The Great Triangle

I'm interested in running a game about rock bands affiliated with the forces of heaven and hell, traveling across the country at the behest of archangels and demon lords, serving their strange desires and ideals.  I'm interested in using the In Nomine setting, and to some degree the system, but mostly only to define what powers various characters have.  I'm going to be handling the game system side of character creation for all players, except those that specifically want to create a character.

I'm looking to create a fairly laid back game with a posting rate of about once per day in the main thread(s), with side threads that can move faster.  (such as for full scale combat or sex scenes.)   Consistent timeline isn't a priority with me though, and my aim is to keep the game moving along.

When creating your character, simply indicate your character concept, how many forces your character has, (explained below), what Archangel or Demon Lord your character serves (if applicable, which it is for most characters except renegade angels, remnants, some etherial gods, and mundane humans), and rank the following items between 0 and 10 in how important they are to your character.  Also indicate if your character has any serious flaws.  (such as being insane, deaf, blind in one eye, or extremely stinky)

Vessel:  Your character's status and attractiveness, as well as physical toughness.
Skills: Things your character knows.  Tend to be most important for humans.
Artifacts: Items imbued with power; often granted by heaven or hell to be used with great responsibility.
Servants: People who serve your character.  No individual can have servants more powerful than him or herself.
Songs: Supernatural powers; not applicable for normal humans.
Attunements: Permanent supernatural abilities imbued by an Archangel or Demon Lord.

In the In Nomine setting, Heaven and Hell exist, God is almost certainly up there, but he's rather mysterious and quiet, and the universe is divided into three realms.  The celestial realm of heaven and hell, the ethereal realm of dreams and the inner mind, and the corporeal realm of earth.  Most of the game, of course, occurs in the corporeal realm, and most characters will be limited almost exclusively to activities in that realm.  Only true angels or demons can operate freely in all three realms, giving them an advantage balanced by the difficulty of having to split one's attention between three realms of existence.

A creature in the In Nomine universe is composed of metaphysical entities called forces, components of a soul that give a character his or her nature.  The number of forces composing a being determine how powerful that being is.  Corporeal bodies can be composed of between 1 and 8 forces, while ethereal bodies can be composed of between 2 and 13 forces.  Celestial bodies, the most powerful beings of all, can be composed of between 3 and 18 forces, although the Archangels and Demon Princes, as well as God and Lucifer, are rumored to have more.

1 force: A living creature, as opposed to an object, always has at least 1 force.  Beings from the humble ant to the rat are composed of 1 force.  Individual populations of bacteria also occasionally have a force between them, although this is rarer.

2 forces: The weakest dream fragments are composed of two forces, as are the collective spirits of populations of force 1 creatures.  Most farm animals smaller than cows have 2 forces, as do many larger species of fish.

3 forces: Three forces is the absolute minimum level that sapience and self awareness are possible at.  Most of the higher animals that humans identify with are at this level, as well as newborn humans.  Vegetative or brain damaged humans often have three forces if their souls have not already transmigrated to the celestial realms.  Three forces is also the level at which Celestial beings can exist.  3 force celestial beings are called Retainers, if they serve heaven, or Imps, if they serve hell.  Such beings have minimal ability to affect the world, except as couriers and spies, and make poor PCs.  (though they are playable)

4 forces: Four forces is the level of more intelligent household pets, as well as superior animals like dolphins and chimpanzees.  Roughly one in 50 humans are also composed of four forces.  Such humans are notably deficient in some area, but not always helpless.  Four force humans quite often live normal lives, though they make excellent vessels for possession by angelic or infernal beings.  Senior Imps and Retainers also have four forces, though celestial beings are recalled from all interaction with other planes of existence after attaining five forces, so that they can feed on the energies of heaven or hell and evolve into true angels and demons.

5 forces: Five forces is the human average, as well as the level of some truly amazing animals.  96% of humans have five forces, often manifesting them fully by age six.  Younger humans, however, have much less static forces than other beings, gaining the strength of their forces as a constant flow of essence rather than as permanent abilities.  Such makes them frequent targets of hell, and important resources for heaven to guard.  Etherial beings, shaped by human imagination and belief, who make their presence known in the corporeal world typically have 5 or more forces, though they very rarely have more than seven unless they are worshipped as a god.   5 Forces in an appropriate level of power for a "mundane" human PC.

