Interest Check!

The year is 2137. Earth is no longer the home it once was. Destroyed by pollution and forever scarred by nuclear war. What is remembered as the Burn. The colonies on the moon and Mars have long been established with shipyards out at Jupiter floating in the orbit. Humanity was far from destroyed. A large initiative was put into searching the stars for another "Earth" to call home and start anew. Thus Project rebirth was begun. Massive resources were poured into the tech needed for this endeavor. Cryogen and propulsion technology skyrocketed to unseen levels and a ship was built. A suitable planet had been found already, so the mission got underway.

Now along one arm of the milky way The Exodious is on a mission. A mission that has never before been attempted. Out of system colonization. Powered by methane harvested from Uranus, hydrogen from Saturn, and outfitted with state of the art cryogenics, the ship was to travel for almost 20 years. 19 years have passed and the skeleton crew were beginning Operation Ice Man to thaw the colonists while in orbit around one of the destination planet's moon. Trouble has a way of striking at such critical times. While the crew was occupied, automated defenses awoke on the destination planet and struck the huge colony ship. This is where the story starts. Alarms blazing and lights flashing, all mixed in with the screams of the crew and the newly awakened. Be they injured or in shock, the difference isn't your first priority. You're naked and aboard a ship that wasn't made for combat. "Minimal ship functions remaini... ... ...Controlled crash initi... ... prepare for imp... iles may be... tive." Thats all the info you get as the speakers die into silence. Survival is first in your mind as it seems is also in the mind of a few others who have found clothing and suits. Life is going to be hell for a while, better get comfortable with the heat.

That's what I have in mind. I'm looking for at least a small group to begin, at least three or four. If any would like to join later, we can say you awoke from cryo stasis after the crash. The chaos to begin with will give everyone a sort of common event to discuss afterward. Some may break down, others may rise to establish order. All kinds of people were in cryo, so you can be anyone you want. Only thing barred is convict, currently military, and over the top types. The ship crew was more a maintenance team than trained killers so that won't work either.

Hopefully this takes off! Let me know what you guys and gals be thinkin!

Due to history inquiry. Here is a tidbit for everyone.
America, China, and USSR have emerged on the forefront of the world. All three powered by corporations that acted like covert mafias. Always pushing for power on the global market. Tensions were high as the world seemed it could grow no more. A murder of a Chinese diplomat on Mars, by a man of Soviet origin disguised as an American, was the spark. First some naval skirmishing, then some border conflicts, then all out war. It happened fast. China invaded America, but the Soviets, China's neighbor on the landmass, surged into China taking advantage of the chaos. China, in fear of being destroyed at home and afar, launched the first nuke without hesitation. Then the USSR fired. As both these countries had large stockpiles, neither would yield, but neither dared to launch another. Chinese spies within America used codes for nuclear facilities that the invasion had captured and launched nukes at all of the USSR's major cities. The USSR was devastated and retaliated in kind on both countries. Thus "The Burn" happened. The sheer amount of nukes that detonated caused America, the USSR, and China to crumble, and a good portion of the ozone layer dissapeared. Radiation from the sun and the nuclear winter that followed nearly sterilized the planet. A handful of Earth's population managed to evacuate on the ships that survived, but billions were left behind to survive or die. Mars was well established but ill equipped to rescue. The moon had ships in reserve, but would not use them. The shipyards on Jupiter were just now being finished. Earth was alone. Life endured, but not human. Mutations arose and killed off the humans for the most part. Those that survived the years bred back into stone age survival.

As the decades passed, the moon grew as an outpost to stage missions back to Earth. In the hopes of using the same PART (Partial Atmosphere Restoration via Tri-terra) tech on Earth that had begun to allow life on Mars. By 2080, Mars was the new jewel of humanity. Plant life could survive, but the atmosphere was too full of greenhouse gases used to warm the planet to allow unaided human breathing. Earth had begun to clear of nuclear radiation and warm again. Life was still on the planet, but in what state was unknown. The Jupiter shipyards were churning out ships and a space yard was begun in orbit around Saturn and unmanned methane harvesters were sent to Uranus to set up operations there. Engine technology leaped and bounded, allowing for further and faster travel.

In 2100, construction of the Exodious begins. Humanity has forsaken Earth as a home and found a new possible home. Life on Mars is almost possible, but unaided breathing is still in the far future. The moon is now a hub of activity as a staging point for missions to Earth to reclaim what was lost. Earth has evolved into a hostile place and the welcome home is not very inviting. Station Jupiter has thrived and Saturn has begun limited mining of the ring debris and fuel extraction from the planet is being tested small scale.

