This is a Buffy RPG game using the Buffy RPG Revised Core Rulebook, Monster Smackdown, Slayer's Handbook, and The Magic Box.  It is set in 1885, in the United States' 'Wild West.'  The setting will not be fully accurate (I reserve the right to take liberties due to my own ignorance, or just to make a better story).  It will, just by virtue of the setting, be somewhat politically incorrect.  It will be rated Nonconsensual-Exotic, and I do intend and expect Smut to be relatively common.

The game will start in a town know as Line's End, though the long term intent is to have it move around the region.  I mention this mostly as it could impact character creation, especially Occult Library.

I prefer, but won't require, that characters are female.  Non-humans may be allowed, but are not preferred and will be approved or rejected on a case by case basis.  Vampires as (good) PCs will not be allowed, if you want to play an evil Vampire in opposition to the group I might consider it.  I may run the Slayer as an NPC or just not have her present.  I won't write her off as a PC if someone is interested, but I will be extremely picky about the character and her player.

The intended posting rate is once or twice a week.

If interested, please post a brief (a paragraph or two) concept.

Setting
Line’s End had, for years, been nothing but a nameless collection of buildings in a remote corner of New Mexico.  It was notable only for the Missio Dominae Nostrae Aeternae Luvenis, an old Spanish Mission that had somehow managed to eke out an existence nearby for decades if not centuries.  The, false, rumour of gold brought an influx of settlers in the late 1860s.  Although no gold was ever discovered, though rumours of a lost Spanish treasure persisted, rich veins of silver and coal were enough to catch the interest of the Millerson Mining Company.  The company invested heavily to develop mining in the area, even going so far as to pay to bring a railroad line to the outskirts of the town.

Line’s End, in 1885, is not exactly thriving but is definitely surviving.  It has a population in the hundreds, though the vast majority are the male employees of the Millerson Mining Company.  Although most of the town’s buildings are crude at best, it does hold the Lucky Miner, the Lucky Lady, the Mission Hotel, Poe’s General Store, and the Flying Eagle Theatre.  Law is maintained by Sheriff Fitzwarin, while the town is lead by Mayor Beaumont, who is also the local head of the Millerson Mining Company.

Teaser

‘Ol Stub crouched in the shallow creek, the water lapping at his boots as he swirled a fistful of gravel around his pan.  His clothes were tattered, his pan dented, and his face that of a man who had spent too much of his life outdoors.  He was the last of the old timers, men who had come to the area with the first rumour of a gold rush, only to find starvation and disappointment.

As the gravel scraped across the pan, as the water and dirt gradually swished out, ‘Ol Stub felt his breath catch in his throat.  For the first time in decades, he saw the glint of gold.  Weathered and calloused fingers brushed through water, sand, and rocks in search of the errant nugget.  The sound of a branch cracking behind him ended his search as his head lifted.  His hand drifted towards the revolver at his belt as he twisted his head.

There was a new gang of bandits in the area but, like so many times before, ‘Ol Stub instead saw the flash of eyes reflecting the full moon.  An animal.  It was a welcome relief, still, he stood with pan in one hand and drew his revolver with the other.

“G't!”  He shouted, firing off a shot into the air.  The eyes vanished, and with a self-satisfied smirk, ‘Ol Stub returned his attention to the pan.  The crash of something large in the undergrowth lifted his head back up a moment later, his eyes widening as a massive bulk charged towards him.  He had only a moment to wonder what kind of beast he was facing as he swung his pistol around and fired off a single shot.  He may as well have been spitting into a hurricane, the beast didn’t even slow.

A single swipe of powerful claws nearly ripped his head from his shoulders, and he fell with a splash into the shallow creek.  Lifeless eyes settled on the pan he had been holding moments before, a small gold cross glinting in the sand and gravel.

Original Post
I was wondering if there was any interest in a Buffy RPG (using the system) set in the late 19th century?

I am thinking set in or around 1885, probably with the characters wandering around the west instead of located in a single city.  I would be allowing people to be either heroes or white hats (though only one slayer, and I'm not sure how to decide on a slayer).  My preference would be female characters, though I wouldn't require it.  I would probably not allow Vampires as player characters (unless as villains not associated with the main group, but I would have to think about how that would fit/work).

It would probably be rated NC-Exotic, with a high amount of smut.

The posting rate I would be aiming for (at least for myself) would be once or twice a week.

Is there enough interest that I should develop this further?

Would something like a robot made from clockworks and other such steampunky nonsense be alright? (with a human veneer laid over and all)

Been so long since I playtested these games, would love the chance to play them again :)

It would depend on what you came up with.  I won't refuse the idea outright, but would want to see a concept before I said yes or no.