6 forces: At six forces, a being becomes notably stronger and more aware of the universe, progressing to a type of super self awareness.  One in 10,000 humans is born with the ability to automatically progress to six forces.  Such beings become scientific geniuses, presidents, and sports heroes.  However, one in 50 humans have the potential to gain six forces, through the intervention of an angel or demon.   Those granted the sixth force by heaven are called the Gifted, and serve the will of an archangel with their superior might.  Many gifted are even granted supernatural powers, and artifacts from heaven, to enhance their power.  People augmented by hell are called the damned, and sell their souls in exchange for power.  The damned must satisfy every whim of their demonic master, often a servitor demon to a Demon Prince or Princess.  In exchange for good service,  (if they're extremely lucky) the damned can sometimes be granted occult powers by their master.   The gifted and the damned make extremely excellent PCs, and are highly recommended.

7 forces: Seven force beings are truly exceptional.  One in 10 billion humans reaches this level of power naturally, though it can be achieved through other means.  The types of beings most notable for having seven forces are undead, remnants, and saints.  The undead are the creations of the Demon Prince Saminga, and are frighteningly powerful for reanimated corpses.  Undead always suffer from some crippling weakness, be it need for blood and fear of sunlight, or extreme ugliness.  Remnants are what is left behind when a celestial being is forced into trauma without destroying its corporeal vessel.  The vessel retains a large portion of the power of the angel, demon, or god that inhabited it, but loses all of the memories of its former host.  Such wretches are often quickly disposed of, but can sometimes persist for many years if they are forgotten.  Finally, Saints are the souls of good people admitted to heaven who choose to come down back to earth to fight the good fight again.  They are impressively powerful, but because they already have a ticket punched for heaven, they are prime targets for damnation or trauma by hell.  Saints, Remnants, and Undead all make okay (if inhuman) character choices.

8 forces: No human can reach the summit of 8 forces unaided, but occasionally the greatest of the chosen and the damned, or the foulest of the undead, will shine brightly enough to gain this much power.  Many obscure ethereal gods also have 8 forces, particularly those with dead or historical cults.  Gifted who reach 8 forces are called the Chosen, and are often extremely important in the battle plans of heaven.  Less than 1 in 1000 humans granted the honor of being gifted becomes one of the chosen.  Damned who reach 8 forces are called the Unholy, and seem to be more common than the Chosen.  Many of the Unholy have been empowered by Lucifer himself, explaining the discrepancy.  The Unholy are frightening to both heaven and hell, and despised by both sides.  Diminished angels and demons, who have suffered severe injuries in the war, have 8 forces, occupying a similar position  in celestial society as 4 force humans do in human society.  Many renegade angels and demons have 8 forces as well, due to the damage incurred in leaving the service of their Superior.  8 Force beings are good PC choices, if one wishes to play a character with great power.

9+ Forces: Nine or higher forces is the realm of true angels and demons, as well as ethereal gods worthy of the name.  Such beings can travel freely between the three planes of existence, and are almost unimaginably powerful to mere humans.  However, angels and demons are also highly limited by the symphony, the manifestation of God's plan for the world.  Any intervention a true angel or demon makes in the world without cloaking somehow will reverberate through and disturb the symphony, alerting other beings of 6 or more forces that trouble is going down.  The killing of a human by unnatural means will create a disturbance which reverberates for miles, certain to draw bad attention from every angle.  True angels and demons make wonderful PCs, but you will need to figure out what kind of angel or demon you're creating.  You can find information about that here

Archangels appearing in this game:

Blandine, Archangel of Dreams:  In the time before the fall, Blandine was the lover of Beleth, creating the celestial realm alongside her favorite being in all creation.  Blandine loved the darkness inside of Beleth, but the love did not allow her to hold on when Beleth fell.  Blandine now serves heaven in the Etherial realm, giving humanity inspiration and visions while fighting a long and brutal war against Beleth.  The servants of Blandine do their greatest work at night, in their sleep.  Blandine's favorite music is soft and ethereal, often speaking of a glorious future, while maintaining a delicate, dreamlike quality.  In the final battle, she will stare across the battlefield at  Beleth, a look of profound sadness on her face.

