Trying to get more direct commentary from people about the Ons and Offs system, so please place suggestions here if you have any, thank you : )

I don't see the WoD d10 system. Unless it goes with something that's arleady on. Also the mythology setting genre would nice to be there.

This thread is for genres : )  The World of Darkness systems are called 'storyteller'.

Yeah I know, that's why I made the edit. >.>

I'd suggest Anime. It doesn't mean much by itself but it's not mutually exclusive to anything, like Romance or Comedy.

Haibane

I have this feeling we discussed anime before and it falls into that category where a game/story is based off media such as a TV show, movie, book or even poem. These sorts of games use the original media as a basis but in themselves said media don't necessarily define the genre or the setting.

So if 'media based play' needs to be flagged up as an option, what category does it fall under?

HairyHeretic

Canon? Could refer to any kind of existing media .. book, comic, tv, film, computer game, etc.

Yes, that works. Missvigilant has just raised the very same issue over on the Settings thread:

Are you suggesting 'Canon' as a genre and each person elaborates individually, or are you suggesting we have another heading alongside Settings, Genres and Systems, that being 'Canon' where we can list various fan-based media that most commonly inspire our games?

I'm not talking individual TV show titles here - we'd have a list far too long, but for a start 'Anime', 'Harry Potter', 'Buffy', and a few of the most popular media could go there.

HairyHeretic

Depending on how the coding might be, maybe as an addition to the genres.

Genre - Like : Neutral : Dislike : Canon : Either : Generic

And you would select one from each set of three.

Ooh, I get this. Not sure it would work, though - I think it fractures canon too much. I think canon would be more useful to have as a separate genre category, not as an option within the list of genres.

People who would like to RP canon, then, would list what games/movies/books/anime they're willing to RP in their ONs and OFFs.

And people like me who would prefer to never have to RP canon, can list it as such and never show up in a search for canon roleplayers.

You see how at the moment we have the list of genres along the left, with the options to select like, neutral and dislike?

Put another 3 columns beside those .. canon, either, generic.

For the sci fi genre I select 'like' from the first set, and 'either' from the second, showing I'm happy to play in both canon and generic sci fi games.

That any clearer?

It is. And its rather cunning too and gives a very clear picture of a person's preferences.

HairyHeretic

It is indeed a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel :)

Except that it would be even more cunning if you replaced 'generic' with 'original'. In fandom an original character is a non-canon one so that heading then implies a game set in, say, the Star Trek universe but not based on any particular iteration of said universe from TV shows or movies.

HairyHeretic

True, but the set refers to genres and not characters. Playing in a Star Trek or Star Wars game, whether with original or canon characters, would still be a canon genre.

I'm confused by what you mean with 'generic' then? In terms of Canon as a choice.

I might be in the wrong thread I think.

Canon/fandom isn't a genre, it's a setting, so I think this discussion should be in the Settings thread, where my comment then makes sense.

HairyHeretic

Star Trek, Star Wars, those would be sci fi canon settings to me. A sci fi story with space craft, aliens, and so on, with no clearly defined universe, would be generic (as I would define it here).

I could point you towards a story of mine as an example of a generic sci fi setting. Chains of Command: It would fit the definition of a sci fi story, but doesn't take place in any canon universe or setting, though incorporates ideas from at least a couple of different ones. To me, that's generic, as opposed to canon.

Thanks. I understand, we just disagree. I still think this discussion belongs in the Setting thread though, not in Genres.

HairyHeretic

Well, since Veks is doing the coding, if the idea is good we'll leave him figure out where to put it for best effect.

Of course, I certainly agree with that! *huggles*

And whether its used or not, or wherever it is used, it's still a cunning plan.

Hi -- I'm a totally uninformed newbie compared to everyone else who's been commenting so far, so feel free to take my remarks with a grain of salt.  :-)

Looking at the list of genres, I find several of the terms completely foreign, and don't find the current floating-cursor descriptions very helpful.  That's not meant to sound critical in any way, and it may result entirely from newbie inexperience ... but for example, the sub-categories of fantasy and sci-fi are lost on me.  Is there any way to provide further explanation, either on the page or elsewhere?

I also recognize most of the terms as popular types of stories or categories of fiction or film, but I wonder if people are really out there who frequently roleplay under all those descriptions.  For example, are there people who have a habit of doing "Philosophical" roleplays, or "Tragedy" roleplays?

Finally, and most importantly, I worry that most of the sexual roleplays I've done wouldn't fall under any of the genres listed.  My roleplays so far have tended to focus almost exclusively on human dom/sub relationships and the sexual activity in those relationships.  If they were films or books, they might be loosely categorized as Drama or General Fiction, or more likely just Adult or Pornography.  ::)

I guess my biggest suggestion is that there ought to be some kind of "catch-all" generic term for general sex RPs, kind of like an "Other" category, for RPs that deal mostly with just human relationships and sex.  They may have elements of a Comedy or a Thriller or what have you, but they don't feature any of those elements exclusively enough to be properly described that way.

The closest terms I can think of are "Realism" or "Erotica" ...  ??? Sorry for the length, thanks for reading.  :-)

Unishifter

To clarify what I said from earlier, I really did mean anime as a genre, since even though it's diverse as it is, it's got its own set of tropes and quirks that people often tend to feel... strongly about, one way or another. I've currently got two threads going, for example, that have a very strong anime vibe to them, despite not being based on any particular show.

Although I do think including at least a little something for canon-based RPs, in genres or settings, would be a good idea.

I agree. Could we have a general genre please of 'Erotica'? I admit I come to E for one reason and one reason only - sexual titillation in role-plays. I think all my games could just be called 'erotica' and be done with it, I am not ashamed to admit that that might even be the only genre I'd tick.

What about a horror genre? I love RPing like Resident evil style storyline.
