The Y chromosome isn't dying after all; it's actually evolving.

Something about the decaying Y-chromosome theory never sat right with me; now, there's evidence to back up my vague mistrust!

Oh my. Wonder what it's evolving to?

Swine flu.

Slowly but surely, bearers of the Y-chromosome are becoming sick pigs.

Wait, nevermind, we've been called that for years already.

It's not evolving into anything in particular (as, say, an organism would); instead, it's been developing and adding genes by duplicating itself, as it says near the end of the article.

So, the chimp gene is decaying faster than the human MSY... both are desperately trying to save themselves by applying duplicates of strands over and over again... and they take this as good news?

I like the cock as much as the next person, but they seem to be reaching. *goes in search of study*

Paradox

Yeah Trieste; I wouldn't necessarily call repeated duplication "evolution" either, I suppose.

Well, our whole genome is only the four chemicals, so evolution is subjective, but considering one of the last-ditch repair mechanisms for detected DNA damage is also wildly replicating around tangles and snarls in DNA (translesion synthesis) which can do more harm than good (although it's better than not having any DNA at all)...

I don't pretend to be an expert on DNA. I'm not. But it just seems like they'd be getting ahead of themselves to say one way or the other with what they appear to have.
