We are looking for MEN!

Anyway! The story!

The RP follows a group of senior High School students who have just started their final year of High School at a prestigious public school named "Malcolm Wheeler High," and are currently on the start of year annual Senior Ski Trip. Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson High School is a large, comprehensive high school that serves the needs of a diverse student body. It has a world famous STEM program that feeds int Caltech and a theater program that has graduated more then it's fair share of stars. It's faculty are all thought leaders in their field of expertise and hail from all corners of the globe. More students graduate and go to top colleges and unversities then any other high school in the area and the financial aid rewards, in aggregate, are the highest as well. The crown jewel of the school district, it is a shining example of successful education in the 21st century.

All characters are either students or staff from Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson High School in New York (state). They've spent at least a year in school together sharing classes, attending school events and living in the same community so even the "Loner" is a known quantity, if only cursorily.  It's mid October and the students are on a school trip to the Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado.  They are, to all intents and purposes, normal teenagers with their own various issues and dramas as per High School norm, and all have their own dreams and hopes for the future, looking to go to university, get an Apprenticeship, go into the family business or even just survive day to day due to their own personal circumstances. You have bookworms and nerds, you have goths and punks and Cheerleaders, you have Jocks and loners and over and underachievers of all stripes and colours. None of them are particularly abnormal by human standards, and none of them really have anything out of the ordinary in their futures....until The Event.TM

Whilst on their Winter Ski Trip, a mysterious earthquake rocks the Resort and, after everybody has been accounted for, life returns to normal...until certain members of the year start manifesting odd, unnatural abilities. They start small...then grow into something powerful, quickly becoming unmanageable if they aren't mastered. Soon after, even weirder things start happening around MWH; Supervillains start crawling out of the woodwork, odd supernatural phenomenons occur with increasing regularity and everything from impromptu musicals to Eldritch Abominations seeking to invade our plane of existence must be thwarted if the cast are to live to see the next "Big Fad" or "Juicy Gossip." This will be a slightly tongue in cheek, lighthearted game...but things can and will get dark at times. It really depends on the players!

At this point in the story, a mysterious hybrid of man and beast has attacked the school during the annual football game, killing or injuring dozens! With the police helpless to deal with it, our heroes gathered together and killed the beast in order to protect themselves and their friends. Later that night, our band of fresh faced heroes rendezvoused in the woods nearby to try and work out where the creature came from, and whether there were any others like it. They followed the tracks deep into the woods near the school to a mysterious clearing, where despite the serene picture of the waterfall-and-pond, there was the strong smell of chemicals. Our heroes managed to discover a secret door leading deep into the bowels of the earth...and right into the destroyed, blasted husk of a secret research station, where twisted beasts and horrific monsters roamed the halls, any humans long since fled...or worse.

Moving through the facility and fighting off these creatures, the team was trapped by a cave-in after a particularly brutal fight with a monstrous creature with the body of a large feline and the wings and head of a bird of prey. Upon its death, they realised that the only way to escape...was to go deeper into the madness. They soon found a way out, but were trapped by a mad scientist and his enigmatic, irreverent underling known only as "Three." Escaping the scientists attempt to transform them into more of the twisted beasts roaming the ruins of the facility, the crew managed to detonate the machine and escape, leaving the fates of the scientist and his assistant ambiguous at best.

Now that they've escaped, they have only more questions; what was that facility? Who built it, and why? Are there more of them out there? Who was that scientist, and who was "Three?" And more importantly...how do they stop them, if they managed to escape?

And here's your chance to join the story as a new character and discover the answers alongside them!

Of course, there are few restrictions on the powers, and will be considered on a Case-By-Case basis. Just bear in mind; this is

A) A DAY ONE game.
B) NOT Marvel or DC. The Power Scale will be FAR lower than that kind of strength level. We are looking at a host of street-level powers that band together to fight threats far more powerful than them. Examples of roughly equivalent heroes include:
- Daredevil (standard, super-senses but no extra bells and whistles Daredevil, akin to the Netflix show)
- Taskmaster: Threatening in his own way, but not about to beat up the Avengers.
- Red Hood: No real powers, but super skilled in his own way. Fights with the Teen Titans, but isn't really Justice League level.
- The Black Knight: Pretty powerful, but nowhere near strong enough for the A-List. At the moment, anyway.

