How About Some D&D?

You know...a little Dungeons and Dragons never hurt anyone.  You'll just start worshipping Satan and find yourself chasing alligators through the sewers with makeshift swords...but those are trivial side effects...that and...ETERNAL DAMNATION...BWAHAHAHAHA!

Amazing how people actually took that shit seriously though.

But that aside, I'm looking to boot up a nifty game of classical D&D.  Back when creating a character was less complicated than a large corporation's income taxes.  Just straight, clean Second Edition.  You'll start out at first level...kobold fodder, expendable, just another batch of greenhorns who think you have something to prove.

But maybe--just maybe--you do...

And if you do...IF you have the right mix of gumption, luck, steel, and get up one more time than you're knocked down...then this world I'm inventing has a place for you.

The starting scenario is deviously simple: you are shipwrecked.  You bought passage on a ship headed for a colony, and the ship met with a fierce storm.  Starting equipment is simple: you don't have any!   Where are you?  You don't know!  Your first order of business will likely be to try to find whatever's left of the ship, or its equipment washed up somewhere.

And then...it's up to you.  This game will be open-ended.  Anything can happen.  Your character could end up as anything from breeding stock for orcs to king of his own kingdom, or anything in-between.  Founding a temple, running a guild, being an intrepid explorer or mercenary...all of these are possible.  All levels of sexual content are possible, with both consensual and non-consensual situations possible (just as in real life itself).

Caustic

So would this be a strict system game?  And what kind of character types would be expected?

I'm not going to be religious about the rules, but yes, this will be a system game, though not a strict one.  I'm certainly amenable to bending the rules whenever creativity requires it.

As for character types, you can come in with anything except munchkins.  No drow elves...

I'm tempted to ban all elves.  Don't get me wrong.  I have nothing against elves per se.  Elves are a noble race, and decent folk.  But it seems like whenever I open a game, every...fracking...character...is...a...goddam...elf.  It gets old.

I don't think  I'll ban elves, but I'll probably cap the total number of elves at two.

Can I play a thief?  so i can never backstab anyone unless it's just the perfect situation?  *grins*  seriously.  I am interested but no longer have any of my source books.  They've got to be available somewhere on line.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  And if so, I'd be willing to wait to see what others play before deciding on a character.

OldSchoolGamer

Sorry I was away for a couple days.  My main hobby is world domination, and tending to this does take some time.

I think I'm going to spice up the game a little bit.  I'm going to allow evil-aligned characters into the game.  Now, "evil" doesn't necessarily mean "constantly plotting against all good characters."  Evil just means being in the game of life for one's own gain, to satisfy one's own lusts and desires, and to hell with the rights of others.

Where cooperating with and even at times supporting Good characters is in line with advancing an Evil character's personal agenda, the Evil character will likely cooperate and work harmoniously with others.  But where interests diverge..this is when alignment differences will emerge.

Alignments will be kept secret, known only by the player of the character and myself.  (A Know Alignment spell may reveal an alignment, as may other clues as the story progresses.  If your character wakes up one morning and finds herself being raped by the barbarian, that's probably a good clue said barbarian's alignment is something south of Neutral.)

Know that if you choose to attack another PC (something I neither encourage nor forbid, with a caveat below), then you ipso facto agree to accept any and all consequences, up to and including character death, that may result.  Characters that exist solely to assassinate other characters will be forbidden.  In other words, it's okay if you develop an ideological rift with another character and want to attack, or you lust after a maiden, but I won't let you just go around bumping off everyone else's character for the sake of bumping them off; this is not some twisted version of Survivor, nor an arena game.

RubySlippers

How will character generation work. I will follow my normal pattern role in order and see what works.  ;D

Well its given me two nice character so far. Both I would never normally play given a choice of point assignment.

But since its 2nd edition I could have a Wis of 12 and be a cleric and such.

Race will likely be human.

OldSchoolGamer

These ideas all sound good.  Here's how I'm going to do points.  You start with 78 points.  Any score up to 14 is available on a point by point basis.  A 15 costs 16, a 16 18, a 17 20, and an 18 23.

I'm going to borrow a popular idea from 3.5 D&D: at every fourth level, you can add a point to the ability score of your choice.  There will also be magical items that can raise scores, uncommon but not unheard of.

I will assign wizard spells.

Go ahead and PM your characters to me.  Human characters can be from any ethnic group, by the way.

Well, let's get those characters rolling.  Here's an intro to help you get those creative juices flowing, and to begin to "flesh out" the world of adventure which will be testing your mettle.

