General Wei, the infamous and coldly calculating Tiger General, points to the state of the Middle Kingdom and claims that the current Son of Heaven, Emperor Zhang, has lost the Mandate of Heaven. Entire companies in the military have joined his forces, certain that he will win and return order to China. The people who have suffered the most while drought and floods drag them farther into poverty have also joined him, believing that he will bring prosperity back to the Middle Kingdom.

Opinions in the Imperial Court vary. Some suggest a peaceful surrender and abdication in favor of General Wei; others have thrown their support behind the Emperor and call General Wei, previously a popular military figure, a traitor of the worst kind. Most of the Wei hardliners have long since abandoned their posts or were killed by the Wolves of the Wind to preserve order.

However, there are a few key individuals who have stayed behind, secret supporters of General Wei who plan to take matters into their own hands and speed up General Wei's claim to the throne.

Emperor of China, the Son of Heaven [NPC] - The Chinese emperor; has been poisoned by the royal twin who is secretly a Wei supporter. If the traitor prince(ss) is lynched, the loyal twin will gain immunity for one killing - i.e., if someone attempts to lynch him/her, (s)he will survive (by imperial decree); likewise, if the Wei assassins try to kill the loyal twin during the night, he/she will survive. This immunity lasts only once.

Wolves of the Wind [NPC] - Assassins who are loyal to one of the oldest advisors of the court. Shrouded in secrecy, it is this body who has been carrying out the assassinations of the Wei supporters and hardliners who still remained in the Imperial Court. Members of the Court themselves, they listen to gossip and dissent and kill those who are most highly suspected of being traitors.

General Wei, the Tiger General [NPC] - General Wei claims that the current emperor has lost the Mandate of Heaven. Determined not to let the people of the Middle Kingdom suffer any longer, he has started a rebellion that threatens to overturn the Zhang Dynasty. Most of his supporters have fled the Forbidden City (the imperial palace). Factions of the military have defected to General Wei, as have some of the poor who have been hardest hit by droughts and floods in their regions.

The Royal Twins - Incognito for their safety and to provide them both the chance to learn politics from the ground up. One is a loyal supporter of the Son of Heaven; the other has defected to the Wei camp.
  • Loyal Twin (1) - Once per game, the loyal twin can detect the guilt or innocence of one person that is about to be lynched. If the traitor twin is lynched, the loyal twin gains one immunity from a killing.
  • Traitor Twin (1) - One night per game, the traitor twin can spy out a single player's role during a night cycle, instead of attacking someone. During this night, the Wei spies cannot attack kill anyone.

Imperial Court (7) - They have the most to lose if the Wei faction succeeds in their coup d'état, for General Wei has made it clear that he intends to cleanse the entire upper ranks of the imperial hierarchy to regain Heaven's favor. The imperial court consists of influential concubines, as well as the wise advisors who run the bureaucratic workings of the country.
  • Special: Once per turn (day), the remaining members of the Court (including the Wei spies) can choose to lynch a suspected Wei spy from among themselves with a majority vote.
  • Goal: Root out the Wei supporters, and in doing so eliminate the last vestiges of Wei support within the Court.

Wei Spies (3) - There are a few Wei supporters still left in the Imperial Court, all of them skilled noblemen and titled officials who are not afraid to stain their swords with blood if it means cleansing the ranks of nobility and regaining the support of Heaven once again. Where they are, they can relay key information to General Wei, while cutting off the Emperor's support from underneath him.
  • Special: Once per turn (night), the Wei spies and the traitor twin can eliminate one member of the Imperial Court.
  • Goal: Kill all the key officials within the Court, including the Emperor and his most intelligent advisers.

The Dragon General (1) - A powerful military leader who is loyal to the Son of Heaven and directly opposes General Wei.
  • Special: The General can protect one other player from the Wei Spies once each night. He will never choose to protect himself because he is sworn to protect the weak. If the General is targeted by the Wei spies, s/he will die, but will also kill one attacker, chosen randomly, during the fight.

Minister of the Royal Archives (1) - The head of the royal archives is a low-paying but respectable position within the Court. He is relatively poor compared to the rest of the Court, but he is proud of his position and his knowledge.
  • Special: Once per night, this player can determine if a member of the Imperial Court is a Wei spy.

Minister of the Treasury (1) - The most respected and trusted member of the imperial bureaucracy is also the most feared, for it is this minister who may have the greatest amount of power in the Imperial Court.
  • Special: This player can determine the specific role of a member of the Imperial Court by bribing the emperor's favored concubine. Unlike the Minister of the Royal Archives, he can only do this once per game, as rumors of using imperial funds for his own ends could lead to his disgrace and beheading.

Reminders
  • Deception, lying, and misleading is completely allowed in this game. Just remember that it isn't personal.
  • If you send a PM to anybody else in the game, you must CC me in the PM.
  • No information gathered outside of this game (PMs, IMs, etc.) may be quoted directly. However, you can repeat any information that you get in your own words as much as you like.
  • One 'turn' consists of a night (when the spies will choose one person to die) and a day (when players will argue and vote on one person to eliminate).
  • You cannot vote to eliminate yourself.
  • The Wei spies and traitor twin know who their comrades are, but nobody else in the Imperial Court knows who is who.
  • Unlike Val's other games, this game will not have a tiebreaking role. In the event of a tie, a re-vote for only those two players will happen. If there is still a tie, and nobody can be convinced to change their vote, the victim will be decided by a dice roll.
  • If you learn new information, are persuaded to switch, or receive a better bribe offer, you can change your vote until the last vote is tallied.

Two days ago, the Imperial Court had been disturbed into an uneasy tension when whispers that the emperor had been poisoned reached the ears of the many courtiers who remained in the Palace instead of fleeing to their country estates, either by design or fear. He remained ill and delirious, with even the best doctors in the country unable to discern how the poison had been delivered, or what the cure was. The only thing they were certain of was that he would not be well for several days yet; and during that time, the Court was left to its own devices, whispering and gossiping behind screen doors, afraid to say anything with even the servants present.

For who knew whose servant was under whose pay?

Only one thing was sure; the Emperor being poisoned could only mean that there were Wei spies still remaining in the Imperial Court, masquerading as loyalists to Emperor Zhang but traitors in reality (or, in their words, supporters of the virtuous Tiger General). And because nobody knew who they could trust, hostility and suspicion was tangible in every word that was spoken, every action that was taken.

The poisoning of the emperor had happened two days ago. This morning, however, it was clear that the Wei spies were not content to wait for the man's death. One of the esteemed ministers of the court, Chancellor Ru, had been stabbed through the chest; the scattered and broken objects littered around his room were evidence of a fight, one that the skilled swordmaster had lost. He had been staunchly against giving the Wei faction any quarter; it was well known in the Court that he had advised the Emperor to send his military forces to wipe out the rebel Wei leaders, before they could spread any more dissent.

With his death, it was decided; the remaining members of the Court had to take matters into their own hands and flush out the Wei spies, before the entire kingdom fell to poison and treachery.

As the court had decided to take matters into their own hands with the death of Chancellor Ru
Xandi walked into the court to find who had ventured in for the days activities.

She spoke to the court and ask, "How shall we deal with the treachery that exist in the Kingdom? The Wei spy's are obviously among us, we must find them and destroy the threat to the kingdom. Who will join me in my efforts to discover these spies? We must decide today who is with the rebellion and kill all traitors. I am going to throw out a vote for someone who I believe to be a Wei Spy. This person never liked Chancellor Ru and I believe he was responsible for the Chancellors death. Kurzyk Who is with me?"

LadySky

She was sitting silently by the fountain when the lady Xandi appeared and suggested Kurzyk to be a Wei spy. LadySky shook her head sadly, aching with the loss of Chancellor Ru, whom she had long served loyally. Alone and unsure of whom she could trust LadySky was at a loss, confused as to who she thought might have murdered her beloved Ru. At the mention of Kurzyk however, LadySky recalled overhearing a terrible argument between Kurzyk and Ru. Could Chancellor Ru have also suspected Kurzyk?

"I will vote for Kurzyk as well." she whispered, hanging her head and staring into the rippling waters of the fountain, praying for guidance from beyond.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

Kye

Kyrsa had remained quiet thus far, glancing from person to person, studying them intently as she listened to the others speak.  Unlike the others she had no quarrel with Kurzyk and no proof or inkling that he might be one of the spies they were intent on finding.