David, Archangel of Rock  For thousands of years, David was an angel of structure, and social order.  Yet, in the last 50 years, linguistic shifts have made him most closely associated with a particular genre of music.  The stoic archangel doesn't mind, and has adapted admirably.  David believes strongly that rock music can promote an ideology of strength and unity, and considers it a great victory whenever someone unironically plays the national anthem on electric guitar.  David likes music that is loud, to the point, and affirming.  He favors power ballads and Christian Rock, and bears a soft spot in his heart for anime theme songs.  In the final battle, David will stand firmly on the plain of Megido, his servants full in their resolve to not budge one inch, no matter what comes.

Eli, Archangel of Creation  Eli is a creative soul, and was formerly one of the most powerful Archangels in all of heaven, before he simply left his citadel in 1957 with no forwarding address, and but a single commandment etched in the stone of his sacred Mosque:  "Do as thou wilt; but be cool."  Eli has wandered the earth since, apparently mad, and attracting the ire of the rest of heaven.  He is a being of immense beauty, and at least the third most sexually adept being in the entire universe.  Eli has been known to make demons repent of their evil with a night of lovemaking and tender cuddling.  Eli's favorite music shifts constantly, but he prefers anything that is avant garde or experimental.  He has even been known to genuinely enjoy spoken word albums.   In the final battle, Eli will walk between his scattered forces with a bag full of bagels, offering a bagel to anyone who wants breakfast before the final battle between good and evil.

Gabriel, Archangel of Fire:  As God's messenger, Gabriel did good work for the Lord.  Yet the fact that he was ordered to assist in founding two contradictory religions (Islam and Christianity) eventually got to him, and he retreated to a volcano in heaven, taking on a female form for unknown reasons.  After Gabriel brooded for a good millennium or so, she finally emerged from her volcano with a sense of purpose:  to punish the evil.  Her servitors are some of the most merciless angels around, and she delights in the punishments they deliver.  Gabriel is considered dangerously close to falling, yet her rage is genuinely righteous fury.  What is evil is not her rage and violence, but the intense pleasure she takes in striking the wicked.  Gabriel likes ballads expressing pain and betrayal, and her realm is quite possibly the only place in heaven you will ever hear Alanis Morissette played in heaven.  In the final battle, Gabriel will explode like a volcano, letting all of her built up fury spread out to the ends of the earth.

Marc, Archangel of Trade: Marc is the archangel of labor and honest commerce, the inventor of currency, and the greatest negotiator and economist under heaven.  Marc is principally a promoter and a seller, and in large part responsible for the megachurch phenomenon.  His favorite music is any good advertising jingle, or song that can be purposed to the same end, without inspiring greed or other sinful behavior.  In the final battle, Marc will be looking for every opportunity he can to get ahead of his foes, exploiting every nook and cranny of the situation to eke out a profitable solution.   Just like in business.

Novalis, Archangel of Flowers:  Novalis is the patron of peace, and one of Eli's last remaining allies among the Archangels.  While Eli works to restore the honor of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Novalis works to preserve the sanctity of nature and human culture, trying to preserve what is good and innocent against the culture of fear and loathing.  This can be difficult when she is also coincidentally the Archangel of medicinal herbs.  Novalis likes folk songs and ditties.  She even composes more than a few of them, in various guises.  In the final battle, Novalis will call forth an infinite field of flowers to mourn the dead of the battle, tears streaming down her face and becoming the thorny roses with which her servitors will fight the demonic horde.

Yves, Archangel of Destiny:  Every human being has a destiny, a great accomplishment that will one day be recorded as one of the brightest moments in the history of the world.  Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech, Joan of Arc's victories against the English, and the Beatles at the Ed Sullivan show were all people fulfilling their destiny.  Yves was the first soul created by God, and works to make sure as many destinies get fulfilled as possible, a thing he can manage because he controls the Book of Destiny, as well as the libraries of time, where everything that ever was, is, shall be, or might be is recorded.  Yves strictly controls access to his archives, but gives just enough information to his servants to allow them to ensure destiny can go on without a hitch.  Yves isn't known to listen to music, but he is often heard humming a strange little tune, and it sounds amazingly good.  When asked about it, the old Archangel simply says "You'll see."  In the final battle, Yves will protect the archangel of children, and give up his long life to a new incarnation in his own destiny.

