I'm currently running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my laptop. As you can see by my ability to post using my laptop, I have an Internet connection that works fine.

When attempting to install the 26 software updates listed, the Update Manager throws an error:

Failed to download package files.
Check your Internet connection.

I think I understand what the errors are saying/what the problem is, but I don't know how to solve this. Does anybody have a suggestion or a fix to this issue?

>.> Have you tried updating the Update Manager?

I would take a guess that it's pointing to the wrong repository for the files it's trying to find.

I'm going to try sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to see if this resolves the problem. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm really not used to upgrading with Linux, and had forgotten about apt-get until you mentioned updating the package management software.

I looked at a couple of those packages on my machine's 12.04 installation, and it already has newer versions of the ones to which yours is trying to update ... and mine isn't fully up to date either - so I'm guessing it's likely it is just a very stale package database you've got and the "apt-get update" refresh will sort it all out.

Fingers crossed for you.

404 errors over http means the same thing - the file isn't there. It's a problem with the server - the files in question might not be in place yet, or have gone missing for any number of potential reasons. I've never seen it take longer than a day to resolve.

This doesn't happen very often, but if it does and you're impatient, you can edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change to a different archive.

apt-get dist-upgrade will bring you to 12.10, which I consider to be a nice update, but it won't be a Long-Term Support version like Precise (12.04) is.

EDIT: Only if you've edited /etc/apt/sources.list, that is