“I find it odd that you should speak so quickly Xandi.  Many people did not like the Chancellor, that does not make them spies or murderers.  Perhaps you speak so quickly to cover up your own guilt.  For now I place my vote for Xandi," she murmured.

Autumn Sativus

Saffron nodded slightly, as she listened to Kyrsa's logic. She had been listening from a balcony seat near the fountain, to all of the things that had been said. She pondered over the possibilities herself for a few moments before beginning to agree.

"I felt this way also, Kyrsa, that it was strange to speak out about Kurzyk so quickly. We do not know anything of him, yet. I believe that you are covering your own guilt, Xandi, I'm sorry."

Blaed

Najdan had been standing behind his chair as he offend did. Not wanted to sit down, because at a moments notice he could be needed somewhere else. But the talk of spies and people being distrustful had finally made him want to speak up. He moved around to the fount of his chair, so that most of the people could see him.

"It saddens me to see us coming to this. But the facts are that someone among us is a spy. This spy does need to be weeded out. I am sorry, but Xandi, you spoke out ageist your fellow people too soon for me."

Autumn52

It saddens me that so quickly my friends turn on me. Someone had to speak first and it was my understanding that some of you were looking for a reason to get the ball rolling. I am sorry that Kurzyk was the first to be accused however I don't see how my vote against him makes me a spy.

I want to remind you all that although I was the first to speak, it did not take long for others to begin to accuse me. I have only one more comment and that is, if I were a spy would I so quickly speak of killing them?
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Stattick

"I... I am not sure who to believe." Stattick said as he revealed himself. "In all honesty, I don't have reason to suspect either Xandi or Kurzyk. But if I am to vote blindly, it would bother my conscious less if I were to be part of lynching an innocent man then to lynch an innocent woman. So, reluctantly, I will side with Xandi for now, against Kurzyk. Unless someone can convince me of a reason why I should change my vote. I'm... sorry Kurzyk."

Stattick sits, and looks down, with a troubled look on his brow.

Beguile's Mistress

#10
Beguile turned from her contemplation of the gardens and ponds surrounding the court and paced slowly toward the others.  Her slender fingers inserted into the voluminous sleeves of her robes gripped her wrists tightly.  Her grief was deep and painful.  The loss of Chancellor Ru was a grievous blow yet she fought hard to maintain an air of dignity.

I would advise caution in deciding who the traitor is lest we eliminate a friend and valuable ally.  Should Kurzyk prove to be the assassin then, of course, he must be dealt with and harshly, as an example if nothing else.  We must be positive that he, and not another, is the one we seek.  Remember, if you will, a man may disagree with an official but still serve the office loyally.  Angry words in the heat of the moment may only be passion for a point of view.  Would someone bent on the destruction of the Chancellor reveal himself to be antagonistic?

I believe the first to accuse him has done so to throw suspicion away from herself and toward one she would persuade us is a more likely candidate.  Xandi’s accusations have revealed her own treachery.  Eliminating one who is loyal tilts the balance in favor of the traitors.  It pains me, for she has been a friend, but I believe Xandi to be the traitor.

Kurzyk

Listening to the cries voiced against him and greatly saddened by the treachery that had befallen the court, Kurzyk sighed. He knew in politics that perception can sway like wind across a wheat field, and when tides turn, it inevitably turned for the worse. Such was the matter of the state, which in his experience was one of the constants of the universe. However in times of panic, calmness and patience can shine, to help root out those that sought to undermine from within.

Stepping forward and with a humble smile, "To the distinguished members of the court, to the charge posed against me, let me say that my service to the Emperor has been unwavering and in earnest."

Pointing his finger to Xandi, "You were the first to speak. Do you rush so quickly to cast blame to hide your guilt? I believe it is you Xandi."

Autumn52

I appeal to you my fellow loyalist. It seems that the fact that I spoke first has you convinced that I am a spy. Think please about what you do, if I die I will be unable to "help you" find the traitors. I spoke out of loyalty to the throne and the kingdom. I will speak my mind in times of opposition if that is wrong then I suppose I do not understand how to perform my "duties".

I wish I could stand idly by and let others do the hard work of finding the spies and not get involved but as that is not my "role".  I will accept the decision rendered here today.

Please reconsider your decision here today as it will affect the outcome of the kingdom.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Mithlomwen

#14
Mithlomwen had listened quietly to the back and forth between people, taking in everything that had been said, and trying to form her own opinion as to who might be the traitors in their midst.  She did agree with the fact that just because Xandi had spoken out so quickly did not automatically mean that she herself was a traitor.  She had simply been the first to voice her opinion.  Someone had to, and Mith couldn't help but think that whomever it had been would most likely been labeled a Wei spy.

However having nothing to base any guilt or innocence on at this point, she was forced to vote blindly, a fact that did not set well with her at all.  She was of Stattick's belief that if shew were to send an innocent to their death she would much rather it be a man than a woman so taking all of this into account finally voted.  "My heart aches having to vote against one of our own with no evidence to support such accusations, and believe me when I say that I do not do so lightly.  It is with a very heavy heart that I place my vote with Kurzyk and pray that the gods forgive me if he is truly innocent."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Valerian

The days ahead will be filled with difficult decisions, but we must none of us shirk our duty, however heavily it weighs upon us.  I must only hope that there is some wisdom behind the votes for Kurzyk; or at least that good fortune will be with those of us who are loyal and true to our Emperor, the Son of Heaven.  We will need good fortune, all of us, if the kingdom is to survive intact, and I pray none of us will have cause to regret our decisions today.
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."
~ Ulpian, c. 530 CE

Ryven

First the dreadful news of the Emperor and now the untimely demise of Chancellor Ru.  It was clear that the court was quickly dividing if only beneath the guise of the everyday actions held in the palace, but those with a keen eye could see that things had changed.  Something was coming, and each of them were a part of it.  Now was a time for actions instead of diplomacy or procedure.

His eyes swept the court, glancing at each one as their votes trickled in slowly.  Only two suspects seemed to be emerging out of them, and Ryven had to wonder why those two had been chosen.  There must have been some reason.  Perhaps the Emperor believes one of them to be the culprit or maybe Chancellor Ru had left some clue behind in the shambles of his room.

"I can see no other option right now, so my vote will sit with Kurzyk."  He said before gesturing to a servant who scurried over to his table to provide fresh tea.  As the liquid filled his cup, he glanced up at  the rather strained smiling face of the nameless girl pouring the tea, and suddenly he thought of the Emperor.  Ryven pushed the cup away, losing his appetite for the beverage...or perhaps saving himself from being the next victim.

Imogen

Imogen flicked her fan and glanced towards Kyrsa. "I cannot agree." She said solemnly. "One of us had to cast the first vote and I am humbled by Xandi's courage to be that person." She closed her fan and turned her eyes towards Kurzyk. "I do not wish to vote based on so little information, but I shall not be a coward where others are brave. My vote too goes to Kurzyk. May fate be kind to us all."

Remiel

Quote
All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him.
- Sun Tzu, the Art of War

Remiel listened to the accusations being tossed back and forth, and sighed outwardly at the terribly unfortunate turn of events.  For much of his life, he had idolized General Wei; he had studied long and hard to emulate his character and his tactics.   That was, of course, before his hero had indicated his intention to overthrow the blessed Emperor, the Son of Heaven, and seize the Middle Kingdom for himself.  As much as Remiel emulated General Wei, he could not stand idly by and condone such an unconscionable betrayal.   Though it broke his heart to do so, he was forced to take up arms against his hero.  Still, secretly, he still held out hope that the General and his followers could be redeemed, that they could be persuaded away from their foolish course of action.

He put down his copy of Sun Tzu's teachings, looked carefully around at the assembled councillors, and said:

"Kurzyk or Xandi --
They may both be innocent.
But Xandi it is."

Kurzyk

#19
Stepping forward he stood in the middle of the court, his crimson robes reflecting the distinguished service and years of balance among chaos. With kind eyes and a mustache that extended to below his chin, his voice echoed softly but steady in the great hall.

"I understand in this time of panic, the need to rush; the desire to cast blame so we may sleep well in our beds this night. But let us not be hasty and rather look at the events of this day that marks so heavily on our hearts. Chancellor Ru was no ordinary man, but a skilled sword master. From the state of his final resting place, he did not submit without a fight. This suggests with certainty that there was more than one attacker... more than one among us."

