!Welcome to Tachibana High!


Summary of Setting and Atmosphere:
The role-play will focus around a school on the small, independent, archipelago of Hanahoshi; far from any mainland and near the centre of the North Pacific Ocean. The school, Tachibana High, is located just outside the capital city Toyama, on the dense jungle island of Toyama. Here the students will be free to indulge in all manner of activities in a world where the level of technology and culture closely mimics our own, with only a few slight changes. For one, roads which cut through the dense forests and mountains are rare outside cities as long-distance transport is dominated by both an underground/water transit system and air shuttles -- this is only true for Hanahoshi, not the rest of the world. Also, the governing body of Hanahoshi differs from that of the real world as it relies on a system of clans which run similarly to businesses. Besides those few changes, this is your typical anime-induced bundle of drama, scheming, romance, comedy and (hopefully) heaps of energy!

Focus of the Role-play - Goals, Crushes, Misadventures and Secrets:
While Tachibana High will have a main plot, sub-plots and plenty of events, it will ultimately revolve around the aspirations of the characters and the ensuing chaos and craziness it will take to achieve their goals. As the students pursue their dreams, they will likely be forced to face both common and uncommon hurdles, all while running the risk of losing friends or exposing those secrets they prefer to keep close. They also may be unfortunate enough to create rivalries and outright enemies along the way as their paths inevitably intersect and clash with others. The main goal is to have fun!

RULES AND GUIDELINES

On Storytelling:
While I’ll attempt to manage the main plot along with a few events and sub-plots, this doesn’t mean other players can’t create their own sub-plots and adventures. I’d actually welcome it since finding fun stuff to do for a school based role-play is a lot harder than I thought. Just give me a nudge please, before you do, so that I can be assured that it won’t somehow disrupt the atmosphere and setting.

On Posting Pace:
Take as long as you want but try to let everyone know if you’re having trouble. It’s normal for real life to get in the way or for the muse to struggle so don’t fret about timely posts.

On Handling Combat and Competition:
If you want to experiment with your own system or use an established one then feel free to try, otherwise you can simply ask a neutral party to decide or discuss who wins amongst yourselves. There will also be a very simple dice system that people can choose to use if none of the above appeals to them.

On the Fourth Wall and Defying Physics:
Only one rule on the fourth wall, don’t break it. As for silliness such as pulling mallets out of nowhere, Chibis and other similar anime devices, I’ll only warn everyone to use such gimmicks sparingly as overuse can cause them to lose their charm. Also, try to remain aware of the type of scene before using them as a chibi might not be welcome in a serious atmosphere.

On NPCs:
NPCs are there to create hooks for the RP (especially if I feel its losing momentum) as well as fill in generally unwanted roles. As the game progresses however I want to carefully ease most them out in favour of players occupying their positions, like the Student Councils or Team Captains. I feel this would create a more dynamic atmosphere.

On Violence and Sex:
While I wholeheartedly endorse fights or teasing between students, I’m not writing this role-play with gore or sex in mind. This doesn’t mean I’ll stop anyone from including such in their own sub-plots or adventures as long as they keep these elements separate from the main story and threads. If you begin a sexual scene with someone then create a new thread and link to it in the main thread; that way people can choose whether they want to read it or not. Also, I should mention that any sex with NPCs will fade-to-black, at least if I’m controlling them.

On Sci-Fi, Fantasy and the Bizarre:
This is a strict rule - no Sci-Fi or Fantasy elements are allowed into the main story or threads! There will be branching plots which will include plenty of SHORT fantasy and Sci-Fi adventures but I’ve tried to write both in such a way that they don’t seep into the main story or areas. If anyone is keen on dragging a few characters on an adventure with sci-fi or fantasy let me know so I can make sure it won’t affect the main story.

On Fetishes:
I don’t mind if players attempt to include more bizarre material, all I ask is that they don’t drag their fetishes into the main story. Much like the sci-fi and fantasy aspects of this role-play, “What happens in crazy-world, stays in crazy-world.”