Basically, we want you to choose ONE power theme and focus on it. We will help you balance it properly in the process, but if you come in wanting super strength, flight, speed and laser vision...You'll be told "No" pretty firmly. :P

Now I must stress this: Nobody has experience with their powers. Part of this RP is exploring how these characters discover and react to their abilities, and chronicling how they get experience and what they do with them. Whilst many, many future plotlines are being planned, this is primarily a character driven RP. If you are looking for just mindless fight after random encounter, it is probably best to look elsewhere. Fights and altercations and drama are encouraged, of course, but only if they make sense given the characters.

So! I am looking for a cast of interesting, fleshed out, unique and balanced characters. They don't have to be emotionally or mentally stable - in fact, it is encouraged that they have their own issues, since that makes it interesting - but they do have to be playable and fit into the setting. Sociopaths, Psychotics, Schizophrenics, etc etc are not banned, but MUST be handled with care. Many of these conditions are sensitive issues, and if you do not feel confident in your ability to portray them accurately or sensitively, then please refrain from using them. Additionally, we would prefer to have no social pariahs or loners or people who suffer from social disabilities that prevent them from getting involved. Whilst these people do exist, of course, from a meta point of view they are very difficult to Roleplay in an engaging and interesting way since they - by necessity - cannot easily get involved with proceedings. This is just to make sure that everybody has a way to get involved, and to keep it interesting for you and the other players. Similarly, please no Mary Sue's, Gary Stu's or power-fantasy vehicles. They must be interesting, balanced characters. This is strictly mandatory.

- To start with, nobody gets more than one character. Second characters will be open to you once you've gotten into the game and gotten settled. I will have two characters, but that's because they are a "Package Deal" in how they are designed and I will be forgoing my option for a second character later on. :-)

- I would prefer no double up on powers. Currently, the powers possessed by our approved characters are:

Photographic Cognitive and Reflexive Memory with enhanced thinking capacity and speed.
Suggestive Persuasion via proximity and touch.
Animal Communication
Peak Human Physical Performance (Limited)
Clairvoyance (Future Sight)

Please try not to take one of these powers. You will be asked to change your power if you do so.

- Please commit to being active in the community. We want you to be an active voice in the creative process, so we don't just want a new character, we want an eager and excited participant.

If you're still reading, well...you must be interested! So I shall get onto how to apply now.

1) Concept. You will post here what your concept is. Questions will be asked by me, and requests made to edit certain details until the character fits the setting properly. Students and staff members alike are "Fair Game."

2) The successful characters will be moved to the Second Stage. In this stage, every other character and player will be able to have a freeform discussion on how their characters link together. You will then fill out a "Yearbook," which details how your character knows the others...since all characters must have been at the school for at least a year-ish, everybody would have at least heard of each other.

3) Approval. I will post your bio in the Approved Character thread, and you will be given access to the OOC Chatterbox, where most off topic chat happens. You will also be allowed to post your characters intro post.

This thread is simply an Interest Check; the game has reached Big Game Status, so all of the character discussions shall happen in the relative privacy of the board. This thread is simply to recruit new players, help you come up with a decent concept, and get you introduced to the process. Once you have a concept approved, I will give you a link to the New Player Welcome Thread, where your application will begin in earnest. So for now, all I need from you is the following:

Sex: Male / Female / Other?
Position: Student or Teacher?
Archetype: Nerd? Cheerleader? Athlete? Bully? Etc etc?
Power Theme: Give me a quick summary of the general theme of your powers. In depth description isn't necessary at this stage.

Once the above has been approved, then we can start building a proper bio.

Please, only submit Archetype Concepts in this thread; the full bios will come later. :-)

Men in general judge more by the sense of sight than by that of touch, because everyone can see but few can test by feeling. Everyone sees what you seem to be, few know what you really are; and those few do not dare take a stand against the general opinion. Therefore it is unnecessary to have all the qualities I have enumerated, but it is very necessary to appear to have them. And I shall dare to say this also, that to have them and always observe them is injurious, and that to appear to have them is useful; to appear merciful, faithful, humane, religious, upright, and be so, but with a mind so framed that should you require not to be so, you may be able and know how to change to the opposite.

