Survival of the Fittest
A Zombie Apocalypse Game

The world is different now. The buzzing hum of progress and capitalism, religion and politics, has been silenced. Cities are little more than ghost towns, falling to ruin after going dark in the absence of the lights that once shone bright enough to block out the stars. Civilization itself is nothing more than a fading memory. Fame and fortune mean nothing now that life as we knew it has ground to a halt. The best and the brightest of humanity aren't the beautiful ones, or the ones with the most money, or juiciest scandal. Not even the star athletes, the rocket scientists, the soldiers, political leaders, Saints, or any of the numerous people we used to worship can claim that title anymore. No, the best this world has to offer now are the extraordinarily ordinary. Death covers the face of the Earth, showing no prejudice and claiming every continent with equal fervor. Only, unlike in the old days--you know, the bright and shiny ones still trapped in our memories that haunt us--well now the dead don't stay dead, and living must do all they can to survive.

How it All Started
That's the thing, no one seems to know where the point of origin was for this... disease. Most can't even remember hearing anything about it on the news. At least not until it was already too late and even if they had they likely thought it to be some joke. That is until they were watching their friends and loved ones lunge for them with vacant eyes and hungry mouths. The first casualties swept up in the rising tide of death likely weren't even made public and by the time the media caught wind of it the world was already doomed. There was no stopping it. We knew too little and it moved too fast. The only thing left for those of us who escaped the first wave was to run. To hide. To survive.

What We Know
1. You die, you turn. There are no exceptions. Doesn't matter if you're attacked, if you trip and fall on your weapon, or if you go peacefully in your sleep. You die, you become one of them.
2. With a biter the brain is the danger. Stop it, stop the biter. However, if you can't do that then destroy the mouth and get rid of the hands. If they can't bite you or rip you apart then you'll likely get away. Their aim isn't to kill or to reproduce, they aren't human anymore. Their aim is simply to consume and your demise is merely incidental.
3. The biters aren't smart. They're drawn by sound and movement, some say scent too. They tend to move in straight lines directly toward their prey so they can be stopped (or at least slowed) by obstacles easily enough... so long as those obstacles remain standing.
4. A bite won't turn you instantly. Depends on the severity but generally those who get bit get sick first. Sometimes its nothing, a tiny nick and you continue on to fight another day. Other times... well, other times the ones that get bitten or get the blood in an open wound, they get feverish. They start to bleed until they drown in their own blood and then... well then they become like the rest of the dead.
5. There is no cure. Nothing can save you from becoming one of those things, 'cept a bullet.

What this game is: If you've seen the Walking Dead then you've got a pretty good idea of the type of game I am after. This is an RP where fear is a near constant and survival is paramount. Set 6 months after the initial outbreak, the game will focus on the survivors and their struggle to come to terms with what has happened while also trying to figure out how to move forward, and their interpersonal relationships along the way. Not everyone necessarily needs to be in one large group. You may start alone, in pairs, or smaller groups then at some point come upon others. You may choose to join up, or keep moving separately. Circumstances may force you to team up at times and drive you apart at others. Killing zombies will happen but character development is just as, if not more, important. Ultimately the game will be what the players and the characters make it to be.

What this game is not: Resident Evil (no matter that I actually like the movies). There will be no mutations, no crazy advancements, no hidden underground group still tampering with things behind the scenes and ultimately no super big bad evil villain for the characters to defeat that will result in a sudden happily ever after type ending. The zombies and the characters themselves are the enemy. >:)

Rules and Guidelines

~Adhere to all Elliquiy rules!
~Shouldn't need to be said but... No god-modding. Just don't do it.
~We are all adults here, disagreements may occur but please conduct yourself in accordance with your age and general standards of civility. Respect your fellow players and take any issues to PM to work it out. If needed you may include the GM(s) but once a ruling is made, that's it.
~This game will be placed in the Extreme section. Non-consensual activity is permitted, however, players are NOT required to participate. Any non-con activities MUST be approved by all players involved. Anyone who violates this rule will be dropped from the game.
~Please respect player/character ons and offs.
~No Canon characters. I realize this is a genre that's been done a lot but please don't submit a sheet for Rick from the Walking Dead, or Rain from Resident Evil. Original Characters only.
~Do not try and create an ultimate character of unlimited skill and knowledge, it's just silly.
~No PC deaths without player and GM approval. (Let me know if you are wanting your character to perish, you will be able to make another if you'd like.)
~These rules are subject to change at the GM's discretion.