CHARACTER TEMPLATE EXPLANATION

Fundamentals: ”How Do You Do!”
Name: Your character’s Name!
Age: Your character’s Age! The only classes available are for sixteen and eighteen age groups but your character could have stayed back or skipped a few grades. Nothing below sixteen. Characters in the younger class will focus more on the silly, free-spirit, side of anime while the older students will be pulled into the grittier, darker and more action-packed side.
Origin: Home country of your character!
Language(s): “Common” is the primary language of Hanahoshi, it’s basically English with a few injections of Japanese for people who enjoy saying stuff like “Kawaii” and such. Just so it doesn’t feel out of place. The second most spoken language is “Japanese”. Finally, while only known to a few, the last most useful language for the role-play is “Elvish” although it’s considered to be incredibly nerdy and superfluous.
Gender: Don’t be afraid to pick something outside the norm, just try stay within the range of “Human”!

Appearance: ”You’re Beautiful!” and a little ”Too Sexy!”
Distinguishing Marks: Any birthmarks, scars, or tattoos, your character might have.
Height: Short and cute or tall and sexy? (Average Female: 5’2 – Average Male: 5’5)
Weight: Huggable Teddy or Delicate Flower? Before you look at the averages, I want to mention that weight and height/size don’t have to be proportionate in anime. It’s actually more amusing if you choose to mix it up a little (I.E. small body, heavy weight). (Average Female: 52kg = 115lbs – Average Male: 60kg = 130lbs)

School Rep’: ”High-School NEVER Ends!”
Reputation: Nobody can escape it! In school the tiniest action can define a student for the entire school body, for YEARS to come, haunting them right up until graduation. Many students might not be able to recall months of study before an exam but, when it comes to the embarrassing moments of others, their minds are like steel traps. Describe what your character might be known for, good or bad, and how they’re generally treated.
Social Group: Do pom-poms make your character want to scream “Go Team”, or make them lament the status quo endorsed by society? Is that a homemade peace bracelet, or are those rings of blood tattooed around your character’s wrists? Is that the school rule book tucked neatly under your character’s arm, or a rusty crowbar? Pick the type of people your character relates with and can usually be found hanging around.

Defining Talents: ”Just like a Wavin’ Flag!”
Academics: Describe your character’s approach, or lack of, to school work as well as their progress. Try to be thorough and mention if they have any favourite classes. The most commonly used classes for the role-play will be Computers, History (Fake) and Languages (Mention which languages).
Physical: Besides describing your character’s physical condition, you can also pick one or more activities they may be proficient in. The main sports in the school are Swimming, Tennis, Athletics (High/Long Jump, Running and Throwing) and Football (Soccer) but you can pick another sport if you like (it just won’t feature as much). You can also pick Martial Arts which will open another plot path.

Relationships: ”Teenagers Scare the Livin’ Shit Outta Me!”
(Unless you already have someone in mind, you can leave this section empty until a few more profiles are up)
Crushes: Who is that special someone, that person who leaves your character’s heart aflutter and tongue tied? You must have a crush! You can pick anyone but I’d prefer if you chose a player over a NPC. You can’t pick someone who is crushing over your character; that’d be too easy. You aren’t limited to one choice and can change this through role-play. You can include a short reason, or flashback, to show what sparked the love.
Best Friend: If you see a character that might fit here, let the player know and brainstorm a little. Otherwise, try finding someone during the actual game to fill the role. A best friend can help your character on their exploits for love, mischief and adventure.
Rival: Same principal as “Best Friend” except evil-er!

That’s Life: "No Need to Run and Hide, it’s a Wonderful, Wonderful Life!"

Place of Residence: Describe the place, or places, available for your character to stay. Also, mention if your character’s residing in the school dorm and if you have any particular roomie in mind for them, otherwise they’ll get a random one.
Family: Give a brief description of your character’s family, quirks and all.
Dreams: Describe the heights and goals your character longs to achieve. They must have a dream!
Dark Secret: The type of secret which follows your character wherever they go. One they can never forget and are afraid to share.
Permanent Record: Does your character have any black/white marks on their record? Such information will remain between them and the school staff.