Demon Lords and Ladies Appearing in this Game:

Andrealphus, Demon Prince of Lust:  Andrealphus is indisputably the most sexual being in the universe, yet no less of an authority than Lilith asserts that Eli is a much better lover.  Such emasculation has filled Andre with loathing, and he frequently takes his aggressions out on servitors, teaching them a few things about torture in the process.  Andrealphus demands sex, and he demands it constantly, often granting his servants unusual "features" to use in pursuit of erotic power.  Andrealphus likes salsa music, anything with obscene lyrics demeaning women and men, and the kind of music played only in porno and really cheap bars.  In the final battle, Andrealphus will rape his way through the legions of heaven, feeling the entire thing was a horrible waste, considering what could have been achieved by their gentle seduction into the ways of being his slaves.

Beleth, Demon Princess of Nightmares: Beleth truly loved the light inside Blandine, but her curiosity and pride caused her to fall to Lucifer's side.  Unlike most Demon Princes, Beleth simply HATES humanity with a passion rivaled by few beings in the universe.  She hates them with all of her heart for separating her from her lover, and wishes to torture them in their minds.  Forever, if possible.  Blandine desires strongly that man live a long life full of fear and nightmares, and thus finds that the modern world suits her.  Blandine likes any sort of music that humans don't like, finding a particular joy in the soundtracks of horror movies.  Playing the audio of the shower scene in Psycho at high volume is a remarkably effective aid to summoning her.  In the final battle, Beleth will stare across the battlefield at Blandine, a look of profound sadness on her face.

Fleurity, Demon Prince of Drugs:  The demon prince of drugs is a title that changes hands a lot, but Fleurity has actually managed to make the word a household name.  Fleurity promotes both the drug culture and the war on drugs, thereby driving millions to consciously break the law and engage in immoral behavior.  He has by doing so gained the personal and eternal enmity of Eli and Novalis.  Fleurity is sometimes called "Hell's Assassin" for his ability to kill talented and powerful people's hopes, dreams, and even lives.  The Demon Prince of Drugs counts gangsta rap as his favorite music, giggling madly while listening to it.  In the final battle, Fleurity will pray for divine intervention to stop the entire thing, for he has no place in a world where either good or evil have won.

Furfur, Demon Prince of Hardcore:  Furfur is the newest demon prince, having gained his title six months ago in a complicated gambit involving the legendary "Song of Satan" which compels a personal appearance by Lucifer himself, and a rock concert.  Furfur demands violence and aggression from his servants, but as a new Demon Prince hands out power and influence like poisoned candy at halloween.  Furfur lives like a rock star, slowly carving out a kingdom for himself in hell, by making spaces between the demons of wrath and the demons of gluttony.  Furfur desperately wants to make a name for himself, and he wants to prove that his servants are "totally [explitive deleted] metal."   Furfur is not known to be able to string two sentences together without using an expletive.  He loves beyond all reason any music for which the terms "cacophony" or "loud and violent noise" are applicable.  In the final battle, Furfur will form the mosh pit to end all mosh pits, and it will be the most hardcore thing to ever happen.  Ever.

Lilith, Demon Princess of Freedom:  Lilith is the consummate negotiator of hell, even something of a diplomat.  Because she never actually fell, she has considerable freedom to associate with heaven, and does so on a very regular basis, making deals with every side in the war.  Unlike the other Demon Lords, Lilith has no long term goal for humanity, or axe to grind.  She simply does what she must when she must to ensure that she is free, and makes sure that her servants can also be free of anything that binds them.  Including petty morality and restrictive laws.  Like not being able to kill people for your share of the will.  Lilith's musical tastes are many and varied, and she prides herself on her freedom to change favorite genres at any time.  Lilith will not be present at the final battle.

