All I can say about the weapons is, maybe, it all depends on if I want to tweak it before the game begins.  As it stands now, the system revolves around imagination, more than 'you get bonuses for this, or that.'  It's completely random to, so say your character is wielding a sword, but the damage is extremely low, than obviously the person being hit would write something like, 'the blade managed to nick, but not pierce my character,' obviously it would be written better.  But if your character attacked with their fist, and the damage inflicted was extremely high, than the person being hit would write something like, 'the opponents fist collided with so and so's face, the sound of so and so's nose being broken ringing in so and so's ears.  Shock from the attack cause so and so to stagger back, tripping over a root, and falling backwards, where so and so's head collides with a rock, causing so and so's vision to blur, and the ringing in their ears to intensify,' you see where I'm coming from?  I want you all to get creative with hurting your characters, allow them to get banged up, bloody, and close to passing the fudge out.  Hopefully said passing out character will do so in a safe-ish area.

Right, I get that, but it just seems kind of... IDK, unlikely. That's all. I understand what you've laid out, but it sort of undermines the big bloodbath at the cornucopia if there's no reason to go after the best weapons or supplies. It's your game obviously, I just wanted to bring this up, because if there's a BIG time fight, it might get kind of difficult to explain why the Tribute with a bow is getting manhandled by the unarmed Tribute after four or six turns. Ya'know? I'm just wondering for the sake of my strategy, it's not my intention at all to undermine your decisions, just a little clarification is all. I have no strong preference which way things go.

Also, if one were in an alliance that was in trouble, could one person roll an "Escape" for all? Or would each member of the alliance have to roll their own escape?
I've been in a rut lately, but I'm working on catching up. Sorry for any delay.

I think the motivation to go for a weapon is flavor, if you wrote your character out favoring a weapon than why not go for it for that reason alone?  Please do remember though, just because a character has a weapon, doesn't mean he'll inflict a lot of damage.  If he's up against another character with mad grappling skills, or just gets lucky with a rock, than it's completely possible that the armed character can go down, look at David and Goliath for an example.  But I do know what you mean, a weapon would give a character an edge, I'll let you know when something is up regarding a tweaking to the system.

As for rolling an escape for the whole group, I'm going to make a call and say no.  Each person would have to make their own escape rolls.

I personally prefer the "Weapons as Flavor" thing.

Of course that's mainly because I designed my character as an unarmed specialist. Hehe.

Mhm, and for the most part it'll stay that way.  But I'm thinking that I'll give bonus points for using Weapons, they wont be high, on a scale of 1-20, but just enough to throw it in.  I'm thinking it'll look like this, a dagger would give you a +1 to add to your roll, a staff +3, a sword +5, a bow +7, but only for long distance, it would have no bonus points for up close combat. That's not set in stone, but you guys get the gist.

[Edit]  I just wanted to clarify that those will not be the actual bonuses, they're just examples.

How about the character gets a +1 to their roll if they are using a weapon (or technique like martial arts) that is referenced in their character background as a specialty?  Otherwise they get the base roll.  This way you keep the original gameplay but characters who can get something extra out of a weapon will go for them, while those who are confident with bare hands can stay out of it.

I think with a system like this it's better to treat it less like a game and more like a collaborative writing project, the way freeform rp's are.  It comes down to whether this is meant to run like a game or more like a story.  Not saying it can't be both, but the system needs to favor one or the other.

That's a good idea, I'll definitely keep it in mind when looking at the system.

I think that falls more into the category of opinion.  To me, roleplaying is both a game, and collaborative writing.  I am not creating a character for this game, because I'm running it, so it'll play out with you guys writing, with more freedom than you'd get with a full on system game, with me keeping the game on track.  You all have the freedom to take the game where you want, but I'll be there to make sure it doesn't completely disregard what I want/have planned.  I just want to make this clear, the battle system that's in place is just to make sure that characters die; which they will do, there's no getting around that in this game, unless your character happens to be the one that survives.  To be honest, it clears it up for me, since I can't be sure that players will kill off their characters unless there is something cut and dry implemented that would ensure it; in this case, when the characters HP hits zero, death.

I could, in all honesty take out the correlation between how much damage is dealt and how it affects a character.  In theory, the points would still tick down, but it wouldn't affect if a character passes out or just get's scraped in a scuffle.