Reputation: Jacques and Benjamin are the newly appointed principal and vice principal. The two were brought in from London after their predecessors, Kerry Anderson and Hikari Raiton, were suddenly fired. The reasons behind the dismissals remain a mystery to the student body as do the aims and personalities of the new principals.

Gin, on the other hand, is known for his calm and polite nature, with just the faintest signs of humour dotting his normally composed demeanour. The only time the two seem to break character is when they ultimately bump into each other after which they degrade into a pair of clumsy, tongue-tied, lovebirds.

Reputation: He's everything his parents groomed him to be, intelligent, athletic, and socially adept, with a strong enough presence to leave an entire hall swooning, even amongst some of the seniors. Despite all this however the teen seems to carry a great weight over his heart but only to the keenest observers.

Reputation: She's the celebrity of the school, or at least she dreams to be. Akari’s an energetic personality who remains ever vigilant of opportunities to jump into the spotlight, especially if it offers the chance to sing to a crowd. She also has a tendency to drag others on her adventures to attain stardom. There’s almost no end to the amount of students who claim to have been part of a hastily slapped together band with her.

Reputation: Eric Walters is a foreign exchange student from England who can normally be found constantly chewing on a white cigarette-shaped sweet. He's exceptionally laid back and seems to care little for class, sports or anyone around him. It has become a bit of a hobby of his classmates to try rattling him from his ultra-cool demeanour through constant scares and practical jokes.

Hard-Hitting Reporter
Name: Fumiko Takahashi
Age: 16

Reputation: Fumiko is a snoop and gossip, one who has gained a reputation for being untrustworthy. Nobody is silly enough to divulge their secrets to her. This doesn’t stop a hard-hitting reporter like Fumiko however. As scary as it is, if the truth is out there then she’ll likely find it.

Reputation: Kin is a geek for computers and Kou is a geek for role-play. Each shares interest in the other’s hobby but they excel in their own. These two sisters are inseparable.

Reputation: Nothing thrills her more than the hunt for mischievous runts except, maybe, for the part where she doles out punishment. The merciless disciplinarian has volunteered more than once to supervise detention after school.

The two are backed up by Kimi, an old friend, who acts as the unofficial team cheerleader.

Hanahoshi Information

HANAHOSHI, A BRIEF HISTORY:

The four islands of Hanahoshi are controlled by the Core, or “Council of Regional Elders”, a system of competing clans run similarly to companies, with each offering a specific benefit to the whole. The major clans are the Tachibana (Scholars), Koga (Military), Iga (Industry), and the leading clan Tokugawa (Politicians and Businessmen). Under these clans, several minor clans also operate. The Core is a group dedicated to the protection of the Hanahoshi Islands, the advancement of technology and the supervision of a free and open society. It’s controlled by the directors of the leading clans with the Tokugawa at the head; a seemingly stable system. However, despite the outward appearance of cooperation, it is no mystery to the population of the constant acts of espionage and sabotage which occur in the background as each clan vies for more prosperity, influence, and respect. On the Isles of Hanahoshi, a clan (or family) must go to great lengths for the smallest amount of honour, a delicate prize which can be instantly stripped from them at the slightest hint of shame.

The Core, once known as CAAI (Pronounced Kai; Citizens Against Artificial Intelligence), was a movement which began on mainland Japan in the year 2015 by a group critical of the transference of powers from a human government to an Artificial Intelligence, one which would come to be called Gaia. While they started small, CAAI soon attracted the attention of some of the larger families of Japan and, after several brushes with the law, decided to use their newfound wealth and influence to exile themselves in favour of creating a new and free society. Thus the islands of Hanahoshi were settled and developed in the year 2020. Since then CAAI has become “The Core”, a move that has left citizens sceptical. Many of the people of Hanahoshi feel that “The Core” has been twisted into nothing more than a means of maintaining control for a privileged elite.

