Sex on camera is such a popular theme for so-called "Reality Shows." From Real World to Big Brother, from Temptation Island to The Bachelor and so many more, it's become a mainstream pastime to the studios.

Now a new one is being offered. Instead of taking the predictable stereotypical people - the Troublemaker, the Angel, the Brat, the Slut - the studio is trying something different. Instead of having perfectly great-figure late-teens and early twenty-somethings who were all too eager to get wild with the other participants, this time they decided to make it different. Darker, for sure, and possibly more sensual.

Promises In The Dark is that show. Applicants have to be mid-twenties through mid-thirties, and only people who have had bitter, traumatic separations or divorces are accepted. People who have been abused, had their "Significant Other" cheat on them, or worse. The directors don't want the abusers, the cheaters, the thieves, and the amoral punks - those people don't deserve the same sort of second chance, as far as the directors are concerned.

However, just because the accepted applicants are all the "good guys and girls" of their old relationships, that doesn't mean that they will be here. The studio is going to play tricks and traps, games and goals, and try to get them to betray each other in one way or another.

Who can win? Will there be any winners at all, with love conquering all? Or will it be a frozen wasteland, with everyone even more callous and distrustful than they started?

This will be a free-form RPG with 8 to 12 players/characters, evenly divided between Male and Female. Although the emotional knifes of the characters are designed to keep it from being a wham-bam-every-which-way sex-fest right from the start, it may end up being quite kinky over time; it will be created in the Bondage Small Groups forum, and hopefully we can work our way into the Big Groups area.

Scheduling/Speed: Since this is a game where all of the characters are essentially involved with each other to a certain degree, we need to make sure that relative time is consistent. That means that you don't do a three-hour travel-and-exposition* in the same time when a couple of other players are getting frisky. This game will be expecting a general posting speed of two to three posts per week. There are two exceptions to this: If you're having a conversation with another character (or having some wild sex), post as many posts as it requires; and the first week, which is going to likely have a LOT of character interaction, the expectation is suspended. Also note that this is a guideline. Try to keep the other posters in mind, but if you need a fourth and fifth post in a reasonable in-game time frame, do it. Don't stress about having already posted your three for a week.

In Character/Out of Character knowledge: Please try to keep a reasonable awareness of what your character knows, separate from what you as a player know. If two characters sneak off into the jacuzzi to explore each other's bodies while everyone else is having dinner, there's no reasonable expectation that your character knows what they're doing. Keep in mind what your character knows, and don't react to the events that they don't know.*

Yeah, that's exactly the basic platform for a character we're looking for. An excellent start!

Something else to think about: how your character behaved AFTER the betrayal and break-up is just as important as the betrayal itself. Did your character withdraw from others, becoming a wallflower, a recluse, or even a hermit? Did they carry on life as normal, without sex? Or perhaps they became one-night wonders, who found people of the opposite sex to play with, but never called for a second date?

There are many possibilities here.

@ wisdomcube and AndyZ: I have no problems with you guys playing female characters here, provided there isn't a conflict with other female players wanting to play female characters. Of courst, it's entirely possible that we could get some ladies who wanted to play the guys, here.  >:)

As for "how dark" - if you're talking about your back-story, you can make it as dark as you like, provided that it doesn't make your character completely devoid of any interest in the opposite gender. The crews are going to be screening and blocking emotional psychopaths. ;)

Similarly, severe events during the "show" are going to be monitored closely, so there's not going to be any cutting off another character's penis, here... Bobbitt-ladies are not going to get very far. ;)

I'm interested. Thinking of a character vaguely Infinite Jest-esque. A previously small-time successful lawyer has been hit with an odd revenge by a drug-user criminal, which will not be described unless needed. Needless to say, however, this revenge was rather...unique, and has triggered a crippling phobia in his wife, which lead to their marriage degrading. The wife turned to drugs, turned to mystics, a variety of things that could have rendered her legally insane, to cope with her phobia. She singlehandedly ruined their marriage, their finances, everything... He divorced her too late and split the little that was left with her, her lawyers sharking most of it away.

Yes, Lacking, you playing a male character is just fine. The game is going to be "hollywood dark" - there's going to be some deliberate backstabbing "traps" - or the opportunity for the characters to lose points by refusing to backstab, that sort of thing. Not really dire, but certainly manipulative.

Not really, no. I want a minimum of 4 per side, to keep it from being too unstable or limited. With 3 and 3, some of the planned scenarios become very restricted.

I have somewhat of a char concept I can reuse as female.  In the home stretch of another novel, though, so not 100% I can do something great if I have to come up with something original.  The original concept I was thinking would be pretty dark, though (attempted suicide and such) so might not work overly well in the game.  I'll have to think.

Character name: Anna Foster

Age: 27

Gender and Sex: Female.