Character Sheets

~Players will be allowed up to TWO characters to start with. (It is possible that more may be allowed at a later time.)
~Characters must be human. No supernatural creatures, no magic, no advanced/future tech, no aliens, etc. 100% human.
~Purely Antagonistic characters will not be accepted. Negative personality traits that lead to conflict are fine by me. Deliberately trying to set yourself up as a big bad villain, not okay.
~Characters may be submitted here or via PM.
~Connections to other characters are encouraged! The game is not starting at Day 1 of the outbreak so its very possible people could have come across each other before, have been traveling together for some time, or possibly even know each other from a time before all hell broke loose. Siblings or other relatives, and even couples are also permitted.
~Be creative! This is your character, make someone you will have fun with. Do not worry about what you think the game/group 'needs' or try to be diverse for the sake of diversity itself. Play what YOU want to play.
~Keep in mind there are consequences for IC actions. If you make a character who starts carving people up like a serial killer to feed the zombies... well, you may find your character in hot water sooner rather than later >.>
~Have fun!

ATTENTION: We are currently not accepting any more full on soldiers regardless of military branch.

Bloodied Porcelain

I want no ordinary lover. I want a storm. I want sleepless nights and endless conversations at four a.m. I want passion, I want madness.
I want someone who's able to make my whole body shiver from a distance and also pull me close to make sense of all my bones.

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

Name:  Victor "El Cucuy" Loera
Age: 43
Profession:  Former Drug Lord, Ex-Convict
Skills:
Machinist - Learned in the Penitentiary
Cheese maker, Cow wrangler/cowboy - His youth
Diplomacy - Strong Arm/prison diplomacy
Bloody hands - Kills with no regret or hesitation
Macgyver (Prison) Ingenuity - Need a stove out of some alcohol and a  soda can? A shank, jerry rig traps or doors to keep out walkers and or other humans.
Steady hand/mind - Doesn't lose his nerve or cool in hectic/dire situations

Personality:  Shotcaller (Natural born leadership), Decisive, Stubborn, Religious, Ambitious

The weak do not survive in life nor in prison, a lesson that has forged him to survive in the zombie apocalypse. Despite all that, he is not a bottom feeding scoundrel despite his appearance. Victor can come of stubborn and intimidating, but he does not prey on the weak, enough of those type are sadly out in the world. He is not a man of many words, he is hard to get a conversation out of, but he does not shy away from social interaction.

Weapons:
36 inch Crowbar
Swiss Army knife
Police Baton
Motorcycle armored riding gloves - Protective gear

Weaknesses: Losing his newly acquired freedom, his past/history catching up to him

Fears:  Roaming the earth as a walker.
Never enjoying a cold beer and a cigar ever again
Dying with no legacy
Living with no purpose or meaning
Never knowing what happened to his family back home

History:  The story of Victor Loera would have been a short one if he would have lived a life in the backwoods pueblo (small village) in the mountains of Sinaloa, Mexico. Victor's family had cattle and made cheese from their milk to sell, but barely scraped by to feed his six other siblings and various other family members living in their small home. He wanted more and found that opportunity working as a errand boy for a local man with connections to the Sinaloa Cartel. He was a teenager, working for pocket change, eventually learning to keep guard of drugs or helping make delivers via horseback. It was a long climb but in time he was running the small village. His parents hesitantly took his money but their need overpowered their moral conscious.