He stayed silent for a moment, for the words to digest. A skilled orator, waxing eloquence was a second trade to him only to breathing.

"Xandi's innocence or treachory may or may not be known. I suspect her yes, as some of you do. But what is of greater concern, is with the exception of a few of you, how quickly all the rest lined up to sentence me."

He looked around the room.

"As there are more than one attacker, would it not suggest that they would all vote at once, in haste to execute one of us?"

With a heavy sigh he looked at the Emperor's throne. "I have lived my life in service of the Emperor, and so will I die for the good of balance in the kingdom. If my innocence in death serves you my esteemed colleagues. Then I resign my fate to it."

aymelekT

Ayme watched the verbal battle below her with a troubled frown, her dark eyes darting to each combatant as they spoke out against Kurzyk, then Xandi.  She leaned on the balcony rail, propping her chin on one hand.  At a lull in the vocal sparring, she cleared her throat quietly, the sound travelling.  As one by one their heads turned to look up, she stood straighter, clasping her hands over the rail. She moved her troubled gaze back to Kurzyk and spoke quietly, shaking her head slowly

May I be forgiven for my error if I'm wrong, but forgiveness isn't in any of our hands.  Kurzyk, while you speak with a honeyed tongue, so very passionate...My vote goes to you.

Caeli

The Emperor's team of assassins, themselves members of the Imperial Court leading one life of service openly and the other secretly, listened and noted the arguments of both factions. Without solid orders or instructions from the Emperor, the Wolves of the Wind followed the guidance of Minister Hong, who had served the court longest, and whose loyalty was unwaveringly towards the preservation of order.

The Imperial Court quickly divided into two unequal halves - one staunchly against Minister Kurzyk, the other against Minister Xandi. It didn't take long for the Wolves of the Wind to note the discomfort of many of the officials as they chose one among themselves to put on the chopping block.

They were simple but ruthless in their work. After the noon meal, many members of the Court returned to their rooms to rest away the afternoon heat; Minister Kurzyk took his daily walk in the gardens alone, wanting to be alone with his thoughts. His body was found slumped over his tea, a knife buried in his back - the Wolves were quick in their work.

But they uncharacteristically left a calling card. Around Kurzyk's neck was a beautiful green jade pendant carved with a dragon and phoenix - and on the table, cracked into several pieces, was a tiger in red jade, showing that Minister Kurzyk had, indeed, been as innocent as he'd claimed: a Courtier and loyal member of the Imperial Court.

Ryven

Upon seeing the unmistakable jade pendant as well as the broken fragments of the tiger, it was clear that he had made a dreadful mistake.  By following the others who had been so adamant about Minister Kurzyk's supposed treachery, he had sent a fellow courtier to his death.

"Forgive me, Kurzyk.  I carry the weight of your death until I find my own.  May you find peace."  Ryven spoke softly.

Beguile's Mistress

"Farewell, my friend."  Beguile bowed her head and beseeched the gods to guide the slain counselor's spirit to a place of peace.

This second death of an innocent weighed heavily on Beguile.  Treachery is an evil thing, she knew, and incites more evil doings.  The woman then turned and, maintaining a stoic expression, slowly made her way to the court.  Her concern now was that in her haste to accuse another Xandi may have inadvertently cast herself in the role of traitor.  It was possible that the votes were cast against two whose loyalty should have been unquestioned.

Mithlomwen

Her head bowed in sorry, Mithlomwen said a silent prayer that both Kurzyk and the powers that be forgive her for her mistake.  "I am sorry."  She said softly, moving to stand by the window and stare out unseeingly at the scenery below.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Autumn Sativus

"I'm sorry that we couldn't save you, Kurzyk." she whispered quietly from the balcony. As she felt her eyes well up with tears, she turned to her room, allowing her the privacy and quiet that she wished to mourn the death of a friend.

Imogen

Imogen bowed her head. "Kurzyk, you were a noble man and we have been blinded. Whether by random fate or treacherous intent shall remain to be seen. Rest in honor, Lord, and know you death will not have been in vain." She retreated and walked down the path towards the Lotus garden where she knelt by the pond and offered a floating candle to help Kurzyk's soul find its way home.

LadySky

Pain and sadness made her chest ache as she stared unseeingly at Minister Kurzyk's slain body. Living at court one learned quickly to accept death but no matter how much she saw she could not ever grow accustomed. Desire to live in peace on the countryside burned within her but she knew that until the true spies were located she had to remain and do her duty.

Hanging her head LadySky retreated to her private rooms, a long night of reflection ahead of her.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

Blaed

He looked over what has happened. He could do nothing more but look down at his feet. The vote had made a mistake and killed one of the people trying to better this country. He looked around to see the faces of the people, looking for someone that seemed different, looking for the spies.

"I am sorry Kurzyk. These are hard times, and I will remember your sacrifice. I will find out who the spies are, and make sure your death is added to there list of crimes."

Remiel

Quote"Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys.
Look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death!"
- Sun Tzu, the Art of War

Remiel donned appropriate attire of mourning in honor of Councilor Kurzyk, who had been a trusted and loyal servant of the Empire.  Although the Wolves had acted on the will of the Council, they had nevertheless spilled innocent blood, and thus suffered a stain on their souls.  As, too, did those who voted to condemn him.   At least Kurzyk was being buried in the traditional fashion, as appropriate to a dutiful and honorable soldier.  As the priests chanted their prayers to lift his spirit to Heaven, and as the mourners wailed,  Remiel quietly said:

"Kurzyk has fallen.
The sun will hide its visage.
A cold wind now blows."

Kye

After saying a small prayer over the loss of Kurzyk, a loyal companion, Kyrsa retreated for the night.  She used her time to contemplate the direction they were taking.  The blindness of the court surprised and shocked her to the core, and she was no exception.  She prayed that they would all learn from this mistake, that Kurzyk’s death would have some meaning in the nights to come.

Autumn52

Afraid to show her face at Kurzyk's memorial service Xandi waited until all had floated their candles before she went to float a candle for the loss of Kurzyk. Blaming herself she despaired at what had happened.

Tears streaming down her face she realized that there really was no way of knowing who the Wei Spies were. The distress this brought to her was immeasurable. She prayed that before her death at least she could help take out some of the spies, it was the least she could do in the name of Kurzyk.

aymelekT

Ayme watched the procession on the water, her emerald gaze troubled, a frown marring her pale features.  She'd thought for sure she knew it was Kurzyk but now...

if it wasn't Kurzyk...then who?  She thought as her eyes grew unfocused, her vision turned inward.  She crossed her arms in front of her as though catching a chill and wobbled slightly, then looked out at the assembly, gauging their reactions to the death.

Though unease and tension were thick at the Court, sleep was not something that could be avoided, as dusk fell and the stars came out in the sky. The innocent courtiers of the Imperial Court could only blame themselves for their mistake; and they hoped that, with Kurzyk gone, the Wei spies might lay low for a few days before striking again.

Unfortunately, the next morning dawned with another servant's horrified wail. Everyone clustered around one of rooms in the Palace, holding their breaths as doctors and servants slipped in and out. Finally, though, four imperial guards emerged with Beguile's Mistress.

It seemed that the Wei spies, far from wishing to lay low, had decided that time was of the essence, and had struck again.

Blaed

As soon as he heard about the death of another one of the Courtier's, he knew that the Wei spies are on the move.

He remember who she had voted for the day before, and even if there was many other people in that vote with her, it could still mean something. Sitting in his chair, he spot up to the court.

"Yesterdays vote killed one of our own people. But in the end, he knew that his death was needed, a unfortunate but needed action. But today let me be the first to cast a vote. I am voting for Xandi. My thoughts about how quick she was to give her vote yesterday, have only gotten stronger with the death of  Beguile's Mistress. Yesterday she voted for Xandi, and today she is dead."

Ryven

After hearing of Beguile's untimely death, it only reinforced the deep feeling he had already felt.  A great divide had separated the court, and now actions were picking up where words had failed.  Given Kurzyk's death before, which he had had a part in bringing about, Ryven thought it best to cast his vote away from the others as to give him time to think and not succumb to the pressure of the pack.  The last thing they needed was a second wrongful death.

"Imogen." He simply said before tending his robe.

LadySky

Once again she sat silent by the pond, praying for her thoughts to settle so that she could make a better choice.