Basic personality: Anna tries to not let her past circumstances change what kind of person she's always been, though sometimes it can be hard.  She tries to be friendly to people she meets, though it's harder to do with men, and she's lately taken to being more observant when she first interacts with people, and it takes her some time to open up to strangers.  She's still someone who considers herself a nice person, one who doesn't manipulate others, and tries to find the bright side in life, optimistic rather than looking to find something negative to be depressed about all the time.

What happened to turn you off relationships? Anna was married to her husband Mark for three years, from the time she graduated college until a couple of years ago, when it was discovered that Mark, who taught college-level history, was having an affair with one of his students.  Needless to say, they divorced not long after the news came out, Mark having since married his student, and the two moving to a different town, though not far away.  Anna's just grateful she doesn't have to risk running into one or both of them every day, and still wonders how she could have misjudged someone so completely.  She wouldn't have thought Mark would be capable of such a thing, and is just glad the student was over 18, and a legal adult, and that Mark hadn't chosen to go into high school teaching.  Anna is hesitant to try a new relationship, afraid she'll make another mistake and be hurt again, and hasn't been with anyone since Mark.  Relationships and intimacy are something she still takes seriously, and she can't just sleep with anyone casually, using others just because other people do the same thing.

What are your strong points (pick three)? A good listener, loves to read most anything, as far as fiction, and likes to bake, especially lately.  It's
easier than cooking a whole meal, and she's taken to taking extra things to the neighbors, since she can't eat all of everything she makes.

What are your weak points (pick two)? Know-it-all or obnoxious and rude people, and her own fear of trusting new people.  She used to be more open and ready to be trusting until someone gave her a reason not to trust them, but now someone would actually have to work to earn it.

A picture or detailed description of my appearance Anna is around 5'6, with dark hair that falls to the middle of her back, and bright blue eyes.  Her hair is straight, rather than curly, and she weighs around 125 pounds.  She's not full-figured, but not completely flat-chested either, though she's on the smaller side, yet she thinks it fits with her height and weight fairly well.

So... presently if all of the players get their characters in as specified and preferred, we'll have 6 ladies and 3 men. So we need two or three more male players. =O_o=

And yet... we could run with this. I hadn't planned on having F/F play being a dominant factor, but if other ladies are willing to let it be, so am I. The only possible problem here is that audiences and directors like to have it seem like an evenly-balanced show... but we can just as easily say, "screw them," and go with what we've got. It'll mean that I need to adjust some of the plot elements, but there will be more tension, since it'll be impossible for everyone to "win." ;)

Since we haven't started yet, we can still bat ideas around a bit, and make changes and adjustments. I'd be happier with a group that's involved and helping create some of the subplots - that means that you'll be more motivated and interested, and far less likely to drop out after a week. ;)

Non-player-characters for games like this are usually not a good idea, because there's a different dynamic. May I ask how it limits things? I would think that it would make for more drama. A bi-curious character would perhaps play the field on both sides, needing to make a decision that could/would cause drama.

On the contrary. That's exactly the sort of thing this game needs - characters that are unsure of themselves in some ways.

We'll call it an 80% "yes" at the moment. As Greytrail said, we're all creative people, and we can make this work. =^_^=

Rereading over some of the posts, I think I do need to make one thing clear - just like most of the other games, this is going to be about sex between the characters. The original premise is just somewhat of a brake to keep people from diving right into the heavy scenes on the first day. ;)

Character development, interaction, learning about the others and making friendships (and possibly enemies!) - these are what raises it from just a couple of people having sex. And while kinky, erotic sex is very much a part of E, it's also not the only thing that brings us here. If all you wanted was the sex scenes, you wouldn't have signed up for Elliquiy in the first place, I think. =^_^=

WHY the characters start knocking boots is an important element. ;)

I'm starting up another group game, Not Your Normal Harem Show. This is unrelated to any decision for this game - whether this game moves forward or gets shelved depends on the character sheets we've received by Wednesday Night or Thursday Morning. The reason I'm doing this is that Harem isn't going to be as GM-heavy as Promises and Scholarship. I don't think I'd be able to run both of those concurrently; Harem, on the other hand, shouldn't interfere. ;)

Basic personality: Nina is a sweet, fun loving woman. She likes being around people and having a good time. Nina can be an absolute flirt which was part of what lead to her downfall with relationships, or at least how she has brought herself to believe. Even with her sweet and generally kind personality she is the type to fight for what she believes in and can turn into the total opposite of what others expect her to be like. Since her break up she has tried the dating scene, but whenever things get too serious she tends to close herself off and push the person away out of fear of being hurt again.

What happened to turn you off relationships? It was the perfect romance. She had been set to marry him in just a month after being together since high school. They had both finished getting their degrees and were living in an apartment together. Out of the blue there were changes in him. They would fight constantly, he'd accuse her of cheating, even became rough with her during sex as a reminder of who she was with. At some point it was no longer venomous words that were thrown at her, but physical blows to her body. Still she stayed by his side and tried to prove that she wasn't cheating, that she wanted no one but him. In her mind if she changed what was upsetting him everything would stop. Then of course she saw the messages. The man had been cheating on her for months and from the looks of it- planned on seeing the chick during their honeymoon. That was the last straw and Nina moved out that very night while her ex slept never to look back.