This looks interesting, and I just had a high school game die on me so I'm up for something with some life to it.

Name: Nora Mason

Sex: Female

Position: Student

Archetype: Popular girl/Good Girl
Student Government/Softball team Captain/Straight A student, someone who believes it's important to both do good things and embody good values. Naturally charismatic, kind and warmhearted, people have a hard time not liking her. She may have a secret, even from herself, dark side.

Power Theme: Angel based - I'm not sure exactly what yet, I can imagine anything from being able to sprout wings, a halo and a glowing sword to healing/laying on hands. All up for debate.
I did have the notion of making her an Angel/Devil girl, perhaps something triggers her 'good' or her 'bad' side and her powers reflect where she is on her moral compass.
I.e. If she comes upon a victim of rape or a crime, her angel side comes out and she heals/defends them. If, instead, she witnesses the attack, perhaps her Devil side comes out to give the baddies a taste of what real evil is?

Looking forward to hearing back.

Vergil Tanner

Interesting! We don't have that many "Jocks," so having another one could add some interesting balance to the Archetypes!

Now, I don't have an issue with Angellic or Demonic-based powers, buuuuut since the powerscale of this game is pretty low - think more "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones" level, rather than Magneto and Apocalypse - if you had both, you'd have to dilute them pretty heavily. So really, I would suggest specialisation, with specific abilities. So if you want healing, then awesome! Buuuuut you only get Healing. OR you have Healing and an offensive ability, but both of them are very neutered.
I know this sounds pretty weak, but it's all to maintain balance. Can't have somebody in the team who is just heads and shoulders more objectively powerful than everybody else, no? :P

Just popping in to say Howdy Folks!

Vergil has asked me to provide assistance with the game. I play Sasha the incredible Shrinking Cheerleader.

I'm not the GM but I work closely with him and I'll provide assistance and answer questions if our lovely GM is isn't online. I'll also help with NPCs and minor plot points. I'm here to make the boss look good. 😊

So welcome to the game I look forward to helping and seeing what out new players come up with.

I can focus her on being a jock first and foremost, then. I noticed you have someone with peak human condition(limited), would that bar me from 'claiming' super speed? It seems athlete appropriate, and as think more on Nora the jock, her being faster then normal is very appealing to me. I see her as a 'fast ball special' pitcher able to really run the bases or know for a gift of getting to the right spot at the right time to make an incredible catch... before her powers. So the Event just accentuates and augments who she is. She's become super fast, but not at Flash levels, I'm ok with whatever upper limit you decide on, maybe she can outrace a motorcycle at top speed.

Vergil Tanner

Super Speed would be perfectly acceptable! We'd have to hammer out specific details - and I would be a lot more nitpicky with Speed, since Speedsters tend to Power Creep into the most OP Motherfuckers in the game if you aren't careful! - but as a concept, Super Speed is definitely not Barred! Peak Physical Ability more suggests "At the apex of humanity" and Super Speed is more like "No, no human is EVER going to outrun you." XD

Although, I might have to review that list, just to make sure that it's up to date. >.>

Sure, why not.  I'll throw my hat in.  I've been reading a lot of superhero literature recently and have been positively surprised at this recent cape culture resurgence in literary and other works.  Stories have really run the gamut too from Worm's gritty and hopeless to lighthearted school superhero stories where hero/villain fights are more like pro wrestling than anything else.

Name: Vincent Luca

Sex: Male

Position: Student

Archetype: The Slacker - Vincent really doesn't like to apply himself.  He slides by on the minimum for attendance, athletics and academia equally.  Not exactly stupid or unfriendly if other people approach him, but doesn't put in any extra effort to befriend people.

Power Theme:  Contact Telekinesis.  Can apply a telekinetic field to anything he can touch, and then move that around without physical effort, truly a slacker power.  The power/limits/growth of this is entirely up to the GM and the game, and can function with great latitude from simply being able to pick up stuff without using physical strength and stiffening his clothes to going up to budget superman levels.  In this game it's somewhere in the lower end, at least to start out with.
O/O

In Sword, Truth.

jeflint

Ooooh tactile telekinesis! :-)

Super boy from the 90s used that so he could mimic super strength.

