It's making the rounds on the internet rapidly, as expected, but for anyone who hadn't heard already, the Maine Democratic Senate candidate, Colleen Lachowicz, plays WoW. This has been the basis for a surprisingly comprehensive attack campaign against her by her GOP rivals, including a website "Colleen's World" and paper mailers, drawing from comments made on the official forums and her own blog from as far as three years ago.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1012/82043.html

This is in the PR+C section for obvious reasons, but partisan issues aside (and the obvious jokes about poor taste in games), should this sort of attack be kosher even in the mudslinging cesspit that is modern politics? Should politicians or aspiring politicians be forced to maintain constant professionalism in all aspects of their life, private, both physical and virtual? Or is there still a boundary that shouldn't be crossed, using an opponent's preference for entertainment when they're 'off the clock' and not causing actual harm to anyone as a weapon against them in the public eye?

Callie Del Noire

Well, I appreciate that she plays an assassination rogue...but she's a dirty evil hordie!!!,

I couldn't possibly vote for her because of that.

The fact I'm not registered to vote in Maine helps too.

I hope, all joking aide, that she curb stomps the jerk. I'm still pissed how the GOP turned on Snow in the last cycle.

Beguile's Mistress

Should we pole the elected officials and candidates and see who believes in sparkly vampires or reads/has read/owns "50 Shades..." and while you're at it how many of their family members have breached the walls of conservatism and ideals the GOP says they hold dear.

It's really stupid to take a person's hobbies like this into consideration on such a deep level.  It's part of her but not all of her.

Trieste

I think as the older statesmen (and women, what few of them there are) begin to retire and younger politicians begin to step up, you will see more geeks, gamers, and RPers in politics. It's becoming more mainstream to enjoy digital entertainment, and video games aren't just for nerds any longer.

I think it's hypocritical for the GOP and others to embrace the tool of social media such as Twitter and Facebook as heartily as they have while still pointing fingers at online entertainment. It shows how they think of it as a tool, still, rather than a legitimate way of spending time, seeking out news and entertainment. Youtube and World of Warcraft are both sort of dowager internet by now, and if you're going to embrace one you should really learn to accept the other.

Moraline

It's interesting but I would be more inclined to vote for someone that I know plays World of Warcraft. Although I haven't played it for a long time myself. I think it's cool that she's like the rest of us and not to stuck up to play a game.

If I could vote for you, Colleen Lachowicz, I would.

Well I got sneered at being a table top gamer by my co-workers in the Navy.. had one chief actually held it against me. And my rating was a 'Geek rating'. I used to joke you have something like 4 or 5 types of Male ATs (Avionics Tech): they were all at least one of the following: Gamers, Roleplayers, Computers, Musicians and/or Gearheads.

In the Republican candidate's (tentative, and thin) defense, he supposedly hasn't endorsed the attack ads and doesn't like mudslinging - the Maine GOP just does whatever it feels like without consulting their candidates. Whether that has any truth or not to it is unknown, and doesn't excuse the party itself, but Tom Martin is evidently trying to distance himself from the whole thing.

Because it's so easy to turn back on him and he knows it. I mean.. "My opposition has so little substance and merit to his platform on the issues that he has to go after what I do in my casual time rather than my stance on the actual issues at hand." (Or something similar)

And zing..done at the right time..and he torpedoes..

But you're right Glyph.. it's not just the Main GOP.. there is a LOT of problems with attacking outside the party and candidates..

For example, when John McCain was running against Bush.. he was attacked via robocalls in South Carolina about his adopted daughter.. who was portrayed as his illegitimate child.

Stattick

That attack was clearly over the line.

It can be hard to tell where to draw the line though. For instance, for right or wrong, a candidate's sexual orientation very much is an issue in American politics because of the current battle for gay and trans rights. Video game playing is irrelevant nearly all the time, but if Congress was debating or thinking about a bill that would impact the computer game industry, her being a vid-gamer is actually quite relevant to the conversation. Politics is complicated, nuanced, and it's not always easy to see where the line between what should be public knowledge and what shouldn't be when it comes to candidates. But attacking because someone has a hobby that you don't approve of is silly, unless there's something that at lot of people would consider troubling about the hobby. You know, that the hobby might show something troubling about the candidate. Now maybe the GOP and/or Congresscritter are out of touch enough to think that vid-gaming is troubling. Or maybe their political calculus indicates that they should attack her on that front so old people are less likely to vote for her, since the elderly are often xenophobes.