What about the Snake Folk from the Slayer's Handbook?

I lean no on the Snake Demons, I wasn't planning on using that plot and am not sure they'd be a good fit.

  As much as the race polotics of this erra is a severe turn off for me, would a native american girl be good?  She might possibly have some spiritual power that amounts to actual magic, but that's not nessicary.

  I guess my first impulse, though, is that she's here as a result of a vision, or hunting the  murderer of a loved one, rather than walking in white man's teritory for more mundane reasons.

  I'm not quite sure where you're setting this geographicaly, or how it matches up wtih the wars and the reservations, but maybe she's Blackfoot?

Native American is fine though might have some issues.  A vision or hunt would work.

I was trying to keep the exact location vague (due to limited knowledge of New Mexico), but probably somewhere near the current Gila National Forest area.  I can't find good maps of Native American territory, but it looks like Pueblo, Mogollon, Apache, and maybe Cheyenne were potentially in the area.  Blackfoot would be farther north I believe than where we are starting.

Deathnote

I'm considering playing a Totem Warrior from China who came to America five years ago in order to find work.

Muse

  Ah.  :)  New mexico.  A little way from the black hills, then.

  Thanks to reading Fool's Crow I like to think I could do a Blackfoot without being ridiculoulsy inaccurate.  ^_^;;

  I'm pretty sure Appache nad publo had their teritory here for a long time, where as some others (tigua in el paso, for example, IIRC) were forcefully relocated, which lead to some conflict with the earlier inhabitents.   Anyways.

  I'll crack my books and take a look around.

  Jaded, are there any books you're not using?  For example, can we use Magic Box?  Or merits from the Angel book?  Perhaps--for those who are working wtih actualy supernatural beings--the ones that make that more interestgin?

Also, I think a group game would be better served by not have the Slayer be a PC. I think there's more advantages in having her be controlled by the GM.

Alternatively you could have a Hero-centric game, with each of us being a clockwork Robot, the Slayer, a Totem Warrior, a (Half) Demon, a Werewolf, etc ;)

I feel like the slayer could be a PC, I feel like the GM would have a lot to do if s/he controlled the main hero, main villain, and the surrounding atmosphere. This is totally biased though, because I really want to write the slayer. :)

Yeah.  I am going back and forth on the Slayer.  If the player dropped it would be a pain for various reasons, but I'm not a big fan of running a major protagonist.

Alias

Now that you mention it. :)

I'll pm it to you, just in case it makes me look stupid in one way or another. I'm a gigantic buffy freak, and I feel like I could do some serious justice to the role of the slayer.

LSWSjr

Quote from: Jaded on November 22, 2015, 11:07:56 PMWhy were they unreleased?
Because when the print copy of Welcome to Sunnydale was finished, there was a huge argument over whether to do a PDF only release or risk doing another print run which would cost Eden Studios a lot of money; remember this was ten years ago before PDFs were as popular a distribution model even though they'd found success with DriveThruRPG; but also this was exacerbated because WtS wasn't guaranteed to be a big seller because a fair bit of its content, BtVS Season 6 & 7 content specifically, had also made it into the Revised Corebook released before it.

The Investigators Casebook for Angel was the next to be released after that, but they actually wanted to do a print run of that book and had to resolve the WtS issue first.  Sadly the issue was not resolved before the license with Fox came up for renewal and ultimately the BtVS and ANGEL RPGs weren't proving financially successful enough to warrant the cost... so the remaining supplements have remained shelved.

As a Eden Studios playtester I have back-ups of all the unreleased supplements, thought granted only the second most recent copy of Encyclopaedia Demonica, and honestly screw the NDA I signed all those years ago, if George wants to sue me over lost revenue he's welcome to try.  I'd rather see that every fan of the RPGs got to see all the hard work that was put into these unreleased supplements!!!

So, I have two ideas running around in my head:

  Nalin's name meand maiden.  Before Nalin started to develop, the joke was they called her that so they could tell she wasn't a boy.  She boys' games and girls' with equal skill.  Her uncle Nantan trained her at the same time as her older brother, Elan.  By seventeen Nalin was equaly skilled as hunter and cook, warrior and craftswoman.

  It was then that an unatural creature tore Nalin apart in the night.  While the rest of the band packed up and moved on in search of a safer camp, Nalin tracked the creature to a white man's town, where she didn't know if it was hiding amongst them or preyinng on them too...