Hmmm, ok. So, a few things with the Archetype:

Malcolm Wheeler High is a pretty posh school, so I'm not sure how long he'd last "just putting in the bare minimum." They have pretty high standards...but that can be handwaved. More important is that line about "doesn't put effort into befriending people." Since this is an intensely character driven game, and since there are a lot of social groups already in place, well...I don't know if you'll enjoy playing a character who doesn't make an effort, since he might find it hard to get involved, y'know? I'm concerned because I don't want you joining and then feeling stuck because you have no way of interacting with people that's in character.

As for the power....Telekinesis, like Speedsters, can grow to absurd levels, so we would have to put very specific caps on what he can do, and there would have to be a downside or drawback to his ability. Don't get something for nothing, after all! :P

BUT. One thing I will be strict on; he won't be able to use it to "mimic" other abilities, or at least, not to the extent that he's as good at it as other people who have that ability as their primary power. Otherwise, that just risks him singlehandedly making the rest of the cast obsolete. :P

Erm...  we may have a different understanding of slacker :P

Let's say that Vincent is more the type that doesn't strive to excel.  Slacker in this context means more like does exactly the work assigned, but nothing extra.  Same with the other stuff.  He'll maintain perfectly average grades most of the time, but doesn't even try to do better.

As for character interactions, he's not antisocial or unfriendly.  He just won't make the first overtures of friendship, most of the time.  Once someone else grabs him though, he'll be perfectly happy to go along for the ride.  In fact, going along with the ride is basically how he's lived most of his life.  Since this starts after already a year of school, some group or other would have grabbed him since even if he isn't exceptional in any subject, he does decently average in a wide variety of things.

For the power... Well, yeah, unlimited telekinesis is hilariously broken.  That's why I went specifically with Contact Telekinesis.  Can't do anything at range, can't even affect anything after he's no longer touching it, and probably can't do very fine manipulation.  As in, can't affect things on a smaller scale than he can basically grab with his fingers.  What he can do, is mimic the appearance of super strength and toughness to varying levels, and can lift things without worrying about stuff like center of gravity.  Probably can't use it to fly, given the power levels.  Beyond those, I can't really see how it would even be possible to mimic other powers with contact telekinesis, with it's inherently limited nature compared to unboud TK.
O/O

In Sword, Truth.

jeflint

Tactical Telekinesis basically allows super strong characters to lift things without the airplane breaking around them because a tiny portion is trying to move a big mass.

Superman has this. It's how he can lift an ocean like we without it ripping apart because he's exerting strength at a very specific point and gravity is applying to everything else. This power allows the item to stay in one piece. 😊

I understand where Fox is coming from, boss. 😊

Yep, I totally understand the Power Creep thing with Superspeed. It starts with Physics (real world) since F=MxA the ore speed she has access to the more force she can exert.

I agree with your take on Superspeed, I'm more thinking 'fastest girl around' not 'able to run at Mach X'. I am interested in her being able to pitch faster then any human has and potentially hit a ball with more power then her muscles have a right to, but again, I'm open to all limits and side effects.

For example, and to make her a little hated by other girls, I can see Nora having to eat a ridiculous amount everyday to keep her body fueled as her metabolism is amped up like the rest of her. Starvation could be an option for her to suffer if she doesn't eat X amount every day (rather than over a week like most humans) and hydration is key for her as well. An esoteric weakness (like Kryptonite but different) is ok with me too... ooo maybe something like Claustrophobia but in regards to being tied up/locked in a cage/box/room... essentially she can't stand not having the option of running...

Ok, I'm babbling, but I'm just really excited by the possibilities of playing Nora.

OH! Hi Jeflint, and yay for cheerleaders. Think Nora might be someone the littles cheerleader might know?

jeflint

Sasha has been at the school from day one she's the "OG" character and a social butterfly. She'd certainly know Nora. 😊

To toss my hat into the ring...

Name: Michael Clement
Sex: Male
Position: Student
Archetype: Athlete (Quarterback/Pitcher)
Power Theme: (Starting/Theme) He will have the ability to put something he throws/kicks/moves exactly where he wants it.  Wide receiver down field running free?  He can hit him, right in the hands, in stride, no problem.  Want to back the batter off the plate?  He can place the pitch just millimeters off of his face and the batter'll swear the leather of the baseball kissed his nose.