Your journey began in Sunriver's Gulf, a large town on the outskirts of the Kingdom of Noria.  The Kingdom is old and powerful...and for that reason, well on its way to becoming ossified.  Bureaucrats push papers, taxes are high, and getting on a bad-guy list of some kind is all too easy.  The jails are full of petty criminals, and laws are draconian.

But the Kingdom's weakness is a second-rate navy...and so much of the Kingdom's commerce is carried out by mercenary ships and independent freighters.  This provides an opportunity for those seeking escape...while the independents are supposed to report all passengers to the Norian Legate prior to departure, mercenaries are not well known for their adherence to procedure.   A small sack of silver and gold given to a ship's captain will almost always enable passage, no questions asked...

For whatever reason, you have decided to leave Noria via a freighter bound for Far Strider Hills, a colony about two weeks' sail from Sunriver's Gulf.  The colony itself is part of the Kingdom, but there is no Legate, and no one bothers to check who debarks into the rough port quarters.  Once there, anyone can blend in with the steady stream of fortune-seekers...or become one themselves.

The lands around Far Strider Hills are ripe with both danger and opportunity.  The forests are dense, and the hills have deposits of gold, silver...and orcs and wargs and hill giants and trolls.  Tales of ruins and lost civilizations abound.  Stories of a mighty empire of jet-black people worshipping strange gods somewhere far to the south of the colony are told around campfires.  Somewhere in the Hills is reputed to be an ancient pair of dragons, one white and one red, whom a tribe of gnolls worship.

For reasons known only to you, you decided to catch a freighter to Far Strider Hills.  You booked passage on the Zori, a fast ship captained by a Burthar, light brown-skinned mariners known to be consummate traders, ruthless in battle, but to keep an oath once it is given.  And in exchange for coin, the Burthar captain, Al'kahan, has promised you passage to Far Strider Hills...

But you never make it...

I'm working on my character looks like a Mage/Priestess of Magic with a half-elf racial selection. Now the big problem is hit dice for both are d4 and her physical combat stats are low (no penalties but not high) so will NEED Mage Armor at least. I know you select spells but I hope you are practical about it.  :-\  No she can't wear or use any armor either due to her priest class the limitation is similar to a mage. But they have wicked spell access and granted powers for a priest.

Well my character is going to be arcane all over the class lets her learn eight extra languages over the first eight levels including if she wants specific animals per slot, inspire fear, turn undead, improved infravision at higher level and shapechanging and lots of spheres of magic. Plus is a pretty damned good mage for a general practitioner. And is a Scholar Priest kit so can trade off weapon proficienscies for non-weapon ones as a kit benefit. Yes its allowed according to the priests handbook if your a multiclass priest. But FITS the character combination being all into the mystical arts and all so is a bookworm but a cute one.  ;)

Oh GM I suggest give any mage Read magic and Cantrip they are so staple they should be free extra spells and let them choose if a specialist their extra spell. Plus maybe three others. Its just practical all mages need Read Magic and would know Cantrip I would think. Then I suggest one defensive spell, one offensive spell and one miscellaneous spell. Should round out a Level 1 mage pretty well. Plus a specialist gets the extra spell per spell level that should be chosen by the mage I would think its a class special feature almost. Just an idea though. Thanks for the Armor spell its really good in second edition and hell an AC 6 is better than AC 10. Not she is a combatant priest that is what warriors are hired for.

Tell me more about the deity and the priesthood.

schnookums

Well, Lurue herself is the goddess of talking animals and good magical creatures. She's mainly the patron of unicorns and pegasi, but she does have human (and humanoid) followers(the goddess herself being depicted as a Unicorn). She herself is a very whimsical goddess, given to wanderlust and the like and  Her priesthood is fairly loosely organized, with her priestesses working towards providing aid and comfort to the needy, helping dreamers and questers, encouraging the spread of joy and hope (they seem to me to be a bit quixotic, but that's just me.) Her priesthood tend to be struck with wanderlust and the like, very adventurous and that sort. (I'm trying to make a concise version of what they've got in Power's and Pantheons) I can give me detail from the book but that's a basic summery.

The prevalence of priests in the party neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.  I'm not going to reject any character (excepting elves) as long as the character is fair and within the scope of first level.  Now, not having enough wizards and warriors might make YOUR lives more complicated.  But I always leave it to players to negotiate out issues of party balance and composition.

Remember, evil characters are welcome too.