It was still a silly attack, but I can think of scenarios where the GOP might have thought the attack was worth the risk. On the other hand, it was almost certainly an attempted ad hominem - instead of attacking her platform, they're attacking her to make her platform look bad.

That’s a perfect example of what I was thinking when I read about this.  I’m sure this will lose her a few votes but I bet it gets her as many if not more.  I’m sure there will be geeks who weren’t planning to vote but will support her (or at least look into her more) after seeing this.

I think that the GOP is making a critical failure here and showing the generation gap in the party. They're still in a "Monsters and Mazes" mindset when the world has moved on.

From an ethical standpoint this is silly, yet people will be people and a good politician will take advantage of whatever they can. That being said, there is a generation of people now who have never known life without the internet, and our adapted notions of self which include our personas online will very likely one day clash with more traditional realms like politics. Will we ever have a senator with a furcadia account? Maybe, though I think it's more of a "When?" than a "Will?"

She is being attacked because she plays WoW?  Hell, as Moraline said, it's more likely to make me vote for her if she was my candidate. Even if she plays a Hordie..  kek.

In D&D's official release I thought there was supposed to be a bunch of racism against them. IDK, we usually homebrew it.

Horde comes from ordu, a collection of two or more tumen, a unit of 10,000 Mongol horsemen. They were also noted for their rapacious behavior, though it didn't spread their seed much if at all.

But the tactics orcs display in just about any fantasy setting are pathetic jokes compared to the Mongols. But that's true for most fiction period.

However, it has since lost any sort of ethnic meaning, much like 'Goth' no longer has much to do with the folks who sacked Rome.

I don't know anything about WoW, but if the orcs there are supposed to be based on the Mongols, no wonder the far right doesn't like her.  Genghis Khan was one of the first leaders ever to codify the right to religious freedom for all, and I doubt the Tea Party is really on board with that notion.   ::)

But it does happen. I know at least one guy who was falsely accused of raping a girl. She had consented, but the next day headed for the cops because her parents found out, and she told them she was forced.

In all fairness he was adressing when his father told him about moments where girls will claim to have been raped to get out of trouble because they slept with billy joe out a make out point, and are now carrying a baby.

but the slogan "some girls rape easy" is going to follow that guy to his grave now, think before you speak, lest you wind up chewing leather in a non-erotic fashon.

also interisting bit from a site mod:
QuoteThe underlying problem with all these comments is the belief that there is an enormous amount of women out there claiming to have been raped but who are lying, which is on it’s own, highly offensive. In every discussion about rape, the example of statutory rape where the two partners are close in age ALWAYS comes up, and it is used to de-legitimize the crime as a whole. Yes, there are grey areas of consenting individuals where a 16 year old has sex with her 18 year old boy friend; however, when taken in the context of all the teenagers out there having sex, even with someone who is of age, a tiny sliver of these will ever be treated as criminal acts. And to use those examples to characterize a heinous crime really shows the backwards attitude of many (not all) conservative men have towards women. It has been shown that rape is no more falsely reported than any other crime, but we don’t here conservative man after conservative man taking umbrage with all the people who falsely report a burglary, as if a few examples would bring everyone’s mugging into the shadow of doubt. As long as they continue to discuss a very large problem under the narrow context of only statutory rape, they will always ignore the real victimization of women. And that is why they are seen as anti-woman.

This is stupid on so many levels. It's one thing to criticize someone for their political stances which are much more important than someone's hobbies, but to attack someone on something that does not in and of itself have any baring on the political climate of the nation is ridiculous. So what if someone in politics plays WoW? There are people in politics who make a pass time of mismanaging funds, and general abuse of power and they make a fuss over someone playing World of Warcraft. It's not like she's killing people in real life. It's fantasy for God's sake.

