but both knew it was not to last, that she would leave the next day, or the next week, to continue in her goal of attaining power in the Art. For Anton, the wanderlust has been rising once more, a desire for new material, for new challenges. So he has decided to see if some new band has need of a chronicler to travel with them, to immortalize their exploits to the end of time!

Sexual preferences:
Anton is an actor, and a handsome devil. He views himself as mildly famous, and supported himself for some years as an actor. As a result he has had dalliances with a number of women. He prefers human and elven women, blond or red hair attracting him like a magnet. His favorites are if he finds a half elf or full blooded elf with a more human like, large bosom. He also has a bit of a fetish, kink, for Halfling ladies. A fantasy of his that he has rarely been able to indulge in is having a Halfling woman sucking him off. Just the fact that they are the perfect height and such small mouths excites him. He also has a secret kink that he has never given in to, of desiring a woman to overpower and dominate him.

Healing:
Anton chants a small sing-song cadence beseeching the blessings of the lady of fortune, and a golden glow spreads from his hands over the wound, and the wounds begins to slowly pull back together.

Moral Shortcomings
Anton is not particularly devoted to a single woman, and as such it could be considered a shortcoming that he will flirt with any woman he finds attractive, and bed any of them who will let him. He is also a skilled liar, and has no compunction against using it to get what he wants or needs. His biggest issue is a bit of a gambling addiction, enjoying games of fate and trusting to Lady Luck to pull him through. In particular he loves dice games, the rattle of ivory dice in a cup a siren call that he finds hard to resist unless he had pressing business.

Hmmm... lets see...Sim missed the big fight on the rooftop with a vampire, and the chase through the sewers... not all that much.
Serge missed the chase through the sewers... not much
Val missed the sewers

So, none of the existing characters missed much. Once everyone disappeared, the game pretty much ground to a hault. Adrian had a bit more than everyone else because he decided to jump the gun and leave everyone else in the dust, but he may of learned his lesson. ;)

As for the new characters, It's up to our returned DM as to what to do about them, but things really do seem almost wrapped up on  this mission. At most, the party has to track down a vampire in her coffin and beat a necromancer, easy for our red wizard all by himself, much less the rest of us. And Cal may decide to call it done to get everyone in at the same place.

Well... there is that little issue with the fact that Adrian lost her and there may be a few more wraith guards to deal with to nail her in the coffin, she's in gas form, so I'm not sure nailing her in actualy works... if we could get some pitch, it may work... but then, we just burn her in the coffin instead of nailing her into it. ;)

#56
Dale, Human Cloistered Cleric / Crusader

Background
Orphan. There are many such in the realms, and they range from leading the most noble, to the most ignomious of lives. This tale ends at neither extreme of those spectrums--though that is later, far later than this introduction goes. For this table begins almost thirty years ago on a stormy eve when a babe was left, still swaddled in heavy cloths to keep the rain off of it, upon the steps of an austere monastery. The monastery had been built to no god, but to the paragons of virtue, the Inevitables who protected the multiverse from the depredations of those who would steal time or rend space asunder to allow dark beings in, ones such as the world had not known since before reality had been created and the walls of creation had been put in place.

The cries of the babe awoke the monks from their slumber, and they stumbled outside to bring in the shivering child. "Dale", they called him, as many orphans were called in the Dalelands, and guided him to grow as one of their own. Days of learning passed, for they were not a monastery for martial arts, as dotted the Realms, but of learning. While he was not the most adept of students, Dale did his best and learned of various things, things from the wide outside world. And yes, after his lessons, he was often given leave to join the children of the nearby village at play, the one place he excelled as he grew up to be bigger and stronger than most boys his age.

Years passed, and one day the tranquility of study day in and day out was broken by an attack. Strange things opened portals in the air and slithered through. Slime-ridden tentacles and amorphous shapes flooded the air, strange creatures that seemed to exist in more than the four dimensions most beings existed in. The few monks who were unable to escape to the monastery were cut down almost immediately, and the creatures circled it, attempting to get inside at some secret the monks held, but the wards held--though not for long. Time after time the creatures banged at the walls and doors, causing crackles of light and sound to appear which pushed them back, yet each time the light appeared to grow dimmer.