"After the pain of yesterday I cannot agree to vote for Xandi. I believe both she and Kurzyk were innocent, votes were all to easily placed on them both with too much haste. I cast my vote for Kyrsa and await a better choice to come along. Jumping on one victim swiftly will not aid us this day." after speaking she sat silent once again, pondering over the various choices and trying to recall whom she had suspected and whom she might be able to trust.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

Kye

Her eyes red from a long night with little sleep Kyrsa rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying to ease the ache that was more in her heart than her head.  She took a moment to glance at everyone, thinking long about all she had learned and what others had said.

"My vote yesterday was too hasty, many of the votes yesterday were.  I no longer believe that Xandi is working against this court.  I pray that my vote will not condemn another innocent to Kurzyk's fate.  For now my vote lies with Imogen,"

Valerian

"Sadly, we have very little choice but to be hasty," Val said, sadly.  "The Wei Spies act with speed, and force us to do so as well, before we have a chance to learn anything, or even take the time to mourn those we have lost.  We must hope that good fortune will help guide us through these dark times.  For now, I can only guess that LadySky may be one of the guilty ones, and hope that today we will all choose better."
"To live honorably, to harm no one, to give to each his due."
~ Ulpian, c. 530 CE

Autumn Sativus

Saffron stepped forward a little, listening to the different opinions of the people. She pondered it over for several moments, before nodding along with Valerian. "We have lost two, already, and I too am suspicious of LadySky. Kurzyk and Beguile were both friends of mine, and I wish to see those who are the cause of our despair pay for what they have done to our innocent friends. They have torn up our community, and this is not acceptable to me. I only pray for the day that we can live together as friends again."

Imogen

"Beguile deserved a better fate than this horrible death by treachery." Imogen tapped her fan against her right hand and closed it. She sighed and shook her head at Kyrsa. "Although I strive for perfection, I am loyal and fair, but I do have flaws." She confessed. "I am a bit upset with your sudden turning towards me. It is true I spoke up against your choice of lady Xandi and pointed out your reasoning was thin."

"At least you have reconsidered and we agree on the innocence of one; For that I am grateful. But I cannot help but wonder if your accusations are random or guided by wicked intent, Lady Kyrsa."

Autumn52

I am afraid to speak in the court today. I was so wrong about Kyrzyk, and I still am confused by the events of yesterday. I hope that my choice today is more accurate. I think that I will try and vote my conscience, I find it hard to believe that FallenAngelNajdan is innocent especially since he seems so sure that I am guilty, even after so many were convinced that I am not.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Mithlomwen

Mithlomwen had to wonder which ones among them could be guilty of such treachery.  She glanced around the room, still so uncertain as to who could be the culprits.  With a heavy sigh, and a heavy heart she pointed her finger toward Lady Sky and could only hope that this time another innocent was not lost.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Stattick

#43
Stattick stumbles in, looking disheveled, and obviously still in the same black with red trim Han Fu as the previous day. His hair is uncombed, and his eyes are red and watery. A faint smell of plum wine lingers to him.

He unceremoniously plops down next to a scribe, and asks how the voting and mood of the court is, this miserable day. Getting his answer, he says aloud to the empty space between everyone, "Kurzyk, I hope you can forgive me. I know that I said that I was unsure of your guilt, but my vote helped to put you in an early grave. I don't know if you can enjoy it where you are, but I left half a bottle of wine at your grave...

"As to the rest of us. Well then... I suppose we must do what we must do. I'm half a mind to walk away from this whole mess, but I'm sure that it would find me dead if I tried. I still don't know which of you, my old friends, to trust or to name traitor." He looks hard at Xandi, but seems to see something in her countenance, and he just shakes his head. "I don't know."

He looks around again, trying to size each of his fellow courtesans up with drunken, watery eyes. "I suppose I will throw my lot in with those that think that LadySky might have something to do with this."

He looks down, not waiting for any reactions. From out of his sleeves, he produces a flask, and two small wine cups. He fills both cups, and then passes one to the young scribe. "Here you go. When your mustache grows long and gray, you can tell your children's children of the time you drank with dead man who still walked..."

LadySky

LadySky mutters softly as she sits quietly listening by the fountain, "I tell you this now. Voting for me is a mistake. Do not throw away yet another innocent. No proof can be offered but I beseach you, do not make this mistake."

With that said she remains silent.

aymelekT

Aymelek staggers in, dressed in clean clothes but looking quite the worse for weear.  She reached up self consciously to pat her hair and blushed, glancing over to see Stattick in far worse shape than she was.  Glancing over at the scribe, she noted the voting, then glanced around, her dark jade gaze pausing at each member of the assembly. Slumping to sit near Stattick, she looks at him cautiously and sniffs, wrinkling her nose.

"Oh Stattick, what on earth is that you're dirnking; it smells horrid!"

She waves the air in front of her and sighs, lowering her head in a moment of prayer for those gone before.  Looking up again, she bites her bottom lip and looks around again.

"LadySkyseems to have garnered a lot of malevolent feelings from others of the court; I cannot help but agree with them.  My vote goes to her"

Aymelek looked at the woman, then down, clasping her hands on her lap, her gaze drifting out a large window.

Remiel

QuoteFighting with a large army under your command is nowise different from fighting with a small one: it is merely a question of instituting signs and signals.
- Sun Tzu

Remiel stroked his beard thoughtfully as he considered the other courtiers.  Among them were the spies of General Wei; but who were they?  It was too early to tell; at this point, he had no real suspicions.

Pouring his tea, he looked up and said:

"Sky claims innocence.
I believe she tells the truth.
Xandi seems guilty."

LadySky

After Iejir had spoken LadySky rose and silently made her way to the scribe. "Please change my vote to Xandi, in an effort to save my life I make this change for I know of my innocence and can count on that. Xandi's innocence however I do not know of." With her choice made she returned once more to the pond and awaited her fate, her chin held high and eyes flashing both fear and determination.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

Mithlomwen

Mithlomwen listened to the arguments going back and forth between everyone as to the guilt of Lady Sky and Xandi.  She wrestled with her own emotions, not knowing who to believe or not believe.  There was a nagging feeling of doubt as to the innocence of Xandi, and Lady Sky's protests did not fall on deaf ears.  She was wracked with guilt thinking that if she voted for Lady Sky she would be sending yet another innocent to their death.

Standing up she looked around sadly and nodded to those that had argued in favor of Xandi's guilt.  "I am going to change my vote.  The arguments against Xandi make me feel as though I am wrong to vote for Lady Sky's guilt."  She sat back down and prayed that she hadn't made the wrong choice.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Kye

Growing more and more worried and agitated by the changes in vote Kyrsa paces back and forth as she thinks.  She was almost completely certain in her heart that Xandi was innocent, and yet she was watching the votes stack up against her.  "I truly believe that Xandi is innocent, I can only hope that changing my vote does not condemn an innocent person to death.  I change my vote to LadySky."

Autumn52

As it seems my death is coming closer I will change my vote to someone I believe to be innocent in and effort to save myself. Please forgive me LadySky

Ryven

"With all this vote changing, I'm thinking maybe both of you have something to hide.  I change my vote to Xandi.  Let us see if fate favors one or the other of you."  Ryven said after watching the debate.

Imogen

Imogen raised her gaze to Kyrsa and nodded pensively. "I shall change my vote as well." She sighed and turned her gaze to LadySky. "I am not at all convinced of Xandi's guilt, LadySky, but it seems I must choose between the two of you."

She folded her hands in the long sleeves of her embroidered robe. "May the wolves tear you apart if you are proven guilty, LadySky but your pleas sounded sincere. That took courage and perseverence. I shall change my vote to Xandi."

Imogen sank into a low chair and rubbed her eyes. "I do not know who to believe. Both the Lady Sky and Xandi presented me with strong pleas, although neither offered proof." She opened her fan and waved herself some fresh air before her gaze sought Xandi. "I shall trust you for now, Xandi. But I cannot condemn LadySky after heeding her pleas. LadySky

LadySky sighed, "What is truly sad is that in all likelyhood both Xandi and I are innocent of being Wei spies. Imogen you should know that with the vote being tied everyone will be forced to vote again, choosing between Xandi and myself. You will be forced to make a choice between she and I no matter what. I ask you to please change your vote once more and vote for Xandi. Honestly, I believe she is innocent but I cannot prove that in any way. I do however KNOW of my innocence and thus ask for you to spare my life." after speaking she again sat silent and waiting, her eyes filled with sadness as she watched what was most surely going to be another victory for the Wei spies.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

Ryven

"I change my vote back to Imogen."  He said, eying Xandi warily.