Basic personality: Mike is a jaded individual, after serving in the military, going to war, and losing his leg in a bombing while on foreign soil, he is a very cautious when getting close with people. His recovery went well, mainly because he was determined to do whatever needed to get back on his own two feet, even if one was a prosthetic. He is a man that many look up to, although he rarely sees that, and doesn’t understand why, after all, he feels he’s just living the way anyone would.

What happened to turn you off relationships? Mike was happily married, or so he thought, to Monica. They married 2 years before he was sent overseas. He missed her while gone, but did everything in his power to make it easier on her, skype calls as often as he could, and always trying to be understanding. He missed her incredibly, but he always put up a strong front when talking to her. He wanted to be her rock. He returned home from the Medical Center, only to be greeted by a very pregnant wife at the airport. The shock and discovery completely shattered him, but everything suddenly made sense, no wonder she hadn’t been willing to come visit him after his first couple of months in the hospital. She obviously must have been getting larger and larger, and she wouldn’t have had the benefit of the drugs he had been on to keep him unaware of her condition. She told him then that things were over, that his things were packed and at his mother’s house, and that the home he shared with her was occupied by her and someone else.

Gender and Sex: Male and straight, but he's had some past morning afters that have left him haunted.

Basic personality: Wounded nice guy. Recovering addict.

What happened to turn you off relationships: Dan grew up a nice guy in the burbs with decent grades and playing sports and just being a normal kid. Then he met Stacy. An high school love affair with the new bad girl in town spiraled into drugs and debauchery of a sort that he can't speak of outside of therapy. Honestly, he has no idea how he won the karmic lottery and doesn't have some horrible social disease or a headstone. A nice cop in Vegas-- he still has no damn idea how he even got to Vegas-- scraped him off the street and got him into rehab before it was jail or dead.

What are your strong points (pick three)? 1) Hitting worse than rock bottom and then climbing back up in rehab and subsequent recovery made Dan realize that he's stronger than he thinks he is. 2) Likes to be busy, to keep moving and get shit done. That goes with… 3) Creative as hell. Sketches, paints, dabbles in writing, plays the guitar, has a passable singing voice.

What are your weak points (pick two): 1) His high school moniker of 'Macon-Bacon'. Taunting is for punks. 2) Being over-manipulated. Dan understand that there's a certain amount of manipulation that goes on in any relationship, be it a lover or the gal at the drive-thru. It's when someone revels in it that his ire gets up. Been there, done that. 3) Hates laziness/weakness of character due to his former life.

A picture or detailed description of my appearance: pale brown hair, a tad scruffy with strikingly bright blue eyes.
He's a buff guy because exercise helps keep the demons at bay and strengthens a formerly abused body. He never wants to be that wasted junkie again.
Has some scars that make him look like a war survivor, as well as some deliberate ones to remove some ink that needed to go.
Sometimes gets the shakes and will withdraw from people and activity to calm down. Not a good idea to press him when he gets that feral look in his eye.
Looks older than his 24-- acts it too-- due to his experiences. Few would suspect him to be younger than 30 or so.

I'll probably just wait for the official code, but I'll ask if what I was thinking would work.  Basically what I did was go to the post where the picture was, hit the "Quote" option so that any coding would show up, copied the line that started with the img tag, and was going to paste it somewhere on my character sheet, probably around the description field.  I'm thinking that even if I do put the picture in, I might leave the description I came up with in too, just for reference for my own self, so I don't get mixed up and say she has green eyes instead of blue, or something similar.

Basic personality: About as easygoing and laughable as you can get.  Kevin is a real charismatic and lovable guy.  He has many friends and loved ones around at all times.  Since he is a teacher and a coach, he also has former players and students around.  But, Kevin does have a dark side as well.  When he gets pissed, he gets pissed.  He can be very explosive and violent.  Not often, but it can happen at times.  Has been known to be on the freaky side as well...

What happened to turn you off relationships? Chole and Matt were college sweethearts.  Matt is from Canada, and made his way to Pittsburgh for school.  He met Chole and they were madly in love.  She was an asipring lawyer, and Matt was a teacher/coach/wrestler.  As they grew into adulthood, Chole's career took off.  She became big time and wanted to move to Boston.  Matt was a new teacher and coach at an area high school, and he was set as an assistant football coach, wrestling coach and could pursue pro wrestling on the weekends.  They tried to make it work, but Chole outgrew Matt.  She worried more about the money and power, and Matt fell by the wayside.  She did move to Boston... without Matt.  He was left back in Central Pennsylvaina by himself.  He is a coach at Steen High School.  He fell into a depression, and worked out of it by wrestling more and more.  His character changed, and it felt good.  He also began exploring more deviant things...
