So I was just wondering what everyone's dream job would be or what you wanted to be growing up.

I wanted to be a zookeeper growing up and so far I've managed to sorta live out my dreams by being a dog trainer and volunteering at my local human society.

I wanted to be one of those famous artists at one point--someone recognizable instantly like da Vinci or Picasso. While my current job doesn't involve art, it's still a near and dear hobby to my heart.

komurasaki

That's a cool hobby! I suck at drawing anything other than stick people. lol

jouzinka

I wanted to be a princess. ;D Then a shop assistant (as a kid) then a psychologist (for a brief time at college), then a translator (for books, not much into interpreting) later at college, but didn't get to university.

Finally found my calling at 30 years old: makeup artistry. I started my own business and never looked back. I do photoshoots, fashion, runway, weddings, commercial, print and film. Every day is different and I never get bored.

I think every little girl dreams of being a princess at one time or another.

Makeup artistry sounds like a really fun job. Congrats to you for finding and living out your dream job. And it sounds like a really intersting one too!

As a kid I wanted to be a palentologist, lol. But then came math :P. Now I'm a professional costume designer and makeup artist for theatre and film, as well as a professor of both. My main interest in makeup work is special effects, but I also do beauty, corrective, hair and historical styles. I'm a published author, a visual artist and a musician as well. I've also been a licensed massage therapist, I'm a medical herbalist and a certified aromatherapist.

I often say that if I were to go back to school it would be medical school, but I think my dream job at this point would be full time writing, special effects makeup and making art of all kinds.

I don't remember how old I was when I first started wanting to make video games but I suspect it was pretty early on. Especially after playing Final Fantasy Tactics-I had so many ideas I wanted to use to make a sequel and to this day, nothing else has come close to being 'the one' that surpasses it as far as strategy RPGs is concerned.

When I was a kid I wanted to make computer games, then as I got older it got worn down to 'work in IT', by the time I left high school I think I was just happy to have made it to uni. Fortunately I got to work in IT though somehow I can't see any kid saying they want to be an 'integrator, dogsbody and change management policy interpreter' :)

As I got increasingly burned out at high school, I was sorely tempted to switch to something focussing on English literature and poetry and when my job got super-stressful a few years ago I was tempted to chuck it in and get a job teaching English at whatever level (EASL, Primary, Secondary, etc.) but apart from the pay cut there's always that risk of numbing yourself to something you love by making a job out of it.

Really? I thought the sentiment was, "get a job doing something you love and you'll never work a day in your life". I do plan on teaching as a career and the only thing I can think about it being unpleasant is the students not taking it seriously or being unable to follow the material and getting me frustrated about it. I'll still love the subject itself.

First thing I wanted to be when growing up was a comic artist (ironically for an American I wanted to do manga), but I didn't have the talent to draw, I plateaued hard doing it myself, and my first college roommate and growing up basically turned me off of Japanese culture, gave up drawing for writing, which I feel is the only thing I've got any real talent at, wanted to be a novelist, got a degree in English, and now I work at Wal-Mart.

So yeah, that happened. :|
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

As much as I dislike sounding negative, that sentiment is..sentimental :P I think every job has some serious downsides that are unavoidable. Owning your own business where you're doing what you love also involves stressing over bringing in enough income and learning to do your own bookkeeping, being a vet involves being surrounded by animals all day, unfortunately, that also involves having to put down the ones that can't be saved, and so on.

I think it comes down to knowing if you can handle the down sides of the work to the extent that the upsides are still worth it. Also, hats off to wanting to be a teacher, I admire anyone who wants to do something that good. If you haven't already, go check out Taylor Mali's "What Teachers Make" on YouTube :)

My dream job has nothing to do with reality, because I doubt if there even is such a thing.  But if I could have the job of my dreams, I'd be a traveling talent scout for a nationwide chain of strip clubs, catering to both male and female clientele.  I'd get to see so many beautiful naked bodies, and I'm sure some that weren't as well.  But I would probably grow jaded over time and become the Simon Cowell of the profession, sending poor little girls away with their hearts broken because of my rude and insensitive comments.  :P

(Ya call those tits?  The look more like fried eggs to me!)  :-(

Beorning

I've always wanted to be a writer. Especially, a comic book writer.

I think it's the only job I'm qualified for... unfortunately, there's no comic book industry at my country.  :-\

I agree with Aleph. I would also say that that saying pertains to the time you are actually hands on at work - doing the main thing - like, if you love teaching, you will be in your element and enjoying every minute in the classroom. The main body of the work you will love, so it will not feel like work anymore.

The rest still sucks, but as Aleph pointed out, you take it as something that comes with the territory and that good feeling when you actually work will outweigh everything.