Mithlomwen

As confused as ever now, with all of the changing of votes going on, she was terrified that perhaps BOTH Xandi and Lady Sky were innocent.  Feeling very much like Imogen at the current moment.  Both ladies had presented very convincing arguments in regards to their innocence.  Leaning back in her chair and rubbing her temples in confusion she changed her vote yet again, siding with Imogen and voting for Kyrsa instead.
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

LadySky

Hearing the various changes once more LadySky rises and approaches the scribe. She calls out to all who can hear, her voice shaking but determined.

"It is fairly obvious from the way the voting has occurred today that both Xandi and I are innocent. Wei spies have successfully ripped attention away from themselves and directed it toward us. If you are an innocent I ask you to change your vote once again, let us vote for neither Xandi nor myself but another who may very well have spent this day praying for our demise. I change my vote to Kyrsa. I may be wrong about Xandi's innocence it is true, however I would rather die with a clear conscious than not."

After the scribe had once again changed her choice LadySky marched back to her spot by the rippling waters, hope flashing in her dark eyes even as she prepared for death.
I dreamed a dreamed, life has killed the dream I dreamed. So....I dream a NEW DREAM!!! never let them see you cry.

I'm so confused. I don't know what to think at this point. But LadySky and Xandi both putting aside their feud to vote for Kyrsa? I'm thinking that someone figured something out... Well, hoping for it really. I'm not sure that I'm doing the right thing here, maybe I'm just getting wrapped up in the sway of the crowd. But I think I'll switch to Kyrsa as well, and pray that I'm not making a terrible mistake.
O/O   A/A

Autumn52

As all have their own opinion as to how guilty or not guilty the three of us who have votes now are. I wish for any loyalist to know something, in case of my death.

When I die either today or later on, as a victim of the Wolves or the Wind or the Wei Spies, please remember what I have said here today. There have been three people who have been adamant about my guilt, some of whom I have tried to reason with.  I do not know if Kyrsa is a spy but I know I am not. I believe LadySky is not. So do with us what you feel is right. Now those who have voted against me may not be spies but we will find out one day. The spies are not above sacrificing one of their own to keep their guilty hidden so please vote with you conscience and the knowledge of what I have said here.

Kyrsa hangs her head for a moment and gathers her thoughts.  "Please, I beg you all. I am a loyal member of this court.  I can speak for no one besides myself, and you must judge my words and honesty as you see fit.  I still feel that Xandi is innocent, but that is neither here nor there.  Do what you must, but please do not condemn me to this fate and weaken our cause."

Autumn52

Xandi feeling a strong tug in her stomach that Kyrsa is telling the truth can't in all good concience condemn her to death. I believe you Kyrsa I think perhaps the spies have us all so confused we are seeing spies everywhere. I am going to vote now for one who I believe to be guilty. Iejir

Please any loyalist let us not fall into the trap the spies have laid for us. They are sitting back laughing at the way we have turned on each other. We must come together and begin to eliminate the spies with due speed. I am sure some of us will die in the meantime but there is no need to help them, by calling down the Wolves of the Wind upon our own loyalist.

When the Wolves of the Wind reported to Minister Hong after the morning meal, they were divided on the two who had had fingers pointed at them in the greatest numbers - Minister LadySky, who had served the Emperor as long and as faithfully as her parents, and their parents before them; or Minister Kyrsa, a scholar whose high performance in the jinshi examination at her then-young age had earned her notice, and increasingly important positions within the Court as the years passed.

Of the other officials, Xandi had been implicated again, though it was clear that her words had obviously swayed some within the court to keep herself alive for one more day. Hearing the confusing and convoluted events of the morning, Minister Hong finally made the difficult choice between the two esteemed women and sent out one of the best to eliminate the next target.

When the courtiers gathered for the afternoon bureaucratic meetings, another was missing. Dreading what they would find, a servant and guards were sent to the missing scholar-official's room.

Minister LadySky was slumped over her desk, a brush still in her hand from the note she had been in the process of writing. Another pendant of green jade signalled that the Court had, unfortunately, selected another innocent courtier as a target of the Wolves of the Wind.

The court slept even more uneasily than the night last, especially as suspicion and finger-pointing had elevated during the evening meal. Snapped retorts and snipped comments that were barely civil were pointedly said around bites of roasted duck and steamed vegetables; even wine lost its rich taste when you were accused of murder.

Like the previous two nights, the Wei spies made their way to their intended victim's rooms, this time without the benefit of a clouded sky. It was to their misfortune that they met the Dragon General waiting for them! Having taken the arguments of the day into consideration, the Dragon General had decided to melt into the shadows around the targeted official's rooms and see if the spies would really come.

Valerian's skill in close-combat and sword-dueling were unmatched, but she was fighting a losing battle against a disadvantage in numbers. After some difficulty, General Valerian was killed in a desperate move by the three Wei spies.

But they, too, did not escape unscathed. Valerian's last wound to aymelekT, one of the Wei spies, had left the minister with a gaping wound that wouldn't stop bleeding. So while the loyal officials had lost a valuable ally, they were one step closer to eliminating the danger within their midst.

First LadySky who, Imogen felt, should never have been thrown to the wolves, and then Valerian who had given her life in such a heroic manner that Imogen felt a pang of admiration as she lit the small candle and pushed it afloat. Gently it drifted towards the other lights floating upon the still surface of the Lotus Pond. There was a candle for each of the fallen, even the traitor Aymelek had received a light to guide her way.

In the quiet of morning, she meditated at the edge of the pool and thought of the night's events. Aymelek had proven to be traitor, and she had voted the poor LadySky to her death. Then again, so had Valerian and she had been been proven valorous beyond measure. Quietly, she turned her thoughts to the other two responsible for LadySky's demise, Kyrsa and Saffron. Remembering the words of a friend, Imogen nodded to herself. "I think that Saffron 's actions have given cause for concern."

Remiel

QuoteIf asked how to cope with a great host of the enemy in orderly array and on the point of marching to the attack, I should say: "Begin by seizing something which your opponent holds dear; then he will be amenable to your will." Rapidity is the essence of war: take advantage of the enemy's unreadiness, make your way by unexpected routes, and attack unguarded spots.
- Sun Tzu

Minister Remiel folded his hands together, the sleeves of his hanfu meeting in perfect form, while he observed the sombre ceremony honoring the brave death of the Dragon General Valerian.  Truly, her loss was a great blow to the court; however, in her last valiant act, she had given them all a vital clue as to the identities of the spies.

Xandi may have been innocent, but aymelekT had never voted for her; instead, she had voted for Kurzyk on night 1 and Ladysky on night 2. He mused aloud:

"A coincidence?
aymelekT guarded Xandi.
Stattick did as well."

Autumn Sativus

LadySky had presented herself in a manner that made her seem that she had something to hide. There were four so far that Saffron had felt this way about, and they had all been wrong about LadySky, leaving her with three to be suspicious of. "I only have a hunch, but I believe that one of those we may place the blame on is Kyrsa."

She then turned to Imogen. "You can vote for me. You can feel free to kill me for a death I had nothing to do with. I am simply a Courtier, and at least in my death I would know that you didn't manage to take one of our more important Ministers from us."

Mithlomwen

Mith felt a surge of pride that the Valerian had manage to take down one of the Wei spies despite being killed in the process.  But unfortunately two innocents had died at the hands of the traitors.  Glancing around it was hard to imagine who the culprits might be.  She listened carefully to the arguments of the others and tried to discern who the traitors in their midst might be.

When all was said and done, all of the change in votes,  Lady Sky had still ended up dead.  She was as confused as ever, still not knowing who to vote for.   She still had a hunch that Kyrsa might be to blame for these as she had only managed to escape death by chance.  "I shall cast my vote for Kyrsa and pray that I am not voting wrongly."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Autumn52

Xandi growing tired of Remiel's constant attacks finally rose and spoke.

It is odd to me Remiel that since the beginning, since the very beginning you have chosen to implicate me and any who did not side with you. I spoke in the beginning of a role I have to fulfill, I will now expose that role and how I have used it. I am the Minister of the Treasury and the first day I found out that Beguile was a loyalist. I made my position know to her and she was murdered. She was against me and I thought if I could convince her to support me that perhaps it would sway some of the others to help in the fight against the spies. The vote changed in my favor and she did not have to expose her loyalty to me at that time which was to bad because she was murdered that night.

