She likes the idea that she’ll be able to concentrate on her work without interruption, but unbeknown to her she is not the only inhabitant. A malevolent (or mischievous / playful / mournful if you prefer) spirit has haunted the place for many years frightening off anyone who dared to move in. Even her publisher rarely visits and never stays for more than a day or two.

Will the ghost take to the new inhabitant or try to drive her out?

My character can be adapted to suit any twists you may have in mind. She can be lesbian/Bi/straight, Chaste or Promiscuous, a writer of romances or erotica. The role can be romantic, extreme or anywhere in between. I’m open to all suggestions.

Here's a possible opening to the story

Catherine closed the huge iron gates and drove slowly through the wooded driveway to the house. She parked her car at the rear of Carlton Manor and stepped out onto the gravel courtyard. Even from the back of what her publisher described as ‘his cottage’ she was overawed by the majesty of the building. Red brick walls supported an Oak frame and huge diamond leaded windows let the sunlight flood in. She followed the path around to the front and stopped dead in her tracks to gaze upon the breathtaking vista that met her. How could a writer fail to inspired by such a sight? A winding path lead through a meadow, grazed short by two dozen sheep that paused to look up and regard her with indifference before continuing their meal. Her eyes followed the path to a pier on a massive expanse of water, close by a pagoda and boat house and she couldn’t help wonder if she’d be lucky enough to find a boat inside.

She pulled out the key to a modern lock built into an ancient door and heard the resounding click as the bold drew back. The ornate handle was stiff but gave with a little pressure and the door swung effortlessly open. The floors were swept and the furniture uncovered in readiness for her arrival, just as Jack had promised it would be. She left her bags in the car and entered the hallway, pushing open the door to the main living area; a huge open space that reached up into the rafters. She dropped her handbag onto the leather sofa that looked out over the lake and flopped down beside it. How could anyone who owned such a place live in a small flat in Chelsea? She unzipped her boots and stood up. The cool limestone floor kissed and soothed her tired feet as she began to explore. Next door was a massive newly fitted kitchen with granite work tops and a slate tiled floor the fridge was stocked with fresh food and the wine rack was well provisioned. She casually examined a bottle and carefully replaced it, looking through the rear window to her Car on the standage outside. She unlocked the back door and stepped out onto the smooth gravel in her bare feet. She’d not locked her car and pulled her two suitcases from the boot. She held the car keys in her teeth and slammed the boot lid, struggling with the heavy bags. She dropped her cases on the kitchen floor and pressed the remote to lock and alarm her vehicle. Back in the main hall a beautifully carved staircase wound upwards, and she followed her nose into the main bedroom. A mahogany four-poster bed dominated the room, it’s hand carved pillars reaching almost to the ceiling. She dropped the bags by the walk-in dressing area and returned to the bed, her feet warmed and tickled by a Tibetan runner.

“Wow!” she said and fell back onto the fresh sheets and clean duvet, looking up through the transparent material that seemed to hover above the bed. Her white blouse had risen up slightly to expose her stomach and a cool refreshing breeze danced over her belly, icy fingers slipping into the top of her jeans.

She smiled to herself; she was going to enjoy her stay here.