CITIES OF HANAHOSHI

Rural Areas:
Rural Towns and Hamlets of all shapes and sizes are scattered throughout the Isles, each with their own customs and cultures. Some retain a connection to a nearby city but most are content to live detached from the clans and the rest of Hanahoshi. Urban citizens have a habit of looking down on their rural kin, seeing them as uneducated barbarians. This myth is constantly propagated through searing exposés on rural life, where journalists pick out the worst rural villagers to create a report on. The media hardly cares for a balanced review in light of how well shock and horror sells.

RECENT EVENTS ON HANAHOSHI

Local News:
Headline: Tachibana High, Down but not out!
Date: Monday, January 7, 2075
Tachibana High is still reeling after suffering a sudden wave of dismissals, beginning with those of Principal Kerry Anderson and Vice Principal Hikari Raiton. Many are still confused over the decision as both were considered to be highly regarded amongst student and staff alike. A few of the remaining staff, commenting under the condition of anonymity, have stated that they feel the executive was the main target while the others were simply unfortunate casualties, caught in the crossfire for their bravery to speak out. A spokesperson for the Tachibana clan has denied such claims however stating that the dismissals were part of plan to revamp the High School in preparation for the coming year. He says the board had been deliberating for months before they came to their final decision and hadn’t simply acted on a whim as implied by alarmists. The Spokesperson assures those concerned over the recent events that the new staff members were handpicked from the best and would ensure a stable learning environment for the students. Attempts to reach the new Principal Jacques LaCroix and Vice Principal Benjamin Fairfax met with little success.

Headline: UN Delegates Due Tomorrow
Date: Monday, January 7, 2075
Both the Core and UN have confirmed the arrival of several delegates tomorrow to the city Bijuu, where discussions on the increasing tension between Hanahoshi and Japan will begin in earnest. Queries on whether the Tokugawa were concerned over possible mentions of Hanahoshi’s weapon development were scoffed at, with one board member going so far as to say, “They can discuss it until they’re blue in the face, we’re not going to handicap our military for the sake of a foreigner’s peace of mind.” In related news, the Koga have promised to send their own troops to beef up security alongside the Tachibana for the meeting, a move that many speculate was forced upon the Clan of Scholars by the Tokugawa. A spokesperson for the Tachibana insists that there is no shame in allowing the Koga to participate but many political analysts note that there’s obviously a lack of faith in the Tachibana’s security forces. It will no doubt take the clan some time to recover from the blow to their honour.

First off, glad to see a little interest over such a short time!  :-)

Before you read any of the below, let me explain the basic idea behind most of it.

I haven't finished the NPCs, the below is mostly rushed and there are a bunch missing. I wanted to establish cliques and write-up secrets for them all (you can't see that) but I'm still slightly concerned about interest.

The "Standard Uniforms" will be what 90% of the students wear.

The "News" in this instance is just to help familiarize players with the world. Also, I hope to use it later on to ease new players into the game, should the role-play go so far as to make reading the actual RP threads a chore. They'll be like summaries of what has happened. "Local News" will be rare since events outside the school of Hanahoshi won't affect the school itself and so they're just a bother to write-up; they're mostly for atmosphere.

Otherwise, I just wanted to ask for opinions on what board the RP might fit best.

Reputation: Eric Walters is a foreign exchange student from England who can normally be found constantly chewing on a white cigarette-shaped sweet. It has become a bit of a hobby of his classmates to try rattling him from his ultra-cool demeanour through constant scares and practical jokes.

Reputation: Fumiko is a snoop and gossip, one who has gained a reputation for being untrustworthy. Nobody is silly enough to divulge their secrets to her. This doesn’t stop a hard-hitting reporter like Fumiko however. As scary as it is, if the truth is out there then she’ll likely find it.

In the interim, she’s also trying to restore respect for the school of martial arts. What she lacks in stature, she makes up for in heart and tons of energy!