It seems odd that you Remiel keep on this trail like a dog on a bone. Even after I said I had a roll, even after I exposed myself to the court you did not falter. I wonder if that is because you know I speak the truth and know with me out of the way you will have one less loyalist to contend with.

Yes I believe that you Remiel, are a spy, but as I have no proof, I will not vote to have you killed. I will instead use my vote this time to try a have someone I think I do have a little more evidence against. Iejir seems to have made a few mistakes in dealing with me.

As far as anyone supporting me, well I think it is strange that you would suggest that anyone is supporting me. A lot of people changed their votes, why would you single out one? Unless it is because you know he is innocent.

Valerian's sacrifice was one of valor and honor. I refuse to mar her memory with another loyalist death. I have completely exposed myself in this court today, now let us see where the chips may fall shall we.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

White Light be upon you if that is your wish

Remiel

Remiel listened to Xandi's protestations.  If her words were true, then it would mean that his instincts were completely mistaken.  Furthermore, if she was, in fact, telling the truth, she almost certainly would now become a target for the spies of Wei.  And if she were lying, she would be found out soon enough.  Either way, by making the admission, she had almost certainly sounded her own death knell.

Head bowing in shame, he said:

"I do believe you--
Has my logic now failed me?
Iejir it is, then."

Kye

With her head bowed she listened to Xandi, listened to her speak her own doom, which was now the next thing to inevitable.  "We have lost many of our own, and I hope that yours will not be the next Xandi, I pray that others will listen to you and vote to kill one of the Wei Spies this night."

With a low bow towards Xandi she said, "So be it, my vote stands with you against Iejir."

Stattick

Stattick, wearing clean clothes, and freshly groomed, stares long and hard at the pond, where the candles for the dead burn. He had not yet burned any for those that had fallen thus far, but now his candles have joined the others. Pale, and deep in mourning for those that have passed, he doesn't try to surpress his tears, but neither does he wail out.

"I don't know who to vote for," he murmurs. "But I am considering things carefully."

I've agonized over this, but I've come to a decision. I have to vote for Xandi this time. Think on this for a moment. She's always the one pointing fingers. She always gets a bunch of people to follow along with her. And then we kill another innocent. Everyone that the spies have killed is someone that's voted against her in the past. It's obvious. She's been masterfully playing us all against each other all along. She's a spy.

Or, you know, there is a possibility that she isn't a spy. Instead, she's just the one that's running around and getting innocents killed. And declaring that she has a role in an open thread. And PMing all over the place (I've been watching her in the Who's Online thread)... and even talking about other people's roles, at least to me. And maybe to others as well, based on the sheer volume of PM's I've seen her sending out. And she's been stirring up more chaos then any three other participants combined. Was she accidentally responsible for Valerian's death as well? She's either a spy intentionally, or she's such a bad gossip and gadfly, that she's might as well be a spy.

There is strong case for her being a spy. There is an equally strong case for her being a detriment to us if she isn't. Either way, spy or not, I think she's just too dangerous to live. This is the first thing I've been sure of. So, please join me in ridding ourselves of this troublemaker.

Imogen

Imogen fell silent after Saffron's words, carefully considering their merit. The vehemence in the young lady's words spoke for her and Imogen found herself swayed, casting more than one dubious glance at Kyrsa. "If your heart is pure, Saffron, then I wish you nothing but prosperity and a long life. It is true that Lady Kyrsa might be the guilty one, I shall give you the benefit of doubt and throw my vote with yours for now."

Xandi fell silent listening to Stattick until she finally said, "I will speak only one more time, I beg of you to vote against me. I know this is unorthodox but think of this, once I am proven to be who I say I am, you all can consider who has spoken against me. Their is other reasons a person sends a PM besides this counsel. I have nothing to hide except my shame in believing someone to be honest and trustworthy who is not. So again I beg of you to kill me, vote against me. I can no longer stand the sight of the people who supposedly are my friends who speak such vial things against me.  I beg of all of you to cast your votes against me, I have nothing to hide. I think I would prefer to die by the hands of this court than by the hands of the spies.

In disgust Xandi looked at Stattick and said, "For someone who has been watching my movements so closely instead of trying to find out who the spies are you certainly expose what you are. If not a spy, then a person I besiege everyone to be careful around. He is not trustworthy. I will not change my vote for I am not sure if Stattick is a spy. What is one more day to allow Kyrsa to live? Not that I value her life above any other, I however want to be vindicated in my death."

One more thing perhaps this councel would be interested to know that it was Stattick who contacted me first, not the other way around.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

Well then. For everyone else's benefit, this is what you told me via PM. You PMed Iejir, asking him to change his vote against you. Then you watched him on the Who's Online thread (thank you, actually it hadn't occurred to me before then to watch our player's activity there). He sent out a PM, but not to you. Then he logged off. Later, he logged back on, but still didn't respond to your PM. That's all I know of the dealing between the two of you. However, it's a spurious reason to believe him guilty, unless there is other evidence. And if there is, you've had more then enough time to explain it, or to point it out.

However, I've been watching, like I said. You've been awfully busy...

Furthermore, I can point to the chaos that you've wrought. It's plain to see. You've spoken to me about others. I won't name them here in this thread, in case some of them are important to our defense. If they are truly important to our defense, then you shouldn't have revealed them to me. I did not ask you about them - I did not ask for your secrets, or anyone else's. Or you could be a spy, and you're trying to direct my attention away from your co-conspirators.

Now, maybe I'm reading things into this that I shouldn't. Maybe I'm the only one that you've been revealing things to. If that's the case, then you'll have to accept my apology for speaking my mind, and doing the best job that I know how to, to protect those of us that are loyal. I'm not changing my vote though. You're a spy, a gossip spreading secrets, or both. I don't even dislike you - there's no malice here, although I cannot fault you for feeling betrayed... because I did betray you, in a sense, with this post, and my previous one. But I can't sit idly, and hold to implied promises of loyalty when my rational mind tells me that you are jeopardizing us. If you're a spy, it would be shear folly not to vote against you. If you're not, I can't help but feel that you're a big factor in why we're getting the smack down so hard.

As to the fact that I contacted you first, via PM, you're absolutely correct, I did. I will not deny it. If you want to recall, I happened to catch the post where you claimed that you had a special role, within minutes of you posting. And what did I say? I PMed and warned you that you were painting a target on yourself, and that you should immediately go and edit that out of your post before any of the spies saw it. But you left it... and strangely enough, it seems to have protected you from the loyalists, while the spies have also let you live.

After Minister Kyrsa revealed herself, the Wolves of the Wind discreetly slipped out to confer with Minister Hong. It was perilous to trust mere words; how did they know that this was simply a plot to rid the Court of yet another supporter of the Emperor?

But the Wolves of the Wind knew what the will of the Court was, so after making the decision, the two best among them slipped out again, this time en route for Minister Iejir's study.

He was there, as his usual, seemingly unaffected by the clear suspicion against him by the Court. He glanced up, seeing his two visitors; a smile showed that he hadn't a clue that they were not there for a friendly visit.

When his body was found right before the afternoon meal, it was no jade pendant hanging from his bruised neck, but an amulet of red jade, carved with the likeness of a tiger on its face. It seemed that Kyrsa had at least known the truth: Minister Iejir had, indeed, been a Wei spy.

The next victim of the Wei spies was predicted long before the night came. The minister in question ate alone that night, making a toast of good wine to herself before feasting on all of her favorite dishes. She finished writing out the documents that had been unfinished since this turmoil had begun, and neatened up her study and her rooms.

When the remaining Wei spy came that night, Kyrsa, the Minister of the Royal Archives, bowed.

In the morning, the unease was palpable; there were few allies who would be able to help Emperor Zhang's supporters, now.

Xandi almost afraid to speak gathered her courage and finally broke the silence that had fallen on the court.  She said, "In honor of the sacrifice so many have made, Kyrsa and Valerian, I will not stay silent any longer. I spoke first once before and my life was nearly cut short but I can not think of that now, not in these perilous times. We are so close to ridding ourselves of the Spies. Please I beg of you, any who are loyal, vote with me now and end this rebellion.

It is my belief that the remaining spy has been very clever. So clever in fact that 'she' had kept herself away from any suspicion until now. Saffron knew she could change her vote in the last round, because without a Dragon General to protect her, Kyrsa was an easy target over the night. Kyrsa knew this too and still sacrificed her life.