And then salvation appeared--another portal pierced the air, and out of it came a rider in shining armor atop a horse. Glaive shining, he slew one monster after another, and despite being wounded terribly in the process, he succeeded in driving them back before fainting atop his horse. The monks were quick to come to the aid of their rescuer, and set about cleansing the numerous wounds that adorned his body and dressing them with poultices made to all the body to heal more quickly. Dale was enamored with the stranger, with how he had fought so valiantly and sacrificed himself for Dale himself, as well as the monks.

When the stranger came to, Dale begged him to teach him of what it meant to be a knight. The monks, sensing that Dale's time with them was coming to an end, gave their blessing, and thus Dale began to learn the meaning of the sword, spear, chain, and mace. The man, Harllin his name, took the time to teach Dale of swordcraft and some of the sorcery which he used, though Dale had little talent for the latter. Still, the day came when they clasped hands, Dale said goodbye to the monks, and rode to find his destiny.

Divine Healing
When using his abilities to heal, it appears almost as though time was regressing on a wound, becoming whole not because the wound is healing, but as though it had never actually been afflicted.

Deities
While Dale doesn't worship any specific deity to the exclusion of others, he certainly offers them thanks and calls on them in times of trouble, depending on the situation. A number of Good and Lawful deities would be happy to welcome Dale into their fold... he just hasn't really chosen one yet.

Sexuality
Despite being far from unattractive, the only sorts of relationships Dale has had are of the one-night variety. He's heterosexual, and tends to prefer slimmer girl, which usually lends itself to elves.

Moral Shortcomings
While Dale is for the most part a stand-up individual, he does tend to see the world in black-and-white and extreme dichotomies which can lead him to being harsh or even cruel.

I cannot see your sheet Ghosthweel. Anyways as point of note in forgotten realms there is strong deity presence and overall most divine magic works through deities.

From healing description you may have interest perhaps on Amaunator? Using Heretic of the Faith to able enter Initiate of Amaunator.

@Ghostwheel: Zaer is right about divine spells needing the support of a god in the Forgotten Realms. One exception to that is the Church of the Triad.
QuoteThe Triad consists of the good-aligned deities Tyr, Ilmater, and Torm.
They are a particularly powerful alliance that was one of the major forces behind the founding of the Triadic church, and their splinter group, the Triadic Knights. Several crusades were launched over the course of history in their name.
This sound like the closest thing the Forgotten Realms has to what you're describing. In this case, your character's patron deity would be "The Triad", and he'd serve them as sort of a mini-pantheon rather than picking any one of them to serve above others (even though Tyr is the only Greater Deity among them, but mortals don't know much about the relative power levels among the deities).

@Glyphstone: The background you gave me works for me!

Zaer Darkwail

Yeah, Triad is also very fine choice for generic cleric who is lawful good and any lawful good deity warmly welcome him. Triad means you give respects to three deities or general ideology plus teachings of the Triad (while not singly devote any of the three although most members come from one three individual churches).

Also for Crusader martial adept it fits :).

Background

My name is Aldros Thal. I am a binder.
This is the seventh of my journals. If you possess one of the previous six, please hide it away somewhere safe for another to find; this journal contains all written in previous books, and that lesser knowledge might someday spur someone else on their search. If you possess a journal I have not yet written, please return this book to where you found it, and leave it for someone still trailing your footsteps.
Guard this tome well, while it remains in your keeping. My notes on each of the vestiges I have sealed pacts with are contained within, but the knowledge inside may be more dangerous than the rituals. There are many who would seek to kill me, or worse, for I traffic with and cleave to beings that sit beyond life and death. Many priests and clerics find such truths to be unpalatable blasphemy, for nothing can exist that is not within the purview of the gods. Many wizards and would-be rulers seek immortality, and might believe it reachable by means of pact magic. A very rare few, the greatest of fools, are convinced vestigehood itself is a goal worth pursuing. Heroes would bend the powers of the ones beyond to do good. Villains would twist them for evil. The vestiges do not care about these things; they are isolated, alone. They are beyond morality, for morality is a shackle of an existence they have lost. Be you aspiring champion of Light or merciless lord of Darkness, you may set yourself to mastering the arts found within. You may succeed, but never may you make the mistake of believing you are master of the entities who take up residence within your soul. The gods cannot command a vestige beyond what its pacts allow, think not so highly of yourself and judge that you can.