*  *  *

Back east, there's a scuessful dime novelist named Nathan Chase.  Most people don't know that Nathan has been cowriting with his daughter Mindi since she was fifteen.  For the last two years, Nathan CHase has been all but a pen name for Mindi.  With the west shrinking, Mindi has gone west--as her father did for a few years at the start of his career--in preperation for starting a career of her own.

Just to expand on that previous post, all the characters are Heroes and they include:
-an honourable Miquot demon who enjoys the heat of the scrublands and often trades with civilised folk by hiding his head plates under a hat and blaming jaundice on his skin;
-a lawman (Cop) who understands that some crimes have a supernatural explanation (could also be restated to serve as our Slayer's Watcher);
-a werewolf with strong ties to the local mystics after they helped her to control her transformation;
-a native Totem Warrior who seeks to preserve his people's culture in this 'modern' world; and
-a young prostitute plagued with terrible visions and telekinetic abilities.

If we had access to the ANGEL Corebook, there was also one of my old characters from the playtests: The Magenta Monk of the Silken Eyes

Actually, all it would take would be for you to approve the following Quality from the ANGEL Corebook :D

Nanjin Adept
  8-Point Quality
Wesley: She obviously doesn't see the same way we do.  But she can see.
Cordelia: How?  Bat vision?
Wesley: In a sense.  The human eye is only capable of registering a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.  But if Brewer were somehow equipped to see OUTSIDE that range . . .
Cordelia: She'd be Superman.
  -1.21 Blind Date

The Nanjin is a secret order of cave-dwelling monks from Pajaur, wherever that is.  They have developed a mystic method of "seeing with the heart" allowing their adepts to see without needing eyes.  A Nanjin trained assassin plucks out his own eyes and relies exclusively on this mystical sense.  But self-mutilation is not necessary.
A Nanjin Adept can sense his surroundings, making it impossible to blindside him.  Your character is immune to all effects of darkness or invisibility and gains a +2 to all Perception rolls (this is cumulative with any Acute Senses bonus).  The Fast Reaction Time Quality is an added bonus (with no extra charge).  Finally, the Nanjin's supernatural abilities grant him +2 to close combat attacks and defenses.  These benefits are only applicable against living or moving foes.
When combined with the Physical Disability (Blindness) Drawback, a Nanjin-trained character can "see" a monochromatic world around him with enough concentration (reading and close visual work is not possible).  In a fast-paced combat situation, a nearby assailant who has no body temperature and does not breathe or move is invisible to a blind Nanjin.

My thought (mechanically) are:
-Adversary levels stack, so it would be Adversary 4 (Wendigo and Brother's Killer);
-Teenager isn't really an applicable Drawback in this setting IMHO, as you often had 13 year old mothers and there weren't as many (enforced) laws about teens drinking, smoking, etc; and
-Wild Card: Riding usually replaces Driving in pre-car times.
Otherwise she's a stunning looking gal :)

Character Background:
Xin was initially trained in China to become a watcher ever since he could walk.  He was selected to undergo special training to become a soldier against the forces of darkness.  His training was above and beyond that of a normal watcher.  When he was a teenager, however, his mentor was killed by a vampire.  Ignoring the Watcher's council, he tracked down the vampire all the way to America, essentially becoming an ex-Watcher in the process.  There, he spent several years travelling the country, further honing his skills.  It wasn't long before he found a town that was plagued by the Wendigos.  Perhaps sensing Xin's desire to fight against the forces of darkness, the Wolf gave him the strength needed to rid the town of the Wendigos.  Shortly after that, he was approached by the watcher's council, who offered to reinstate him as a Watcher.  In exchange, he would be assigned to the current Slayer.

Muse

  Deathnote, I'm pretty sure that if Slayer doesn't stack with Iniative Commando and Jock, then Totem Warrior doesn't either.  ^_^;;

LSWSjr

Actually, the reason Slayer doesn't stack with Jock, Athlete, Initiative Commando and Slayer-in-Training is because the Slayer's boosts to her physical attributes are caused in part by training... that said, considering you can be a Jock+Initiative Commando or a Vampire+Slayer-In-Training+Watcher... let's just say that I find that restriction with the Slayer to be particularly idiotic, still it's RAW :(

Deathnote

If it's a problem, I can replace Totem Warrior with Occult Investigator, Sorcery 1, and one more level of Occultism.  I'd then move 2 points of Dexterity and put them in Constitution instead.

  *Shrugs*  I'm not GM, but that certainly sounds more interestnig and thematic--not to mention less munchkin and broken--to me.  ^_^;;

Alias

I fee like the Slayer should have the highest strength rating, just cause, mystical demon powers that protect the world from all other demons. I know its all thematic, but it just feels right to me. I'm becomingsort of extremely excited to try a system game.