Victor continued to work, making more money, in time transporting large shipments of Cocaine via Semi trucks all the way to the Mexico- Texas border. He caught the attention of the higher ups when he dispatched rivals without a second thought. The reputation of "El Cucuy" began to spread. El Cucuy in Mexican folktales, is the equivalent of the boogieman to children. Children had no reason to fear him, it was the rivals and enemies of the cartel needed to worry. Victor washed the streets of Tijuana, Tecate (California Border) and El Paso (Texas) with blood but he never killed a lawman nor "innocent".

When he began working in the US (after acquiring a Visa) for the cartel, the DEA began to build a case against him. The DEA was unable to link him to any murders, but they had enough trafficking and distribution charges to lock him away for life. They tried to make him rat, but he simply smiled and told them to fuck themselves. The cartel kept in touch as best they could, supporting him in prison by keeping his books well funded but that was all they could do.

Victor began his stint in the Penn in the late 90's, accepting his new life and quickly rose to a position of power and respect in the prison. Like any prison he spent his time working out, acquired an education and even learning the English Language fully. As he earned more rights, he began to work in a machinist shop to pass the time.

Then the outbreak occurred...

Just as life was stabilizing for Victor, it went to shit. The guards tried to keep order, but those foolish enough to stay were overpowered and killed. Many died, not by the outbreak, but at the hands of other prisoners as survival of the fittest ruled. When the bodies began to rise, the remaining prisoners grouped up and killed the very people they had just killed. More were infected and turned, by the time they  learned to put them down, over 90% of the population was dead or fled.

Over the next three years, supplies were gambled, stolen or fought over. News of the outside world was as grim as living in the prison. Small groups in the prison began to raid and pillage nearby, even bringing in children and woman for vile things. Victor has seen enough, in an act of mercy he killed three "fuck toys" before killing their captors, fleeing the prison shortly after.

Victor wandered, living off what he could find but had little experience in actual hunting. When he met Skye, he finally found someone to travel with, he just had to save her first... (Subject to change)

I've got no issues with the concept. Should be fun to see how he does in a group now.

Fix up his new sheet and I'll look it over and give final approval ^^

Sexuality : Heterosexual
Sexual On's and Offs : Rough Around the Edges, its been a while. Not a passionate lover sort, at least at first glance. He has been locked away and surviving has thrown some serious salt in his game.

Player : Aiden

Bloodied Porcelain

Full Name : Skye Caitlyn Macrae
Nicknames / Aliases :
Age : 16
Sex : Female
Marital Status : Single

Former Occupation/Position : Student, all-around country girl
Strengths :
  • Hunting Basics – Decent shot with her compound bow, basic tracking skills.
  • Varied Survival Knowledge – Though most of these she only knows from a theory perspective and few she has actually had a chance to apply to real-world scenarios. This includes such things as knowledge of wild plants, how to tie various knots, etc.
  • Game Cook – Growing up in a family of avid hunters taught Skye the fine arts of skinning, dressing, and cooking wild game of all kind.
  • Basic Agriculture – Growing up on a small farm has left her with basic knowledge of how to plant and care for plants and animals found on the average farm.
  • Seamstress – Waste not, want not… Skye learned how to sew her own clothes and how to mend those pieces of clothing that were in need of it.
  • Building and Repairing with Hand Tools – Growing up on a farm meant Skye knows her way around a tool box and is good with her hands (though not as good as some others may be, as she was often too busy caring for the house to be able to help with building and repairs around the farm)
  • Fit – Skye has always lived an active lifestyle, contrary to the common American teenager. This has left her with a fit, athletic build and more stamina than most people.
Weaknesses :
  • Pacifist – There was a time when this trait might have been considered a good thing, but since the world went to shit… not so much.
  • Inexperienced – She was only fifteen when the end of the world happened, and that meant being introduced to a world of terrifying experiences without any life experience to help her figure out what to do.
  • Indecisive – Skye would much rather let other people make the decisions, and constantly second guesses her own when she’s left to her own devices.
  • Nightmares – Vivid and terrifying nightmares mean Skye often has to do without sleep even when it’s readily available. There are ways to soothe this, but she has yet to find them.
  • Easily Intimidated – Her run ins with people – especially men – has done little to help Skye learn not to fear other people. This can result in her not trusting someone when she should.
  • Thin – Food since the outbreak has been scarce, leaving Skye undernourished.  Though her ability to hunt has kept her in better condition than most, she’s still not at her best.
Special Gear :
  • Bowie Knife – Given to her by her grandfather just before he died.
  • Compound Hunting Bow – Also given to her by her grandfather when he died, the bow has ten arrows left and is not as worn as most others one might find in the hands of a survivor. Her skills with this weapon are not as advanced as some, but she is competent. Her biggest weakness with the bow is that it is intended for someone with more upper body strength than she has, so she finds using it for long periods or having to draw it back too often in a short period of time tiring.