Nyabbas, Demon Prince of the Media: Nyabbas is a minor demon who rose to incredible heights of power in the 20th century, slowly gathering up control of every media outlet on earth.  He spreads an ideology of consumerism and gluttony, working with particular effort to support Andrealphus, who he feels can quite possibly overturn religion as the most important thing on the mind of humanity.  Nyabbas absolutely LOVES top 40 hits, and plays them ruthlessly and inescapably wherever he can.  In the final battle, Nyabbas will film everything, and later sell it as a documentary entitles "Danger From Our Skies: When Angels Attack."

Saminga, Demon Prince of Death: Saminga is the oldest of the active demon lords, doing his work since 3000 BC.  Saminga desires nothing more than the eradication of humanity and its subsequent reanimation as a zombie horde.  He's a complete idiot, and sends more souls to heaven than he has ever sent to hell.  Saminga is paranoid, brutish, and completely lacking in creativity.  Unfortunately, he thinks he's a virtuoso.  Saminga takes himself completely seriously, and never laughs.  The other demon lords hate Saminga intensely for being a parody of a dark lord, but simply can't unseat him.  Saminga does not like music, but he likes the sounds a person makes when screaming with a blade through a lung.  In the final battle, Saminga will laugh like hell, held aloft on a throne of skulls and bonus by a group of zombies, while they carry him across the battlefield so that he can decapitate angels with his scythe.  And laugh.  And use their skulls as hand puppets.  And then reanimate them as zombies.  And laugh.

I've got a few different potential characters in my head right now,  having a bit of a hard time choosing between them.

Wow...never thought someone would bring IN to the boards...such a little known setting, at least where I've been...

So, I've got some questions regarding all this - hopefully, they won't keep me from playing...

Question 1: Is this a play-by-post, or an AIM game, like the other IN rock band game I've been hearing about?

Question 2: How should we go about the categories of importance (Vessel, Skills, Artifacts, Servant, Songs, Attunements)?  Obviously, they can't all be 10, but they aren't all 0 either...is there some sort of guideline we should operate by...?

Question 3: Are we playing as angels, demons, both?  (I can't really see angels and demons in the same band...)

Question 4: What's to keep us from having an insane amount of Forces, and simply steamrolling over all those that oppose us?  (I would assume honor and wanting to have a good time, but you never know...)  Is there a cap on Forces for starting characters?

Question 5: Are there any limits on choirs and Servitors?  Meaning, in the original gameworld, an angel from any choir could serve any Archangel - there could be Ofanim who serve the Archangel Lawrence (who is a Malakim).  Is that unchanged, or not?

Question 6: There is a fansite of IN that details the possible usage of an eighth choir, the Grigori aka the Watchers...are you willing to look over it (I can try and find a link), or is this a no-go?

Question 7: Is there an overall plot to this, or what?

Final Question: How many players, how long is this running, what can we expect?  (Okay...last three questions)

I think that's all for now...

1. Play by post, due to its position in the group roleplays wanted board.  :)

2. Having all of your priorities add up to 10 is a good guideline.  If you're in the mood for it, you could also have your priorities add up to 3 x your forces, but there's no restriction.

3. Each player will choose to either be part of their own musical act, or join the band(s) of other players.  Angels and demons are both perfectly allowed, although you will need a bit of finesse to be in the same band.  (The servants of most archangels and demon princes in the game can get away with close association with the enemy though.)

4. Technically, the upper bound of player characters allowed in the game are servitor angels.  I have included no discussion of word bound angels, and it is my opinion that angels cannot progress beyond 12 forces without having a unique word.  Even still, 12 force angels are extremely rare, and probobly a horrible fit for this game.  More forces means more duties and more restrictions, as well as more political baggage.

5. All angel and demon types can serve any Superior, with the exception that Andrealphus does not work with the undead, save for vampires.

6. For simplicty's sake, I would like to keep the grigori out of the game.  This is a game about a battle of the bands for the hearts and minds of humanity, and the grigori don't really fit that vision very well.

7. The main plot of the game is that, in one particular summer in the year 201X, Heaven and Hell take an active interest in the popular bands touring at the time, provoked by deadly riots inspired by Furfur.  The bands affiliated heaven and hell start working full time to battle for the souls of humanity, and to corrupt and sabotage each other.  Direct combat is a no go, but many types of clever manipulation and seduction are quite possible.