I was not always what I am. Long ago, I was a boy, in distant Thay. My parents were freemen - peasants, but free all the same, living a simple but comfortable existence beneath the notice of the Red Wizards. I was not so lucky - a seed of arcane potential lay within my body, and the minions of the zulkirs detected that seed in one of their periodic searches. Taken from my family, I was entrusted to the harsh care and tutelage of a full Wizard, the conjurer Ivros Odesseiron, and set to work learning how to harness the spark I carried. We both suffered as a result - him in frustration at the seemly inept pupil he had been assigned, and me in pain when he took that frustration out on me for my failures. I was no great intellect; literate, but only just, and even the most basic of arcane formulae flowed through my grasp like grains of sand. Often I retired to my tiny cell hungry, nursing small burns or shocks, and I knew it was only a matter of time before Ivros grew tired of me and threw me out - or worse, sold me as a slave to recoup the investment on my failed apprenticeship.

But one of my duties, when I was not stumbling over basic cantrips, was cleaning. Ivros lived in a tower, one he had taken from a rival Wizard in arcane combat, and the previous owner had been a hoarder. Rooms were packed with trinkets, antiquities, and books; frequently magical, more frequently worthless junk. With effort, I could see arcane auras, and so I spent long days sorting through the storerooms in search of enchanted items Ivros could use or sell, and tomes of arcane lore he would find interesting. It was in one of those rooms that I found it. An ancient libram, centuries old, and unlabeled save for a strange sigil on the cover. It drew me like nothing ever had, and for the first time in my life, I disobeyed my master by hiding the book instead of bringing it for his perusal. My scraps of free time were spent in that storeroom, laboriously translating it line by line from the lost tongue of Nar to Mulhorandi. Slowly, it revealed to me secrets of a lost art of conjuration - rituals capable of contacting otherworldly beings beyond the planes, calling them to me, and taking their power for my own. This was a magic outside even Ivros's understanding, and so I did not share it. I suffered by day, and studied by night, until at last I thought myself ready to conduct a binding. Amon came at my call, and for a share of my place in the world, gave me his gifts for a day. But his power was too much for my flesh, and his sign was unmistakable; upon rising, Ivros would know I had conducted magic without his permission, and it would likely be my life in payment. So I fled, armed only with my tome  and the vestige within me.

I feared pursuit, but none came - like Ivros was simply glad to be rid of my presence and irritating lack of proficiency, and he had never known of the libram that I stole. But I could not be certain this would be true forever, and all the same Thay was no longer safe for me and my new skills. I forged west, through Thesk, and took service on a ship plying the trade routes of the Sea of Fallen Stars - the captain was suspicious, but Naberius's silvered tongue convinced him otherwise, and I pulled my weight as a seaman enough that an occasional quirk of behavior was ignored.

I left the sea in Cormyr, and from there traveled far and wide. Often, the signs of my partners roused ignorant villagers or suspicious guards to violence. Very rarely, someone saw them for what they were, and my fragmented knowledge grew just a bit as two outcasts bonded to outcasts exchanged tidbits of lore before going our separate ways. Where possible, I passed myself off as a sorcerer, finding odd jobs and work to sustain myself in my journeys. Once, I saw notice of a band of explorers planning an expedition to Narfell itself, at the behest of a great druid trying to cleanse cursed ruins of their corruption. That journey taught me much, both in self-sufficiency and when to rely on others, including my introduction to the faith of the elven god Fenmarel Mestarine, patron of outcasts and pariahs, by way of his priestess Hacanthra. A wild elf, she lived up to the name of her race, but saw steel beneath my mask and a kindred spirit of loneliness in a hostile world. Most nights together were spent in pursuits more primal than religion, yet we talked as well, and I saw value in taking a patron dedicated to those no one else would welcome. Whether he welcomes my devotion I have never been sure, but nor have I ever seen a sign of outright rejection.

Our trip to Narfell and its demon-tainted catacombs ended ultimately in failure. Of five, three of us returned - my first love one of the two lost forever. I, though, left those dark lands with a prize, and a mission. From a tome bound in human flesh, I had found the sigils of Geryon, and from a tattered scroll, only a name - Chupoclops. A mighty vestige, predator of the gods themselves in ages lost to time. Its sigil was incomplete, but more complex than any I had ever beheld before, and I shall not rest until I find the portions missing and seal the Harbinger of Forever to my soul.