Height : 5’0”
Weight / Body type : 105 lb
Hair : Long, red
Skin : Fair with a slight tan
Eyes : Grey-blue
Distinguishing Features :

Personality : Quiet and withdrawn, Skye is far more shy than one would expect from people in this world. She seems content (or perhaps determined) to keep her head down and avoid notice whenever possible, something that is difficult at best for a beautiful young woman. Skittish around men, she is less than trusting even of those who have given her no reason to doubt them. There are few things that Skye wants more from life than a family, but her lack of trust of others makes that possibility distinctly unlikely.

In spite of all of this, however, she is a hard worker and unafraid to get her hands dirty with more menial tasks such as hunting, fishing, scavenging, and even such things as building and repairing things whenever she can.

Likes : Music, hunting, hot baths/showers, sweet iced tea, dancing, singing, playing guitar
Dislikes : Overly religious anything, bullies, beets
Fears : Getting close to someone only to lose them again, seeing people fall to each other and not to walkers, being raped

History :
Born to a fifth generation farmer, Skye grew up surrounded by animals and plants and was expected to pitch in when and where she could. The death of her mother when Skye was only eight meant that she was left to be the only female on the farm and the care of the house was left largely in her young hands. Though she still picked up on the basics of caring for the animals and plants on the farm, her duties were primarily shifted to more traditionally feminine roles… She learned to prepare game and fish for cooking, to cook, to sew and mend clothes, and basic first aid skills necessary to keep her somewhat accident-prone brothers from losing limbs to minor injuries.

Though her father ran the farm, he was involved in a partnership with his father, who helped out on the farm with the help of Skye’s two brothers. Her grandfather was a highly traditional man and deeply religious, which colored his view of the world in a way that few people in modern days had. This view of the world created several sore-spots in Skye’s life and relationship with the old man… spots that she tried her best to avoid bringing up because in spite of what she saw as his ignorance and closed mindedness, she loved the old man.

Even before Skye was born, her grandfather was convinced the end of the world was coming – and soon. He had a fall out bunker built on their property when he was still young, and spent the years leading up to the eventual apocalypse stocking it with supplies enough to last a few years with a handful of people, or longer with less. So when the dead began to rise, Skye’s family lasted in their house as long as they could, keeping the farm running in whatever capacity they could manage without the use of their tractors and combines (luxuries they could no longer afford if they wanted to save gas for more important things like generators and vehicles) before moving in to the fallout shelter and locking themselves in.

There they stayed for six months before their little slice of safety was ripped from them in the form of other survivors. They found the bunker, broke in, and all hell broke loose. They attempted to fight off their attackers, but the men were vicious and brutal in ways that the Macrae family was not prepared for. By the time it was over, Skye’s family was dead and she was in the hands of less than gentle strangers.

The men gathered what supplies they could and Skye found herself being dragged away from the bodies of her family by a man who carried her grandfather’s crossbow. During the walk to the prison a few miles away, Skye endured cruel verbal abuse as the men told her all about what her life would be like from that day on. By the time they reached the prison, she was certain she would die within those stone walls.

Before they entered, her captors decided they would “get first crack” at her, and Skye soon found herself struggling and screaming against the men who had kidnapped her. In the commotion, she managed to grab her grandfather’s bowie knife, which had been on the man above her’s belt. The blade was waved wildly before it finally sank in to his thigh, and Skye soon after found herself dazed and in pain as he punched her, sending her falling backward.