Reputation: Rika’s the type who is constantly fishing for compliments and attention, a goal that many agree she takes too far, but while the term “slut” has been loosely tossed about the proof of her sexual exploits remains flimsy at best. For some, a raunchy appearance seems to be evidence enough.

Self-Proclaimed Man-Whore

Reputation: Juro has “done” almost every female in school, teachers included. Yup, he’s a total man-whore and you know it’s true because he says so. Ignore the fact that basically everyone will deny it; all you need is Juro’s word.

Reputation: Kin is a geek for computers and Kou is a geek for role-play. Each shares interest in the other’s hobby but they excel in their own. These two sisters are inseparable.

Reputation: Don’t be deceived by his lean appearance, Seiji is as tough as they come. Unfortunately, he uses this toughness to bully almost every urban-born student in school. He seems to have a soft spot for rural pupils but those are far and few between.

Reputation: Nothing thrills her more than the hunt for mischievous runts except, maybe, for the part where she doles out punishment. The merciless disciplinarian has volunteered more than once to supervise detention after school.

Reputation: She’s a complete sports nut. There’s not much else to say. If you try to strike up a chat, all you’ll end up discovering is that you somehow signed up for the Athletics Team.

Reputation: She’s the captain of all the football (soccer) teams and while eager to lure in new students there’s little of interest about her.

Reputation: He’s the captain of all the tennis teams. Many believe him to be a little obsessed with the game but otherwise there’s nothing remarkable about him.

Swim Team Captains

Height: 5’5” and 5’4”and 5’6”
Weight: 70kg – 155lbs and 50kg – 110lbs and 75kg – 165lbs
Reputation: Izumi is the newly appointed team captain since her sister, Fuji, hurt her leg. Fuji was once the fastest swimmer in school but has little to offer the team now other than a little assistance on the side. The two are backed up by Kimi, an old friend, who acts as the unofficial team cheerleader.

HANAHOSHI, A BRIEF HISTORY:

The four islands of Hanahoshi are controlled by the Core, or “Council of Regional Elders”, a system of competing clans run similarly to companies, with each offering a specific benefit to the whole. The major clans are the Tachibana (Scholars), Koga (Military), Iga (Industry), and the leading clan Tokugawa (Politicians and Businessmen). Under these clans, several minor clans also operate. The Core is a group dedicated to the protection of the Hanahoshi Islands, the advancement of technology and the supervision of a free and open society. It’s controlled by the directors of the leading clans with the Tokugawa at the head; a seemingly stable system. However, despite the outward appearance of cooperation, it is no mystery to the population of the constant acts of espionage and sabotage which occur in the background as each clan vies for more prosperity, influence, and respect. On the Isles of Hanahoshi, a clan (or family) must go to great lengths for the smallest amount of honour, a delicate prize which can be instantly stripped from them at the slightest hint of shame.

The Core, once known as CAAI (Pronounced Kai; Citizens Against Artificial Intelligence), was a movement which began on mainland Japan in the year 2015 by a group critical of the transference of powers from a human government to an Artificial Intelligence, one which would come to be called Gaia. While they started small, CAAI soon attracted the attention of some of the larger families of Japan and, after several brushes with the law, decided to use their newfound wealth and influence to exile themselves in favour of creating a new and free society. Thus the islands of Hanahoshi were settled and developed in the year 2020. Since then CAAI has become “The Core”, a move that has left citizens sceptical. Many of the people of Hanahoshi feel that “The Core” has been twisted into nothing more than a means of maintaining control for a privileged elite.

Rural Areas:
Rural Towns and Hamlets of all shapes and sizes are scattered throughout the Isles, each with their own customs and cultures. Some retain a connection to a nearby city but most are content to live detached from the clans and the rest of Hanahoshi. Urban citizens have a habit of looking down on their rural kin, seeing them as uneducated barbarians. This myth is constantly propagated through searing exposés on rural life, where journalists pick out the worst rural villagers to create a report on. The media hardly cares for a balanced review in light of how well shock and horror sells.