I write here in Waterdeep, comfortably alone amidst a crowd in a tavern. The City of Splendors is a new place to me, but surely within its walls there will be a clue leading towards a pact I have not acquired, perhaps even the Harbinger itself. Somewhere in the city, I have heard of a safe house for binders, guarded by the Knights of Agares. If anyone knows where pact lore can be found, it will be a Knight of the Sacred Seal - but finding them will be challenge indeed.

Deities

Aldros has, somewhat ironically, chosen the elven god of outcasts Fenmaril Mestarine as his patron. He rarely offers a prayer, or expects the notoriously sullen and grouchy deity to answer such from a human worshipper, but the Lone Wolf's worshippers are the closest he is likely to find to kindred spirits.

Sexual Preferences

Aldros is quite striking in a vaguely unnerving way, and extremely charming when he sets his mind (or Naberius's Silver Tongue) to the task, but for all his attractiveness his romantic liaisons are few and far between. Carrying a pair of utterly alien personalities in his head makes for distracted lovemaking at best, even when a solid pact prevents them from actively influencing his behavior. Free of any vestigial influence, he's most drawn to women whose bodies show they can take care of themselves - healthy and lithe or well-muscled, and preferably of similar size to himself.

Muse

Does anyone have a link to the old game handy?  I'm not sure where I put Serge...

And secret info dispatched to Calrond, so I think I'm all set. Not sure when recruitment will close, but I'll keep hanging around to chat and hope I've earned a slot.

So, when do we make our triumphant returns? At the HQ, or sometime afterwards?
My posting rate is SLOOOW at the moment... sorry about that :(

@Ghostwheel: Zaer is right about divine spells needing the support of a god in the Forgotten Realms. One exception to that is the Church of the Triad.

While I won't actually ever be casting spells, so I'm not sure how much divine backing I actually need, that works for me.

updated my entry on page two with a background, sexual preferences and healing appearance. Now waiting to see if the background is approved. :D

BTW, if anyone wants their character to have a tobacco habit, I found this list of pricing and varieties on Candlekeep:

@Muse: Yes, I kicked things into action again so that you guys can be ready to head to the HQ by the time the new characters are ready to enter the game.

@Paladin101: Everything you've posted so far sounds great to me!

Would new PCs have already been told by the guard about the undead problems? I might swap out Geryon for Tenebrous as far as start-of-game binds go if that is true.

Nicolae

Sure, they've been brought up to speed, at least as much as the guards presently know. The other characters can fill them in with the new information once they arrive at the HQ.

When did you plan on closing recruitment? There's currently 3 applicants for, if nothing has changed, 2-3 new character slots, and I'm trying not to get my hopes up too far.

And while I'm waiting, houserule question...as a Neutral character, can I choose to Rebuke Undead and/or damage them? Or does choosing to Rebuke with my turn attempts mean I heal undead with my turning by default?

Nicolae

Well, considering the fact that I've got 4 or 5 returning players and I usually try to run parties a little overpopulated to be preparedfor people vanishing (or worst case scenario, there are LOTS of opportunities for character interaction!), I'm pretty much going to give my four applicants (Glyphstone, Ghostwheel, Paladin101, and BrokenMirror) the thumbs up for entry into the game. Go ahead and get your hopes up as high as you want, you're going to be in the game as long as you want to be.

Oh, that's a good houserule question. I'm going to say that if you want to Rebuke Undead, but want to deal damage to them with the alternate rules, that works, but that is the decision you have to make at character creation that can't be altered.

TheGlyphstone

Technically, for me it is a decision I make the first time I bind Tenebrous (since he grants me Turning, and the ability specifically says your decision is fixed upon the first pact), but that is fundamentally the same thing since I will be starting game with an active pact with Tenebrous. Rebuking/Damaging it is.

All y'all need to stop slacking and get back to the surface so we new folks can say hi!

Nicolae

Alright, I want TheGlyphstone, Ghostwheel, and Paladin101 to post their character information in the Character Thread, here: https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=188672.0

You can see the format that the others used. Once we get that taken care of, we'll get to introducing you guys into the game.

And just so we're all clear, here is the thread to the game itself, where we're ready for new characters to introduce themselves! Enjoy!