In 2118 the Exodious launches. It's broadcast on every display device known to Humanity. Other planets are evaluated for Domed colonies. Earth missions are halted due to a whole team going MIA. Jupiter station has a power failure scare 2 years prior and is now fully equipped with triple backups. Saturn Mining is now fully up and running.

Hmmm, not sure. I could keep it nice and pretty in the light forum, but then again, in the extreme forum, anything could go. When I say extreme though, I mean we could have some crazy alien devices slicing and dicing, or even some mentally unstable people arising to upset the perfect little survival. More preference of the RPers in this case.

Since the planet has automated defenses, does that mean it's currently inhabited by an Alien race, or that it had been inhabited at one point and is now deserted?

Color me interested.  Now I just have to figure out what I want to be.

Edit:

- I presume "Ice" refers to the cryo state of the colonists on the ship, and not the destination planet itself?

- My character's occupation (subject to approval) - Journalist
What a shame -- The money you spent on those tattoos could have gone toward a boob job.

And you have asked the golden question. Whether or not it's inhabited, is unknown. At least to the colonists. For our purposes, it's uninhabited, but relics abound. So who knows what you may find?

Great, the setting sounds really good so far.  I might join this later on, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this.

This sounds very interesting, I have a character concept I hope would work. :)

EDIT: I wanted to add a few things to make this more in line with the new character sheet added to the OP.

Name: Sarah Nakano
Age: 17
Gender: Female

Description:

A striking young woman of predominantly Japanese ancestry, Sarah is slender and has a timid manner. She has long, dark hair and pale skin. She is tall at 5’9, much of this due to her long legs. For the last two years she has often worn the standard jumpsuit issued to her when she began technical training aboard the colony ship. Otherwise, she wears relatively inexpensive clothing in line with the current fashions teenagers wear in the Mare Erythraeum region of Mars.

Personality:

Sarah is fairly easy to get along with, but holds people at a distance. She is shy, easily intimidated, and not very talkative unless the topic of conversation is of interest to her—she is most fascinated by engineering, science, and philosophy. She is very intellectually curious and hard working, although all her studying and problem-solving cannot erase her loneliness.

Occupation / Skills:

Robotics Technician, First Class. Her expertise is with designing and maintaining electronics hardware. While she works mostly with automated factory systems and resource gathering robotic drones, these skills are general enough to apply elsewhere. She also has some experience with debugging and modifying software.

Background:

Sarah Nakano is originally from Erythraeum City on Mars, though her family tree can be traced back to pre-Burn Japan. Growing up she was an extremely gifted student, though also a bit shy and lacking in confidence.

Her father Takashi was CEO of Nakano Electronics, a privately owned interplanetary conglomerate. Sarah was the most intelligent of his four children, and he decided to groom her to be his successor. But she had no interest in business, and spent much of her free time studying computers and robotics engineering.

Angered at what he considered to be his daughter’s obstinate behavior, Takashi began to monitor her closely and severely curtailed her activities. Though she was usually passive, Sarah was passionate enough about her interests to rebel, and at age fifteen she began writing scathing reviews of Nakano products on the planetary network.

Sarah’s entire family was outraged, and when she failed to apologize Takashi disowned her. He cut her off from his fortune and even granted her request to be legally emancipated. Shortly thereafter he came to regret the decision when he learned that she had been accepted into the technician’s program for The Exodious. He spent the next two years trying to dissuade her, but Sarah was excited by the historic opportunity and had little attachment to her family. By age seventeen she had qualified as a tech, specialized with the automated factories and resource gathering drones that would be deployed once the colony ship had arrived at its destination. She was then placed in cryogenic storage along with the other colonists.

So the amount of people in cryo would be something similar to the first scene in the movie Avatar, though with a large bit of chaos mixed into it?

I'm interested in playing.

This sounds really interesting. I'm also a sucker for Asians so the inclusion of the technician has piqued my interest.

However, I can only post two days of the week at present. Would this be a problem?

Off the top of my head I can think of:-

1. An ExoArchaeologist who would spend most of his time scavenging from any ruins.

2. A computer software expert with some knowledge of artificial intelligence and circumventing computer security

3. A biomedical scientist with a strong knowledge of genetics who can help make use of any of the flora and fauna and / or aid in helping the crew adapt to their new environment.