Lets rid ourselves of this spy and be done with it shall we? Vote Saffron.

Xandi lowered her head, walking to the river and floating a candle for yet another loyalist who had given her life bravely to save Emperor Zhang and his supporters.

Imogen returned from the sad task that had become a daily routine since the murders had started. The candles glowed softly, afloat between the sacred purple flowers. She had folded her hands in her long sleeves and bowed her head to Xandi. "I have listened to your counsel before, Xandi, and have yet to regret doing so. Stattick blushes a little when his eyes catch Xandi, and he glances down. "I... I believe I was mistaken about you. I'm sorry, but I was only trying to ferret out the traitors, same as you. I will vote with you against Saffron. I pray that you're right about her."

He glances up, briefly, before bowing as one would to an equal, and then walks to the pond. At the pond, he produces a candle for Iejir. He speaks quietly, "We were friends. We were enemies. We were united in our desire for a strong empire, yet divided in our goal. I will mourn for you. And I will hate you for causing... this." Stattick waves vaguely at the bickering courtiers at his last word, lights the candle, and then sets it adrift.

He returns to the others then, to sit and watch, and listen. He refuses food, but not wine, and he perhaps drinks too much, in obvious melancholy spirits.

With a heavy sigh, Mith bowed her head sadly.  "I shall trust the judgment of others and vote for Saffron as well.  I can only pray that we are right."

Autumn Sativus

Friends, at least those of you who are... before I die I will leave you with my suspicions of Xandi and Stattick as those who are disloyal. I wish you luck in pushing out the spies as they have been responsible for not only my death but everyone who has given their lives. Do not believe their lies.

Blaed

After thinking much about who was a spy, and who voted with them, I have come up with a few problems. A few people that are still in our court have sided with the spies before.

So, my vote is going to have to go with.... Xandi. I am sorry, but my thoughts will not clear until I act on them.

Ryven

"Do not think that you have evaded suspicion, FallenAngelNajdan.  If I recall correctly, you were one of the few who still voted for the later Minister Kyrsa after she had come forward.  That seems quite odd to me."

Caeli

It was clear from the start that Minister Xandi's early accusation had set the tone for the remaining members of the imperial court. Suspicious eyes followed Minister Saffron as she strode through the imperial compound, proclaiming her innocence - but without a strong supporter, and with so many fingers pointed against her, Saffron found herself unable to do anything but leave some last words amidst the surviving officials.

She almost seemed to expect it when she heard a knock to her door, and was surprised instead to see two servants instead of two frightening assassins. She was seated in the receiving hall of her room, calmly sipping a cup of tea; and, preoccupied, she didn't think anything of the pot of tea that the servants replaced before they left again.

Death came quickly; the poisonous, tasteless powder that had been dissolved in her favorite strong brew of tea leaves was nothing if not swift. But alas, Minister Saffron was only a courtier who had only loyalty in her heart. The green jade pendant clasped in her hand was the only calling card of the Wolves of the Wind, who grieved at yet another innocent's death.

Though the loyalists had struck a heavy blow only two days ago when two Wei spies had been caught out and eliminated, it didn't seem as though the remaining courtiers had any idea who the last Wei spy might be; and to make it worse, nobody knew who was masquerading as a courtier, but was in actuality one of the royal twins. Neither had revealed themselves as of yet, and nobody knew if their battle was silent, or being fought in secret.

Regardless, the days looked to be numbered for the innocent members of the Court. In the morning, Remiel was found in the armory, a bloodied sword still loosely held in one of his fists. He had tried to fight back, but unfortunately, he had lost.

Stattick

The next day, Stattick lit another candle, this time for the loyal Remiel. He spoke quietly to the departed spirit of better times that they had spent together, and set the candle adrift on the pond, another soul lost to the strife in the court. He returned to the court, and quickly drank some wine to give him courage for what he wanted to say.

"I am afraid we have lost another loyal friend last night... and obviously, there is still a spy in our midst. With no evidence in hand, we must choose another of our members, by supposition and intuition, and pray that we choose better today then yesturday.

"I cannot get Ryven's words from last night out of my head, and think that he might have been on to something. I too think that it's suspicious that FallenAngelNajdan voted for Kyrsa after she revealed herself."

FallenAngelNajden

Xandi afraid to speak just placed her vote, written out, in a stack with the other official votes.
May light guide you through your turmoil and may darkness never cross your path.

White Light be upon you if that is your wish

Imogen

Imogen meditated on the small terrace overlooking the Lotus Pond and thought of how its dark, mysterious surface resembled the starry sky with all the light adrift between the flowers. She folded her hands in her lap and thought of the fallen and living alike. Too many had died to treacherous hands; but they had found several of the guilty and justice had been served. And still the danger was not past.Speculating in silence, Imogen remained seated by the pool until the sound of voices drifted across the water. She rose and crossed the wooden bridge towards the speakers, folding her hands in the long, draped sleeves.

"I agree." She said quietly. "It was suspicious, but... " Imogen hesitated and looked at the many glittering lights, quiet testimony of their former errors. She mustered her courage and took a deep breath. "I'm not too sure the guilty would have drawn that kind of attention. Yet...." She mused, "it would have gone unnoticed if not for Ryven." Her eyes flitted to the main house and she bowed her head. "Stil, I wonder if the last traitor isn't rather someone quiet and careful not to draw attention. I have always considered Mithlomwen a clever and resourceful woman. Her silence in these past nights worries me."

Mithlomwen

Mithlomwen regarded Imogen thoughtfully and bowed her head respectfully.  "I can assure you my good lady that it is not I that is the traitor amongst us, a fact that will be proven to all of you ."  She said quietly.  "I shall place my vote on FallenAngelNajden."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Ryven

"I shall also place my vote on FallenAngelNajdan"

Blaed

As the votes started to come in, he started to become saddened.

"I see that my voting as of late has made people think that I am one of the spies. But if you remember, I have voted for one of the spies in the past. If that does not show that I am not one of the spies, try and remember all my voting, and who I did vote for. You will see that I have voted on my own accord and not with the people that we have come to see as spies.

"Stattick has my vote. If my death does nothing more then show that I am not a spy, then so be it. But my blood will be on your hands, and I will curse you all of killing me."

Ryven

"If I recall correctly, you never voted for either of the deceased spies at all.  In fact, one of the previous days, you voted with Iejir who we know to be a Wei spy.  I'm afraid you look no less suspicious to me."

"That same vote that you speak of, Remiel voted with us, are you saying that he is a Wei spy as well? Because your proof that you have that shows me as a spy is very weak. But I have no fear of dieing to prove that I am not a Wei spy."

He looked around at all the people in the court right now.

"But, if you want to use voting with the spies that have been revealed, then you must be a Wei spy as well. In the first vote, that put Kurzyk to death, you vote along side aymelekT and Iejir, both of the spies that we have found. So, what do you have to say to that?"

Ryven

"It was the first vote, and no one knew the information that we know now.  You'll notice later that I began to vote with Kyrsa who we know not to be a Wei spy, yet you continue to blatantly go against this information."

Imogen

Imogen shook her head as the words shot back and forth and dipped a light bow towards Mithlomwen in apology. "I know it makes no difference, but I believe you and wish to show this by changing my vote to FallenAngelNajdan."

"It was the first vote, but, I did not vote with the two known spies. And your "facts" that I am a spy was that I voted once with a known spy. It just seems that your wanting to see what you want to. But that is fine. My life for the Emperor."

"As I leave the court, I want everyone to remember these words. You might not be the one that pushes the blade into my heart, but my blood will be on your hands. Don't think that you can wash clean of this act. How many of our people that were not spies have you put to death? I have never been in the winning vote, so I don't have any blood on my hands. Just remember that."

He leaves the court, and goes to await his fate.

Ryven

Ryven laughed loudly before calling out as FallenAngelNajdan left the room.  "Only one, and I've already said I would carry their blood on my hands until I am dead.  We shall see your true allegiance soon enough."

Caeli

As FallenAngelNajdan paced his room later that afternoon, waiting for the Wolves of the Wind to come for him, an unexpected visitor came, armed with a pot of tea and two cups. Unsure of why someone who had clearly been siding against him wished to chat politics while he was waiting for his death, FallenAngelNajdan reluctantly stepped aside and allowed her in.

The courtier left, and he was left alone again. Not long after he had begun writing some poetry on a fresh scroll, one of the Wolves of the Wind entered. FallenAngelNajdan stiffened, but he stood, unwilling but ready to assume the fate that his fellow courtiers had given him.

