Stranger

Say hello to the dull gray tombstone
and wonder what they're gonna say.
Were you kind and forgiving?
Did you care and cry for the innocent?
Cheer and encourage the weak?

Pray you've no regrets
'cause there's no time now --
it's gone in a dazzling flash,
scattered by the harsh winds of fate.

No one gets their goodbyes.

Who's gonna cry and mourn for you?
Are there crystal tears for you?
Who's gonna weep for the
battered old man and
the forgotten child of fate?
Who's gonna cry for someone
they never knew?

Maybe someone knows you.

Smile for me now as you’re lowered
into the dark, damp earth,
returning to home with no sick remorse.
Sing for me one more time,
sing a lullaby of fairy tales and truths,
a tale of dreams and bittersweet lies.
Make me believe one more time
and crown me your princess of ill destiny.

Go, go on and embrace your ebon light
and dance in your jeweled shadows.
Take sour merriment in forgetting;
close your eyes to the deceptive webs left behind,
of the dried tears and burnt mouths.

No one's going to remember the stranger in you.

how to breathe

leave me with the
taste of your sin
they will lie about you, insult you, hurt you,
betray you, injure  you, set you aflame and
watch you burn. but they will not, shall not,
c a n n o t, destroy  you. because  you, like
R o m e, were built  on ashes, and you, like
a phoenix, know how to rise and resurrect.

Wow, that sure was different.

My mind's glimpse into how, if we share none of our wonderful aspects with others, the best of us will never be known or remembered or how the worst of us will be, as individuals and a society.  It's never really what we accomplish or "do" in our lives that's remembered (with notable historic exceptions, of course) -- it's how we make others feel, how we empathize or don't, and how we make our impressions upon the world.

Another beautiful piece, but an even more beautiful explanation.

"Weep," said Athos, "Weep, heart full of love, youth and life! Alas, I would I could weep like you!"

Thank you for your very kind and complimentary words. :)

Man. I am growing fond of your pieces. Keep up the fantastic writing ( I don't have a poetic bone in my body though >_< )
I was younger then, I wasn't afraid of anything, I didn't think about dying for a second. I thought I was invincible. Then I met her. Before me, my world shattered. I wanted to live, I started to think like that; for the first time I was afraid of death. I had never felt like that before.

That was an articulate, concise, and moving poem, Moirae.  And, even without your explanation, that meaning was exactly what I took it for in my own mind.  A poem that throws a bucket of ice water in your face and says, 'Stop worrying about what you have done and pay attention to who you have affected in your life!'

lives strive to invent it.”   ― Terry Masters

Another late reply...I've really got to check my notifications. >.>

Thank you both for the compliments and encouragement. Neither does better to act as balm for the sometimes battered ego.

Hannibal, I'd love it if more took that away from them just by looking at the world around them, who take a moment to examine their self motives with brutal honesty.  Maybe someday poetry will change the world again.  Though, that may take the destruction of the internet and most modern technology and I'm not sure I'm okay with that.   ::)