Let me know if any of these ideas float your boat and I'll submit a character.

Any of those sounds like a promising field, and you could work out your story as being away for long periods of time if you want. All up to you, just make sure not to leave anyone hanging when you plan on posting on one of your available days.

And also for everyone still looking in on things, please post up char sheets, so I can see who and what I'm working with.

Right. I've now managed to get some 'unrestricted' access from my laptop via mobile which means I can now post on weekday mornings (before 9:00am UK Time) - at least when I have enough credit anyway.

BTW: I don't know how much of 'old earth' culture is in this game so I can revise certain cultural references if required.

Name: Richard Hawthorne
Age: 26
Gender: Male

Physical Traits:

A tall, slim man with an athletic build, Richard has black curly hair and peircing dark eyes. His youngish features are offset by a fair degree of stubble and he has a wide, full mouth. He likes to wear black, but you won't find him wearing any dark satanic jewellery or any skull or demon head t-shirts. He does, however, wear a silver pentagram on a black leather chain around his neck.

Character:

Inwardly Richard is a little shy and socially awkward. He knows this and compensates by trying to be as open and friendly as he can. This means he can sometimes be quite chatty, but at other times be stuck for something to say. He is at his best when in his own comfort zone. Though not an incredibly brave person, Richard can be loyal and will act despite of any fears to protect those that he considers friends. He has a fairly keen intellect and is good at problem solving. He practices Aikido.

Richard has always been attracted to what could be considered as Gothic Metal. By this he means bands that have strong guitar leads with soft, female vocals. He doesn't particularly like bands that "growl" rather than sing. His favourite colour used to be Red, but recently he revised this and now it's purple.

Richard likes spicy food. By spicy that doesn't always mean hot. He is quite partial to the odd Jalfreizi but also really likes Korma and Masala. He likes to wash this down with a good "real" Ale. Socially he has a passion for Glenmorangie.

Richard doesn't read much lately, but does occasionally pick up the odd horror novel. He's a H.P. Lovecraft fan at heart. He likes cats.

Profession: Expert in the fields of both Artificial Intelligence and Nanotechnolgy

Some Background:

Born on Mars, Richard showed a natural aptitude for technology and reverse-engineering from a very young age. He was encouraged to develop these skills through his school years and when he was old enough studied Artificial Intelligence and Nanotechnology at University, from which he
graduated with first class honors.

After graduating, Richard was recruited by Mars security services, writing surveillance software. His skill in this field drew the attention of the Earth intelligence division who hired him to combat cyber terrorism. Whilst there he was trained in counter-espionage. After spending a year in this roll he was enlisted for the mission as one of the many computer specialists, and also for his skill at reverse engineering new technologies, combined with his talent for hacking unusual systems.

Might as well join the fun no? I'll give it some more time to see if anyone else pops up and to give our current interested a chance to post up. I'll start a thread a bit later. Most likely under the Light category. I'll also be perusing the story a bit to add more to the background or touch it up. If anyone has any requests or inquiry into the history please ask, I can weave some intricate tales of fancy if needed.

Name:Daric Storms
Age: 27(40 if you add time in cryo)
Gender: Male
Physical Traits: 5'7", 180lbs, Stocky, but in a muscled way, has a tattoo around his neck which say "I can ice your fires, trust me."

Character: Carefree, joking, often overlooks the obvious in favor of finding something more.
Profession: Cryogenic Systems Specialist
Some Background: Taught how to be "useful" to the dome community of Luna 4 on the Moon, Daric was born to be a fixer. As a child he played in the tight crawlspaces and maintenance corridors. Sometimes, something would break and block his path, so he fixed it. This was just something he did so he could keep exploring. His parents were killed in a dome breach incident, as the atmosphere was still too hostile for human life. He was distraught and dissapeared into his haven of tunnels. When the engineers finally caught up to him, as a boy of 13, Daric astounded them with his knowledge of simple yet effective repairs for even the most advanced systems. The leading cryogenic company of the time, Cryogenie Corp., caught wind of him and adopted him as a company venture, they taught him the ins and out of cryogen technologies and systems. By 18, Daric could build his own freezing chamber to flash freeze anything. At 21 he was drafted into a colonization project when he submitted his name in a survey. He would spend the next 10 years in a cryo system, be awake for 6 years performing various duties with the cryo systems, then sleep another 4. This is how he came aboard the Exodious. This is how he awoke into the chaos.