That was when it happened. Screaming. Blood everywhere. Someone growling in a way that didn’t even sound human… and one word being shouted at her: “Run!”. And run she did. Taking only a moment to look back at who her savior was, she watched as an older man dispatched of the ones who had kidnapped her before she disappeared in to the tree line and hid.

That same night, she found him… sitting beside a small camp fire with her knife beside him, attempting to establish a steady pull and aim with the bow. She didn’t want to approach him… was terrified of making contact with another survivor… but she was hungry… and that was her bow. Luckily for her… he was hungry too, being a piss-poor hunter, and the two struck an unspoken agreement. Since then, Victor has been keeping her safe, and Skye has been keeping him fed while teaching him what she can about survival in the wild.

Quick question: Are we a group that has survived together for these six months? Or are we going to be meeting for the first time in the opening of the game?
Like what you see? I am currently looking for new plots!

Oberon

I'd like to submit this character for consideration:

Marcus Derham

Full Name : Marcus Derham
Nicknames / Aliases : Max
Age : 47
Sex : Male
Marital Status : Widower

Former Occupation/Position : Emergency physician
Strengths :

- Is a doctor with extensive experience in trauma care.
- Keeps his cool in the face of gore/injuries/blood.
- Has good people skills and can be an accomplished diplomat.
- Great cook, can make something edible out of nearly anything.
- Smart without being a know-it-all.

Weaknesses :

- Violence didn't factor into his world until after the pandemic. He is not skilled in any form of combat or weapons use.
- Still suffers psychologically from the death of his wife, blames himself.
- Tends to want to overthink things, overcautious.
- Has a mild drinking problem. He has it in check most of the time, but he has been know to derail on occasion.

Special Gear :

- Carries a basic trauma kit and medical supplies in his backpack.
- Carries some lightweight cooking gear and spices.
- Has a .38 Colt Detective Special tucked in his jacket inside pocket. He's just proficient enough with it to shoot a biter in the head from two arm lengths away.
- Carries a small chess set.

Height : 6'1"
Weight / Body type : Currently 172lbs. He was slightly overweight when the pandemic started, but the harsh life since has reduced his weight to what one would consider normal for his height. He always did a bit of running so his condition was fair to begin with.
Hair : Black, he likes to keep it very short.
Skin : Chocolate brown
Eyes : Brown
Distinguishing Features : A modest beard (see profile picture), some grey hairs. No scars.

Personality : Marcus is the kind of person that instills confidence and trust in others. He has a calm demeanour and is usually soft spoken although he knows when to raise his voice. When a life is in danger he will instinctively take control of the situation. In other words he is the embodiment of the confident ER doctor. Behind that outward facade however he is a tormented man. The death of his wife and the general helplessness in the face of the outbreak has left deep scars. He struggles with these daily. On occasion they cause him to seek refuge in a bottle, although he tries to keep this hidden from everyone around him.

Likes : playing chess, cooking, reading, running, music
Dislikes : violence, stupidity, religion, fanaticism
Fears : His greatest fear is to lose another patient. Seeing so many people die and not being able to help them as a doctor has been his worst nightmare come true.

History : Marcus used to live a blessed life. Born into a middle class family he sailed through medical school. For nearly two decades he worked as an emergency physician at the Palomar Medical Center. It is there that he also met his wife, Viviane. Although the couple planned on having children, it never quite happened for them. In hindsight he would now probably consider this a blessing. Passionate about his work Marcus was also active in a number of charity organisations and spent almost six months in Haiti after the large earthquake in 2010, working in a field hospital. An experience that would prove pivotal in his survival of what was to come.

When the disease struck the hospital was one of the first places that succumbed to the biters. Marcus and his wife were among the few who were rescued from the horror. The next couple of months they spent in a compound set up by the national guard. As time went on however supplies started to run out and eventually the compound was overrun by biters. It was here that Marcus lost his wife. Not to the disease, but to a stray bullet fired by panicking soldiers. In normal circumstances he might have had a chance at saving her life. But not there. There was no equipment. No medicine. No time. He had to leave her behind. A cursed day that replays in his dreams every single night.