1. Okay.

2. If I may suggest, I did some math, and I think the best guideline is to have all the numbers for priorities add up to 3*Forces - at Forces 9 (Base for angels), the average number is 4.5 - so, assuming that everyone has at least one category ranked at zero (completely unimportant), then the average is, well, average - 5.4.

3. ...I'm confused.  The plot is about angels and demons competing for the souls of people thru music, and are encouraged to sabotage/undermine each other, yet are in the same group?  Wouldn't that be sabotaging yourself?  I don't get it.

4. Okay, so, for a general sense, Angels/Demons will be Forces 9 or 10, maybe 11, but nothing over that...

5 & 6. Okay, cool.

7. Gotcha...though, like I said earlier, I can't see how Angels & Demons being part of the same band, and yet competing for human souls doesn't end up disastrously...I REALLY don't get it.

But, okay, I've got concept ideas - all Angels, though.  (Sorry, never could resist playing the good guys)

The Great Triangle

The game isn't just about one band.  It's about MULTIPLE bands on tour.  That's what the game is about.  Every player is definately NOT going to be in the same group.  That would be impossible to manage.  (even with everybody on the same team)

Character priorities are inherently qualitative, so I just want people to fill them out without worrying about mathematical details.

Black Rabbit

I have only read briefly on In Nomine, but if your willing to black box it a little...

Joe Read (Human, Force 6)
aka "Smoking Joe Read" "Chicago Rails"

Lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the 4 piece "Joe Read Band"

Vessel: Well known on the folk rock scene, Joe is a haggard looking Caucasian man of dubious heritage from the swamps of Louisiana.
Skills: Joe knows how to sing like whiskey and cigar smoke, play a guitar like a kid out in the rain and write songs like Mama Read bakes a beesting... which is mighty fine.
Artifacts: Joe has a writing pad given to him by the Archangel Yves. When Joe writes new songs in this pad they tend to prophetic in nature if mostly hidden in riddles and sometimes obscure.
Servants: The Joe Read Band: Henry "Hal" Waterford (Bass Guitarist, Harmonica), Angela "Sour Puss" Lilly (Keyboard/Piano, Singer) & Robert "Bigfoot" White (Drummer).
Songs: Joe has no supernatural powers
Attunements: Yves has slightly attuned Joe to the destinies of humans around him. When singing Joe will sometimes sing impromptu lyrics to a song to that encourage to fulfill, give helpful information about or warnings about dangers too, listeners destinies. This "gift" is not something that Joe has direct control over but rather just comes out...

I can obviously flesh this out more, just give me a heads up.

Elohim

The shedim known as Amal has been a creature bent on corruption since its fall in the war against heaven.  In the early days,  it took great delight in random possession of its victims driving them and those around it deeper and deeper into depravity with each passing day.  Still,  it never quite felt that what it was doing was particularly worthy of a creature of the pits.  It wasn’t far reaching,  at most it was local corruption that was easily rooted out when the agents of heaven’s eyes fell upon the taint.  It was rather angry at the loss of all its hard work in Sodom.

The creature was a servant of Andreaphelus but,  this change when a new demon prince appeared on the scene.  Nybas the demon prince of media,  offered ways to corrupt on  a wider scale…  to transform humanity not only through the simple act of possession but through the bombardment of their souls with mass media.  Amal was one of the first demons to seek out Nybas’ patronage.

In the early days,  Amal worked behind the scenes.   It played various roles but it didn’t come into its own until Hollywood transformed into what it is today.  The deification of the celebrity…  and Amal knew its place.

The creature enjoys taking hold of blossoming your talent,  and corrupting it…  sometimes never even entering the body of its targets but pulling the world down around them using their entourage and family to drive them deeper and deeper into corruption.  It was been the cause of the destruction of many child stars lives,  and in the present,  recently left a big name Pop Starlet in shambles,  after destroying her life,  and shaving her head as one last insult…

Now,  it has found a new beautiful young female talent…  once more a pop singer.  It will lead her down the path of corruption, and use her as an instrument to corrupt her

I'd like to play a drummer allied with Gabriel.

I'm thinking Gifted or Chosen...possibly Saint, back from the Crusades to fight the good fight.  :D

I'll think more and post.
