The most common cause for the light to come on since I've had my car is the gas cap not being put back on properly. I've read that many people experience the same issue because not screwing the gas cap back on properly can happen when your in a rush or if the angle is off when you begin to screw it back on.

Today, I found myself counting how many times the cap turns while I'm screwing it back on before it makes a clicking sound. Last time before the check engine light came on, it turned twice before I heard clicking sound and stopped. This time it turned four times before I heard the clicking sound and stopped.

Cap might be threaded and you need to replace it.