Its actually a form of telekenesis although with one key limitation - he has to believe he can physically move the object.  A baseball/football/etc, that's no problem.  A dresser?  He might be able to move it off the ground, but it'd be just as taxing as if he were physically lifting it.  A boulder?  Nope, can't do it.

I also want it to develop as he starts to learn his ability and what he thinks is possible.  Being able to have a thrown object turn 90 degrees is not going to be within the realm of possibility at first - that defies what he thinks is possible.  But a hard curve/slider breaking more than it ever could?  Maybe...

Unerring accuracy is a cool power. That's Hawkeye, Bullseye and Deadshot's powers and if used right it's a scary power.

I can see a slight issue that your form of the power might raise. Two characters with Telekinesis could potentially step on each other's toes. Granted one is picking up objects that he can touch yours is more the traditional Telekinesis.

It's ultimately Vergil's call but in the past we've been careful to avoid stepping on each other's powers. Sasha went through like 6 powers before her powers were mailed down.

Now that said your face claim is a Cutey. 😊 But I'm jaded I love that rugged look almost as much as suave. We need more guys and jocks so I doubt that's going to be a problem.

Do you have a particular personality type you're working with for Me. Clement?

I think the main difference is mine is really his "physical strength" translated into moving things with his mind.  Vincent it seems is required to touch it first but then it is unlimited.  It'll probably end up being a contrast of finesse v. brute force.  And given their two backgrounds (jock v slacker) it'd be ironic in a way that the jock isn't the brute force ...

I'm still working on it.  Personalities are always tough because characters take on a life of their one.  And before I do too much, I really need to reread all the other characters to get an idea of where he might fit in best.

Very valid points. Our other telekinetic did say he didn't have fine control of his power or range. So that is a difference.

I don't know the specifics on how the players will grow, powerwise, so it's possible that this would be fine because there are differences like you've mentioned. Vergi as GM has final say but if it's clearly to things you can throw it should be ok.

What's the limit to his throwing strength? Can he girl shot puts or bowling balls or has he stuck specifically to foot balls, frisbees, soft balls, tennis balls and the like?

Fox what limit of strength are you thinking of applying your Telekinesis? Like Volkswagen beetle to start or smaller? I know tanks and the like is probably going to be out of league. Spidey when he started, and he's pretty much the pinnacle of street level heroes, was a tonish until he got the symbiote suit to allow him to lift a bus.

Its limited by his physical strength.  If he can lift it normally, he can move it at a distance.  I think the development is going to be more fine control than adding more strength to it.

I'm still working on that.  At first I want the powers to be restrict to his perception of how things should be.  He knows how far he can throw a baseball and how it should move.  He can push those boundaries but until he really understands what is possible (and want this in-game) it won't extend to line-of-sight, hard 90-degree changes, that sort of thing.

For someone like him, not really specialized either way, yes.  You can throw a baseball further and harder than a football.  But for major athletes in the pro leagues, its hit or miss, especially when you account for accuracy.

Fair point.

Now as an attack power, you mentioned that it can get within stiches if the players face. Does it pack extra oomph?

I've seen doves explode from being hit by a baseball so I imagine it hurts a lot to begin with. Just seeing if his Telekinesis would scale up damage.

Oh cool nudists.

What are the specifics of her gravity manipulation? We talking like gravataona from Buzz Lightyear or Graviton from Marvel? What's the limit to her powers? Can she make herself and others fly? Can she make herself so dense she's physically untouchable? Does she suck matter into her? 😊

Keep in mind the idea on powers should be that we're starting out so weaker is better.

Interesting that we got 3 players all interested in manipulative powers with objects.

I played high school baseball.  I know what a 70-75 mph pitch hitting your back feels like.  It freaking hurts and can break ribs.  But I don't see the telekinesis adding any extra umph, to be honest.  A baseball or rock would already do a lot of damage if he hit someone in the face.  There's a reason pro players were battle helmets.

The reason the bird/dove "explodes" is all that force has so little places to go when it was hit by the pitch plus the downy feathers are easy to come out (I also hunt..).  I assume you mean something like this?