Yup.  It's likely going to stay that way until more of the stodgy, old men at the top die off, unless someone comes out of the centrist demographic with enough charisma to pull in the saner Republicans.  I still think it's a schism waiting to happen.

Indeed. I've been thinking the same thing for some time. However I don't believe I could ever support that party after some of the things they've done.I'm honestly hoping for one or two of the third party groups to rise  to prominence so at the very least we aren't left with this obnoxious partisan deadlock. So that they might balance things out.

This is one of the reasons George Washington warned against the formation of political parties. He believed that factionism would eventually tear the country apart and lead to divides that would create a political climate unfavorable for anyone in the country.

Given the way candidates act, we'd do this anyway.  Adams and Jefferson gave birth to negative campaigning, but genuine disagreements of policies and a shared desire to gain the Presidency were instrumental in creating a negative atmosphere and us versus them mentality.

True.Humans are bound to band together with like minded individuals no matter what measures are taken to prevent factionism, but I think it begins a much greater problem when we codify or formalize certain groups.

Also I fail to see how this is modern.... Been in politics for a while now. Also it's like golf in that your attacking a person that enjoys a certain pursuit if its gambling, playing Wow, or whatever examples you comE up with it is a excuse to attack a persons character regardless if it is golf or... Idk fishing. Or eating sail fish or attacking a bear in skyrim (a much better game)

Personally, I am judging them individually as I am reminded of an old quote:

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
Edmund Burke
Irish orator, philosopher, & politician (1729 - 1797)

Until one or some of your claimed moderates do something about the Tea Party leadership, they are, to me, just as culpable.  Maybe I am being overly judgmental, but at the same time, the amount of hate and vitriol spewed by these people during this election was outright disgusting.

I want to point out that I do agree that some of the GOP might be good men and women, but until they do something about the bad ones...

What people don't seem to realize or acknowledged is that we're a tribal species, we gather into these little groupings, or we put them into labelled cliques, the Jocks, the Popular Kids, the Geeks, to use High School, but they're totally translatable to mote adult groupings, Sports Stars, Celebrities and...  Well, OK us Geeks never really get away from that label...

And worse we all attribute certain characteristics to these groups, accurately or not.  It's instinctive, which doesn't make it right, but it is incredibly common and will be part of every day life.  No matter how wrong it truly is, it's what humans do.

Actually, most golf courses are public.  Country Clubs do have exclusive memberships (more a factor of money than anything else), but anyone can golf at the public courses.

Just sayin'  :P

Shows how often I play golf that doesn't involve little windmills.  ;)

My experience with golf of the other sort is limited to the sportscasters effusing over Tiger Woods, and a scene in Rising Sun where Sean Connery's character is confronted over accepting a golf membership (over $1,000 value), and asked how it's different from a (couple hundred dollar) bribe that Wesley Snipes' character took in his past.

Wait, there's another kind of golf?

Yeah, apparently there's the "Go fetch" version. You hit the ball really hard. Then you slowly walk around until you find it. Then you hit it really hard again. You do this at a park while wearing really ugly clothes... um... because you hate nature or something? Sometimes you get hit by lightening because nature hates you back.

I like to play golf.  Well I used to when I was able to stand for that long (though I suppose I could always rent a golf cart).  I do not, however get the appeal of watching golf on TV.  Or Hockey.  Or Baseball.  Or Basketball.  Or College Football.

Come to think of it, I only really like to watch pro football, and then only if the Dolphins or the Seahawks are playing.

OT:  The GOP shouldn't have griefed.  Now her opponent got himself a ban until next election.  He's gonna miss out on some epic loot.

I can 'get' any fast moving sport.  Golf, too slow.  Baseball on TV is even pushing it (although I usually follow the stats), but there are at least those times when someone is racing the ball to the plate.  Cycling is probably the slowest-paced sport that I will go out of my way to watch, but there's a certain... aesthetic factor in play, there.   O:)