I had a thought about starting the game. Maybe while we wait to see if more people submit characters, we could have a scene set at a celebration shortly before the colonists are frozen. It wouldn't really affect anything, but it would give us a chance to chat in-character for fun and get sort of a base-line of how they are before they're thrown into a crisis.

Oh, and I just thought I'd add that I'm fine with whatever category the game ends up in--I can play nice if I have too. ;P

#18
Name: Ellen Mendoza
Age: 23 (Y 2118) / Born Y 2095
Gender: Female
Physical Traits: Slim and petite, Ellen stands at a height of 5' 2" and weighs in at about 105 lbs. She's the typical short Hispanic girl, sporting brown hair, brown eyes, though with a pale skin color than her Hispanic tanned-skin brethren. Many people do not notice that she has an implant in her left eye, giving her what would be a telescopic advancement for her eyes, an upgrade she was given after suffering from blindness at the age of 20. Ellen has bullet scars on her right arm and left thigh, wounds she suffered a year prior to being put in cryo on the Exodious. She grew up living in the near-hostile environment of Mars. So it wouldn't be unusual if someone found Ellen wearing a black pressure suit everywhere she went.
Character: Ellen is calm and collect and usually does not panic in times of chaos. To panic was to use more air when your suit leaks oxygen, so she trained herself to calm herself down in risky situations. This characteristic gives her the ability to fire a pistol without a nervous wobble.

She is content whether in a crowd or alone by herself. Her father dying from a hereditary illness when she was young made her to be independent at a young age. The eldest out of three children (two little brothers), she would often help out her mother by taking care of her brothers and chores around their home.

Ellen is very observant, and notices things just by staying in one place and taking note of differences, whether subtle or not, in the environment around her. This characteristic made her to be a fine criminologist.
Profession: Former Criminologist, Currently a Forensic Scientist for the Exodious
Background: Ellen was born on Mars to Hispanic parents living in a major settlement on the planet. She was a good kid, always wanting to hear about her family and how they were originally from the Earth and migrated to Mars for a better life. She loved the story of her great-grandparents, and though they were brother and sister, agreed to leave the Burned Earth to start a family and a better life. Though her great-grandfather was completely blind at the age of 30, the time when her grandfather was born, he did not give up on life. He couldn't see, but that didn't stop him from using his other senses to navigate his world. This inspired Ellen to look, not only with her eyes, but her other senses. As time went by, even after the death of her father, she navigated through life like her great-grandfather.

Her skill at observation and at solving problems made her independent at a young age, and often helped out her mother when she had too much to do. Her two little brothers would often fight and Ellen would be there to break it up.

Her observant view of things led her on a path to entering into an internship at the age of 16. On Earth, crime was evident in society. On Mars, it wasn't very different. Living in a settlement where crime was unpredictable, Ellen was courageous enough to began her education immediately in the field of criminology and forensic sciences. At the end of internship, she suffered from blindness in her left eye, a characteristic her father, her grandfather, and her great-grandfather had when he was in the same age. After being recruited into a CSI lab, her job gave her the opportunity to regain her sight. She was given an telescopic implant in her left eye, which gave her an advantage over other criminologists working with her.

Her career and journey through life did not have an absence of risks. After her second year on the job, she was caught in a firefight along with her fellow investigators, returning fire on insurgents fleeing a crime scene. Stray bullet caught her by surprise, wounding her right arm and left thigh. Ellen laid in bed for eight months, contemplating if this was a good position for her to be in - in a bed, suffering from wounds, worrying her family. The lead CSI offered her a chance to be one of thousands on board the Exodious. She would be going in his place, for he was to be a forensic scientist helping out in the expedition. After thinking it over, she accepted the invite and after regaining her strength on her 23rd birthday, she was placed in cryo on board the massive ship.

I'm wanting to do the profile for my character, a journalist.  I want to give my character an interesting history, but in this case I don't really understand the history of humanity.  Is Earth completely used up and uninhabitable, or are there some people still living there?  Was "the Burn" within his lifetime, or something that happened a hundred years prior?  Are all people now living in bio domes on the moon and Mars, or did Mars turn out to have an atmosphere that could support human life?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I just want to know what sort of things are going on in the solar system that he could have covered as a journalist ... wanting him to be where the action was... meaning wars, etc.  I don't want him covering some bush war in Africa when everyone in Africa died 100 years before he was born.

Anyway, sorry if I'm on the wrong track here, just trying to figure out my character's history.  Thanks.

Great questions, That's why I offered. "The Burn" was more a series of events in 2034.