P.S. It's possible to stack Slayer with Slayer-in-Training (combo is 18 pts total).  The only things that don't stack are the two skills they share and the Obligation Drawback.  It's kinda dumb that Slayer's can't take the Jock Quality, though.  I mean... what about Buffy's training as a cheerleader?  Doesn't that count as athleticism?  >_>

Jaded

I am going to be fairly picky on the package deals.  They are, at least in my mind, the defining aspect of a character and it feels weird to have multiple (especially similar).  One is fine, two if you can argue it well, any more than that and it will probably be rejected.

What was Watcher Agent from?

Everyone please post a character in the below thread if interested (I may requests changes however, depending).

Deathnote

I figured the Initiative Commando could apply to anyone who had received specialized military training at some point in their life-time.  Since the Initiative didn't exist back in 1885, I re-skinned the package so that Xin would've received the specialized training as a Watcher instead.

Unless... maybe the Initiative Commando could be re-skinned into a member of the Secret Police... >_>

I initially considered taking the Secret (Government Agent) drawback instead of the Obligation drawback to reflect that if it got out that he used to be a member of the Chinese secret police, he would be accused of being a spy for the Chinese Government and end up with a large bounty on his head.

Jaded

I will be limiting the package qualities to one, maybe two if it fits the character well, as suggested by page 39 of the core book.  So would need you to modify your sheet(s) to fit that.

Hmm.  I'd have to look more into the history of China in the 19th century if you want to go that route.

Age: 20

Character Background:
Xin was initially trained in China to become a watcher ever since he could walk.  When he was thirteen, he was sent to Europe to continue his studies in the Occult and general Watcher training.  Approximately three years later, however, his mentor was killed by a vampire.  Ignoring the Watcher's council, he tracked down the vampire all the way to America, essentially becoming an ex-Watcher in the process.  He cut his queue, let his hair grow out, and cut off all ties with his past life.  He spent the next several years travelling the country, further honing his skills.  All he had to help him on his journey was the journal left behind by his mentor.  Eventually, he was approached by the watcher's council, who offered to reinstate him as a Watcher.  In exchange, he would be assigned to the current Slayer.

Hmm, interesting character but Watcher and Occult Investigator kind of feel like they overlap, I'll have to look into them a bit more tomorrow when I'm not so tired.

We are just starting after a delay due to the holidays, and are still recruiting if anyone else is interested.

Ah?  What sort of ideas? :-)

I had this old Buffy character that was an attempt by the Initiative to create their 'very own Slayer'. (Figured it would be something Walsh would have cooked up). Not a big leap to go from 'engineered superhuman' to 'Frankenstein's Monster'.

Ironically named Valerie Hobson.

Jaded

That could be interesting. :-)   Using Robot or some other quality?

I think it was built in the Angel rule set.

Jaded

Unfortunately I am only allowing the Buffy books.  Could you rework the concept to just use those?

Callie Del Noire

Basically just yank out the Slayer's detect vampires ability an some level of amnesia and that should be it.. (I found all but the core right now.. digging thru my pack out.)

Jaded

Write up a paragraph or so background, and can probably join before things get too far in.  :-)

Callie Del Noire

Alrighty,

The man that Valerie Hobson knew as 'Father' had been a student of Manfred Wallace, who had secured the notes and journals of Victor Frankenstein. In addition to the fallen creator of reanimated life, which he applied to his own experimental procedures. Manfred had an interest in reconstructive actions that put him literally decades ahead of any other medical doctor, such as the rudimentary basics of reconstructive surgery and transplant surgery. He had been experimenting for over a decade when he found Victor's journals in a small bookshop in Dublin, a forgotten part of an estate sale. Victor's copious notes on over coming rejection and mating flesh from multiple sources.
He immediately started experimenting on cadavers, going slow as he honed his understanding of what Frankenstein had done. Slowly he looked for better and better 'donors' to see about making the perfect human as he dove into the darker sciences and then alchemy. Then SHE was brought into his source's morgue. Her brain was dashed in and her trachea was crushed but other than that SHE was a perfect start to his experiment. He made her 'average' looking due to the massive rebuilding of her face and throat, figuring he could work on her appearance over time. The scars where he put in an intact brain (from a murdered girl) and rebuilt the crushed skull were hidden under her hairline and once lightning restored her to living breathing life he introduced her as his 'niece' come to live with him after a terrible train accident had killed her parents and left her without a shred of her old life. That was when things started getting .. odd. Her strength, agility and healing factor were unprecedented and she took to the martial skills of fencing like one born to it.

Very rough, wasn't sure how you'd like it to fit..and how much 'slayerness' she retained.