And with that, these are the Tribute character spots still open:

District 1 - 1 Male Tribute spot open.
District 2 - No Tribute spots open.
District 3 - 1 Male Tribute spot open.
District 4 - No Tribute spots open.
District 5 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.
District 6 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.
District 7 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.
District 8 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.
District 9 - 1 Male and 1 Female Tribute spot open.
District 10 - 1 Male Tribute spot open.
District 11 -  No Tribute spots open.
District 12 - 1 Female Tribute spot open.

We have more than enough room for female characters.

undisclosedtoyou

Yes indeed, we would love another character, female or male. :)

Apologies for my scarcity gang. I recently aquired The Old Republic, Skyrim, and Mass Effect 3 almost all at once.

I'm not entirely sure where the last two weeks of my life went, but I can attest to a powerful sense of blissful content whenever I try to recall the specifics...also...kinda sleepy.

I DID finally see the Hunger Games movie so I think I may want to retool my character's background story a bit. Maybe give him a bit more incentive to actually play to win rather than play in the vague hope of somehow luring in a specific peacekeeper. Also perhaps tone down some of the more "out there" aspects of it. But only some. heh.

That is of course assuming I can resist the call of my Lightsaber...

Edit: @ Miyu
Hey my district hasn't got a dame yet. For that matter neither do Discticts 5-9

KnowThySire

I was thinking of getting Old Republic and Skyrim once I got a new computer. How would you say Old Republic is compared to a normal MMO?

DRoux

I tried it on one of the free weekends. The impression I got was that it's still as massive a time-sink as any other MMO, but with a distinct scarcity of the 20 Bear Asses quests that are big focuses in some other MMO's. Some get incorporated as bonus objectives, but they just require kills without collecting items and usually fulfill themselves by the time the main mission is over.

Apologies to all whom I play YIM games with, but my account seems to have locked me out. I'll try to fix that as soon as I can.

Latooni Subota

Well, color me interested for a female spot, after I read through the rules and remind myself of some of the important details XD

KnowThySire

Maybe I'll check it out. When I play MMOs, my main enjoyment comes from partying up with other people. I feel like in the videos of SWtOR I've seen, nobody was really in a party. I hope that it was just the videos that I watched.

TheRedFear

The only MMO I can compare against is City of Heroes/Villains.

Both have something in common I like. You CAN play through the main quest line solo. Moreso in TOR than COH. But there's plenty of missions that will require group play. Being the type who prefers to solo, I can't say how easy or difficult it is to find groups. There's plenty of Guilds though so I imagine joining one would solve the issue of being able to consistantly get into a group. I'm on the Lord Adraas server, which from my research seems to be one of the more popular roleplay servers. Plenty of Roleplaying groups advertising for new members often and i've found that most people are very quick to answer questions for us noobs on the general chat channel. MOST of the time i've requested a party for a particularly tough mission i've found it without much waiting but there have been a few frustrating exceptions. I'd imagine that's true of msot games.

I've only done PVP once and I generally don't care for PVP but I kind of enjoyed it. It was a weird but amusing "Huttball" game where you're randomly assigned to a team to play a deadly combat game fighting back and forth for control of the ball and then running it across to the other team's goal line, for the amusement of the Hutts who are a neutral party in the Republic/Empire war that both factions need to curry favor with.

The biggest draw of course is that every character class has a unique story line, and all missions are fully voice acted. I imagine this might get tiresome if you're the type to do multiple playthroughs, but right now at least I am loving it.

We'd love to have you.  All the must know info can be found in the Elluiki page, there's a link in the first post for it.  And reading the regular wiki page for the book series is always a plus.  The battle system will be tweaked before the game actually starts, but it wont be changed too much.  I do suggest just glancing through the pages here in this thread, because there have been good questions asked and answered, but it's not too necessary.

If you need help figuring out the dice bot just PM me and I'd be more than happy to explain it to you.  Luckily it's super easy, so you shouldn't have any problems learning how to use it.

Lol, i've read it and it looks cool. just a few question:

In general it looks like all characters start out equal, with 500 hp. So does that mean we don't have individual skills or traits that give advantages and disadvantages?

Where does the sex fit in!?:P.

I don't think sex is a major part of this game. Unless you want to risk being shot in the butt while pumping away... :P