I really wanted to be a horticultural engineer and learn to design all sorts of gardens and outdoor areas, study many different plants and trees and how they could co-exist in a setting.

To be a paid writer.
We write in here for fun and stimulation, but most of us are probably not paid.
Imagine being rich enough (James Patterson, Stephen King, JK Rowling) to do what we love to do?
I want to write on the porch of a small house in the Cape or just touching a lake. Unfortunately, I don't have enough cash or confidence to make a full time go of it. There are bills to pay...

I like this topic and your dreaming job, I would like to be famous and have money and help people.

Can wanting to be a Kamen Rider as my dream job count?

TaintedAndDelish

I chose a career path that matched my abilities and that would pay the bills. It was a practical choice, I guess. If I could do anything I wanted and make enough money at it, I think I would want to direct and shoot porn. Seriously, that's gotta be an awesome job. I don't mean boring vanilla porn, but really good kinky, fetishy porn.  ^_^

Nico

I actually have my dream job.

I couldn't imagine doing anything else anymore. My job combines all the things I love. Being creative and dealing with different people.

I am happy and content as it is!

Towards the end of primary school I watched a BBC Horizon documentary about the discovery of the W and Z bosons at CERN and wanted to be a particle physicist, and then came the maths  :o

I 'work to live' as in my primary identity/purpose is not invested in work, that saying I want to enjoy what I do and I do it to the best of my ability.
Scooby: I’m afraid you’ve gone mad with power.
Velma: Of course I have! Have you ever tried going mad without power? It’s boring, no one listens to you.

Smiles I had in the 4th grade a teacher do the whole what do you want to be when you grow up.

My answer cause my teacher to call my mom in for a parent teacher conference. I told her I wanted to be a parapsychologist. She looked at me confused and asked me what that was. I told her is a scientist that studies ghosts and other paranormal stuff. She proceeded to tell me there was no such thing which to my 4th grade mind did not like. (this was also a substitute teacher by the way my regular teacher had to have her gall bladder taken out) She met with my mother and asked her"Why are you letting your daughter read books about ghosts and all those things." My mom made asked her."Why would I not encourage her to read? If it gets her reading I am OK with it." My mom also had to tell the library I was allowed to check out any book I wanted as well but that's another story lol.

Now...my dream job would actually be an IT nerd or librarian. Sort of a far cry from ghost hunter but still.
Some mornings its just not worth chewing through the leather straps.

I started school just as the NES was coming out in America, and Nintendo Power was one of the most exciting reasons to read! :-D Those Game Counselors... Man, that was my dream job! Ha! They'd have those awesome profiles listing their gaming accolades while answering reader questions and giving tips... What job could have been cooler than that?

Well, I also wanted to be a swashbuckling pirate, too! X-D

I like Annisthyrienne's answer above, as a more recent choice. How about escort service mystery-shopper?  8-)

I wanted to be an Architect.
I wanted to be an Author.
I wanted to be a Helicopter Pilot for the Army.
I wanted to be a Train Engineer.

I ended up working at a home improvement store part time. And only for a year.

There were a few different jobs I wanted to do growing up.

Veterinarian, biologist, signwriter, artist and journalist. Then a bit later I wanted to be a scriptwriter.

I didn't become a vet, which is for the best because I'm terribly allergic to a lot of animals now. However, I have kept a lot of different animals as pets, and currently have a pet rabbit.

I didn't study biology after high school. I am a reiki practitioner.

I didn't become a signwriter, but I learned calligraphy as a teenager, and still have a decent grasp of it.

I have become an artist. I got into drawing in my early 20s, but then didn't do much with it for years until I took a web development course a few years ago. I learned to use Photoshop properly, and now I have a lot of images completed, a book I've illustrated (and two more in the works), and a Redbubble store with some of my artwork on it. I've also made web themes for Elliquiy, RPOL (unofficial ones) and Dark and Moody Forums (some had artwork, others were pure CSS). I have a Deviantart gallery but I haven't updated it from a couple of years ago. I also illustrated my web site for my pen name, and have done the same with a few other web sites before.

I did get a degree in journalism, but haven't worked in it a single day in my life. I did start writing my own books, and the degree helped improve my writing, which I've applied on here and other forums where I've written, but it hasn't led to a journalism career. I honestly don't feel like it's the path for me anymore, despite my family thinking it's what I should do. I would rather write science fiction/fantasy.

As for scriptwriting, I have written one or two. I submitted one when I was about 18 to a tv studio, but it got returned to me because they didn't accept unsolicited scripts. I edited a friend's, who put on a theatre show out in Texas. I haven't really done any script writing apart from that since high school, but I haven't really had much connection with the theatre/entertainment scene, so I haven't got into it that much.