RECENT EVENTS ON HANAHOSHI

Headline: Tachibana High, Down but not out!
Date: Monday, January 7, 2075
Tachibana High is still reeling after suffering a sudden wave of dismissals, beginning with those of Principal Kerry Anderson and Vice Principal Hikari Raiton. Many are still confused over the decision as both were considered to be highly regarded amongst student and staff alike. A few of the remaining staff, commenting under the condition of anonymity, have stated that they feel the executive was the main target while the others were simply unfortunate casualties, caught in the crossfire for their bravery to speak out. A spokesperson for the Tachibana clan has denied such claims however stating that the dismissals were part of plan to revamp the High School in preparation for the coming year. He says the board had been deliberating for months before they came to their final decision and hadn’t simply acted on a whim as implied by alarmists. The Spokesperson assures those concerned over the recent events that the new staff members were handpicked from the best and would ensure a stable learning environment for the students. Attempts to reach the new Principal Jacques LaCroix and Vice Principal Benjamin Fairfax met with little success.

Headline: UN Delegates Due Tomorrow
Date: Monday, January 7, 2075
Both the Core and UN have confirmed the arrival of several delegates tomorrow to the city Bijuu, where discussions on the increasing tension between Hanahoshi and Japan will begin in earnest. Queries on whether the Tokugawa were concerned over possible mentions of Hanahoshi’s weapon development were scoffed at, with one board member going so far as to say, “They can discuss it until they’re blue in the face, we’re not going to handicap our military for the sake of a foreigner’s peace of mind.” In related news, the Koga have promised to send their own troops to beef up security alongside the Tachibana for the meeting, a move that many speculate was forced upon the Clan of Scholars by the Tokugawa. A spokesperson for the Tachibana insists that there is no shame in allowing the Koga to participate but many political analysts note that there’s obviously a lack of faith in the Tachibana’s security forces. It will no doubt take the clan some time to recover from the blow to their honour.

I recognize a few of them too but the only one from an anime I've seen is Kagura from Azumanga Daioh. I actually tried to avoid big name animes though.

Thanks! You have no idea how much was deleted and left out. The cities, for example, initially had descriptions. And the bits and pieces I posted up for the NPCs had to face the chopping block before I could post them. Too many spoilers in their notes.  :P

Quite a lot of NPCs?

They all fit into a bunch of pre-created plots I've made but I'm hoping to usher them out as the RP progresses, especially the council and team captains. Those two have absolutely NOTHING tied to them, except one rough idea and it could work with any one of them. And I'm not even sure it's a good idea.

It's not a big deal really, it just kinda gives me a kick. Like one of them is actually a guy that turns into a girl occasionally. The one that really gives me a kick is the Aspirant idol because she is certainly an idol of sorts in the series she's in, but because she is known for her rather harsh and unforgiving nature when she fights others, which often ends with the other side quite well injured. Some of them you got pretty close to what they do, which probably means that their appearance defines who they are which is a bit weird :P

Aspirant Idol was actually "Rocker" before. The change came because I thought I could squash all the plots related to music and celebrities into one little ball. The coincidence might also be because while searching for characters I wrote the type of character I was looking for, like "geeky" or "bully." Just a hunch.  :P

Well if you really want to know, then Teen Heart Throb is from bleach he's a captain of shinigami, Aspirant Idol is from Sekirei where her and her Sekirei (Which is kinda like a lover that fights for you) are known for being unforgiving and unapologetic in fighting, but it's mostly in the Manga from what I remember, Hard Hitting Reporter is from Kampfer, actually a guy that turns into a girl because of an ability he was given to fight, Junior Council is actually the Student Council from Medaka box they basically try to solve problems in school from a suggestion box they made, Super Serious Sensei looks exactly like this martial arts girl from Tiger and Bunny, but I'm not entirely sure it's her, it might be a character form another series cosplaying, so it should be ok, other than that they look familiar but I am not sure who they are.