Marcus can't remember much of what happened next. The group he was with got out of the compound in an armoured vehicle. They drove until it finally ran out of juice in the middle of nowhere. Then they walked. And walked. And died. One after the other. Until he was the only one left...

Sexuality : Heterosexual
Sexual On's and Offs : Marcus has always been a pretty vanilla guy when it comes to sex. His only partner has been his former wife and neither of them engaged in any kinky stuff. However, the world isn't as it was before and neither is he. He still has to discover exactly what person kind of he's become.

Koka, consider me interested!

I realize we can start off alone, as a small group or a larger group, but what country/state/area should our characters be in?  I don't want to make an American if the game is happening somewhere in Europe.

Oberon

In my character proposal I had Marcus start out in California, not far from the Mexican border...

I think it's open if you want to start out alone, as a group, etc. For example, Aiden and I are planning to have had our characters together for a little while before the game actually started, but others might start alone.

I don't think she's specified this, so I left mine purposefully vague so I can adjust to put her wherever is best.

BP's got it right.

You have the option of coming in not knowing anyone, or having been with others for whatever length of time you choose. Feel free to plot and plan with other players on this.

The aim is that we're all starting out on the move (in the same general area) and the larger group will come together as part of the RP and decide what to do from there.

I'll be tossing up a few NPCs that will be available for those wanting to add a body to their initial pair or group. And my character will be open to having a few with her as well.

@ Oberon - Marcus looks good. Approved.

Hey Ari ^^

Yeah, setting is the one major thing I'm still trying to decide. It will be set in America, probably the west coast, and I'm aiming for a more rural area located near enough to larger population centers to make it interesting.

I'm very open to suggestion here.

Yay!

I've positioned Marcus as a sole surviver of a previous group, so he's drifting on his own right now. I'd prefer him to run into some company in the first couple of posts though. So if anyone is interested, let me know!

For those looking to join, or someone interested in a second character... I am looking for someone to play my Janelle's fiance. Ideally they would have met when she was in college and he'd be her best friend. To start the game they have gotten separated and don't know if the other is alive, dead, or a zombie. Details such as age, ethnicity, occupation, and all that are open.

Her partial sheet can be found in the second post. Feel free to poke here or via PM if interested and we can hash out some history and details.

I will be sending in a character sheet tonight. I need to alter it to fit the perameters of your character sheet
Be careful who you try to burn. You might just find that the other person knows how to play with fire better than you.

My biggest problem writing up a sheet right now is the whole 6 months after the outbreak.  Did the disease spread slowly or has it been six months of walking dead, needing to fight to live every day, living through hell and still going?

There's a lot someone can learn in 6 months, especially if they're using those skills daily to survive.

It was pretty rapid based on the description, so I'd say six months since the outbreak.

Aiden

I used the Walking Dead as a reference.

If you seen it, Rick woke up a few days after the outbreak and the world was HELL. So I assume it spread hard and fast. I think in that first month, most of the living were taken out. Little to no warning, failed attempts to fight and just horde after horde of undead.

Example- The Prison Victor is from, went through its supplies in 5-6 months and this is AFTER 90% of the population is dead/killed.

So I imagine there is lots of supplies out there, just need to risk an encounter with walkers.

AribethAmkiir

so is it safe to say that most survivors know how to fire a gun, stab a walker in the head, know what to salvage, and set up early warning traps?

In Walking Dead, were they at the farm or the prison 6 months after the outbreak?

Kokaine

The disease spread the way it usually does in these types of things, quickly and violently. The public at large basically had no warning. It depends on where your character was, what sort of supplies they might have had, etc,  but for the most part they'd have been hiding or fighting (either the zombies or other survivors) to stay alive for the majority of the time.

Survivors would likely know how to take down a walker... doesn't mean they're good at it though. They'll likely have some knowledge of what to salvage. Being able to fire a gun is up to the player. For example: My Danika is mildly afraid of guns and that hasn't gone away, nor has she had anyone teach her how to use one. She uses her bats. *shrug*
