"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to the 75th World Martial Arts Tournament! We've gathered here once again to witness the most powerful, most agile, and most talented fighters on Earth go at it in no holds barred combat! It's exciting! It's electrifying! It's dangerous to everyone and everything within a five mile radius! And if that isn't enough, the winner is awarded the title of World Martial Arts Champion and given a hefty sum of ten million zenni! And let me tell you, folks, if King Hercule was still alive today he would most certainly approve of the list of fighters we've got on the roster for you! Hang on to your seats, you're in for a wild ride!"

Setting: The world of Dragon Ball Z, but far in an alternate future. Instead of the Saiyans being Freeza's soldiers, they managed to develop space travel and scour the stars. Eventually, they arrive at Earth and find a strange sort of kinship with the humans, a race almost equally as violent. The saiyans and Humans manage a peaceful co-existance on both Vegeta and Earth; the humans share technology and the saiyans share their fighting techniques and teach humans how to manipulate ki. After a great many generations, we arrive at the 75th World Martial Arts Tournament, which has become more popular than ever.

Structure of the tourney should be familiar to anyone who's seen DBZ; one-on-one rounds, ten count knock outs and a ring out counts as an instant loss. Hand-to-hand combat and ki techniques are allowed, no holds barred. The new arena is held high in the air and all the action is filmed by Capsule Corp (tm) hovering CamBots, with the crowd watching below, where they are (relatively) safe from explosions and raining debris. Winner gets crowned champion and is awarded a huge cash prize. Since this takes place in both an alternate universe and the future, you're welcome to play just about whatever you want; human, saiyan, half-saiyan, android, or namekian.

Battle System: Nothing set in stone just yet, but I want to go for something simple. I hope what I've come up with thus far is to everyone's liking;

Power: Roll 1d6 and add 6 to the result to determine Power
Toughness: Roll 1d6 and add 12 to the result to determine Toughness
Ki: Roll 1d6 and add 6 to the result to determine Ki

Attacking: Roll 2d6. If the score is less than or equal to your Power, you meet with success. Deal your Skill score worth of damage to your opponent's Toughness.

Ki Attack: Roll 1d10 and deal that amount of damage to the opponent. The attack will never fail. After using Ki Attack, lower your Ki stat by 1.

Ki Dodge: Roll 2d6 and if the result is equal to or less than your Ki score, you dodge an attack completely. If successful, lower your Ki stat by 1.

I would wonder is there chance for raise any stats long run or are you stuck with what you got? Anyways interested, I post my rolls now and make full sheet later.

Power: 9, Endurance: 9, Ki: 8, Speed: 8

Oh my, got myself a rather excellent fighter there (wish Power could had been 10). Considering if someone has Power 10 and they roll nat 10 to their d10 dices on attack they do 30 damage - foe's endurance (which can be 10 and so foe gets 20 damage). So we need some HP sums for folks which either must be random (like 10+10d10) or that all contestants have flat 100 HP so they can take quite few hits in (minus NPC contestants which can have more or less HP or race giving bonus).

MissFire

Indeed, it needs some tweaking. What I posted was just what I came up with. What we go with should be as simple, or simpler. We could always do a 'point distribution' system, where you have so many points to distribute across all your stats. That could make characters more customizable as well.

Yeah, as someone can get nat 1 on all those four stats and so be 'Krillin' case of the tournament :P. So point distribution with limit that only one stat can be 10 would be good. 30 should be good number as it allows single stat on 10 and then two stats above 5 some amounts and last stat at 5 (or less if want max out two other stats to 9 but we could rule no stat is below 5 to avoid that cheese).

Although with your system anyone who has speed above 5 will always opt to for 'dodge' with their speed stat vs Ki attacks (it's chance to fail but better than just eating Ki attack from someone who has power 10).

A simple system has simple answers for your opponents, but if you want story be more about a detailed well written attacks between combatants but want some decision making who wins, easiest answer to it is by rolling d10 dice, whoever gets highest number wins the match. Where as ties it means match is forfeited some reason (and thus both combatants loose).

Point distribution is definitely preferable -- and you could even introduce a tiering system, where up to ten (starting limit) costs one point and anything above ten costs two points, above twenty four and so on as the game goes on.

If I may make a recommendation for Ki: why not make it work for Ki attacks as both power and toughness, rather than number of uses? That way, it doesn't interact with Power OR Toughness, thus doesn't help against (or with) a punch -- as a balancing factor (since it seems like a more powerful choice to focus on it), it could always goes second in a fight since it needs charging up.

Also, perhaps HP could be a set number with a bonus derived from high toughness?

I think high Ki and Toughness determines your overall HP (as Ki is life force itself). So guy with Endurance 10 and Ki 10 would have monstrous HP (and monstrous toughness against mundane and Ki attacks).

Anyways I agree that tier system would help introduce raising points above the 10 (and gain points when gain number of wins). Also Ki keyed to make Ki attacks and resist Ki attacks make sense.

MissFire

No tier system and no 'x stat plus x stat equals x stat'. It complicates things too much.

Alright, then I propose to just use the four statistics as comparative aids to a more freeform battle system which basically tell who is faster, who is stronger, etc. as a guide for the course of the fight. You make an opposed roll to decide the winner in advance and add the number totals -- this allows to accommodate for more powerful NPCs or if you want to differentiate between player characters and their advancement as things go on.