But at that very moment, Mithlomwen stepped into the room. FallenAngelNajdan, surprised to see her after their earlier conversation, could do nothing but stare. She, however, wasted no time in pulling out a pendant of the darkest green jade, carved with a
kilin - a unicorn that symbolized longevity for a royal child - and showing it to the Wolf of the Wind, who was utterly in shock at the interruption. She smiled serenely, waiting for the man to kneel at her feet and greet her.

"This man is an innocent member of the Imperial Court," she proclaimed. "There will be no more innocent deaths - at least, not this day."

The setback didn't discourage the lone Wei spy from the spree of killings the three of them had begun. That night, careful to avoid the pathway that passed by Mithlomwen's room, the last Wei spy carefully slipped into another of the rooms along the corridor.

The next morning, it was Minister Xandi whose body was cold and still.

The numbers of loyalists had decreased by one yet again, and it was becoming unclear as to whether they would be able to eliminate the last of the Tiger General's supporters from the imperial court.

Imogen

That evening was the first in many that Imogen did not light a candle before her nightly meditations. She sat at the pool's edge and smiled pensively at its tranquil surface. Today had brought no sorrow, but joy. Not only had a loyal courtier been rescued, the rightful heir to the throne had revealed herself. Thinking that now, at last, she knew who to trust Imogen rose to rest for the night, praying to the small altar inside her chambers that she might live through this night. The morning brought sad news, as Imogen had come to respect Xandi's judgement and she postponed her visit to Mithlomwen to dedicate a candle to the brave Minister.

After performing the sad task, Imogen went in search of the Princess. She bowed and folded her hands within her sleeves. "Your highness, within this court there are few that I can safely trust. You have proven without doubt the honesty of Minister FallenAngelNajdan, and your own status is beyond question. I have my suspicions as to the rat hiding in our midst, but I would value your opinion."

Mithlomwen

Later that evening when everyone had convened again, Mithlomwen looked around, her gaze fixing itself on Stattick.  "I have had my suspicions of you for quite some time now.  I believe you are yet another one of the traitors among us."
Baby, it's all I know,
that your half of the flesh and blood that makes me whole...

Ryven

Blaed

He walked back into the court, and after last night, he thought that he would never see it again. He looked around, and just about wept at just how many people of the court have been claimed by this spy conflict. Even if they got them now, the spies would still have won, having weakened them past repair.

"I will have to say, that in light of what has been said and looking back, I still have my thought about Ryven being a spy. But, that could be just because he was the main person that started the vote that would have killed me. I will put off my thoughts of that until later. But right now I am going to vote for Stattick because that is one that I have a clear head about.

Stattick

Stattick burned a candle for Xandi at the pond before coming to court.

Once in the court, and having heard how nearly everyone had voted for him in his absense, Stattick merely nodds. "I am not the remaining spy. I'm just a simple courtier... but I cannot condemn you for voting for me, if that's your desire. I will put what I believe to be my final vote on who I do think is the spy, Ryven. When the night has passed, and the spy strikes again, remember what I said today."

Stattick then sits with those that have condemned him, and says, "If I'm to be executed by your orders tonight, let us have one final meal together then..." Stattick raises his glass of wine and offers a toast, "Let us drink to our friends, companions, and fellows that we worked so closely with for all these years, those that are still with us, and those who have recently departed. Let us drink also to the health of the Empire."

Imogen

There was a rough decision made today, and Imogen paced the gardens restlessly. There was no doubt in her mind who the traitors were, but would they claim a last victim before their final demise? Stattick was guilty as sin, that was beyond question. But the question was not if he was guilty, the question was.. what was he able to do. Would his death bring the much desired peace? Or would Ryven be the one secretly laughing and sharpening his blade for a final strike? Who was the assassin? She had believed it to be Stattick, but Ryven's vote made it all too easy... It made her look at the two again and, a deep sigh upon her lips, she stepped forward. "Stattick, I declare you a traitor to the empire, but I am not sure I believe you capable of stabbing in the dark. You are simply not quiet enough to pull something like that off." Her eyes turned to Ryven. "Therefor, Ryven, to ensure that no one else shall die, my vote shall go to you."

Caeli

#124
With the opinion split yet again, the Wolves slipped out of the banquet hall one by one, meeting up again with Minister Hong to make another hard decision. If they killed wrongly, even in the name of the empire, it would almost surely mean the end of the dynasty, and mark General Wei's successful usurpation of the throne.

But the will of the remaining ministers had been clear; many of them were sure of Stattick's guilt. So, later that afternoon, when Minister Stattick was alone in the Royal Archives (for now unattended but for a single guard at the entrance, since Minister Kyrsa's untimely death), the Wolves of the Wind again swept in, did their work, and left, leaving his body to be found by the guards.

However, it seemed that the nightmare that had begun only a scant week before was now ended - for Minister Stattick had been a Wei spy. A search of his rooms after the discovery of his death (with the red pendant that marked his guilt prominent over his chest) turned up a small bottle that, upon inspection, turned out to be an antidote for the poison that had been given to the Emperor. Thankfully, it seemed not to have been too late; after a night of supervision, the imperial doctors pronounced the emperor weak, but on the road to recovery.

With her last ally eliminated by the Wolves of the Wind, the traitorous Lady Imogen disappeared from the imperial palace before she could be found out by the Wolves of Wind, and to inform General Wei that he no longer had any support in the capital - all of them were dead, or had long since left. There would be no coup d'état from within; any efforts to overthrow Emperor Zhang would be another story to tell, it seemed.

Story Recap

Day 1
During the close voting, Xandi, the Minister of the Treasury, bribes a eunuch to find Beguile's Mistress' role.
Kurzyk is chosen for elimination by the rest of the Court, after a close vote between he and Xandi.
Valerian, the Dragon General, chooses to protect Xandi.
Kyrsa, the Minister of the Royal Archives, researches Xandi, revealing that she is not a Wei spy.
Beguile's Mistress is killed during the night by the Wei spies.

Day 2
Valerian and Saffron contact each other, trying to guess out the traitors.
LadySky sends out a plea to many of the players, trying to get the vote changed.
Xandi contacts several players, including all of the Wei spies and the traitor twin, pleading innocence and claiming a special role.
Xandi openly claims a special role in the game, as does Kyrsa, resulting in more vote changes.
Stattick and Imogen manage to convince Xandi of their 'innocence'.
After some heavy debate and vote-changing, votes between LadySky and Kyrsa are tied; LadySky loses by a roll of die.
Valerian chooses to protect Kyrsa, after examining the fallout of the votes.
Kyrsa spies out Iejir; he is revealed to be guilty.
The Wei spies elect to choose Kyrsa as their victim.
Due to the Dragon General's special ability, aymelekT, a Wei spy, is killed during the ensuing struggle, as is Valerian.

Day 3
Kyrsa is openly targeted by early votes. She contacts several players, including Imogen and Stattick, hinting at a special role.
She then claims openly to be the Minister of the Royal Archives, and reveals Iejir's guilt.
Remiel contacts Xandi, attempting to form a pool of information.
Enough votes are swayed that Iejir ends up being eliminated, leaving only Stattick (spy) and Imogen (royal twin) as the remaining guilty parties.
Without a protector, Kyrsa is targeted during the night by the remaining Wei spy.

Day 4
Xandi's early accusation leads to a strong following of votes against Saffron.
Saffron is eliminated by the Wolves of the Wind.
Remiel is targeted by the Wei spy and the traitor twin during the night.
At this point of the game, there are four loyal courtiers vs. two traitor characters.

Day 5
An overwhelming vote threatens the life of FallenAngelNajdan, led by Stattick and Xandi.
Mithlomwen, the Loyal Twin, uses her special ability and saves FallenAngelNajdan, revealing their innocence.
After discussing their options, the Wei spy decides to do away with Xandi.
At this point of the game, there are three loyal courtiers vs. two traitor characters.
One more death of a loyal courtier would effectively end the game, with a victory for the traitors.

Day 6
The choice is mainly between Ryven and Stattick; the remaining loyal courtiers elect to vote for Stattick.
With only the Traitor Twin (Imogen) remaining, the Tiger General's supporters lose, as the Traitor twin does not have the special ability of eliminating players during the night segment.
The loyal courtiers of the Zhang Dynasty win, with three players remaining!