Edit: You could even use the added up numbers (and an appropriate multiplier) to count Power Level, if you want to include scouter measurements.

Adding them up to make a sort of 'power level' could be workable. Just pop some zeroes onto the total and done! If that's the case, then we'll have to go back to rolling for stats, though. Thinking about it, however, reveals that the winner would just inevitably be the person who rolled luckiest upon creation and that kind of ruins things. I could just use the same combat method they use in the 'Fighting Fantasy' Steve Jackson books. Hmm.. so then..

Thoughts?

It looks quick and easy.  I'd be willing to give it a whirl.

MissFire

Name: Mei Wen Hu
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Race: Half-Saiyan

Power: 9
Toughness: 14
Ki: 10

Bio: A tomboy from the day she was born, Mei has had an enormous interest in martial combat since she first saw one of the classic Jackie Chun movies. Nearly as soon as she was able, she joined the New Crane School and took to her training with ease. While not the strongest nor the fastest, she has learned how to harness a large amount of ki and has become an expert at manipulating it. Her specialty is the Phantom Fang (more commonly called Afterimage Technique). As one might guess, she takes martial arts and her school very seriously and has entered the tournament to prove herself and prove that crane style is the ultimate martial art. When Mei isn't fighting or training (which is a rarity), she is surprisingly rather relaxed and casual. During training she can be brusque and serious, but when not busy she's a guy's girl; she loves to relax and have a few drinks.

Techniques:
-Phantom Fang: Mei creates multiple afterimages of herself and uses them to distract her opponent so she can slip in from a blind spot and strike. Usually she combines this with Panther Style Kung Fu, resulting in precise and fast blows that are mainly elbows, kicks, or panther-fist punches.

-Dodon Barrage: A variation on the Dodon Blast taught by the New Crane School, the Dodon Barrage is many smaller, rapid-fire blasts that emerge is golden beams from the tip of the user's pointer finger. Mei does this with her thumb facing upwards and pointer finger extended (as if mimicking a gun) to help her aim. After numerous blasts, one, final, large blast is fired.

-Mystical Crane Typhoon: One of the signature moves of the New Crane School, this devastating ability sacrifices concentrated power for area-of-affect damage. Mei, airborne, charges a sphere of golden ki and then hurls it at the ground. As it hits the ground it explodes and 'splashes' out in a wave that extends far from the point of impact. With such a large damage area, she does not even need to hit her opponent directly.

-Spirit Cannon: Another signature Crane move, the Spirit Cannon (often called the Tri-Beam Attack) harnesses so much ki that it is even damaging to the user. Mei only uses this when things are desperate. The user creates a small 'frame' by making a diamond shape with their hands and visualizing their target within that frame. From between the hands comes an intense golden blast of ki, powerful enough to knock back all but the heartiest of opponents. Even against an opponent of much greater power, a Spirit Cannon barrage can hold the stronger fighter at bay.

No, it's just for flavor. Otherwise everyone would have to have everything balanced out, or more mechanics would have to be added and I'm not doing either of those things.

Zaer Darkwail

Name: Known only by alias Crimson Night
Age: Unknown, but suspected to be past 20
Gender: Male
Race: Human

Power: 8
Toughness: 16
Ki: 12

Bio: A underworld fighter known as Crimson Night has remained as less profiled fighter for long time in martial arts world. He has always fought while masked on bandages, no one knows his real entity (so far as audience knows). Nor is known where he trained and learned his techniques. He is known very incredibly tough opponent and he has shown remarkable Ki techniques, but besides that he may not be strongest fighter in the punch but he has lots experience being underdog.

His motives also why he fights or participates in tournament is unknown, but most assume it's because to get fame and money than anything else really. But it's known he has interest only to strong fighters, even to point he has many times dueled with them on death in underworld illegal death matches (and so far survived).

Techniques:

-Crimson Shadow Fist: In this technique which is common finish move for Crimson Night is that he conceals his entire arm with dark malevolent Ki energy which radiates in inky black/crimson in color. He has several times ripped hearts from foes with this technique so the technique has well earned gruesome reputation, but what is known it could be employed less lethal manner. It's Ki empowered single target hand to hand technique.

-Gaze of the Scarlet Moon: Only warning sign when this technique is used is that Crimson Night's eyes briefly blaze on scarlet energy before everything around him is concealed in Ki blast which covers very wide radius and hits everything inside with it fierce power. It is literally simply Ki explosion where Crimson Night himself is center of the explosion.

-Phantom of Midnight: Crimson Night is capable to become immaterial entity briefly to avoid attacks, it's shown when he glows red and becomes translucent just before attack hits....and passes harmlessly through him before he materializes back again when he is once more vulnerable.

-Bloody Claws of the Beast: In this technique Crimson Night forms crimson/black claws on his fingers and he makes clawing motions in air and launch a barrage of slashing crimson energy on foe. The claws rarely do any serious injury but if foe gets scratched they suffer in painful burning from even small scratch which will siphon their endurance and bring them pain until Crimson Night dismiss his technique on them.

What types of androids are available for play?  There are a lot of choices.  The oldschool DB ones, the movie ones (like 13), 16 style full synthetic, 17/18 cyborg types, and the obvious biosynthetic Cell types (which aren't quite as bad if you exclude the hax from namekian/saiyan/frieza genetics mixed in).

Coming soon...

MissFire

Zaer your image is... broken? Or linked from somewhere? You need a new one either way.

And Tonberry, any type of android is fine.
